As a consumer and small time artist myself, living in a world that is hell bent on pushing the narrative to produce epic quick and unrealistic cinematic videos and producing fast products in order to thrive, be "seen" or stay relevant...this video is refreshing and encouraging! And I think more artists need to revolt against the mainstream social media agenda or whatever it is that's pushing for this stuff and like you said focus on doing the work itself. Maybe produce epic pieces from time to time, but take the pressure off the self a little and remember why we're creating. By nature artists are perfectionist's....I can't imagine how much time and energy it would take to not only create and grow in your craftsmanship as an artist= that alone is a full time job but then run a business and produce epic cinematic films continuously .. .let alone single handedly is asking for burn out.. just my little opinion.
Hi, new subscriber. I'm so relieved to finally hear this out loud. I saw this quote a few months ago, "You can't force creatives into a box. If you try, they'll no longer be creative. And no one will want your box." - Ryan Lilly. I feel like sometimes the whole niche thing is like caging an animal. LOL, I don't know, but I used to build and flip furniture for an indoor vintage antique and unique gifts mall, and the requests for same piece or paint finishes really burnt me out. I even sold my watercolor landscapes that I used for staging with my furniture, and they became a grind, too. LOL, I have a lot of stamina for creating, but not for the same thing. I finally broke out of it and built pieces that were completely different, and they sold! You are right, if the work is good people will buy it. Please forgive the long comment, but the vlog resonates with me. Thanks for sharing.
Krista! Thanks for subscribing and I really appreciate your comment 🙏 I’m glad the message resonated with you because it also makes me feel not alone in this hahah. Stay creative and hope to see you around in future videos ☺️
I really love this format! Very refreshing. I love your cinematic work. But I love this as well since it gives you the ability to just talk and go in depth on certain topics, without having to worry about engaging the viewer with all the different frames and angles and such. It gives more focus to what you're saying.
I agree that worrying about a niche is not super important. Learning what you want to learn about is more important, I think! I have an aesthetic but not a niche. It allows me to work with many different styles and mediums without having to fit in a little box…but there is still something that ties it all together. My art mentor works in every creative style under the sun and encouraged me to learn about and try history’s great artists and movements, and that made me a much better artist than focusing so hard on a niche.
Thank you for this video. We need more of this kind of encouragement. There’s too many people telling you not to do things, but I think being an artist you need to do what makes you happy and stop putting restrictions on ourselves. I’ve been painting for 10 years and still not found my niche and to be honest I’ve stopped looking!😊
YES ! I totally feel you on this! This is such an interesting and important topic. It's crazy how universal this struggle is for artists - balancing what we love with all the other responsibilities life throws our way. I actually just uploaded my first episode yesterday about this exact issue! I was trying to find some inspiration from my artist friends who seem to have found a bit of balance. Thanks so much for sharing this - it's comforting to know we're not alone in this! And I love how genuinely you express yourself on screen - it's really authentic 9:03
Such a nice comment to read 🥹 Glad we’re not alone in this and so comforting to hear other artists feel the same way. Thanks so much for watching, I really appreciate it 🫶
New subscriber here, hi! Watched some of your other videos and love your approach to your art and life it’s refreshing and optimistic. You also have a great sense of humour which I wonder how much that helps you on days when things aren’t going great or how you might not want them to. Looking forward to following your ongoing journey and celebrating it. Great advice about niche or style, I feel many put unnecessary pressure on themselves, myself included in trying to ‘find’ that, I think our style is ultimately there all along, it’s just who we are baked into whatever we create ❤
I like this 'less but better' philosophy both in your career approach and your video..from letting go abit of finding your 'own unique style' to 'jump cuts and editing'..this video was super chill and useful. Thanks Brooke!
Love this format!!! Drinking tea while I listen, and this is so peaceful. Also, I received the cactus painting, “ouch”, and it’s a nice addition to the office.
Brooke -- I’m so happy you’re intending to make more videos like this!!! I love when you get chatty, you’re full of insights and it always leaves me super inspired. I used to rely mostly on commissions for my income and I think it stopped me from being creative as well, plus it caused huge burnout. Now I teach art to kids (in the comfort of my own home!) which is not only more lucrative financially, but it’s also so fun making art alongside them. Gives me a chance to just be free & silly, and I often look at the work I created at the end of the lesson and am surprised by how much I like it. On that note - have you considered hosting art classes for kids?? They would absolutely adore you! 🩷
Selling your practice sounds like such a great topic! Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on it 😊 And I also agree that quality > nicheing down. Because ultimately algorithms reflect people’s interest more than anything. Making a consistent portfolio will help algorithms categorize you, but whether or not people stay depends on the quality of your content. Additionally plenty of painters are known for their distinctly different “eras” and collections and lots of collectors take pride in having a work from an artist’s “_____ Period”.
I loved this video! You showed up in my recommended and now I’m subscribed! I love everything you said about niching down. And I couldn’t agree more! I enjoy doing so many art forms, from knitting to pottery and I’m a newbie painter. I love doing each one! Sometimes one more than the other. I wouldn’t survive if I had to be in a niche box. 😅
Love this format tbh I love listening to you talk about the topic but also your cinematic videos are so nice, have you considered outsourcing some of the editing to ease the work, it’s actually an amazing business investment and someone who’s really good at editing can do it for you in a fraction of the time, it’s common advice I’ve heard a lot from RUclipsrs who have been in the industry for a while
Thank you! Happy you like it ☺️ And I knowwwww it’s been something I’ve been thinking about for a while, but I feel like the art is in the editing and I have a hard time giving that up haha. Maybe one day though! Just have to find someone with a similar vision
Love the pace of this content! Even though highly edited videos are more flashy and entertaining- my ADHD-ish brain really processes and remembers this style of content better. Awesome stuff and thanks for the advice!
I totally agree, it's a relief to hear from you. I haven't established a theme or a medium that defines me for a couple of decades and as you say: that work is no longer with me, a lot of it has been sold. Maybe the only thing I care about is that what I do is an easily commercial subject. I can't (or maybe I can find my market) keep drawing monsters hahaha like when I was a teenager. I liked this mini podcast. Greetings.
Even the Masters experimented with different styles. When someone asks me about my style niche I say “when someone asks me what my favorite color is and I tell them it’s Rainbow” it is the same way how I feel about niches.
You’re hilarious! I’m glad you are taking this format. Since I am also an artist and need to create video content, I’d much rather “flap my gums” lol😅😂
I was feeling like my interest in multiple art mediums and crafts are getting out of hand. My ADHD head was about to explode with all the art career options I could take on hypothetically. Your calm voice silenced all the voices in my head for 15 mins. THANK YOU!!
I just love your content, I think you have become my favorite youtuber ❤️ I would love to hear about how to start selling your art, where to sell, who to sell to, for how much, when you are just starting and truly have zero following. I am a full-time musician, but I have been growing as an artist on the side and I am interested in selling my work, but not sure how to get it seen, and how to get sales on it. Thank you so much for your content, your light heartedness makes my days better, and I look forward to these chatty videos as well as your cinematic masterpieces 🙏🏻
@b.cormier Ahh, I'm honestly fan girling a little bit to get a comment back from you. So silly 🙈 Thanks for responding, and you got a loyal subscriber from me 💪🏻
Thank you for this video Brooke 😊 I really like the podcast style and hearing your thoughts on art things. It’s great to see you succeeding without having to niche down because I struggle to do that so much!! Every time I’ve tried to stick to a niche, I end up getting fed up after about 2 weeks and then I end up starting something completely different 😂 Thanks again :)
You just mentioned that people comment when you post to your broadcast channel. I am on your broadcast channel, but I am not able to comment? I’m liking this new style of video. 🇨🇦
I had turned on replies just for the one post asking what I should talk about! But then I got overwhelmed afterwards with responses and had to turn them off again lol 😅 I can’t keep up with comments all the time and it causes a wee bit of anxiety haha, maybe something to discuss in a future video!
Thanks Brooke from over here on Vancouver Island BC. Just fussing about with that “ niche” thing myself. Don’t like it, it’s boring. 😊 Variety is way more fun.🎉 Love this format. Take care! ❤
I'm managing and editing videos for people with no time and a youtube channel and i just share this video as an example on how to make things look good and cozy in terms of setting up the “set”
I love this kinds of videos cos I've been drawing while listening. But I also love your cinematics, think you've got talent in this, try hiring an editor
Love you stuff. Please store your brushes horizontal! I have brushes since I was in 5th grade, you can really make them last. I know you see lots of brushes stored incorrectly but, I actually learned it in art school.
Don't be harsh... a nice corner or angle of view, good lighting, clear sound are the minimum for a good video that deals with a good subject ... as we can deal with this on a bench in a garden or at the seaside, just avoid the wind for the sound.
Good advice in terms of improving. I used to make clay figures, acrylic paintings, jewelry, and line and wash art, whatever I could throw on a table with a price tag. But I wasn't really selling much. Another artist, more successful than I, looked my work over and said that my line and wash was clearly where I had some obvious skill... and i should focus on that. I did and started actually selling my work. Yet even within that focus my art continues to evolve... and improve. as a matter of fact, picking a thing over all those creative things, helped me to improve. I have a question for you. As someone who works in inks and watercolor I often hear I need to switch to oil to improve/get the attention of galleries/ price my work higher. But... I love my water color, and ink, and line work... it makes me sad thinking of switching. Is it necessary?
Thanks Amanda! To answer your question, no I do not think it’s necessary at all to switch to oils. I think as long as you’re presenting your work professionally (nice frames, etc) and the work itself has caught attention from collectors (as it seems it has) I think it’s just a matter of finding the right gallery. I can’t speak too much on this subject as up until now I haven’t had a lot of experience with galleries, but I do know that there are so many different kinds looking for different types of work (not just oil paintings)! So I would say, don’t feel pressured to switch if this is what you love to do and you’re experiencing success with it. Hope that helps 🙏
Depends on who you're marketing to and your audience, for what kind of art will sell. I took several abstract oil paintings to an art expo once, sat there for nearly 3 days, and only sold 1 tiny painting, while an artist a couple booths from me, sold out ALL of his 40+ paintings, as his art was very realistic and easy to do and understand. The most successful artists today, however, are abstract artists who sell paintings for millions of dollars, to very high-end buyers. Personally, I think artists should explore with all mediums and styles and find the one that suits them, and still vary styles some as a great classical musician, may also like doing jazz, and a little rock, here and there.
I think the “you are the niche” is true for sure! And that is a big part of marketing your artwork on social media. Luckily, if you want to be an artist without showing your face, there are ways to do that too - just more of a gallery/art show route
Hey Brooke! Love this style of video! I have a question for you tho. What are your thoughts on having a niche to your business tho instead of your art. For example, your Instagram should have a specific nice look to it. I’ve been struggling making my business look like my art or just look like they belong lol. Idk if that made any sense.
That’s a good question! I think that you can still manage to make all your work and “branding” look cohesive while still experimenting with your art. You can do this by remaining consistent with the way you, for example, edit your photos or what fonts you use. I use Lightroom to edit all my photos and have created a preset filter that I can put over all the images that I post that will more or less help them all look good together! Hope that helps and thanks so much for watching! 🙏
I think art is like when you first go out drinking with friends, you try different beer and maybe vodka, next night you try whiskey and an ale and so on until you eventually settle down to a couple different beers or maybe spirits until you find the drink that you most enjoy and slow down with, enjoy this style of video, but still wanna watch you paint
Everything I do is intuitive…. Art… Poetry… Jewelry…. I just give it all away …. I love your work and love how you think & love your videos You will naturally develop your own niche after you’ve explored to your hearts content…. 💗💗💗
@@b.cormier your intuition is leading you to do what you’re doing now…exactly as it should be for you… I went in the opposite direction… letting loose first… no discipline…that’s why I admire you because you are very disciplined…and know techniques…. I know nothing & need to learn like you have….
It's very interesting that artists are only supposed to be "Specialists" who master one thing forever. Half of us are "Generalists" who were made to explore through our creations. I think as long as we're producing our work AND making it available, Generalist Artists can do well, too. 💕 You seem very good at the sales and marketing and setting up systems to take off the financial pressure. I look forward to your "Sell Your Practice" video if you choose to do it. :)
Brooke you’re so right! None of us need to niche down, we are artists and creatives. Wouldn’t we feel like we are missing out on experiences then? I also can’t stick to one style, although I have a style that is really well received, I still dabble with other styles and the buyers find them. Artists, don’t limit yourself! Your work will sell!
How u get inspiration for painting or vision ?? I am not able to paint anything with my own i can copy paintings but not able to paint with my imagination plz reply
I don't sell much art. It's not my primary income. I paint what I want and have no intention of changing that. I've seen some fulltime artists be scared to change as their customers only want one style/subject.
I find this video incredibly insightful on the “anti” perspective of finding your niche. SUPER grateful for it. I’ve been in a spot where I feel that I’ve been trying to “figure out who I am” as an artist a little more…. But…. I love so many different kinds of art. That being said I feel like starting off maybe with a direction would be better. What do you think?
Also…. I have so many things I wanna add to this thought and I just don’t even know where to start….. notion starting a business?! Where do I buy this?
I’m glad you liked the video Danika! I definitely know what you mean, having direction will ensure that the work you’re doing is productive. I would recommend writing out all the different ideas you have in mind and seeing which one sparks the most interest. If it’s, for example, painting nighttime streetscapes, consider doing a small series of those type of paintings to see how you feel about it! Then move onto the next thing. I’m going to do another video about this - thank you for the idea haha
For the life of me - I cannot paint the same style of subject - I would get bored and dead inside. I need artistic exploration the whole time with different subjects and styles to be alive and expired lol. I don't really care if I sell (but I do most of the time), art its like breathing for me, its necessity, if I try to limit myself I would not feel any different than at 9-5 office job where you expect to do certain thing over and over.
topic of niche down , for me it depends on working experience, passion , and becoming expertise in that subject. i’m a freelance illustrator focusing on tailoring/menswear. 10 years in evolving from drawing portrait to only drawing suits /clothing accessories 😅
Hi Brooke I found your video very informative, I'm a new subscriber to your channel. It's been a while since I've picked a paintbrush, pencil or pastels and did any serious artwork 🎨 and I now find a little nerve racking It's silly really I know what to do but can't seem to do it. What would you suggest cause I would really like to something with my art 🎨?
Thanks so much for being here! ☺️ I would suggest setting the bar really low for yourself just to get started. For example, make a goal to sit down and sketch for only 10 minutes a day, and sketch anything you want! I think you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll “shake the rust off”. I hope that helps and thanks for watching 🙏
I think niching down has been overly emphasized in recent years thanks to the ~almighty algorithm~. But is your audience as a collective qualified to be your art director? (Probably not!) It helps me to remember that many great artists have multiple periods during which they've experimented with different mediums or motifs - all the while, their unique voice still shines through. Detours inform the journey!
tim got a style and sell well. BUT tbf, his work is a bit repeatable and "the same". I prefer artists that experiment, fail and paint more from the heart :) :D
Hi Brooke, I love this new format as much as the other videos! I also like that it's not scripted - because you might feel like you ramble a bit, but actually you're sometimes giving some extra insights that are valuable to know and you wouldn't have thought that it's valuable! Also - another great way to diversify your income is putting out an online course for aspiring artists 😁😁🫶🏼
Thank you so much Sophie! 🫶 when I was editing this video I thought of that too - there were some things I probably would not have talked about if I had written it all out ahead of time haha. And yes I hope to make some courses this year too! 🤗

Hi Brooke, I also feel that improving one's skills is the thing.
Totally 🙌
Thanks Brooke from over here on Vancouver Island BC. Just fussing about with that “ niche” thing myself. Don’t like it, it’s boring. 😊 Variety is way more fun.🎉 Love this format. Take care! ❤
Haha amen! Thanks for watching Sandy 🫶
This is a cool setup and lovely nuggets on art with warm beverage and humor.❤😊
Thank you!🙏
Excellent advice! And you were not rambling!
Thank you so much! 🤗
Super, thank you!
Thanks for watching! 🤗
I'm managing and editing videos for people with no time and a youtube channel and i just share this video as an example on how to make things look good and cozy in terms of setting up the “set”
Count me 🙋🏼♀️ with Team Yapping! I enjoy this informal chit chat about arty stuff. Just chilling out.
Yayyyyy 🗣️
I love this kinds of videos cos I've been drawing while listening. But I also love your cinematics, think you've got talent in this, try hiring an editor
I totally agree. Please talk about selling art for non-popular artists!
Thanks for watching and for the video idea! 🙏
great video, agree!
Thank you! 🤗
Thank you. I love watching your short videos.Very informative 😊👏❤️
Thank you! I’m happy to hear it 🤗
@ is it possible in one your program talk about artists block, long list of inspiration still have fear of starting projects.. It's my big issue now.🙏
What about creating abstract constraction? Maybe something on mirrors?
Interesting idea!
Love you stuff. Please store your brushes horizontal! I have brushes since I was in 5th grade, you can really make them last. I know you see lots of brushes stored incorrectly but, I actually learned it in art school.
Thank you! 🙏 and good to know, though these brushes are just props haha (they’re all my rejects)
"Way less cinematic" says Brooke while sitting in the cutest little space with the cosiest lighting set up
Don't be harsh... a nice corner or angle of view, good lighting, clear sound are the minimum for a good video that deals with a good subject ... as we can deal with this on a bench in a garden or at the seaside, just avoid the wind for the sound.
Hahah I can’t help my attention to detail 🙈
Loved hearing that :)
Thanks Sabrina! 🫶
I agree 👏👏👏👏👏
New sub!!! I really enjoyed this video
Yay! Welcome 🤗
Love this 👌
So glad 🤗
Insightful! Thank you for sharing 🙏
I never tried to have my own style it was always there naturally because I’m intuitive and follow no rules
No apology needed. Just roll with it. Like the " do your best" someone will like it, thought.😊 Ann in Florida
Thank you Ann! 🥰
Your niche is marketing your face and personality. This is simply the only way to get traction with art on social media nowadays, though.
@@b.cormierthat helps soooo much! Thank you! And I absolutely love your videos so I will continue to watch them and support you in any way I can! 🫶
Haha good analogy for the drinkers out there 😜
I’ll be doing more painting videos in the future too! Thanks for watching :)
Everything I do is intuitive….
Art…
Poetry…
Jewelry….
I just give it all away ….
I love your work and love how you think & love your videos
You will naturally develop your own niche after you’ve explored to your hearts content….
💗💗💗
Intuition is everything! Thanks for watching 🥰
You seem very good at the sales and marketing and setting up systems to take off the financial pressure. I look forward to your "Sell Your Practice" video if you choose to do it. :)
Thank you Abby! And very well said 🙌
Brooke you’re so right! None of us need to niche down, we are artists and creatives. Wouldn’t we feel like we are missing out on experiences then? I also can’t stick to one style, although I have a style that is really well received, I still dabble with other styles and the buyers find them. Artists, don’t limit yourself! Your work will sell!
Yes yes yes! So happy to hear this 🙌
I want to see what you create when you can do what your heart desires!
YA ME TOO 👀
It made sense alot.. I'm so proud of you.. unscripted was much more fun😅 i loved the frame and i poved your clothes ❤
Thank you! 🥰
Definitely a struggle when you rely on your art sales! But if you have another income it takes the pressure off, which is awesome!
@b.cormier I am on a low income overall but definitely don't want the extra pressure
Also, you can learn about the Notion template here: www.brookecormier.com/pages/studio-notion-template ☺️
There ya have it ☝️ spoken like a true artist haha
We want classes from you at Skillshare❤❤❤❤
Haha good to know there is demand! 😜
Lets cam and paint some still life
topic of niche down , for me it depends on working experience, passion , and becoming expertise in that subject. i’m a freelance illustrator focusing on tailoring/menswear. 10 years in evolving from drawing portrait to only drawing suits /clothing accessories 😅
And I’m sure the next 10 years will bring more evolution!
Hi Brooke
I found your video very informative, I'm a new subscriber to your channel.
@b.cormier thank you Brooke. I'll follow your suggestion 🙂 Thanks again ☺️
Brooke is so cute
170th like! Whooo hahaa i know! No one cares MUAHAHAHAAAA. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING BROOKE LOL🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤❤ SUPPORTER FOREVAAAA
THANK U FOREVAAA
I think niching down has been overly emphasized in recent years thanks to the ~almighty algorithm~. But is your audience as a collective qualified to be your art director? (Probably not!)
It helps me to remember that many great artists have multiple periods during which they've experimented with different mediums or motifs - all the while, their unique voice still shines through. Detours inform the journey!
Very well said! 👏
tim got a style and sell well. BUT tbf, his work is a bit repeatable and "the same". I prefer artists that experiment, fail and paint more from the heart :) :D
Everyone has their preferences! Just a matter of finding what works best for you ☺️
No rules in art. Let's do our thing!
Amen!
@@b.cormieruhhh, that's exciting!!🤗
