    I don't think Kageyama and Hinata were able to meet with Grandpa Ukai earlier because he was still recovering in the hospital. He just got out recently and started coaching the little kids right away. That's why grandson Ukai made a comment on how the Grandpa should be still resting.

      Exactly. After coming out of retirement, he went to Karasuno to coach but soon collapsed and probably have been in the hospital for many months until this episode. I love how he's still very into sharing and training younger ones to volleyball. That level of passion in any career is admirable.

    One of the most interesting things in this episode is how Oikawa basically said the exact same thing as Coach Ukai which is that the hitter is in control of the attack, not the setter. I think Oikawa is the better setter compared to Kageyama at this point because he understands this and plays by this principle.

      I'm interested tho, as to why Oikawa thinks that Kageyama is better at setting than him, as he said in season 1. Does he mean, setting, like Kageyama's skill to pinpoint his sets more accurately than him? Someone help me🤧
      Like Oikawa is a better SETTER but Kageyama is better at SETTING/TOSSING?

    • @InstantSilence
      @InstantSilence 3 года назад +101

      @@StayFruityYall At the technical level, Kageyama is a far more skilled setter than he is; his tosses are very accurate, he's versatile, and he can toss from virtually anywhere. Oikawa acknowledged very early that Kageyama's ability to set the ball has a higher upper limit than his own, but Oikawa makes up for it in his game sense and his ability to provide the best sets to his teammates. However, those are things that can be learned with time and experience, so he knows that eventually Kageyama will catch up to and pass him in that regard as well. It's also why he doesn't particularly like helping Kageyama, as seen in this episode. He uses the excuse that he doesn't want to help an opponent, but in reality, he's trying to delay when Kageyama surpasses him.

    • @Clara-rz5zm
      @Clara-rz5zm 3 года назад +39

    Oikawa's the kind of character where people's reactions to him are either "love him" or "love to hate him" lol. In real life I think I'll be mildly annoyed at him, but in a fictional setting like this, little shits like him are very entertaining XDD. I find this quote somewhere, "outside the court, Oikawa is a prince. On the court, he is the King." And I think it sums him up very well. He plays around flamboyantly off-court, but is very serious, determined, and assertive on court. Oikawa is an excellent player that never neglects to practice hard individually AND find a healthy balance with his relationship with his teammates where he both allows his spikers to hit the tosses they like but also push them to their limits. About his flirting habits; Oikawa also never actually approach his fans either (it's always the girls that mob him first). He indulged them occasionally, but never to a point where it disturbs his job as team captain and setter. Like previously when he tries his fans' cookies before entering the gym, even without Iwaizumi to scold him I think he will enter on his own when the time comes for them to start warming up. He is plainly very admirable.

    This was the episode that made me start respecting Oikawa as even though he doesn't particularly like Kageyama, he still gave him solid advice (in his own bratty Oikawa way of course lol). The advice also shows why Oikawa is considered the best setter in their prefecture (even being recognized by Ushijima as being very talented). He is able to consistently give his hitters tosses that they want, not ones that he thinks they should get, which allows his hitters to shine. Anyway, thank you for your reactions Coach!!

    I think it's best to remember that younger Ukai is only in his 20's at this point. He was also not the best setter during his high school years so the fact that he knew little about tempos explains his inexperience and his attitude as a coach.

    I think Ukai giving zero technical instruction is just off screen. At least he's yelling in the ops, lol.
    Regarding Hinata's technique, in Japan often even people with poor technique can look pretty good. There's an old saying that "technique is stolen, not taught" so people are very attentive to form, but may not intellectually understand the reason or get results until later when they have more experience or instruction (which traditionally comes when you've shown you are dedicated enough to get the form on your own). The animators might have...exaggerated that a bit to save a little effort, lol.

      I'm pretty sure everyone has really good technique because of using references. Animators (or basically any artist) use references to get things faster (specialy when it comes to thing that are really hard to aniamte like voleyball, the author might be a volleyball player but the animators actually doing the show don't) and they probably used pro volleyball players to use as reference because it's obviously more available. And they probably wanted to make them look cooler because it's still an anime.

I think lots of people also feel connected to his backstory, of feeling like they fundamentally lack that spark people call "genius" (like Ushiwaka & Kageyama), and yet becoming the best nonetheless through a fundamental understanding of the sport and his role on the team.

      I've actually wondered about this.
      In the training/flashback montages in ep 1, we see Hinata hitting a volleyball against a wall while the girls team practiced, and then he ran over to Izumi to try and get some tosses when the girl's team left to go running. And then later, after the "first and last tournament" there's a voice-less montage where Hinata and the three 1st years bow and introduce themselves (or onegai-shimasu themselves or w/e) to the girls team. And then we also get some images of Hinata later training with a local adult women's rec team. (I will admit that I may have watched season 1 a ridiculous number of times)
      Anyway, I was under the impression that Hinata was practicing mostly by himself, unless he managed to beg one of his friends for help. I didn't think that he joined the girls team (we see some classmates teasing him about this, and he denies it.) The way I personally pictured it, Hinata was a teenage boy who had this mental image of cool male volleyball that he was trying to live up to, and he was possibly embarrassed or ashamed to actually join the girls' team. It wasn't until the crushing loss in his 3rd year that he went and took his new first years and actually asked the girls' team for help.
      ... Or at least that was my initial impression! It's based off like 5 seconds of flashback still images... so I don't necessarily have much to stand on here.
      When it comes to Hinata's technique, I always figured that he would have actually been a lot better come high school if he had practiced with the girls' team for 3 years. However, maybe he was embarrassed, maybe there were school rules or something, but whatever the case, I think Hinata basically spent 3 years hitting a ball against a wall by himself. (This is where I actually agree with Kageyama, lol). I think that after the middle school tournament Hinata became mature or realistic enough to realize that he needed to join an actual volleyball team, which is when he introduced himself to the girls and "moms" team.

      @Withro Anime Edits The problem with Oikawa's way of thinking and a lot of his fans's is that no, geniuses are not "automatically talented", and they have to fight hard too. You can't know it if you didn't read the manga, but Kageyama always trained hard since he was literally a toddler. We never see him in other clothes than his training gear and each time he's not playing volleyball he's training in a way or another. It's kinda mean from Oikawa and all those fans to think that "geniuses" are not worth recognizing their efforts. Kageyama trains as hard as Oikawa, it's only that for him it's utterly natural, it's part of his reason to live. And Kageyama faced hardships too, probably the most heartwrenching hardships in the story (read chapter 387 if you didn't and if you want to know). Everything isn't magical in his life, far from it. Until late in the manga, we only know Kageyama's backstory through Oikawa's point of view. Which is biased.

      @Withro Anime Edits You're missing the point! Oikawa hates geniuses because he has to work hard to reach their level, but he doesn't realise that geniuses are at that level because they work hard!
      It's like Oikawa wants a shortcut to be good, because he THINKS that geniuses have one, but we know that they don't have one.
      Ushijima can almost only think of volleyball. He started playing volleyball when he couldn't even write.
      Kageyama has been playing with a ball since he was a toddler.
      We know that Oikawa liked volleyball when he was a child (we saw him going with Iwa to see a game), but we don't know when he actually started playing. It's almost certainly at an older age than both the others, tho.
      Oikawa started hating Kageyama when he realised that Kageyama was better than how he himself used to be when he started attending Kitagawa Daiichi.
      The difference here is caused by the fact that Kageyama started playing at a younger age, so it's natural that he's better than how Oikawa used to be, but Oikawa refuses to understand this (Kageyama, during his presentation, said that he's been playing in a team since the 2nd year of elementary school)

      The alphabet is sequential and A comes first. So psychologically it does make a difference. Good teachers know that. That's why most teachers use colors to differentiate teams or animals. Haikyuu! has done both in previous episodes. So the distinction seems even stronger this time. It's like saying the Varsity Team, or the first-string players. It makes a distinction that elevates one group but at the same time relegates the other to a stated lesser rank.

Coach Ukai had very restricted time before the first tournament, so they worked on receives/passes as it was their weakest point. Without better receives/passing they wouldn't be able to get the ball up and do attacks. So, I think coach Ukai did it right, with focusing first on defense before offense. Oikawa is one of my favorite characters in the show because he's interesting and his journey tugs at my heartstrings. I can see myself in him to some degree, because I've always had to work incredibly hard at certain things I love, and I still got surpassed by people who seemed to be having it easy. That doesn't mean they weren't working hard themselves, and there's certainly a level of pettiness and lacking self-esteem in how I've felt about those people, and I've never acted on those feelings like Oikawa did, but it feels very real to me. My heart aches for him when he struggles with the complicated emotions tied to Kageyama, and that feeling of being "lesser". Every time he grows or learns, it feels earned. I don't think every character has to be a good person to be interesting and likeable. Although I'd certainly have gripes with his behavior if I met him myself...

    This is one of my favorite episodes in s2, just for how much it goes into the nitty gritty of volleyball and the lengths both Kageyama and Hinstat go to in order to improve

    The moments seeing everyone figuring stuff out together make me so nostalgic for when I used to compete in things.
    What a lot of people don't understand, and what this anime is great for showing, is that the actual matches and competitions are only the small part of the time you spend playing. Yes they're the focus, but most of the time you spend being heavily involved in a competitive activity is the practice and prep.

    16:28 that's a very fun and interesting thing to note because in the manga, hinata has super cool moments like the anime but in certain frames and backgrounds, you can actually see hinata not hitting the landing whenever he jumps to spike and block and ends up falling with his legs in the air! I don't remember how frequent it happens though

    • @az639
      @az639 3 года назад +1

      I think they show that in the anime too it's just harder to catch it. There are times when they show Hinata almost hitting the net because he leans forward too much or he fails in blocing because his hands are not the proper distance from each other. I feel like the anime is putting more effort into showing that Hinata is not good in receiving like when they show that he always hits his chin when he is doing the sliding receive.

    It’s so amazing that coach Donny can prefer the “anime things” like “the ball that stop” to the actual technique of the top setter in the world. It’s not only speak out how real this anime is but also showed how deep coach Donny know about volleyball insight too

  • @youngparis5888
    @youngparis5888 3 года назад +5

    Coach Donny: "If I don't have the best technique, and I continue to play with poor technique, all I'm doing is getting better at poor technique."
    That's like a quote I made when I was upset at people's work habits. I said "Just because you've been doing something a certain way for years doesn't make it right, especially if you've been doing it wrong. If *'Practice makes perfect,'* you've just *perfected* doing it the *wrong way* for years!"

    i feel like in this episode especially oikawa was a "big" person.
    oikawa's character arch is all about being overshadowed by pure talent and coming to terms with it or rather how to stay motivated to keep working on your own limitations in order to go that one step further. despite his tremendous work ethic oikawa always seems to hit that wall (ushijima). and in a time he was struggling with another loss to him, in comes this new underclass man, said to be a genius (tobio) and maybe even replacing him.
    oikawa trains even harder but still does not manage to beat ushijima and feels like tobio is about to catch up/overtake him (symbolized by the grappling of the jersey in their match S1).
    yet when that young setter comes for guidance he actually helps him with good advice... to some degree overpowering that tobio chip on his shoulder.
    its kinda funny that the coach does not like oikawa... since he is all about hard word on and off the court in order to overcome a certain talent gap compared to the geniuses.
    his attitude towards tobio with the mocking and "bähh" is just a coping mechanism to protect his mental.
    edit: some typos

    Oikawa is appealing because of the arc he goes through. At this point of the story, he believes that some people are just better at Volleyball because of talent and that no effort can help him reach the same peak. He is resentful towards Kageyama for this reason, which is why he acts with such immaturity and bad attitude. He is excellent at reading people and drawing the best out of them and has polished many of his skills to a mirror sheen. But his mindset is holding him back. The narrative gives him some story beats that challenge that - in Season 1 and Season 2.
    Plus he's fun to watch be an immature jackass too, because everyone around him calls him out on it and makes fun of him for it. They never show him being immature without a teammate or his nephew in this scene making fun of him, which turns it from annoying to endearing.
    Also Grandpa was in the hospital in Season 1 for heart problems.

    Coach
    The thing about Kpop is that he is a total goofball on the outside.. The thing with him is, he can be quite helpful, serious, and straight-up nice when the time comes, but he likes to keep this "I don't care about anyone, I'll just fun around" type of attitude. It's quite visible in the later episodes and is REALLY clear towards the end of the series (Not animated yet, still in the manga). I'm not spoiling any info that might be important, but just that Oikawa boi isn't a total prick or douchebag, he just acts like one, but he really does care about Hinata, Kageyama or his opponents

    IM SO HAPPY! That coach donny realized that that kind of toss is possible. Because a lot of people were saying that kageyama’s toss is a foul because it spins or whatever. And. I was kinda nervous that you’d notice the impossibility of it. But here you aree! Providing a real person that can actually do it! SO NO, KAGEYAMA’S TOSS IS POSSIBLE I LOVE HIM SO MUCH

    Kageyama always respects Oikawa and thinks of him like sort of superior being. Thus asking Oikawa for some volleyball tips won't hurt his pride too much. He has definitely experienced the worse thing, which is asking Tsukishima to tutor him in study. 😂
    nb: I just notice that the subtitle is clean and neat now. It must have taken you a lot of effort to edit it. Thank you for your hard work, Coach. 🙏

    The reason water bottles are used so much is because they're bountiful in Japan and small enough to "difficult" targets while being light enough to bounce and be moved with ease, plus they can fill them with liquid to make it heavier and more difficult to knock over... but mostly because they're extremely bountiful lol
