    Tsuki is actually confused this episode a lot. He doesn't understand why everyone is so motivated and trying so hard so he's genuinely curious and wants to ask the others why they're so motivated. Oh and he's definitely snarky towards Nishinoya and Tanaka but pretty respectful to the rest of his upperclassmen. I think those two are an exception because of well.... how hyper and silly they are.

    Want to point out a little detail in this episode that I love so much: Normally, in most of the time, Yamaguchi is always standing behind or following Tsuki. But in the last running up the hill punishment, Yamaguchi decided to go ahead of Tsuki. Yamaguchi is going ahead of Tsuki, not only in this running punishment, but also in term of the eagerness to improve and become better.

      @@thesazbak5342 i agree that the translation definitely made it hard to understand tsukki’s true motive. Combine tsukki’s facial expression and his (or the voice actor’s) tone, to native japanese speakers like me it was a genuine question, not him trying to agitate asahi. I think it was also a geniune question about how to deal with Hinata- who I think stresses Tsukki in more ways than one. But by the way he looks at Asahi and clenches his fist, I think his ambition is stirred. But he's going about it in a way that's not sincere and vulnerable, of course.
      Either way the things from his family story that weigh him down and his contrast with Hinata carry heavier meaning later on.

    Coach, here are some clarifications:
    The penalties aren’t decided by either Coach Ukai or Daichi. The punishments are decided by the four Tokyo schools who are the hosts of the training camp and as visitors, Karasuno is simply complying to the terms of the training camp. Also, this is a different location from the first training camp which took place two weeks earlier and lasted for only two days. This training camp however will last for a full week.

      I think that Coach Donny's point right here is that these punishments get the players very tired rapidly which makes them not have the energy to improve their new skills and that these punishments may be interpreted as a result of them doing something wrong "trying to change", which is not actually wrong at all, it is something that they should be encouraged to do. That's why he criticized the punishments.

    • @deadpola5489

      @bayu_bejo 3 года назад +84

      @@GabrielSouza-ie1tt I understand what Coach Donny said, but I think he take it too seriously. This is not a punishment. It's a penalty from losing a game, like "doing 20 pushups" or "buy lunch for the winner". It's completely unrelated with Karasuno's practicing new skills right now. They lose a game and take the penalty. All teams have agreed to it. It's like adding a little bit of stake to win the practice games.

    • @mikan3rd713
      @mikan3rd713 3 года назад +28

      Yes, the penalty is more like a game. Like, when you lose in card game and have to do something the winner ordered. So this penalty is more like exercise and nothing that serious. plus I think the point is to improve their stamina and technique. (like the Diving Penalty they used to do in previous camp)

    Remember in Episode 3 Tsukki said this: "Overzealous types really irritate me."
    The thing that I notice with Tsukki is that rather than him being respectful to all of his upperclassmen, it is more like he is especially snarky to loud, highly energetic and motivated people. The third years, Daichi Suga and Asahi, or even Yachi a same-aged first year are more level-headed and mature so he talks to them more normally/respectfully. On the other hand you have Nishinoya and Bokuto (Fukurodani's spikey haired ace) who he talks back to even though they are his upperclassmen, because of how they annoy him ("you gotta eat more!" "have more guts!").
    Thanks for appreciating his more quiet moments, can't wait for your reactions to the future episodes already!!

    The reason Tsukki asked Asahi about his thoughts on hinata was NOT to create tension, but because Tsukki himself is trying to deal with the huge pressure hinata's passion for volleyball puts on him. He has always felt inferior to him, and especially now that Hinata is going all out along with the rest of the team, he feels left behind, just like when he was too tired to get to the top of the hill with the others. He's trying to learn from Asahi and not manipulate him.

      Your English is amazing, don't even sweat it! A+ And I agree with what you're saying here, I don't believe Tuski had any malintent, but I think it's important to remember that not everyone is going to read a scene that same way and that's okay. Sometimes we miss things or misunderstand but that's all part of the experience. I think it's better to let people earnestly watch a show and get what they do out of it, only reaching out to help them along if they request rather than trying to force our understanding on them. Firstly, because it's a pretty unreasonable expectation, most Haikyuu fans have seen the entire series at least twice over and have analyzed and discussed every little minor scene amongst each other- there's no way a normal person would get all that on their first go! But, I think we're also doing others a disservice by trying to give them the "right" answers immediately. Missing things is part of the experience. When there's a character you dislike but everyone else seems to love it makes you curious to understand why and feelings like that are what helps people build a deeper connection with a series.

      It is pretty obvious. But if one only looks at blacks and whites, you're going to miss it.
      Tsukki starts by trying to collect data from Asahi by having an honest conversation, but he wouldn't want to accept he is doing that since that would break the character he has established to his fellow teammates. So while doing that, he snidely adds in a line consistent with his character to make it seem like he isn't really interested for himself, but is merely taking a dig at Asahi.
      This is basic. Everybody does this. Saying something else but mean something else. Espexially kids. Find it a bit distasteful how Donny here thinks because he said that, his motivation is only to tear Asahi. Especially perplexing for me, since he is a coach, but this is very basic human psychology.

    19:38 Tsukishima actually wasn't being respectful, he just couldn't block Bokuto and this is him provoking Bokuto for calling him out on it by pointing out the fact that despite Tsukshima being 2 years younger he's already taller than Bokuto and will probably grow even more.
    23:43 For the most part Tsukki really does respect all upperclassmen, at least from Karasuno, but Nishinoya is the odd exception because they have a subtlety unique relationship. The biggest nod at this is how Nishinoya treats Tsukishima. Like the 3rd years he understands that Tsukishima's personality is just like That™, but won't put up with it in the same sense as the first years. There are also small moments where you can see Noya pushing Tsukki, encouraging him to eat more, complimenting him, and the infamous arm bite.
    28:57 This is Tsukisihmia trying to have a genuine conversation with Asahi because they're in similar positions when it comes to Hinata and he wants to see what motivates Asahi when he genuinely can't see the point. You can usually tell when Tsukki is trying to provoke someone or is just generally being salty by the music or background.

      Also when Tsuki addressed his upperclassman, he was used his full family name and the formal “san”. He said Nishinoya-san. So he might have been teasing him but his language was appropriately respectful. He always uses more familiar/informal language with other first years and that is appropriate. If he used formal language with boys in his own class that would sound really standoffish.
      Consider the contrast with last week when Oikawa addressed Kageyama has Tobio. This was pointedly denigrating and designed to reinforce in Kageyama’s mind that he was the junior in age and experience and needed to grovel before Oikawa to ask for help. Tsukishima is a really important character, because in a lot of sports anime characters like him don't exist. 'Giving your best' becomes so omnipresent, especially on the focal teams, that it gets taken for granted a lot of the time.
    It's really cool to see you point out how often the quieter less openly enthusiastic kids are usually like that because they're in their own heads, and as a result often are operating on a slightly deeper level. There's a huge difference between thinking carefully about the sport you're participating in and having your head in the clouds though, speaking as someone who used to be one of the latter XD
    The biggest thing I like about Haikyuu is that it displays its high-schoolers for what they are... kids. A lot of sports anime treat their teenage athletes like they're pros, and yes there are some kids who have that kind of presence from a very early age, but there's just as many if not more who are still growing mentally as well as physically; their mental state is as important to think about as their physical or technical prowess, and has about as much of an impact on their play and improvement.
    I think by far the most useful thing about Tsukki's presence is to reaffirm that volleyball isn't everything. Hinata, the guy who usually talks as if 'not giving up' and 'doing your best' are a given, in actual fact kind of respects that Tsukishima... might just not like Volleyball. And he says it matter of factly, without bias or anger, because that's ok. It's just frustrating because he's PLAYING Volleyball and could be having a much better time with it, but Hinata wouldn't say that to him because the right option might just be quitting if Tsukki genuinely hates the sport.
    It's pretty brave of an anime/manga designed to bring attention to Volleyball as a sport to openly admit that, for how amazing the sport is... it's still just a sport. It's not worth making yourself miserable over, there's more to life than just playing you're best in this one thing... even if doing something halfheartedly is far worse than just giving it up most of the time.
    Excellent and thought provoking reaction as always!

    I'll endure all the commercials along the way to support Coach Donny.
    Also, a few corrections Coach Donny:
    - Their training camp will be for a week since it's summer, unlike the last scrimmage that happened on the previous episodes.
    - Penalties are decided not by Coach Ukai but with the host school. They had a penalty of diving digs on their last scrimmage that happened on Nekoma. And this time, it's the refreshing sprint on the great hills of Shinzen.
    - Since it's scrimmage for a week, all team members can have their free practice with other teams which is not mandatory.
    I'm very excited about the next week's reaction video. I would like to say something about a few of your remarks but it will spoil the fun. Another thing, I can really relate to you talking about creating walls in a relationship and not giving 100% that will not unleash one's potential.

    I think Tsukishima telling Yamaguchi to go on ahead during their hill sprints is a metaphor in this episode for his inability to put effort into getting better as a player. • @crimsonhawk52
    @crimsonhawk52 3 года назад +6

    I think a lot of Tsukki's interactions in this episode with his teammates is him trying to confront Hinata -- or rather the ideal Hinata symbolizes in his head -- by proxy. He confronts Asahi because Asahi is the ace Hinata wants to be, whereas Tsukki is scared of having ambition (lest he fail!). He confronts Nishinoya because Noya has the energy and drive Hinata has, whereas Tsukki is scared of putting in that much effort (lest it go to waste!). Tsukki almost seems like his heart wants him to be as invested in the game as everyone else, but his head is scared and so he's desperately searching for a *logical* reason to let himself enjoy the game too.

They both were told that the spikers have the lead in the fast attack, so Hinata is trying to lead by jumping and Kageyama is trying to adapt to the spikers. Basically the problem with their attack now is the position of the ball, not so the timing so maybe practice is all they need.

At one point of my life, i was too afraid of making mistakes. I am embraced the feeling of being mediocre and would always resort to using excuses such as "im only 5'9, my body isnt built for this sport, i dont have the talent to succeed, im the captain of the team so i cant afford to make mistakes, etc". It got so bad to the point to where it affected me mentally and i began to not enjoy the sport anymore.
    Watching Coach Donny made me realise something very simple and that is making mistakes is a part of becoming successful in the sport. Im in the middle of changing my spiking technique and it has defintely not been a smooth ride so far. I know if i want to succeed on the highest level possible, then i will have to embrace these changes and be okay on making mistakes. As to why Hinata and Kageyama aren’t talking: it’s because they just had that big fight where they got physical. They’re not really on speaking terms right now (which was why it was so cool that Yachi helped get them to work together)

    I feel attacked when coach said "when tall people don't work hard, that's upsetting" Hahahahahha I feel sorry for being a tall Filipina declining all varsity offers just bcoz I don't want to stay until 6 at school🙈😅

    I just want to say thank you for not dropping the series half way through I'm happy that you're going to continue watching it until the end. I know a lot of people who start it who just randomly drop it.

    It begins...one of my favorite parts of the whole series. Also re: your comment about the coaches getting together to hang out too, I think they do! I believe coach Nekomata made a joke about drinking with coach Ukai and Takeda sensei (due to the whole seniority thing...I assume it's a "you have to keep up with your elders" kind of thing) so they hang out and chat over food I'm sure.

    I never put together that Tsukki was good at putting up a wall against other people. Just in the wrong way. In the emotional way and not the physical way.

    Karasuno's hunger and willingness to grow really starts to shine through here. I love that they see how great their opponents are and instead of getting disheartened by it, they see their opponents strengths and want to make them their own so they can continue to fight.
    They also show great mental strength by continuing to practice new techniques. Even though they keep failing they persevere, no matter how embarrassing it might be to fail so much in front of your opponents they would rather be embarrassed than stagnate.

    I don’t think Tsukki was actively trying to turn Hinata and Asahi against each other, I think he was genuinely curious how Asahi deals with feeling Hinata “creeping up behind them” :)

    Yay Coach! It's the back story about Tsukki finally! I always feel relatable with Tsukki because I am as introvert as him. It is not easy to be vulnerable for me so I always understand why Tsukki acts like that. I can't wait to see how you react the next episode!
