  • The Temporary Railroad Track Is Now Abandoned! See The Last Train With 5 Locomotives Including A Mid Train DPU. The DPU Was A Union Pacific Locomotive. This is the Norfolk Southern railroad main line that runs from Cincinnati to Chattanooga, Tennessee. A dangerous railroad crossing was replaced with a new railroad bridge overpass. The final train was a good one. Listen to how hard the DPU is working. Right after that train passed at 2:28pm the line was shut down. The track was cut at both ends and then attached to the permanent main line. This video shows some of the construction work. It was difficult to find a good spot to film the work. The first train in this video was filmed at 1:37pm in Walton, Kentucky just a few miles south of the shoo-fly. It was the second to last train to run on the shoo-fly. The work was completed at about 7:14pm and the track was put back into operation. I waited until a little after 9pm when it was too dark to film and then went home. I was hoping to film the first train over the new track but no train came. Shortly before I left there was a local that arrived to work the industrial railroad spur at the north end of the shoo-fly. I filmed that train going down and back up the very steep and tight curves on the spur so look for that video soon. I have no idea when the first train ran over the line but I will film a train on the new overpass soon. Look how much dirt still has to be moved in order to put the new road into use. There is still a lot of work to go on the new roads and grading. We also see a railroad tamper in use and some other railroad maintenance of way equipment. The scene at 11:48 is the north end of the shoo-fly looking south. The scene at 12:27 is the south end of the shoo-fly looking east. The scene at 28:25 is where the old railroad crossing on Richwood Road was located. We are looking west. This video was filmed on July 18, 2022.
    Filmed on 4K
Thanks for watching! If you have time, please watch another video of mine to help keep my channel going. Every view helps support my channel. Viewing time helps pay for gas, motels, rental cars etc. I have a list of places that I plan on filming so watch another video of mine if you have the time.

I'll miss seeing the shoefly track updates, but at the same time it'll be neat to see the new track in operation. It's interesting to see them cut in the new track. Thank for sharing!

Finally, the shoefly comes to an end. It's been quite interesting to see what's entailed in building a new railroad route, and using a shoefly as a temporary detour. I can hardly wait until trains start running on the main line.

Sorry JT, I tend to comment as I'm watching the video. When this project is all wrapped up you should make a condensed video showing what's involved in a "small" RR/Highway relocation project.

Do those MOW vehicles check the track for truing it, making sure it’s squared-up?

    • @poowg2657
      @poowg2657 2 года назад +3

They're trued up using laser aligners and tamper/levelers then they run trains over it at gradually increasing speeds and then do a final level/tamp. Got a friend that works for Uncle Pete and that's how they do it. Now having said that maybe NS does it differently.

At 8:11 there was a former Saskatchewan Pool hopper. They were part of the Canadian wheat exchange in a nutshell. Only seen 1 other that didn't have the logo painted over, so some more history on display in the video.

On the crossing at the beginning of the video, the track is in a curve of small radius with an important slope. This is best seen with the height of the cars carrying containers stacked in pairs. This gives interesting images and increases the impression of speed of the train.

And then it was gone with only one witness recording. Great to have captured the final train which zipped right thru. Projects like the change over are pre planned with manpower and machinery in places an ready to go. In fact this weekend and the past weekend WI DOT & UP were going to install the new bridge over US 41 in Wauwatosa WI resulting in a 54 hour road closure but T-storms cancelled that. For the last NB stack train @ 2:05 note the demoted NS Roadrailer just like the old Thoroughbred set out to pasture. So the cycle goes

Thank you for documenting this historic day at Richwood, Kentucky on 18 July 2022, Jaw Tooth! You captured the last train over the shoo-fly! It was amazing to watch the workers cutting the shoo-fly and connecting the mainline to the new bridge. The operators of those CAT machines really know how to maneuver them to do what they need to do. Too bad you were not able to see the first through train across the bridge. I am looking forward to seeing the local train going into the industrial park to deliver cars to customers. The industrial spur looks like it is a sharp curve coming off the mainline. But that could also be an optical illusion because of angle of vision from the point where you were standing when you shot the the industrial spur.

Nice to witness the end of the shoo-fly. Looks like a well thought out job of the change over. Plenty of guys on site to cover any problems and the tamper and ballast regulator on hand as soon as they got the tracks connected. A great professional job done by all the team.
It's almost 20 years since I was working on permanent way jobs with on track machines, cranes, tampers and regulators. Before it all went mechanised it was guys with shovels, ballast forks, and jacks, packing ballast by hand to get a good top on the track ready for the first train to run over the new road.
Enjoyed every minute and would love to do it all over again!
Thanks for yet another fantastic video. You were really lucky to be there as the new track went down and to see the last train over the temporary road. Well done J. T.!

This truly is a railfaning channel. Laying track is the most important part! Without the track crews, there would not be any tracks. Without the tracks there can be no trains. No trains, no rail fans.
Great video J.T. love seeing all of the things that are a part of railroading! Well maybe not what the office people do. But it would be interesting and different if you could do a segment on what the dispatchers do, and how they control the trains.

I'm going to miss the Shoo Fly but that's still a great spot, it will be cool to finally see traffic going under the bridge when they get it finished also! Thanks for sharing the Shoo Fly with us! We'll have good memories of it!

Kuul to see this on the home stretch. What a massive project. Years to complete. Guy with a sledgehammer trying to kill the sleeper and rail.

I like to live in that house on the first train you filmed what a rail fan spot !!
The construction site way too many white hats & very few labours. Shame on the railway. Same in every work place. Too many foreman’s & not enough workers. Same in my work place. I’m a heavy equipment technician one man job trying to keep 13 men running equipment operating.
Great video again jaw tooth another thumbs up from this viewer !!
    Cheers man!!!

Great video and tutorial abt the last train running the old track at the SHOO FLY! Those guys have worked hard to get it done and to be put in service. It'll be neat seeing NS trains on the new addition and to see some switching on the new spur.

Fascinating to watch JT. These guys don't waste time, for railroads especially "Time is money" and the road is losing money when the trains aren't rolling.
