Trains Start Down Steep Hill! 0 To 40 In Minutes! Suspicious Truck By RR, 3 Trains Fight Gravity!

  • 3 Trains Tackle Very Steep Railroad Grade, Local Railroad Switching Freight Runs Long Hood Forward ( Reverse Locomotive ) And Truck Sits By Tracks For Hours. First train is one of the longest trains ever that I have filmed. It seemed like a record breaking train but I didn't count the cars, it just took forever to pass. It stopped at the top of the hill and sat for about an hour before slowly going over the railroad crossing and going down the steepest part on the way to the Ohio River valley. It was just creeping down the hill but kept going faster and faster until it was at almost booking status. Lol. Count the cars and let me know how long it is. I should give an award for the right answer.
    Then I went across the tracks for a different view and got another long train going down the hill on its way to Cincinnati. The 3rd train is a local that does railroad switching along the line and it was going up the hill running a Dash 9 long hood forward. That was cool looking! I think it was the L22. The truck sitting by the tracks was kind of odd. After I filmed this I looked at my video and noticed that it was actually there longer than I thought. It was sitting at the crossing when I got there over an hour before the first train arrived. I thought it was empty because it was there for hours but then I noticed that it had moved. It was just kind of odd that someone would sit there for so long not doing anything. This line is the Norfolk Southern Rathole Line that runs from Cincinnati to Chattanooga, Tennessee and is owned by the city of Cincinnati. The best frequency to use on this section of the Rathole is 160.950 and I recommend using 452.9375 for the end of train device EOT. This is a nice area for rail fans and I did see a few other rail fans watching trains here. A few guys brought chairs and were taking pics but not video. There is also a public walkway that goes over the tracks just a short distance south of here. I am thinking about doing a Premier for a video. Should I do that and what are your thoughts on Premiers?

    FYI a teaching moment: The reason the 1st train started so slow was for at least 2 reasons. They needed the gates and lights to be operating at least 20 seconds before the engine occupied the crossing.
    The other reason was because the train was stopped with in the track block signals. Once they start moving they have to be able to stop in 1/2 the range of vision until they either reach the next signal or they can see the next signal, depending on what the last signal was displaying when they went by it and or how long they had been stopped. If the last signal was red or they had been stopped for longer than the time limit they have to reach the next signal and have a signal other than red.
    If the last signal had been green or yellow, and they were stopped less than the prescribed time they can begin to accelerate once they see the next signal. Also they were starting into a curve where the vision would be restricted, so their range of vision would be much shorter than straight track.

    Those are called 53-foot articulated spine cars and are owned by TTX. The cars probably turn around because since it's the top of the grade, them trains be going slow. That was pretty cool how when half the train got over the crest it sped up so fast. Those were some long containers. The truck was probably waiting on some clear track to do some work.

    I'm always amazed by the power in these electric motors. Gravity was helping, but it's just amazing what a train locomotive can do!

      Were you aware of how locomotive 'Dynamic Brakes' work?
      Those 'Electric Motors' that you spoke of are also wired to be used as generators when the hoghead backs off on the throttle, then placings the selecter lever into 'Dynamic Brakes' and now the wheels turning generate electricity and that electricity is put into GIANT RESISTORS on the top of the loco hood at the rear end of the loco and that 'Resistance' on the generators(Traction Motors or Wheels) and resistance on the wheels. (It slows the locomotives in the entire loco consist). The amount of electrical resistance is determined by what selecter lever postion(aka notch) the hoghead puts it in. aka Run Speed or Run 1, Run 2, up to Run 8(Run 8 = Max Speed or Max Attenuation or Load on the traction motors.
      'Dynamic Braking' is used without having to apply the locomotive or trainline airbrakes. It's also a way to control the trainline 'The Slack'.
      Google search: 'locomotive dynamic brakes' for a better discription. Retired SoCalf freight conductor 37 years service, and it was an Adventure. The public hasn't a clue to all that goes on at a railroad.......and I've seen it all(you wouldn't believe me).......and then some. Hope this helps.

      @@wes5150. I've read about this kind of braking, and I have a degree in Physics, so I understand the science behind it. But I was not aware that it was put into practice in the locomotives. That's the drawback of being on the more theoretical end of this stuff. Thank you for this, it will help me appreciate trains a lot more!

    By the way, did you see the drone footage of the UP derailment in Iowa? Looked like a neat rr bridge before it collapsed. The guy flying the drone did a fantastic job.

      I watched a special show on TLC or THE HISTORY CHANNEL and it was all about trains and how there are over 500 people who monitor all the rail roads at any given time. Each person is responsible for monitoring a given section of
      tracks. They showed mostly CSX trains. They showed how and where they service they trains and evan how they paint them.. Everything about the trains are monitored from the control center. It was very interesting and informative.
      I think you would have liked it. I think it was on one of the Modern Marvel's shows.

    Former NS CO here, so I have to jump down with my trailing foot first here. To add to Bills comments above, yes this could be a delay in block rule, which looks to be the case. I believe they had a train ahead of them and they stopped, probably running on a restricting signal (the signals back up the hill look to be intermediates-signals with number plates). They waited for the train to clear ahead and get far enough away where they could get down the hill in Cincinnati without having to crawl. Now these trains could also be under a speed restriction due to a Form Y? I would have to hear the radio or see some train orders.
    The guy in the NS hi-rail truck had to be a Road Forman, possibly the Forman over the Form Y just up the hill (notice the approach prepared to stop signs at 17:49 just off the crossing, the actual stop board was up the track 1.5-2 miles away). They were probably doing track work up the hill, thats what the signs are for. Also, the guy in the truck could be the Forman over the Form Y, he would be the point of contact for the trains to get permission through the work limits.
    FYI, JT the graffiti names you see are the names of the artists that draw them. Kinda like a pin name for graffiti, thats the way it was told to me by some train riders.

    I just watched a video of a train wreck in Iowa what a mess it took out a bridge and distroyed about half a mile of track and 2 or 3 dozen rail cars some are tank cars laying in the creek water the guy got some good drone footage I enjoyed watching your show J. T. 👍😎

    I don't know if the auto shippers still do this but autos were sprayed with a paraffin coating which prevented damage to the paint on the autos. Part of the dealer's prep fee is for the removal of this coating. The Ford plant in Mahwah did this when auto racks were open.

    Articulated spine car. Or articulated Well car. 3 pack or 5 pack. That is what the A thru C or A thru E means after the number. You can put one container or Trailer on a spine car. Some well cars you can put a trailer on. Most well cars are just for containers double stacked.

    The last circuit for the lights and gates is usually between 100 to 300 feet before the crossing. On our RR the cross tie at the beginning of the last circuit was panted white. If a train stops in that circuit the gates should not go back up until the train clears the circuit.

    At 21:42, if u notice the diamond sticking out from tracks. That is referred to as a stop board. Cant see other side, but one is always orange (approach speed), then usually 2miles ahead, is the red stop board( where MOW is doing whatever work they are doing. That truck was most likely waitng for the train traffic to pass, or he could have been simply there to remove the stop board. But yea, they definitely can get some nice down time on company time

    Nice catch of all 3 NS trains! He really took his time with the 1st one but can understand with being on a downhill grade with the MASSIVE tonnage behind it. Its definitely better to be safe than sorry for sure to cause a catastrophic disaster. 2nd train had some neat graffiti on those AUTORACKS! Also nice catching that hard working local going up that grade. The guy in the high rail truck probably took a nap after eating lol. His job security is probably busy enough to not have to worry about getting fired. Thanks again JT for another great video!

      Yes being an Engineer is a great job to have, being a Conductor or a Brakeman isn’t bad either. But the only job I was interested in was the Engineer. So I waited until they were hiring Firemen which got promoted to Engineer. I could have hired on about 6 months earlier if I would have wanted to be a Brakeman which would get promoted to Conductor.
      The first train was mainly made up of piggy backs and stacked containers. The piggy back trailer if loaded was probably around 30 tons per compartment. The loaded containers are also around 30 tons each so the compartment with two containers is only around 60 tons plus the weight of each of the compartments which is around 20 to 25 tons. So a compartment with two loaded containers is only around 85 tons as compared to a loaded hopper, box or tank car which is probably around 140 tons.

    Regarding your question and what do I think about Premiers? I think that Premiers should come first, before anything else. Which is more exciting to you, Señor Jaws?     Nice view of those articulated cars :) Probably some dynamic braking going on during those downhill runs. The high rail truck was an NS crew truck and I wonder if that wasn't either a long lunch break or an assignment that didn't pan out time-wise.

    Have never seen articulated cars before. That was something different. Between those two trains headed down the hill, to quote you, they must have emptied several yards! Thanks for pointing out the clock tower. It was neat how it was the only thing showing above the trees. We were waiting for you to walk over to the truck to see if the driver was okay. Maybe he just found a hiding place to take a nap!

    The second train you caught was going downhill I can hear the dynamic brakes. The first train was going uphill and the guy in the pic of truck is probably signal maintainer.....

    It’s always cool to see heavy trains struggling upgrade, but every more so when going downgrade, when the weight of that train is pushing on the locomotives. Yea those are articulated spine cars for handling 5 53ft trailers, they are much longer than conventional cars . Nice little spot there JT, you’ve been there quite often. Thanks for sharing JT.

    Great excellent video, mr Jaw Tooth.
    A long train hill up long and heavy means slowly up, why not a DPU (double) in the middle of the train. That is why in Europa ride the trains by electricity and under 10000 Volt (kV),25000(kV). That means more power on the axles of the locomotives.

    FYI a teaching moment: The 3 or 5 sections or compartments or wells of the articulated cars are counted as a single car for reporting purposes. But for pay purposes for the conductors and brakemen, at least on the RR I worked for, they are counted as 3 or 5 cars.
    When I count cars here on YT I count each section, compartment, or well as a single car.

    Great video JT. That is a real interesting crossing and a good spot to watch trains coming up and down that incline. The extra details you can see up close due to the slow speed is cool.

      There is a way to watch the video in a faster speed. The settings under the video, click there and then choose the video speed that you want. I do that sometimes when I watch slow videos

    Epic catch jawtooth surprisingly there is a colman play right across the street from where I work and that is called colman yard and I see alot of trains go through there sadly I cant film them while I work

    Great video. Nice to see them creeping along and not just flying past at 40mph. Interesting to see the different degrees of weathering and graffiti on the cars. Any rail yards in your area that you can video? Maybe catch some shunting?

    After the 16th of September, there's going to be a possible railroad labor strike due to horrendous working conditions and wages. There might not be any railroad action for a while. Just giving you a heads up if you suddenly get silence on your scanner after the 16th.

    The intermodal cars are broken down 2 different ways. You have the spine cars with the heavy beefy frame down the center of the car. These generally haul rail/truck trailers but the fifth wheel hitch knocks down to haul containers once the corner pins are raised. They can be 3 section( 3 packer) or 5 section ( 5 packer).
    The second type of intermodal car is the deep well. They generally haul containers but some have hitches to accommodate rail trailers. They are also either 3 or 5 packer. As the name suggests the bottom container has about a third of the container below the top of the side of the car.

      Living just across the street from UP Sedalia I see any where’s from 2 to 7 packer units in a lash up but the most popular are the three and five units.

    The time the train took to pass over the crossing was exactly 13 minutes and 16 seconds. Not because of its length but because of its snail's pace! A long line of vehicles seems to have formed behind the gates. You just have to be patient! To pass the time, some drivers may have counted the cars of the train as some count sheep to fall asleep at night!

    Your radio looked like it was tied to an old style train order hoop - just don't forget that you left at there. Don't let UPS see those trailers stuck behind General freight as they paid top dollar to move their parcels. Those TTAX spine cars are heavy on WWOT as these cars are very heavy in the Chicago to New York corridor and also take domestic containers through HOosac tunnel. Quite the full-sized local running long Hood first and plenty of work ahead of it. Sadly Norfie doesn't cut it as a librarian and Sophie is just looking for some peace and quiet

    108 on that really slow first train. I didn't notice any sections. You were talking about it, but I was concentrating on the count. I counted each container or semi trailer as a car. 122 on that second train. I just want to say, no offense, but you had a perfect clear shot of that second train from the roadside, but then you started shooting from behind that crossing gate...🤔🙂 29 on that third train. I'm guessing the guys in that white truck might have been there to keep an eye on the trains. Or maybe they had some free time on their hands. It looked like a high wheel truck too. Have you shown us that hill from the air? I forget.

    I’ve worked project’s pulling power lines across active tracks the power company has to have Contact with moving trains through a RR employee and and they usually are on sight all day
