A strong CV is crucial if you want to land interviews for the best jobs, so this video breaks down the CV writing process into simple steps:
- What to research before you start writing your CV 00:57
- How to structure and format your CV 02:01
- Walk through of a real example CV 03:41
- How to write a CV profile 05:22
- How to list your work experience and structure roles 06:57
- How to detail education and qualifications 08:52
- If and how you should include hobbies and interests 09:18
Your CV is one of the most important documents you will ever write in your life, so it will pay off to invest plenty of time and effort in writing it.
A strong CV will ensure you are noticed by recruiters and employers, so that you are consistently shortlisted for interviews. Whereas a poor CV will see you ignored and not considered for the jobs that you want.
Ensure that you research your target roles thoroughly before writing your CV to ensure you know exactly what skills to highlight throughout the document.
Use a clear crisp format and structure to ensure your CV is easy to read and creates a professional impression on recruiters and employers.

@@liam-lh2nm Hi, We have a video on how to write a CV with no work experience here: ruclips.net/video/uG_LKVJjuAc/видео.html
StandOut CV thank you
I read hundreds of CV's every month. I immediately reject any with poor grammar, spelling or language. I immediately reject those over three pages long or those with ornate fonts or those that are laid out poorly. It sounds harsh but if applicants can't be bothered then neither can I. This video is as good as any I've seen, so follow the advice and put the effort in.
Richard Thanks a lot man. Good to hear it from someone who's on the other side of it.
Is there anything in particular you personally look for?
@@AB-bo8or Hi, I look for clear demonstrations of the applications of skills and knowledge AND the results. It's a bit like the advice giving to fiction writers - don't tell, show. For example, the all too common phrase 'I have excellent communication skills' - WTF does that mean? Give examples - 'I lectured to 300 students in my role as lecturer and they all passed the course', 'I worked closely with troubled families to ensure they received the right benefits advice and could therefore start to rebuild their lives', 'I met with 20 individual team members facing redundancy. I talked through the process and their options which helped them and our organisation cope with the change'.
Again, it's harsh but I reject CV's that don't demonstrate actual skills, knowledge and outcomes. Hope that's useful.
@@peterc2248 Hi Richard , thank you so much for the tips u mentioned previously , im currently writing my CV and i was struggling to come up with the right words and ways to express what i want to show. i hope the recruiters will appreciate my resume :) goodluck with your job.

I did everything in this video and immediately noticed a change. I went from not getting interviews to getting calls or emails from jobs to interview 3 times a week sometimes even more. Now I'm employed thank you!

Very to the point. For fresh graduates, would just add that if you don't have work experience, focus on your skillset, degree, language skills, relevant coursework and anything else you developed while at university. Basically, focus on all the things that you already have. Good employers just want to see that you have the attitude and foundational skillset to develop your skills further at their company, not work experience. Thanks for the video!
what about me as a 16 year old i only have my GSCE im at 6 form rn but the only qualification i have are my gsce ?
I'm 30 years old and decided to finally study civil engineering, nearly done with my first year and now looking for a intern job, but it's easy to look at your past and downgrade yourself cause you are way older than the usual 'intern', but I've operated heavy machinery, I can weld, I have experience in building and planning. I've had my own woodworking side hussle for a year or two and understand health and safety, all of a sudden the situation doesn't seem so dire. But starting a CV into a new career feels strange, it's intimidating at first, but I can do it. Great Vid.
Proud and happy for you . Brave choice , and great archievements
That’s the spirit! Go get it!
hope you doing well Hawk
Watched your video and literally a week later, I’m hired!!!! Thank you! Your template is the most effective I’ve seen
Please how can you make it , sorry my language not helping l mean your format , l became overwelmed .. I need help
I am post graduate but no experience and i have never applied any job so how can i wtrite it
Anfa Salah Literally the formatting is ultimately what helped. It makes it completely easier for the employer to read and see how the information is organised. In terms of how to write the cv, I wrote various drafts and sent it a free online cv reviewer and based off their feedback, I improved. Simple as that

I am an experienced professional who recently completed a graduate degree and wanted to move my career more towards clinical/management. I put in hundrends of resumes across three states and never got a response. I came across this video and literally followed it to a T. All of sudden I started receiving phone calls then interviews and finally I am fingerprinting for a Clinical Supervisory role for an agency. Exactly what I wanted. Thank you this video is absolutely brilliant! 👍👍👍
Update: I start the job April 8th.
That's great to hear - Best of luck!

Could you please send me your cv without your personal information, to my email so I can copy paste and add my own skills and education ?

Nowadays, the typical British style CV is even more simplified (in my opinion):
Contact details
Personal statement/ summary
Qualifications & education
Work experience
Interests & hobbies
(Maximum of 2 pages of A4 size)
Interest and hobbies? I wonder if that helps. If I were in human resources, I would definitely like to know about the applicants' interests and hobbies.
@@ltdaniel Providing that it doesn't take away space from anything else. For instance, if you need to remove education or experience to fit it in, it's not worth it.

I followed this and went to a CV consultation. The person said mine was too plain and looked like an academic writing. The person also told me to change the format. So I guess in the end it all depends on recruiters personal preference.
Researching the job position is one important step toward compatibility between the two parties you and the company, even more important to build cv compatible with specific company requirements of the job.
I live in the Caribbean, more specifically Trinidad and Tobago and when I tell you this is exactly how I was thought when I attended a seminar of a top recruitment personnel at university. Ihave learnt an important lesson reviewing hundreds of CVs that sometimes it is some little detail that makes all the difference especially when many candidates have similar qualifications and experience. Nothing beats being thorough.

Great video, thank you! I live in Germany and am currently applying for positions abroad. As the format for CVs in Germany differs from the one required in the US/UK, I am highly appreciative for this video!

I have applied with various CV formats and Cover Letter formats and I always personalise to each different job.
I do get interviews, very rarely, but never th e job offer.
It's obvious that it's not my applications approach that is wrong but rather the closed minde dness of employers and interviewers.

The hardest aspect of CV writing is conveying competence in an area the HR department knows NOTHING about. I came to understand this when I was using a lot of lingo standard in my expertise. HR departments would NEVER respond to my CV but headhunters who were hired by HR departments always did.

This video and the website it came from are two of the best sources of advice on CVs that I've seen. Since the last time I updated my CV, it has become hugely complicated with employers and agencies expecting a profile on LinkedIn, and the use of Automatic Tracking Systems by agencies and some employers. Could you possibly do a video that covers people potentially changing sectors (e.g. public sector to private sector) and something on CVs that won't be rejected by the various AT Systems currently in use in the UK? I think these themes would be hugely helpful to a lot of people.
Thanks Doug, appreciate your comments. In terms or writing a CV when changing career/sector you just need to try and make the most relevant experience, skills, and qualifications prominent in the CV (which can be tricky) and cut back on info that relates to your old/current profession. We have a section on how to deal with that in our CV writing guide standout-cv.com/pages/how-to-write-a-cv but we will get a specific video or blog post out soon to deal with. And don't worry to much about the AT systems - from my experience in recruitment, I know that your CV will normally land into a person's inbox before it goes into a database, so write your CV for real people firstly, then tweak the key words after if you need to. Thanks, Andrew
