  • Here's the next episode of Chordplay with a third installment of The Chords Of Van Halen. This is technically the fourth time we've looked at Eddie's legendary chord vocabulary and rhythm guitar style on the channel, and there's seemingly a neverending assortment of great ideas hiding in Van Halen's historic catalog of music - so let's dive in and dig even deeper into his timeless and beyond-inspiring guitar style.
This episode is an attempted "deep dive" into Van Halen's music, as this time around I've selected some lesser-known and overlooked Van Halen songs from an assortment of places. This includes tracks such as 'Aftershock' and 'Baluchitherium' from the 1995 album Balance, the Japanese exclusive track 'Crossing Over' from the same year, 'Can't Get This Stuff No More' from the Van Halen Greatest Hits Volume 1 compilation, 'Humans Being' from the Twister soundtrack, and we're even taking a look at an early demo recording/song from the early days, with the fiery mid-1970s track 'Big Trouble,' which was eventually rerecorded as 'Big River' on the A Different Kind Of Truth album.
Needless to say, there's a lot hiding in this episode, so if you're a Van Halen fan, a player searching for some new chord twists/moves to add to their bag of tricks, or someone looking to expand their knowledge of Van Halen's timeless music - this episode is totally for you! Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

His rhythm chops and phrasing on Fair Warning are epic in my opinion. I know everyone ranks VHI as his pinnacle, I think because of Eruption more than anything. But I think he absolutely hit his creative peak with Fair Warning.

You really gave Eddie his props in this video. Long live the king of rock...EDDIE VAN HALEN !!! I personally don't think anyone has come even close to his innovative writing and playing. There are some great ones out there. NO ONE HAS REACHED THE PLATO OF MR. EDWARD VAN HALEN.

My experience at a Van Halen show back in 1982 was incredible. Every mouth in the house was hanging open. He played and showed us the most serious rock star $hit I have ever seen. EVH is some kind of super-hero of guitar and music.

I know a lot of people will disagree, especially prog music hard core fans, but to me Van Halen is progressive. Maybe not the band in and of itself, but Eddie sure is. He was so ahead of its time.

Thank you! Awesome video again! I am a huge VH fan as well, so I might be biased, but yours is the best channel on RUclips. What's great is that you don't just take the quick and easy tab approach but always mention the chords and the tuning you are playing in. It is a splendid way to train one's ear and appreciate harmony. Thanks!

Great stuff! Eddie raised the bar for lead and rhythm guitar. Some surpassed his technical skills, but nobody ever came close to writing so much Great music that was both inspiring and innovative with raw emotion you can just feel. He's the reason I picked up the guitar as well.

"Big Trouble" was the 1st VH demo I was to find online in the early '90's using Netscape. The quality was lousy but couldn't believe what I was hearing...the vocal harmonies were unmatched in any of their other songs.
28:20 PLEASE do the ending part of the Big Trouble solo as that lick is the COOLEST PART. It sounds like a typical Ed symmetrical stretch pattern but I'm not able to capture it.

I asked Greg Renoff a couple of years ago, after some really pristine versions of the "Zero" bootlegs were leaked, if Van Halen could have conceivably released a "VH III" in late 1979 early 80 between "VH II" and "Women & Children First". He said, they absolutely could have and it would have been just as good as the first 2 VH albums.

Van Halen Specialized in Sus2 and Sus4 SWEEPING ARPEGGIOS which you can hear a swept Sus4 arpeggio in the guitar solo of JUMP and Implying broken triadic phrasing which including Sus2 and Sus4. The Van Halen late 89-94 albums used very dark chord inversions and just unusual chords which you should make a video lesson on.

Every guitar player usually says Fair Warning. I think that the original songs on Diver Down are the turning point of Eddie's composition chops. I would say that the original compositions on Diver Down, like the Full Bug and Secrets are the ending of old VH and the starting point of new VH. I won't pick a favorite because I listen to the whole catalog when I drive back to Lexington, KY from Atlanta and vice versa. 😂

Eddie hated overdubbing. He didn't need to overdub because he was a guitar god who played hybrid rhythm/lead. Jimi Hendrix was the same. VH's first album was produced by Ted Templeman and unlike Simmons' demos, Ted let EVH record with no overdubs as if they were playing live in concert. Usually done in one take too.
