  • Here's the next Chordplay episode with 'The Chords of Scorpions.'
Scorpions are a legendary band that reigned supreme throughout the 1970s-1990s and housed several pioneering/inspiring guitarists - including players such as Michael Schenker, Rudolph Schenker, Uli Jon Roth, and Matthias Jabs.
This lesson features a number of great chord sequences, progressions, and various sections from different eras of Scorpions music, and while a lot of their songs feature rockin' single-note and power chord riffs, they also had a knack for finding/creating interesting chord progressions and unusual chord movements within their songs.
The ideas in this lesson range from rhythm-based parts of 'Sails of Charon' to some of their well-known rock anthems and ballads - including songs like 'Holiday,' 'Still Loving You,' 'Coming Home,' and many more.

Hey gang - please excuse the brainfart ("mouth typo") on 'Holiday' - it's just an Asus4 (not an Asus4-sus2 = duh Dave).
Also, that song is from the 'Lovedrive' album and not from 'Blackout.'
My mouth gets me into trouble sometimes.
Great song by them and horrible comments made by yours truly.
    : ) lol
    \m/ ROCK ON \m/
    And...HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Glad you caught the album mistake; but those things happen from time to time despite ourselves. As I'm no chord whiz, particularly in naming them, odds are I'd missed that one w/o your correction. Nonetheless, now you almost need to do a second Scorpions Chordplay in the future, with a tune from 'Black Out', having mentioned the album, or at least 'Animal Magnetism', while also adding a Michael Schenker selection other than 'Holiday'. Irregardless, keep up the cool episodes as they are inspiring on a number of levels.😎

    Nailing it again!
So much of that Sails riff idea is all over the place in Marty Friedman's Vixen/Hawaii stuff.
Little did I know the Schenker brothers have been on the outs for years, alot of it apparently based around Lovedrive, much of which Michael says he wrote and helped bring them into a US audience.
Makes some sense. I'd say the transition from Animal Magnetism into Blackout was their first "Americanized" style change. Definitely a lyrical departure. Haha.
I only saw them once, on the Blackout tour. Rainbow and Riot opened. Whole thing seems a blur now. Haha. You're correct about Rudolf, he's got a sublime style of soloing that works perfectly for the song.

These really are Late Night Lessons as I'm in England. Another great video David, and it wouldn't be me, if I didn't have a gig related story to go with it. I saw Scorpions 3 times. The first time was on the Blackout tour at Hammersmith, only my 3rd ever gig. They were brilliant.
Saw them again on the Love at First Sting Tour at Hammersmith (they were great again), and lastly on the same tour when they supported the newly reformed classic Mk2 Deep Purple Line Up at the Knebworth Festival. What a day that was, an absolutely bloody freezing cold wet June British summer's day.
Bernie Marsden's Alaska opened the bill, followed by Mountain, who were epic, then Blackfoot who were great, then UFO with Atomic Tommy on guitar (not so good), then Meat Loaf who were awful; their biggest cheer was when Meat slipped over on stage, then the Scorpions, who simply stole the whole show. After the Scorpions had finished, we had to wait about 2 hours for Deep Purple to grace us with their presence; it transpired that Gillan and Blackmore had had an almighty argument and insisted that their respective dressing rooms be moved so they didn't face each other. By the time they bothered to come on, my enthusiasm had completely disappeared, their performance was mediocre, and the most memorable bit was Blackmore playing in Wellington boots :)
They had assembled an enormous PA to get the world record for the loudest ever gig, but half of it broke down from the rain during Mountain's set.
Bottles of piss flying everywhere all day long, though I luckily avoided getting hit. My brother's jacket being set on fire while he was wearing it, and Lemmy lifting the back of his girlfriend's Renault 5 up and pushing it on his own as they were stuck in the mud.
    Classic days of Rock :)
Oh and lastly, the Dokken connection. Of course Don Dokken recorded all the vocals for Blackout as it was thought Claus would no longer be able to sing because of throat problems. Claus got some miracle, new at the time surgery, and poor old Don was left with a few backing vocals.
Anyway, as they say in Spinal Tap, that's enough of my yacking :)
Thanks again for the lesson David, it's spot on :)

This LATE NITE CHORDPLAY is great concept! I love the passion and the fire and frankly the SIMPLICITY. So many youtube "guitar gurus" present these indulgent "lessons" that showcase what "amazing & knowledgeable" players they are with tens of thousands of dollars worth of gear in the background...I mean sheesh, I can't name a single Steve Vai song, but all the songs you featured in this video resonate with me in a visceral sense that all these twiddly twiddly players can't even touch! Thank you from Whidbey Island, WA, USA...

Still loving you is one of my favorite songs to play. I love the sound of that chord progression. Was interesting to see the little slide you do with your pinky. I've always walked it down from my pinky to ring finger. I don't play anywhere near the skill level as you and when I first tried to learn that song I didn't think I would ever be able to play it. It's always fun to pick up on different movements and fingerings that other players use that usually leads to figuring out how to play other songs that you thought were maybe harder than they are just because of how you were playing it. Looking forward to the next lesson! Keep Rockin!

Scorps are one of FAVs. They are so professional. I saw the in Tampa, FL on their ‘final’ tour with Ratt as the opening act. Couldn’t have asked for a better concert. The Scorps are just so spot on with a lot of their songs, too many to mention. However, if you haven’t listened to the song named ‘The Cross’ with Billy Corgan, of Smashing Pumpkins fame, give it a listen. The whole album ’Humanity Hour 1’ is a great mix of the Scorps dark chord selection and catchy melodies. If you listen and catch yourself singing some of the lyrics later, that’s because Desmond Child, of Bon Jovi fame, coproduced the album. I know it sounds like a plug, but a great band, in their element with the theme of humans fighting robots in a sci-fi world. Ok, enough of that. Amazing band, incredible talent and musical professionals in all the do. Hope they keep rocking for another 30 years. They are the Metal version of the Stones and deserve all the recognition the Stones get, in my humble opinion.

Another phenomenal lesson!! Can say I'm behind with scorpions" chord play" in their discography in comparison to all the lead work throughout the years! So this was beyond interesting!
*hope you see this - BURNING question about your recent Steve vai video* !
    .
I agree with you that flexible was like the zappa album that never was and that quick clip you showed of *Painter lover* has been stuck in my head and Playlist the past several days!! I'd say that single tune is my fav off disturbing the peace because he took the evh little guitars style but reallyyy made it his own, I certainly hear vai isms in that tune that made him stand out!
    .
With that I'm dying to know if you can say what the tuning is?? Both in Vais little guitar" in that live clip *and* on the record? It doesn't sound like a little guitar on record just his usual super strat of the time/Era! But I could be wrong! If you know it would really be appreciated because If I know whatever pitch /key Painter lover is on the mini guitar then I figure I can move it to the real guitar alot better! Or vice versa at the end of the day whichever you think is more helpful.
    .
I know you just showed that as a quick clip and then continued with the hot licks but I'd even send ya a donation if you can answer the mini guitar - > guitar tuning question! 😂🙏🙏🙏🤘
    .
Haha hope you see and can respond to this novel whenever
You have a sec thanks again Dave! And in case I haven't mentioned before - you ROCK! haha cheers from Niagara falls Canada man 😊

After my ‘76 Firebird V Bicentennial fell & the neck cracked, a luthier in Los Angeles made a straight swap with me. He gave me a ‘74 sunburst Strat with a Khaki setup & EMGs.
He said, in passing, it used to belong to Michael Schenker. I wasn’t impressed, though as I didn’t really listen to Scorpions much.
I don’t know if it was true, but I’ve seem pics of Schenker playing older, sunburst Strats.
Regardless, I got rid of it & all of my other equipment due to depression after I nearly lost my left-index finger & had corrective surgery.
Also, like an idiot, I repainted the sunburst Strat, because I wasn’t a fan of sunburst finishes.
Now, I am older & I actually like sunburst finishes. I have a ‘71 Yamaha SA50 that is sunburst & a mandolin that is sunburst.
Oh well, live & learn. Even though I got rid of the Strat, I wish I kept the original finish.

    Hi,David!
    Awesome lesson as always!
    suggestion: Yngwie Malmsteen's arpeggio sequences:
Too Young To Die Too Drunk To Live by Alcatrazz - No Parole from Rock 'N' Roll(1983)-this is my favorite arpeggio sequence.Steve Vai played this song when he toured with alcatrazz and instead of playing it using sweep picking he did it using two-hands legato.there's a video on youtube of Steve Vai playing it.
Disciples of Hell by Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force - Marching Out(1985)
Eclipse by Yngwie Malmsteen - Eclipse(1990)
P.S: most of Yngwie's arpeggio sequences happen right before the guitar solo.
I would like to know the theory behind (when Yngwie plays) the diminished arpeggio sequence a half-step higher than it would normally be for the given key.examples: Too Young To Die Too Drunk To Live and during the guitar solo on Far Beyond The Sun.
    Thanks In Advance!

Scorps were just a high level musical band. It just so happened that they like it loud and rough! The cords you went over in LYSM are great, but the real interesting stuff starts in the bridge sections. Michael also plays brilliantly over all of the twists and turns.

LATE NIGHT LESSON, here is Rudolph Schenker playing the solo of still loving you, to me it sounds out of tune but the fans are smiling happy not sure if its me or not. Also i do think Rudolph tunes his guitar up higher to F instead of standard E because the chords in still love you are higher tonality like having a capo. Take a look at the video and solo part ruclips.net/video/TUWCdkzgfSo/видео.html

Do Mark St. John from KISS’ Animalize album! Very underrated, solos in “Thrills in the night” are killer!

Hard to believe that PD has a Major 3rd. Poor Mattias sold the most records of the 3 yet never seems to get credit for being a total beast
