I will never forget mastering Zangief in SF2 back in the day. I picked him in the arcade and got laughed at by a bunch of Ken players who thought he sucks. They weren't laughing after I spinning pile drivered them all into oblivion lol
@@omegarugal9283 that was the basis of combos - as it stood Zangief's chainings were more devastating than others, but Ryu's de-dizzy combo was also a pain, unplanned for by the developers. To be fair though, Zangief was harder to play on console mainly because the 360 motion needed for his spinning piledriver was quite easy to perform with a stick while doing so with a cross pad was a pain.
@@RyoUrawa777 it's an inside joke as one of the creators of the movie hated zangief as a kid cause he could never beat him, so he's a villain in his eyes
This is my version of his backstory and history. Zangief was born and raised in West Caucasus in the ussr and lived in a small house with his 2 parents. He would often enjoy going out in the grass and practising his stretches and jogging in the fields. He lived in an average income household with his 2 brothers.
In the lore, back in the day when Mike Haggar was wrestling full time, he and Zangief were great rivals to one another, going so far as to use each other's signature moves.
Colossus is a much closer match - both Russians, both mountains of men, both driven for a single matter - and not only Colossus' metal form but Zangief's IRON BODY is INVINCIBLE so BEWARE ! Classic costumes also include red briefs and boots, but Zangief wears them better.
I used to smoke shit with Zangief. His clothesline and 360 throw moves are a nightmare to fireball spammers. Sidebar: That Teddy Long cameo was masterful. Great job, sir.
As an American whose favorite SF2 plater has been Zangief since I was 6 years old, o thoroughly enjoyed his character, especially in SF2 Turbo with his extended move lost (which my naive self) didn’t realize weren’t included in Champions edition and spend hour frustrated on why I couldn’t pull a gg of them off. Anyways, enough from me - thank you for the nostalgia and enjoyable trips downs memory lane and my childhood; I truly do appreciate it.
Ever since SF2, I always felt Zangief was one of the toughest around. Powerful, grappling, offense, and defense. A pile driver can cause so much frustration. Plus took time to master, his style does not hold back. A legend
Agreed. If a skilled Gief player can get someone in the corner it usually doesn't end well. Plus his Lariat goes right past projectiles which makes it even easier for him to get close
My favourite character since I started playing SFV I never changed zangief playing zangief is a lot of fun specially when you SPD your opponents you can feel their fear when zangief gets closer to them 😂
Great stuff!! His appearance is Street Fighter Alpha the movie was a bit weird to me as well; since it felt like they just made him act like he was blinded with rage going up against Shun, Ryu and Chun Li (who definitely got the worst of it in that fight lol). Overall, one of the most fun characters to play and always had love for this character; even though those grabs have CRAZY range haha
Designed by Akira Yasuda, Zangief was initially conceived for Street Fighter II as a character named "Vodka Gobalsky", planned to be a very strong but extremely slow character to play as . Concept origin Number 1 : Soda Popinski, originally known as Vodka Drunkenski, is a character in the Punch-Out!! series. He first appeared in the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!!! (1984) then later appeared in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!! (1987) as Soda Popinski. In Super Punch-Out!!, Vodka Drunkenski was the "Champion of the U.S.S.R." and the third opponent the player faces. He has a high defense and moves very fast with his "drunken punch". However, if the player dodges quickly enough and punches immediately afterward, they can set up a series of consecutive punches, which is very useful given Drunkenski's high defense. Concept origin number 2 : “Bear Hugger” is one of the opponents in the Punch-Out!! series (First in the arcade version 1984) . He has appeared in both the arcade and SNES versions of Super Punch-Out!! and will appear in the upcoming Punch-Out!! game for the Wii. He is the first opponent in the arcade game, and the second opponent in the SNES game. Concept origin 3rd and last : Hollywood Hogan young version of him chest and abdomen hair similar with Zangief and therefore Zangief being related to young Hollywood Hogan as well . For example: Hollywood Hogan chest hair : hardtickettohomevideo.com/2014/01/17/ask-professor-popcorn-the-hulk/hulk-hogan-chest-hair/ Zangief SF2 WW chest hair : weplay.tv/news/why-zangief-was-so-weak-in-street-fighter-ii-22701
Great video. You should check out High Score Score Girl on Netflix. The main female character uses Zangief as her main character throughout the arcade challenges and tournament.
Zangief in SF5 is basically just Major Alex Louise Armstrong from Fullmetal Alchemist. If the two of them ever met face to face, their muscles would destroy and then recreate the entire universe!
@@c.a.r.n.a.g.e4288 This would be EPIC - Armstrong's earth-based alchemy would soon be emulated by Gief vibrating his MUSCLES to create local EARTHQUAKES, forcing the battle into one of PURE MUSCLE ! KHOROSHO !!! (yeah, I'm hamming it up)

In Johnson's defense, I remember one specific, very frustrating afternoon of trying to beat Zangief in the SNES to no avail when I was about 6 or 7 myself. That occasion did leave me with a pretty strong image about Zangief. Get it? "Strong"?
I seem to remember early versions of Streetfighter 2 spelling the wrestler's name 'Zangiev', and I certainly remember the SF2 anime from the mid 90s pronouncing it 'Zan-gee-eff'. And Viktor Zangiev's name was certainly not pronounced 'ZAN-geef'. You could also argue the proper pronunciation is 'Zang-gee-off', as pronouncing the 'ev' at the end of Russian names is commonly done this way. One only need look to Mikhail Gorbachev for one example of this.
I know he isn't the most popular character from Street Fighter III, but I would like to see a deep dive on Sean Matsuda and then you tell us why you think Capcom did him dirty.

I agree to an extent with the Wreck It Ralph Guy that Zangief can be a pain to fight against. In Street Fighter 2 through until Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo I have had multiple matches on the harder and hardest difficulty where he's beaten me with only 3 spinning pile drivers. The amount of range the AI gives him is insane and much more than you get compared to when you play as Zangief. There is a strategy I use but it's not full proof. Either straight up jump kicks (then sweeps) or jumping backwards kicks with sweeps. Of course he could still grab you in a spinning pile driver which takes off as much damage as maybe 3 jump kick sweep combos. We know before he got the Banishing Fist that Zangief was weak against projectiles but since not every character has one, I've resorted to the jump kick/sweep tactic even with projectile users.
@@Invidente7 the thing is that in ussr only those who had very close connections to kgb were allowed to travel abroad freely. since zangief was never a political refugee, it is obvious where his loyalties were.
