- A 12-year-old boy is on life support after his parents say he may have tried a social media stunt known as the “Blackout Challenge.” Joshua Haileyesus was found unconscious in the bathroom of his family’s Colorado home by his brother. His father says Joshua appears to have tried to choke himself with a shoelace. He was taken to the hospital, but a week later doctors told his father that there is nothing more that medicine can do for his son. Inside Edition Digital’s Mara Montalbano has more. #InsideEdition
This young man had his whole life ahead of him. What a senseless way to almost die. My deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.

@@aud6r The title says that he's brain dead. Life support can keep the body alive, sometimes for years (Google Terry Schiavo), but once the brain is dead, there's nobody there anymore. Eventually they'll have to accept that he's gone.

This is one of the reasons parents don’t want their kids on social media. Kids often don’t realize what possible dangers exist when doing something they think is a trend.

In the early 90s we used to hyperventilate ourselves by breathing rapidly and then hold our breath while someone picked us up from behind. A friend of mine tried it and she passed out onto a glass table. She was ok but that scared the hell out of me how easily someone can get hurt doing stupid things.

This is why having no friends (aka someone like me) is better than having fake, idiotic friends. My high school has "nerdy" people making up the vast majority, all i can say is I'm glad middle school is done. I'm doing surprisenly well on my grades... Probably because public middle school stress with immature kids everywhere is now a nonfactor.
I'm 49 I remembered that but I turned 21 in 1992 but I heard other people and kids were doing that I didn't even do it at that point I was focused on my future.

He was in the bathroom meaning he didn’t want anyone to come find him. I feel like this was suicide and not a challenge

They “believe” he was doing the blackout challenge. Perhaps he intended to take his life. Sounds like they don’t know exactly why he did that. The blackout challenge doesn’t usually involves shoe laces or ropes etc. Nevertheless these challenges aren’t new. Existed when I was a teen way back in the 80s before the internet was a thing.

Holding your breath is one thing because your body will always force you to breathe when you need to. But physically restricting yourself from breathing is a completely different level and is significantly more dangerous. Keeping him in my prayers.
It was most likely suicide because if it was for a social media challenge he would have just put his head in a sink while his family filmed him and uploaded it to tiktok or Instagram

As a teen who spends a majority of my time on the internet, this "blackout challenge" isn't a thing anymore and to be honest never really was much of a thing (I know a few years back there were some stories on it, but I genuinely have never heard of it, seen a video of someone attempting it, or anything like that aside from news reports) They found this kid with a shoelace around his neck, he wasn't trying to "hold his breath". They need to consider a suicide attempt as a possible explanation. Not everything can be blamed on social media, "challenges" in general aren't that much of a thing anymore anyways.

I feel the same way too. They stated that the blackout challenge is about how long u hold ur breath. I dunno what kind of method they do but im pretty sure he knew using shoelaces to tie on his neck can kill. Plus like other comment said he did it in the bathroom. Kinda suspicious. I felt like he was indeed attempt suicide. But i understand it would be too hard for the parents to accept that

No a shoe lace kinda is not the best thing to kill yourself with. I've tried and all it did was make my face blue,eyes red, dizzy and a red mark on me. But who knows maybe he tried so hard to complete that challenge he won

This is why my children do not engage in "social media" type challenges. Children make poor decisions trying to fit in sadly, and cant be monitored at all times, condolences to this boys family. :(

I hate to break the news but when I was in school kids were doing this so it's not just social media you need to worry about .
The key is to teach your kids to use common since and not to be influence by peer pressure .
This wasn't a challenge thing, he just killed himself, the Blackout Challenge requires 2 people and is basically, you breathe in and someone touches you in a specific spot to make you pass out. So you need air and hands (and someone else) for this challenge, so no, he didn't try to fit in (because this is nothing like the challenge aside from passing out) he just killed himself.
Lord I ask you to help this young boy and give him a second chance, I hope and have faith that he wakes up .

I used be addicted to choking myself or finding a way to make myself unconscious. It wasn't a kink, it was more OCD and it felt like a "high." It got so bad people in school would see me choking myself and make fun of me. Looking back of how many times I did it it's a miracle I am still a functioning human being.

We did something like this in grade school in the early 90s. This is a very old trick, but when we did it someone or a few kids were around to help us back up after we blacked out. When the teachers found out we all got in trouble because they were afraid someone might not wake up.. We stopped after the doctors told us how dangerous it was... Poor family, stupid social media challenge... just sad all around.

About a year ago. A student at my school did the same challenge during lunchtime. He went unconscious while standing up, hit his head on one of the benches, and started to have a seizure. The ambulance was called. Thankfully he is alive. I give my prayers to the family
Social media is horrible. They manipulate kids’ brains into doing this stuff and it always ends up in a trashed like this. I pray for him and his family.

I’m not saying he wasn’t following a challenge, but it could be possible that he was trying to end his life. I’m not trying to say that trends like these aren’t incredibly dangerous and that they can’t lead to events like these, but i feel like we shouldn’t leave out all the possibilities. I feel so terrible for his family either way, my heart goes out to them.
