Canon knows that if new photographers had access to decent, affordable ASP-C glass, they'd realize that Full Frame really isn't necessary for most people 😅
Yes they manage to cripple. Another is the kit lens that went from f/3.5 to f/4.5 at the time when smartphones got better and better. The kit lens has a smaller aperture than the iPhone 14 has. Why would an iPhone user buy it?
Canon engineers are obviously smoking weed😂😂 They keep getting greedy and greedy by the day. I might eventually have to switch to Sony. I cant continue to be a fanboy to a greedy company
I have no problems with manufacturers giving lesser specs to their lesser cameras, but removing functionality/ease-of-use from cameras that are meant to be used by people who have never owned a dedicated camera is honestly ridiculous. At least the R50 had a touchscreen to offset the burden created by its lack of physical buttons. I know the idea is for users who are new to photography to continually upgrade their gear as they run into bottlenecks, but I feel as though cameras like this actively discourage newcomers from enjoying photography and digital film-making as a hobby. Canon likely has data to prove me wrong, though. I just find it funny, I guess.
I think this camera will not sell well. The lack of a touch screen, and the awful 18-45 kit lens that will take no better images than a good smart phone. This camera is awful for "content creators", since it does not have a flippy screen, and the kit lens is not wide enough. These camera companies just dont get how to compete with the good phones. I would invest $500 premium in a iPhone Pro model than buy this camera. iPhones produce much better video at minimal effort for most people.
Most people will shoot in auto mode so it doesn’t matter. I prefer a less delicate non moving rear screen myself and using buttons so I will be buying one as my crop body to use with my R8 as my full frame.
I think starting with an older mid range feature packed DSLR is a good place to begin. The M50 with an adapter or speed booster (then only getting EF lenses) goves you room to grow. EF lenses can also be adapted to fuji X and others. It's a good place to start
Use the older DSLR for photos, use a good iPhone for video. Lots of travel RUclips channels content creators dont have cameras, they use a good phone, a GoPro and a drone.
If they had committed to a body without an EVF but kept an articulating touch screen like the R50 or the M100 and focused on making it as compact as possible, i think then canon mighta had a hit.
At the very least they would have direct competition for the Sony z cameras. I personally don't see much point to this camera. Especially since apsc has been totally ignored for rf lenses. May as well just get an older m50 for very little and grab any cheap lense for it while you save for anything better than this. Strange as it sounds you would actually have more apsc lenses available and that's the major downfall for efm, it's limited lens selection.
@@chriscondict3104 I know, I was talking to someone about this the other day, that right now, there's more EF-M lenses than RF-S even though the former is discontinued. AND there's some Sigma primes for EF-M too!
Agreed on that one, exactly like M10 or M100 from EF-M series. I just don't understand the V10, M100-type cameras better in many ways. Slap the RF 16mm 2.8, or a new RF-S lens release like the old EF-S 10-18mm with IS. A very tempting camera for sure.
Fantastic writing as always Gordon. The dialogue is so thorough that I sometimes listen to your videos as if they're podcasts. I look forward to the next edition.
Holy crap Gordon does it again, my man!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Just saw the rumor for this 2 days ago and it initially sounded fine as a m100 replacement. Smashing a tiny EVF into a even smaller M50 is just really starting to defy some kind of usability with these cameras. Imho. Honestly this should have been a m100 replacement, I used the M1 for many many years and it was as reliable as it gets with plenty of portfolio pieces, shooting in snow, etc. Regardless of the limitations, if you know how to use cameras, you can make a lot of these limited form factors work in your favor and they can also be much easier to use (m50.. easy cake) But let's see what this review says hmm.... Thx again Gordon, cheers
At 4:44 I see a dust spot on the sensor. The R100 and the R50 are both missing what Canon calls their "EOS Integrated Cleaning System for sensor dust reduction." I would caution anyone buying either of the two models about this missing feature. Cleaning digital camera sensors is not for the faint of heart. Whenever I tried to do I made it worse. YMMV. Canon had this feature as far back as 2007 on the Canon EOS 40D!
The Canon cripple hammer is strong on this camera. I was thinking about getting this ....but no articulating screen, no touch screen?.....pass. Far too many compromises.
My M6 II paired with the Sigma lenses is so much ahead of this entry level R100. I'm a millennial that used a handful of no touch screen cameras, but I would still not go for this. Even the M10 camera had an excellent responsive touch screen. Honestly I am not sure what audience they are targeting with this one.
I use M6 II too but I am worried about Canon’s sanity at the present stage to be honest. The clueless Powershot V10 a week ago and the this R100 really make me think if Canon know what they are doing.
@@yao4738 Exactly my thought. I am buying M6 II again if mine gives up, I invested in a few good lenses for the M system, shame they are trying to create a new line that is incomplete (no wide angle lenses!!!) and it feels like they are going back to 2011! When something is good, don't change it, but Canon keeps forgetting there are smartphones and Go Pro on the market...
I'm not sure Canon has any idea what they are doing when it comes to their cameras. The stuff they release is just frequently odd. And difficult to tell who it is made for.
@@Herkulez1981 £629.00 with the kit lense almost 3 years ago. Somehow it's more expensive now! Probably due to shortages of various materials they use in production. For the money I paid when I bought it, it is a fair comparison.
I’m disappointed they didn’t go for the smaller M200 form factor for this camera… would have made a nice differentiation from the R50. It’s also even more irritating that the more expensive R50 is missing the old school flash trigger pin, given this has one.
The Fuji X mount seems more and more attractive with each passing day. Neither Sony or Canon or Nikon seem interested in building a complete APS-C system (entry level to premium bodies and fast lenses)
Never thought I’d see the day where my 200Dmkii (or 250D, or SL3 haha) was better than a Canon R camera. I’m surprised they went this way when they’ve stated they were going to stick with DSLR at the lower levels of the range. Maybe it’s to get people into the ecosystem then move up. Guess that’s my plan, to move to a R7 with adaptor and go from there, so might work here too
The 250D was my first camera and I’d have that any day over this.. the 250D was an entry camera but had some really nice features and was really small and compact. The R100 honestly looks like a downgrade compared to it - couple this with bad RF-S lenses and you’ve got a pretty underwhelming camera option
ikr! i have the 200dmkii (250d) and its so much better than this. purchasing this makes no sense, instead get the 200dmkii and later maybe upgrade to a higher end cam
Excellent video A good portrait camera. Eye detect AF and can use a third party speedlite , a gift , if you understand photography. And start using the new lenses
I dunno about this one, it's too many compromises to hit the price point, especially the lack of vari-angle touchscreen which has always been an essential entry-level feature. The R50 provides much better value for not that much more money. And still no wide angle RF-S lens, come on Canon!
I just got a R50 to replace my old M50 that was giving problems with wifi. The R50 so far is a great upgrade but I am so annoyed by canon removing the hot shoe (why?) This M100 with no touch screen and no tilt screen is a hard pass (plus old sensor ? Again why canon? Thanks Gordon, always great videos.
Hmm, for this price Canon is competing against itself... A refurbished EOS RP is 599 on sale, M6 II is 599 on sale, M50 II is $100 cheaper, a brand new M200 is $100 cheaper -- all of which have flip / articulated screen, and can take same or better quality photos. The EOS RP being last gen entry level full frame is still a solid introduction to the RF system. The M6 II, M50 and M200 all have better set of third-party lenses. For whom R100 is targeted, I doubt the high quality RF full frame lenses would be their choice anyway. So EF-M mount actually makes more sense here even if it's no longer being developed by Canon...
Agree! M6 II feels like a decade ahead of R100 and the aftermarket prices are very attractive. The M system paired with the Sigma trio lenses are way superior to what they offer now in the entry level R system.
If you're a "keep the kit lens on and never remove it" kind of guy or gal, you'll be fine. But there are probably used EOS R and RF bodies floating around for not much more. I just can't get over that sensor swimming in that huge mount, just taunting the buyer, with meager crop lens options. It's like they know they need to offer something, but they're basically hoping you'll give in and get more camera or glass than you really need with an R6 or R5 and FF lenses
@Gordon Laing I don't know why this looks so much more mismatched. And the crop lenses have to taper strangely to meet the mount. I just think this is a legacy offering of sorts from a time when Rebel cams were standard issue... there are so many more interesting form factors now that have lens options, built to be crop from the ground up
This is just too redundant. Already have the R50 and R10 for this space. Really surprised this wasn't a more compact R camera with no EVF. Really zero reason to get this over an R50. I caught that $200 off sale and got the R10 with the 18-45 for $899, only $100 more than the R50. I doubt this sells well but who knows.
This makes a lot of sense from a business prospective. It uses the same body as the R50 but frankensteined with M50 parts. It’s kinda analogous to how Apple makes a more affordable iPhone from last generation parts and designs. As far as it not having a touchscreen and 4K with no crop, I think this is geared towards someone that is exclusively going to shoot full auto and doesn’t want to deal with fussy 4K footage.
No, that rear screen... I was hoping that the Rebel T7 (2000D), and Walmart's exclusive T100 if you want to count that, would be the last Canon camera to NOT feature a touch screen. I personally think that this is a big misstep for Canon. However, unfortunately, buyers of this camera are looking at price rather than usability.
Right away I can say I think this camera is for little kids who are getting into photography. Beyond that it is too close to the R50 in price and lacks too many features to where I think most will just get the R50.
Been following you from at least 1 and half decade always joy to watch you. I am seriously considering this camera to get back to my hobby of clicking photos. Are you certain if it has in-camera charging via USB c port? because lot of the other said while the R 50 and r 10 can charge in camera but r 100 can’t?
Thanks! You've got me second guessing myself me. I almost always charge these cameras over USB as I don't like to take out the charger and run the risk of losing it on an early loan sample! So I assume I must have tried that with the R100, but I can't remember 100%. I'd suggest going to the support page for the R100 on the Canon website and checking the user manual for it. Of if you can afford it, stretch to the R50 as it's a better all-round camera.
I was bemused by the release of this camera, but I've slept on it and realised its purpose. It's a kid's camera, similar to the one my old man stuck in my hands when I was six and told me that if I wasn't taking professional quality photos within twelve months, I'd be living the rest of my childhood in a children's home..... On a serious note, given the target market, the R100 has a Digic 8 processor so I think Gordon's nod to acquiring a cheaper M50, with its slightly inferior autofocus but superior, articulated touchscreen, is sound. Better still, make the stretch and buy the R50.
Mr. Gordon can you check it for me if this R100 HDMI can support Clean HDMI for Live Streaming? Are it not supported same like M50 or supported it like M50 mk ii?
I REALLY don't understand this release. Like okay I get it, Canon wanted their 2000D replacement, but this seems extremely lazy, and not only that, it's genuinely a worse option than the now cheaper older Canon M50. The R10 and R50 brought a new life in that older 24MP APS-C sensor that has been around in Canon cameras in one for or another since forever it seems (I might be wrong but the first we might have seen it was in the 80D? Can't remember for sure) by pairing it with the newer Digic X processor and really I think that was one of the smartest moves they've made in recent years: People want cameras for the boost in ergonomics that it will bring and they will generally not take full advantage of any sensor, so even if the dynamic range and noise levels are a little bit worse compared to the offerings from Nikon, Sony and FUjifilm in that space, it really isn't the most important thing of those cameras. And don't get fooled around: Yes, the component name is different. Yes, Canon themselves say that it's a "brand new sensor". But it's still the same CMOS chip that Canon used for years, most likely with a redesigned phase detection array/system to better fit the new processor, hence the new part number. Because otherwise, sensor readout speed, dynamic range and noise levels are identical to the older versions (that also applies to the R7's sensor which uses the same technique, just taking the 90D/M6II's sensor) All of that to say that if it's not the best, it's still pretty damn good and the R50 was a very compelling replacement to the M50 being about the same size and weight, having the same features and being a nice upgrade when it came to specs: faster processor meant better video specs and faster burst rates: 12fps at this price point and with super reliable AF is a huge deal for the target audience of that camera. But the R100 just takes everything that was bad about the R50 (namely the lack of lenses) and throws away everything that was good, to a point that a Canon M50 is a MUCH better buy compared to the R100, even though the EF-M lens mount is supposedly dead. The M50 and R100 share the same sensor, processor, specs, menu system, control layout,... they share EVERYTHING. That means you don't have any advantage going for one or the other. Except on the M50, you get a wider kit lens. A more affordable and wider range of lenses from Canon as well as Sigma. A touch screen that is also a flip out screen. I honestly don't hold the M50 in my heart much, but compared to the R100, it's straight up the deal of the century if you happen to be shopping for a camera in this price range. Rumors about this camera a few month back stated that it would be an EVF-less camera with a touch enabled articulable screen and honestly that would have been an okay addition to the RF line. It would still have been cheaper than the R50, it could have used that 24MP sensor with the old Digic 8 processor and honestly it would still have been good enough for the target audience. Instead we got a camera that fit absolutely NO ONE. Not the young crowd that will at least want a touch screen, not the more enthusiast shooter that will gladely put 200 bucks more for the R50. What was Canon thinking?
I can imagine who might buy something like this, but I can't imagine ever recommending it. Almost everyone on a tight budget is much better served by more premium used camera gear than something brand new with every possible corner cut to hit a price point.
5:19 - exactly my point. Without affordable and dedicated aps-c lens selection crop cameras aren't that attractive anymore. Only as supplementary cameras for full frame owners
When I saw this camera it reminds me of the 2000D. Not having a touchscreen will make me want to see how this camera will sell to younger audience. This camera seem to target grandparents who wants to photograph their grandchildrens. This camera is also targetting low income countries where other brands are not selling such as South East Asia, Africa, South and Central America. Canon is still selling in those markets.
No touch screen is a deal breaker. Also, the fact that it is not compatible with the control ring adapter suggests that this camera is made up of recycled hardware from the m-series of cameras, just rehoused into an rf body.
I understand the budget choices Canon has made with this camera. Except indeed not using a touchscreen. That's just ridiculous given the intended audience and the Canon interface being so suited for touch control compared to the competitors.
If they were gonna cripple a camera to this extent, they might as well make it more compact rather than have it at the same size as the R50. There's still no replacement for the void left by the Mx00 cameras.
Having fairly recently (2019) 'invented' the inspired Fv Mode, and given the limited control options (one wheel) on the R100, it is disappointing that Canon decided not to offer this on its entry level models (R100, R-M50). The Fv Mode is a first step in gaining more control over your photography and one that would tend buyers/photographers to 'upscale' to more sophisticated models in the future. Maybe Canon missed a trick here?
In Europe the R10 is - if at all - only 50 euros more expensive than the R50, making the R50 completely nonsense IMHO. I can see a beginner getting the R100 and I think it´s good that canon is offering beginner options unlike Sony. That said, I still wouldn´t recommend canon to any beginner simply because of the lack of 3rd party lenses. Sad, but that´s the way it is.
Local pricing variations and offers are very important to take into consideration. There can be huge differences in some markets but barely any in another.
Fantastic….an old M50, without the best part of it. Great product Canon. From an upset ex M50 owner that is still waiting for some wide and fast R aps-c zoom lenses …..time to look elsewhere
@@cameralabs 😂😂😂 so Canon plan is to drop RF 24-70 F2.8 IS price from 2500E to 800E to help aps-c user? Tanks Canon I wait with hope 😂😂😂. (someone tell Canon about X-S20 and Tamron 17-70 😂😂😂)
The chipset digitex 8 has been made before that sensor built to work with the digitex x the same of the r10 and r7 . This could ruin the quality of the pics
Hi Gordon, I just want to know can we customize any button on R100 or R50 to use as back button focus? Since these two Camaras do not have dedicated AF-ON button. (I do not want to use shutter button to focus). Also please let me know if they have bulb mode as well.
I am wondering if Canon are targeting this at lower income markets. New RF-s lenses would be welcome, but I am wondering if the customer base for the R100 - R10 are happy with their zoom kit lens and unlikely to purchase more lenses
many people just want a photo camera and dont need flippy screen so not a bad deal, but they shouldve used the r50 sensor, disappointed with the unusable 4k. you would find the m50 cheaper and that might be a better deal.
They need to kit this thing with primes. Anyone who has the poor luck to score one of these with that kit lens is going to be disappointed when their iPhone takes better photos. Most of the target audience will be clueless that it’s the lens that’s responsible for the poor results and then just go back to using their phone.
Sad that it's not just the RF successor to the M200. I'd rather have the flip up touch screen, and no EVF to save costs. I swear when they try to make stuff easier to use they somehow make it harder to use. These cookie cutter RF cameras are making me worry that the M6II isn't coming to RF so I will just have to invest into the dead EOS M system and hope I don't need lenses. 😢 What a waste of production resources...
A useful camera for government agencies that require to take photos for I.D. cards, for me to just to have a digital body for my EF lenses as even consumer film is too expensive. But I don't see smartphone users feeling they are upgrading to it when the smartphone companies entice them (us?) with good looks in both hardware and software U.I. Smartphones are like fashion statements and Tik Tokers, smartphone users, seem to gravitate towards cameras with nice looks like the Fujifilm X100, or digicams, because any modern camera is technically good enough IMHO.
@@atlasbesikniyo8753 Oh, I agree - it's definitely better that way. And I can on my R5/R7 (actually, the R5 of course only supports standard flash types, since it's pre-smart-shoe). But it's possible to use these flashes on the R50, still.
No touch AT ALL? My old SL1 has a touch screen! This is a painful step forward for canon into their rf world ... but at least they're taking that step for entry level. I thought the r50 was as cheap as they would get.
Looks like Canon decided to join the retro camera party. Unfortunately Canon decided to base their retro camera on 2008. While everyone else went with a 1970s throwback. With the fixed screen and minimal controls, it looks like my EOS 1000D. However the price looks good and im sure its good camera to use.
I would buy a smartphone instead of this camera. I don't understand how companies plan to compete with cell phones if the prices of cameras with full frame sensors don't drop. That's where the difference is really noticeable and it would be a game changer for most of the casuals, I don't understand how they don't see it. Unnecessary release
How on earth that my old 1200D (Rebel T5) and M50 duo is somewhat equal to these new cameras? Canon should have stopped with R10 and R7 body and focus on RF-S lenses. Where is my equal to EFS 10-18mm RF-S lens?
It's a $479 entry level camera and it's hundreds of dollars cheaper than any of the APS-C entry level offerings from the competition. What exactly are you expecting?
$480 body only? Worse specs than an m50 for $10 more. They’re just putting this out to finally kill the m-mount, while at the same time killing 3rd party electronic access to RF mount. Pretty slimy stuff Canon
I kinda like it but there are some weird sacrifices. To me its the price that doesnt make much sense. Its a third of the R6 sure, but my old non-mirrorless camera was cheaper than that and had more features of the R6 than this one does in terms of hardware.
Looks great for a family camera, arguably better than r50 for anyone who travels with a flash. May buy this and will almost certainly do so if they release a small rf-s 22mm f2 or f2.8. P.s. great review too thank you. Don't think I heard anything about autofocus quality and tracking. Is it about as good as the r50 for human eye tracking, and does it do well in dark and backlit situations? E.g. is the AI head/eye programming and stickiness more like r8/r6ii vs r6 or rp which struggle to lock on eyes in those conditions?
It's basically the same as the M50, so it lacks the subject detection sophistication of the other new Canons, but it should be fine for human face and eye.
A good idea but a not so good implementation. The last few years we saw, unfortunately, a decline in entry level cameras because everyone thought that Smartphones will be enough. But no touchscreen in 2023 is... lazy. This would not increase the cost by a lot unless Canon has a few left from 2012 🤣
Was thinking of getting this camera but it has no touch screen. I would even pay more. The Size and features are nice but no touch screen is a deal breaker. This is 2023.
Canon's proprietary-ness of their own hot shoe and lens mount with no third party options is turning me away from them as an option. I'm currently debating between the R50 and the Sony a6400, both with kit lenses, as a first camera mainly for travel, street and landscape photography with the thought about my options in the future when I will want to move to FF. Which one would be the better choice?
@Atlas Besik Niyo ...that is quite out of my budget range. Both the R50 and the a6400 are around 1-1.1k dollars here, and just the X-S10 is about 1.4k. Is it likely that Canon are ever going to bother with 3rd party RF?
At this price point? Where else are you going to look? This is by far cheaper than any of the other new APS-C entry level offerings. The Nikon Z30 is over $700, the Sony ZV-E10 is $700 and the Fuji X-S20 is an absurd $1,300. $479 is a steal in comparison.

@@michaelbell75 yeah. Everyone is admired with sigma lenses and only you find it crap))) taking into account that there is no any rf lenses for canon apsc.
The biggest problem with this is lack of rotating articulating screen making this not good for content creators. How does someone film themselves in vlogs? Add an external monitor then? Most people are better off buying R10 instead of R100. They should have done what Nikon did with Z30, no evf and rotating screen. A Nikon Z30 is a better value.

Canon's lack of effort in developing new RF-S lenses while restricting third-party lenses is quite frustrating.
Canon knows that if new photographers had access to decent, affordable ASP-C glass, they'd realize that Full Frame really isn't necessary for most people 😅
@@Noojtxeeg and it's userbase will be filled by everyone Canon deems as "undesirable audience"
Canon wants to gatekeep its userbase and build a more exclusive brand image later on
There are a lot of ef and ef-s lens for this camera. They work perfectly fine with the adapter. And it doesn't add that much weight or size.
I fear RFs is the new M.
Not having a touch screen really makes this product obsolete at the start for literally any user under 30 today. It’s sad but it’s so true.
I mean, young people are currently resurrecting film photography. Pretty sure they can handle no touch screen.
@Okaro while I agree it's bad, you are surely not comparing a phones aperture to an apsc one right?
My guess is this camera is made to push people into buying the R50 instead.
And to potentially gatekeep its user base, and to build a more premium image later on similar to Leica
@@jeni719 except if they are purists
Most people will shoot in auto mode so it doesn’t matter.
I prefer a less delicate non moving rear screen myself and using buttons so I will be buying one as my crop body to use with my R8 as my full frame.
I think starting with an older mid range feature packed DSLR is a good place to begin. The M50 with an adapter or speed booster (then only getting EF lenses) goves you room to grow. EF lenses can also be adapted to fuji X and others. It's a good place to start
5d mk3 is cheaper and will shoot better photos
You can go for R50 with speedbooster
I would forget about RF-S cameras in general if I were to recommend a camera to a beginner.
Use the older DSLR for photos, use a good iPhone for video. Lots of travel RUclips channels content creators dont have cameras, they use a good phone, a GoPro and a drone.
Why would anyone buy this over a more compact and better M series camera?
If they had committed to a body without an EVF but kept an articulating touch screen like the R50 or the M100 and focused on making it as compact as possible, i think then canon mighta had a hit.
Yeah, that could have been better
@@cameralabs Could not agree more, good sire. Sigma APSC trinity for RF-S SHOULD have been approved long ago when Canon released R10 and R7.
Fantastic writing as always Gordon. The dialogue is so thorough that I sometimes listen to your videos as if they're podcasts. I look forward to the next edition.
Thanks! Yes, i write them to hopefully work in audio only...
Holy crap Gordon does it again, my man!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Just saw the rumor for this 2 days ago and it initially sounded fine as a m100 replacement.
Regardless of the limitations, if you know how to use cameras, you can make a lot of these limited form factors work in your favor and they can also be much easier to use (m50.. easy cake)
But let's see what this review says hmm.... Thx again Gordon, cheers
Yes, it's more of a 2000D and M100 replacement than the 250D / M50
Your books are all over our public libraries here in W Canada, Gordon
Excellent! Even Digital Retro?
At 4:44 I see a dust spot on the sensor. The R100 and the R50 are both missing what Canon calls their "EOS Integrated Cleaning System for sensor dust reduction."
I would caution anyone buying either of the two models about this missing feature. Cleaning digital camera sensors is not for the faint of heart. Whenever I tried to do I made it worse. YMMV.
Canon had this feature as far back as 2007 on the Canon EOS 40D!
....they removed the touch screen?! I seriously believe that kills this camera's appeal. You're right, that was just taking it a little too far.
Looks o be an RF mount 2000D, only you can buy the 2000D for half the price and have plenty of affordable lenses to choose from.
Your m6ii Was more expensive to
I'm not sure Canon has any idea what they are doing when it comes to their cameras.
It's so wee!
Also interesting to see them try a fixed screen. This is definitely a very cost optimized build.
Yes, but remember the 2000D had a fixed screen
@@cameralabs 5 years ago...
Don't mind the fixed screen but the lack of touch screen is a deal breaker for the intended market.
I’m disappointed they didn’t go for the smaller M200 form factor for this camera… would have made a nice differentiation from the R50.
It’s also even more irritating that the more expensive R50 is missing the old school flash trigger pin, given this has one.
My guess is that this camera is just recycled hardware from unsold m- series of cameras, rehoused into an rf camera body.
Look at the flange, you cannot make it smaller...
So true. M 200 form factor was so much nice for a casual shooter. That is why I am considering Nikon Z 30.
The Fuji X mount seems more and more attractive with each passing day. Neither Sony or Canon or Nikon seem interested in building a complete APS-C system (entry level to premium bodies and fast lenses)
I would also consider olympus or panasonic. The difference between 1.6 and 2.0 crop is not that of a big deal imo
Excellent video
A good portrait camera.
Eye detect AF and can use a third party speedlite , a gift , if you understand photography.
And start using the new lenses
Great video. It does seem like a lot of money considering the many limitations. I’ll stick with my 80D with a myriad of third party lenses!
Hi Gordon from Camera Labs!
Hello Techno Panda!
I dunno about this one, it's too many compromises to hit the price point, especially the lack of vari-angle touchscreen which has always been an essential entry-level feature. The R50 provides much better value for not that much more money.
And still no wide angle RF-S lens, come on Canon!
I think that's the point of this camera!
It's to make the R50 a much more sensible purchase.
RP is definitely a good choice above all APS-C
Agree! M6 II feels like a decade ahead of R100 and the aftermarket prices are very attractive. The M system paired with the Sigma trio lenses are way superior to what they offer now in the entry level R system.
I wish third party lenses are still released in the ef-m mount as I believe there's still market for it.
Thanks for the review.
Remember they sold plenty of APSC DSLRs with the same size sensor in the same diameter mount!
So a person with a smartphone?
No, that rear screen... I was hoping that the Rebel T7 (2000D), and Walmart's exclusive T100 if you want to count that, would be the last Canon camera to NOT feature a touch screen. I personally think that this is a big misstep for Canon. However, unfortunately, buyers of this camera are looking at price rather than usability.
I am a Canon fanboy but I have to say the R100 sounds like an M50 Mark -1 ... or perhaps a Mark - 0.5, given the slightly better autofocus.
Right away I can say I think this camera is for little kids who are getting into photography. Beyond that it is too close to the R50 in price and lacks too many features to where I think most will just get the R50.
I like the fix screen, this will not fail as the artuculated ones. My olympus m10 fail on that
Good point, it is more robust without a hinge
Has this camera the minimum shutter speed option?
Tbh I would recommend a used RP instead.
Choose the R50 anytime! It's worth the extra cost. Combine it with a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 to have a compact, yet versatile combination.
I agree
It would justify a purchase from me if it had UVC protocol, meaning it can be used as a webcam.
Hmm, good question, I'm not sure, but I suspect it shares a LOT of the limitations of the M50
@@atlasbesikniyo8753 yeah me too also.
I'm curious on how it would perform in underwater photography
Well you'd need some kind of housing for starters! But seriously, it would be similar to other APSC cameras in quality.
@@cameralabs I figured as much I guess with a good housing and lighting it should be perfect which are critical for underwater photography

How long can you record video footage?
Because otherwise, sensor readout speed, dynamic range and noise levels are identical to the older versions (that also applies to the R7's sensor which uses the same technique, just taking the 90D/M6II's sensor)
All of that to say that if it's not the best, it's still pretty damn good and the R50 was a very compelling replacement to the M50 being about the same size and weight, having the same features and being a nice upgrade when it came to specs: faster processor meant better video specs and faster burst rates: 12fps at this price point and with super reliable AF is a huge deal for the target audience of that camera.
I see this as a replacement for the T 100 not T7.
I can imagine who might buy something like this, but I can't imagine ever recommending it. Almost everyone on a tight budget is much better served by more premium used camera gear than something brand new with every possible corner cut to hit a price point.
Gotta use up those leftover M50 parts :) Really would be awesome if EFM could be adapted to RFS.
In south east asia many user canon move to sony and Fujifilm
Sadly no interval timer option for timelapse shooting. No touchscreen, it is a serious lack for such type of camera today.
Welcome back to the 90's 🤠
Fantastic….an old M50, without the best part of it. Great product Canon. From an upset ex M50 owner that is still waiting for some wide and fast R aps-c zoom lenses …..time to look elsewhere

Can i attached ef to r mount to connect my ef lens with this camera?
Yes
I am wondering if Canon are targeting this at lower income markets. New RF-s lenses would be welcome, but I am wondering if the customer base for the R100 - R10 are happy with their zoom kit lens and unlikely to purchase more lenses
You're right, many of the entry-level buyers never change the kit zoom.
many people just want a photo camera and dont need flippy screen so not a bad deal, but they shouldve used the r50 sensor, disappointed with the unusable 4k. you would find the m50 cheaper and that might be a better deal.
Yep, I reckon the M50 could be a good option
with the pancake lens... perfect
Are you starting out with photography and want to learn, then a nikon d200 is £75 second hand... Just saying.
Are you selling one Marvin 😂 jk
You can't grow with that...
The m50 with an RF mount
What a waste of production resources...
4:52 None, apparently, Canon will take you to court if you think to produce an RF AF lens.
At the moment, but they are contemplating case by case deals
No. In China Yongnuo and Meike are selling the 85mm f1.8 again. They didn't mention RF in the product description and Canon let them off.

AFAIK, you can use a standard flash on the R50, if you use the funny Canon shoe adapter.
Which is an additional accessory that you have to purchase separately. It'd be nice if you can use tregular flashes right out of the box.
I feel like I can still keep my Canon 1300D if this will be the next rebel lineup
Amazing review, thanks!
Lack of touch screen makes this camera quite useless imo 😢
Mirrorless is BRILLIANT: - have you seen what it's done to the prices of used top quality pro DSLRs lately? 😜
EXACTLY!
When Canon decided to make a more photo-centric entry level camera
I would buy a smartphone instead of this camera. I don't understand how companies plan to compete with cell phones if the prices of cameras with full frame sensors don't drop. That's where the difference is really noticeable and it would be a game changer for most of the casuals, I don't understand how they don't see it. Unnecessary release
How on earth that my old 1200D (Rebel T5) and M50 duo is somewhat equal to these new cameras? Canon should have stopped with R10 and R7 body and focus on RF-S lenses. Where is my equal to EFS 10-18mm RF-S lens?
Yes, we need a wide RFS zoom ASAP!
I don't see the point of it tbh. But why not after all, another option on the market won't hurt.
So they made a new M50 without the articulating screen. Very disappointing

Pretty slimy stuff Canon
I understand the target audience and price strategy but no touch screen in 2023 is right against the target audience.
@@cameralabs thanks.
Dumbed down R50 going too far, Canon should made the R100 evf-less M6 design
An EVF-less design would have been interesting. I wonder how well the M100 and M200 sold?
Fuji just announced the X-S20. Look into that or its predecessor, the X-S10.

...that is quite out of my budget range. Both the R50 and the a6400 are around 1-1.1k dollars here, and just the X-S10 is about 1.4k. Is it likely that Canon are ever going to bother with 3rd party RF?
@@benjaminzarkhin1293 I expect a price drop for the X-S10 soon. As for third-party rf-s lenses, I would not put my hopes up.
At this price point and lack of lenses would be looking elsewhere
Sony, fuji even nikon apsc now has third party lenses!)
@@michaelbell75 but you don't have sigma f1.4 quartet (was a trio), no samyang 12mm f2, no viltrox f1.4... no tamron or sigma zooms... and main investment is always lenses) yes you can adapt old ef lenses but it's not what everybody wants. However I must agree that sigma 18-35 f1.8 is outstanding. However everything with adapter.
@@Garbid I owned the Sigma 30 f/1.4 for the M system and it was garbage. I just rented one over the weekend for my newly acquired NEX 5R thinking the Sony version would be better, still garbage. Was not impressed with the Viltrox 33 1.4 on my M50 II either. APS-C lenses are just garbage in general. MUCH better off with FF lenses. Even the cheap RF 35 1.8 on my R10 performs worlds better than the Sigma or Viltrox ever did on my M50 or NEX. Night and day difference.
@@michaelbell75 yeah. Everyone is admired with sigma lenses and only you find it crap))) taking into account that there is no any rf lenses for canon apsc.
No USB Webcam support... Cripple Hammer on the UVC
Interesting. Almost sounds like a "why bother".
Most flop camera ever from canon hand down instead buy canon m50 ii or r 50
The biggest problem with this is lack of rotating articulating screen making this not good for content creators. How does someone film themselves in vlogs? Add an external monitor then? Most people are better off buying R10 instead of R100. They should have done what Nikon did with Z30, no evf and rotating screen. A Nikon Z30 is a better value.
It's not aimed at vloggers. For that Canon would recommend the R50 upwards.
Doesn't do 4K 60fps in 2023, so no use 👎
Name another entry level camera released in 2023 that does 4K 60P for under $500. In fact, name any other APS-C mirrorless camera in 2023 priced under $500. I'll wait....
The lack of a touchscreen is a very big miss in 2023
It's just an M50.. with RF mount.. :)
