Growing up, every time my mother touched my hair, she informed me that I had “bad” hair. With this programmed in my mind, getting a relaxer at 12 was a no brainer. I am 50 years old now, therefore I remember the time when it was unacceptable to go to work with braids or natural hair. I know for a fact that most jobs I had would not have hired me with natural hair. This also really hurt the potential to “learn” how to manage my own hair. I didn’t get comfortable going to work with a more natural style until 2010. Let’s face the fact that systemic racism played a huge part in our lack of hair progress. If I didn’t know how to manage my natural hair I couldn’t teach it to my daughter. Fortunately I had the good sense to never relax her hair. She has beautiful hair! I’m grateful to you and channels like this. Thank you all for what you do. ❤
You are teaching the young and older how to manage our beautiful, unique hair. You are creating a world where we are changing the way we think about, treat, and love our hair! 😊🌺

@@CoilyDiaries It was difficult for me for a while, but I didn't complain. I just didn't know what the heck I was doing. Now I keep it simple like we did back in the day. The only difference is that I deep condition 1-2 times a month. I've also become a master of the tuck and roll.

@belindasanders1719 Difficult may be a strong word, but the truth is it takes time, observation of your hair and skill to finally master it. And for women with small children, especially without help from family, that is a huge challenge. Now if a mom wants to keep her hair short, then it’s a bit easier. But desiring and trying to manage length, it’s completely different, for some, though not for all. I don’t think it’s entirely about accepting one’s hair. There are other variables to consider for some.

Yes, my 4C hair is time consuming to manage. That is why I wore a teeny weeny afro from 1970 until 2023. Raising my daughter as a single mother while working and managing all the racism life in America has to offer, it was just easier, plus I refused to relax my God given hair. I knew that relaxers were not good for me. I am 75 now, and have decided to grow it in Aug/Sept 2023. So far so good. I don't know how long it will get, but I am enjoying my hair for the first time in my life I take care of it myself with the help of you and other natural hair influencers. I don't trust hair stylists, having had questionable experiences at their hands. My mother was a hair dresser back in the day and I learned that not all stylists know what they are doing. Anyhow, my hair is growing nicely. I am having to deal with thinning edges. Having never worn any artificial braids or wigs, I can only believe that it is age related. I have a dermatology appt to see what they think. Sometimes I wear a big Afro to church, but immediately put it back into braids. It works for me. Thanks for all your advice. I'll keep you posted. So far it is about 6-7 inches in length. God bless.

I agree with this comment. I don’t like the term “difficult”. If we care for it as we’re supposed to, it’s a breeze. But most of us don’t know how. Indian women have beautiful hair because of Ayurveda. We don’t hear them complaining about oiling and massaging their hair. The knowledge was passed down from generation to generation. That’s all they know.

    • @A_Wilson
      @A_Wilson 5 месяцев назад +1

@abioni6092. You have to remember that a lot of us black women just learned how to care for our natural hair as adults. The only thing that was passed down to us was how to get out the kinks, via hot combs, Jheri curls and relaxers. It would benefit us to give ourselves and each other some compassion and grace, in my opinion.

I do not think the creator is saying that natural hair is hard, even though she may use that phrase, as some are alluding to. At the core, she is saying it is more time-consuming, and you cannot do wash-and-goes with some hair textures. The current routines we have for natural hair are more time-consuming than for other textures. Some hair textures don't even require much effort, yet it looks luscious. For other textures, people don't have to learn how to manage their hair; it grows effortlessly, even for the laziest people. Yet for us, we are doing a few gymnastics and scientific equations to retain length. Then when we add all these factors and compare to other textures it is seen as "hard" even though it is not literrally hard. I think it is ok to admit that. trying to convince someone that "you is not hard to manage" is trying to convince someone to deny what they feel and see. a lot of natual 4c are really struggling.

When I first went natural, my oldest son was quite a bit older so I had time to spend trying to learn it and figure out what I could with it. My hair flourished. Years later, I had my daughter and I became a blow dried natural, trying to “speed up wash day”. It took a few years but that eventually damaged my hair and I had to cut a significant amount off. I had to lean on protective styles and scarfs to get me through initially while I nursed and grew my hair back. Now that I have another son who’s 8 months, I’m a braided natural, still in protective styles. The other part to mention is the guilt of spending a lot of time on your hair that you’d rather spend with your children. You really have to master skills and techniques to simplify and make caring for hair easier, without sacrificing the health of it. And we don’t want to neglect ourselves completely for our children, so we have to establish a balance. It can be difficult but once you do, it makes things better. Great video! I’m like you, I don’t judge what ladies do to their hair. We all have to do what works for us! 🌺

Textured hair can come in various ethnicities on each inhabited continent, including Asia. All ethnicities have individuals who may find it difficult to style and maintain their natural hair. Perming/relaxing, curling, straightening with tools, etc. to get unruly hair to behave is a human experience. Even though natural textured hair in ethnicities known to have more of a tighter kinkier curl pattern may have a more time consuming process in taking care of their hair, they're not the only ones who catch the blues about their hair texture and length. Humans worldwide have more in common than we may personally think and believe. But those who know, the struggle is real in all ethnicities no matter where they are in the world.
(I posted this because after having conversations with pale skinned American women and reading about how a few Asians who have textured natural hair deal with their everyday struggles with their hair. One woman said she hated her hair 😔)
This doesn't mean to downplay what ethnic groups from Hamitic descent have to go through from day to day with their natural straight, wavy, curly, coily, and kinky hair every day. We all just have to learn what works for us as individuals and love on our hair no matter how it grows out of our scalp. Keep it simple and don't stress over it has helped me tremendously. As well as praying to Jehovah God for help dealing with hair He blessed me with and created for me to take care of.
    (Gen 3:20;10;Psalm 83:18; John 17:3; Rev 4:11)
Didn't mean to write an essay,CC,but your topic got me thinking and wanted to express my thoughts on the matter presented in your video.

I pledged to myself to try their method (they are natural hair coaches and the salon owned by a natural hair trichologist) because it has been difficult trying to learn all I need from youtube. I am a full time working mom of 2 little kids and I barely make time for myself. You added quite a bit of nuance that I appreciate.
I agree from the perspective that truly, everything that's worth doing requires some amount of effort on your part. Also, I usually refrain from telling people that natural hair is easy because I know the work it takes to achieve a style/length goal...etc.
Where I disagree is that when you're genuinely struggling to maintain your natural hair, it can feel 10 times harder. The frustration makes you feel like you're getting nowhere. Then when you figure out what was giving you a difficult time, you kind of go...wow, now my hair is so easy to maintain/style...etc.
I think a lot more people should add nuance when making statements like 'natural hair is/ isn't difficult' because what's easy to me may be difficult for you.

You don’t have to wear freeform locks to have long highly textured hair. I’ve been wearing Sisterlocks since 1999 and it is equally easy. I retightened every couple of months and can achieve any styles worn by those in wigs, braids, and twists. (See Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson). I’m in my 60s with waist length locks and still get asked if I have extensions or wearing a wig.
It will always be difficult when those with tightly coiled hair prefer to have long straightened hair.

Our natural hair is not difficult. Anything in life that you try to do, with which you have no experience, with which you do not spend time and truly understand, will be difficult. Try riding a bicycle for the first time ever, difficult. Put that bike away for 2 weeks are more and then try it again, still difficult. To understand something, our hair included, needs our attention, practice, love and care. Only then will we understand it.
Other people with different types of hair also have their difficult moments, some from since childhood and if you listen to their plight, it is a lack of understanding of their hair. Be it that their parents or their guardian did not know how to properly care for it, therefore it was difficult. Once we understand and learn about something, everything else becomes second nature because you are armed with knowledge....like finally learning and having practiced riding a bike. Learning and practicing to do your hair will bring love and understanding of it.

@@CoilyDiaries help me o 😂 my sister. Claiming that it's easy doesn't necessarily mean that it'll automatically change the texture of the hair 🤣oh please. We just have to accept the REALITY of this hair of ours AND find ways to make it a bit easier to take care of it ☺️that's what I think.

Once you understand your hair won’t be like everyone else’s. It becomes easy. Expecting to wear your type 4 hair out and not prepare for tangles is diabolical

that’s great! for me, understanding it or accepting it does not change its nature or the requirements for its care

Yes, I accept the hsir I have, not the one that's hanging out with me 😮🥺.
But your hair is very beautiful, voluminous, African. If I was looking for advice, I'd listen to you because you have long hair and don't complain about your hair. Btw, you're talking about those type of ppl that encircle them, black women with short hair and extensions.
Lastlei, I would love to know how you cared for your hair in your😮😁 childhood.

I think it can be difficult depending on how you like to style your hair. For instance if I wanted to wear a sleek ponytail it's going to take a lot of manipulation to achieve that look. If I wanted to minimize frizz I usually have to layer a couple of products to achieve that goal and that takes time. I don't like using a lot of product in my hair. Now if didn't care about frizz then the process of styling my hair would be pretty easy. Wash, moisturize, air dry and go.

I appreciate your approach. You left out DETANGLING in that process though, which were a lot of the work is

7:34 I will tell you. It does not take the WHOLE DAY to wash your hair and I have thick long type 4 hair, it may take me like 3-4hrs and that’s including a wash & deep condition. If you all are having trouble detangling your hair I will recommend IT’S A 10 leave in conditioner, this stuff is $42 but it lasts, it’s for all hair types and it detangles hair like butter literally. I have been using that for 4+ years.

    • @CoilyDiaries
