  • Welcome back guys to another exciting, funny, and informational episode of Total Recoil.
Today our very special Gun Expert a.k.a. Paul from the Meixners is back to us for a really fun episode together with our beautiful host Israel Wright they are going to be checking out some very special guns from Metal Gear Solid V.
Is Bambetov SV the new Dragunov SVD? How far does a grenade launcher go?
Does the Water Pistol do any good?
Tune in and have some Questions answered by our beloved duo.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a stealth game in which players take the role of Punished "Venom" Snake from a third-person perspective in an open world. Gameplay elements are largely unchanged from Ground Zeroes, meaning that players must sneak from several points in the game world, avoid enemy guards, and remain undetected. Included in Snake's repertoire are binoculars, a variety of weapons, explosives, and stealth-based items such as cardboard boxes and decoys. Following one of the series traditions, The Phantom Pain encourages players to progress through the game without killing, using non-lethal weapons such as tranquilizer darts to subdue enemies. Players may traverse the game world with vehicles such as jeeps and tanks, in addition to traveling on foot or on horseback, and as certain locations are mountainous, occasionally, players can opt to go rock climbing as a shortcut. They
may call for helicopter support against enemy soldiers or request airstrikes that can bomb the target area or change the current weather.

The water gun in MGSV is used for many useful features.
    - Cheap to deploy into combat
    - Able to threaten and hold enemy soldiers up to surrender
    - Take out campfires and torches to provide more shadows for stealth
    - Destroy electronics SILENTLY., like the enemy radio so they cannot call for back up. Most alternatives are explosive and loud.
    - Viable weapon capable of destroying the Man on Fire Boss.

@@insaniam_convertunt_scientiam i tried it and it does remind me a lot of MGSV, but at least mgs series had a plot, sniper elite has zero plot or good characters, the gameplay is similar but the stealth isn't the best and it times it feels very clunky because once you crouch your sensitivity goes from 10 to 1, some people might like that but i don't, the mission prep is similar but more punishing since you need to spend your earned points to get new weapons or use silenced rounds and mines, the only redeeming quality imo are the cool map designs, weapons (not much of them but they are cool), the visuals, co-op with friends and most importantly the sniping, keep in mind I've only played Sniper Elite 4 but overall it's a cool decent game, reminds me a lot of Just Cause except instead of actions and explosions, it's stealth and sniping

The Water Pistol can be pretty useful if used right. Squirt in an enemy's face to stun him for a second, allowing you a short time to take them out. It can also be used to take out electronics relatively silently and it allows you to put out the barrel fires for more shadows! You can also use it as a distraction, just make sure the enemy isn't looking in your direction when you shoot, otherwise they will instantly spot you as if you shot a normal unsilenced gun (which is really annoying).
The G44 barrels don't offer the ranges they should unfortunately. That barrel you saw on the G44 was the standard barrel yet it only has the same range as the normal barrel of the MRS-4 Carbine, even though the normal G44 barrel is much longer.

Hardly ever used the AK, and ironically hardly ever used the tranq either, usually prefered to just knock people out and Fulton them when no one was looking. The tranq was more a "oh shit button" if I got spotted and got into reflex mode. and the AK idk, made me feel a little better if I had to actually deal with a shootout even though I'd usually just air drop smoke on my location and sprint through. The game is truly a playground isn't it?

In terms of the tranq gun and how long it takes to knock something out, it can either be very fast or very slow depending on how much you use, how big the mouse is, and where its administered. I work with research mice (obv not the same as humans, but the concept carries over i believe); with small doses in the right spot, there have been mice ive anesthetized that have been knocked out before ive even finished the whole injection. Theres also been times where its taken 2-3 injections to knock some out completely. So best case it has potential to work just like the movies, in theory.

That caseless grenade launcher is GP-25 more likely used on AK series as a underbarell launcher, but what i like in a MGSV, is the fact that they showed up less famous GP-25 "Kastet" platform, for firing like separated from a gun launcher, i think m203 had also something like this, m320 has it for sure. Whats about "caseless" GP's nature is more closer to a rocket propelled ammunition, however that rocket blast lasts less than a half of second

The caseless grenade launcher is real. It's the GP-25 which uses a single a piece to fire like a mortar does instead of a 2 piece like the m203.
The flare pistol that fires grenades is also real. WW2 Germany came up with it and it's called the Panzerwurfköper 42 (the round name but the wiki page has a good photo of it).
Another tid bit: all the guns in game are mostly combinations of real firearms. The bullpup rifle is G11 crossbreed with a little famas and some Aug.

I didn't know they already tried fiber optic active camo. Hopefully it was a case of technology not being mature enough to make it good enough. Because I'm currently making a set with a few coatings to tweak the input and output. I know I can't get perfect so I'm trying for moving transparent shadow

    • @hf117j

@John Marler Yup. In forested areas it's perfect. Anywhere with splotchy lighting really. But it needs coatings to dim it down and diffuse the light in areas with consistent direct sunlight or it turns into a wearable lighthouse. I'm waiting to try a more complex version using small optical clarity resin printed lenses on the surface, less fiber optic pathing, and adapters to let the strands cross each other to make the pathing and space management easier. That one will take enormous amounts of time to make. Every armour piece needs the pathing and all that. But if tuned correctly it SHOULD work much better than the raw fiber optic version. Tbh with hundreds if not thousands of paths to be modeled, a small handful of mistakes might not even be a bad thing in the tuning

13:48 - this is variation on soviet GP-25 underbarrel grenade launcher but standalone. Grenades for this, VOG-25 for example, is technically caseless - they have powser charge build in the rear, not pressed powder or anything like experimental G11 german rifle. This grenades in service like from 1970s.

regarding the tranq mechanics in MGS, iirc they made it so the effect is more immediate depending on how close the shot lands to your target's head. i.e if you shoot them in the foot, it'd take a good 8-12 seconds before they drop dead?(thats enough time for them to tell their squadmates something's up) subsequent shots will obviously speed up the effect.

Anaesthetics for animals are pretty complex. Lots of different kinds and rates of metabolism affect not only the amount required but also what types are even effective. My ecology professor in college had a doctorate in her field of study but was also a credentialed veterinarian that specialized in pachyderms. Animals like elephants, hippos and rhinoceros can be tranquilized but not quite fully enough to work on the ground next to them during, say, a surgery. You do surgery on those animals while laying on scaffolds hung above the animal reaching down. These platforms can and will be rapidly ascended if the animal tried to do something like rolling or kicking. A kick from even a narced pachyderm is enough to crush a human ribcage, sometimes event glancing blow can crush organs and send people flying.
So no, it's not just *thwip* and a large animal goes down. Sometimes even smaller animals like big cats won't go down, much less stay down, and they tend to thrash when darted so it can be hard to know when it's safe to hit them if someone has ended up stuck in an enclosure with one. The dart can miss, mis-strike and fail to deploy either part of or the entire dose which gives the animal even more time and reason to react dangerously. Some zoos have given up darting in dangerous situations now in favor of immediate use of lethal force because so many people have insisted on hugging tigers that it simple isn't worth increasing the risk at all anymore and seen as better to sacrifice the animal, even a critically endangered one, for a human life.

Fun fact: The US army fielded the Colt 1873 in .45 long colt at the same time as the .45 schofield and inevitably sent the wrong ammo with the wrong guns. You could shoot the schofield ammo in the 1873 normally but the wider rim on the Colt ammo meant you could only load every other chamber in the Schofield with Colt ammo. So 3 shots total with a click between each. Not ideal!

The caseless gun Paul is thinking of would be the G11. Unfortunately, a large number of factors conspired against the G11 - the mechanism looks like a damn cuckoo clock, and bits of the propellant would get shaved into said mechanism and jam it. Also, I think the propellant may have been carcinogenic. That could be a different caseless weapon, though.

The main reason we don't have this level of prosthetic is that it is super hard to convert brain signals into electronic input. That is also the reason why leg prosthetics are more advanced than hand.
