- Meet the new Nissan X-Trail e-Power!
It’s a hybrid-powered family-friend SUV, and Mat’s about to see if this 7-seat SUV has what it takes to compete with competitors such as the Skoda Kodiaq and Peugeot 5008.
When it comes to the design, it’s not exactly the most exciting but it offers enough to keep you interested. It’s pretty chunky, similar to the old model, and higher levels of trim come with some bits of shiny trim around the front, sides and rear. You also have the option to choose a two-tone roof as well.
On the inside, the cabin is largely made with good quality materials, and as long as you don’t go for the entry-level model, you have a suitably sized touch screen. Thankfully climate control functions still come with physical buttons, so they’re easy to manage and change when you’re on the go.
There are three power options available, with the top-of-the-range being a hybrid petrol, which couples a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder turbo petrol with electric motors to deliver 213hp.
The Nissan X-Trail starts from £32,000, but is it the best 7-seat SUV in this price range? Stick with Mat and find out for yourself!

Took delivery of the Tekna+ ePower e4orce last month & I’m not sure why reviewers & people in the comments are negative about the economy. I use this everyday as part of my job along with gigging as a musician most weekends not only in the Midlands but all over the UK, so I easily cover between 50-80 miles a day with a good mix of city, countryside & motorway driving & yet I consistently achieve an average 48-55mpg, regardless of what mode I’m driving in. Compared with the 2017 Vauxhall Insignia 2.0 diesel I had beforehand, which was averaging around 40-44mpg, this is definitely a step up. Sorry folks, but no complaints here.
Any reliability problem with it now? I had a test drive e4orce yesterday and like it very much😊 for you recommend it?

I took delivery last week and I get better than the advertised fuel consumption already. I say already because the dealership told me not to look at the usage figures until it hits 1000km because the battery charging slowly scales up. I use the B Pedal when driving on country roads/highways and the e pedal when driving around down. B Pedal is kind of like a more aggressive engine breaking that recharges the battery. The E Pedal is much more aggressive but once you get the hang of it you can get some really efficient city driving done.
Where it does poorly on fuel economy is on uneven roads/dirt tracks. You get around 28 mpg on those types of roads. I guess the magic doesn't work as well there.
Driving not particularly carefully and with the air con on when it is 37 degrees outside I was managing 47 mpg on highways. Supposedly this will improve. You can get 62mpg using the E Pedal around town once you get used to it. So far I haven't tried the "Eco" mode, which seems to control how fast you can accelerate and the aircon intensity. I'll give it a go at some point.
It really is a very refined car, nice interior and more engaging than most cars in its class to drive.
To be honest I'm a bit puzzled by some of these reviews with the bad fuel economy.
There are millions of people that have all their money in Tesla stock and other similar stocks, so naturally they hate any competitor.
Did I miss the bit where Matt explained why it was a game changer?
I concur, and here's Australia's John Cadogan's very colourful opinion on why it is NOT a game changer! 🤣 ruclips.net/video/qC7aZahe70o/видео.html

Not really a game changer indeed.

I think the reason this video is named “this Nissan is a game changer” is because of the way it’s engine powers the electric motor. It’s an interesting idea and probably the last of the petrol engines before we have built a better electric infrastructure. I’ve test driven this car. It’s a nice comfortable car.
Nissan is a wonderfull brand, but my personal belief is the French collaboration ruined the brand and set it back a great deal. The French almost sabotaged them. :/
It wasn't the french that stopped nissan from neing creative. It was that lebanese boss carlos ghosn. When he disappeared, Nissan came up with a slew of new models.
All Nissans are really bad
They lack Toyota reliability.
But they sell due to lower price point.
I can agree that Renault does make the worst cars
You are right
Yeah but without Carlos Ghosn, Nissan would have gone bankrupt.
They saved the brand by making bad cars.. So yeah
Whilst not having an X Trail ePower, we have just returned from a holiday in the Lake District our first long journey in our Qashqai ePower Tekna so we have some experience of the ePower drivetrain. Just over a 1000 miles of driving and lots of motorway interspersed with the very hilly area. We achieved an overall 51.3 mpg. Best on the motorway at 70 mph was 52.5 mpg. Overall mpg over our 6000 miles of ownership is 51 mpg very close to the advertised figures. For an SUV that's acceptable in our view. Having owned various hybrid cars, this is the best we have owned for our needs. The lack of those annoying CVT gearboxes is a huge bonus. The driving experience is very smooth. Sport mode provides quite impressive acceleration for a fairly large car too. In reference to Carwow savings we did initially go down that route but in the end we just haggled and got an extremely good price from our local Nissan dealership. My wife is very good at haggling and is not at all shy about pushing for the best price. The dealer also threw in a full tank of fuel, car tax and mats and boot liner. 😁 Would we recommend it? Definitely. Is the extra cost worth it? If you haggle well then yes. We got ours for the base model price without involving a third party. We don't like diesel cars and EVs are from our point of view, not value for money nor logistically practical unless you are a city dweller. Tesla's are over priced and have poor build quality and after sales back up so were never an option. Your views may differ if course. 🤔
So happy to hear your enjoying your Qashqai Epower , and sound like you got a cracking deal from your dealer. ❤
Interesting to see the differences between Europes X trail and North America’s Rogue. The Rogue features one power option with the 1.5 turbo rated at 201hp. This gives me a sneak peak on E-power which hasn’t made it to America, and last I read will be reserved for Infiniti
Wish this X Trail also rivalled the 200SX.
In Mexico we have nissan kicks with e-power, i guess they're testing waters to bring bigger cars
You know, Nissan are going to release E-Power version Rogue in China which the 1.5 turbo version has been sold by 6 months.
This powertrain design seems similar to North America’s Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. They swap out the 1.5 for their own 2.4 but it’s still used as just a generator for the electric motor. The Mitsubishi is also not very economical I’ve heard when running in hybrid mode. Very curious why this doesn’t do as well as others.
There is a qashqai (rouge sport) e power as well
Yes. I've waited for the New Nissan X-Trail review since 2021. Thank you Mat and Carwow for this iconic review. I'm impressed it did 6.39sec in the wet when the claimed time is 7sec.

QUESTION: Why do we keep getting bigger and bigger cars, when the numbers of vehicles on our roads are increasing, general access within towns is decreasing, parking spaces remain 60's compatible only and many roads are decreased in size to permit bicycle / pedestrian access only?
People are getting bigger.
Safety standards are increasing, notice how thin the doors are on an Anglia compared to any new car?

Comfort standards are increasing, takes up space.

I think the point of this E Power system is an EV drive train driving experience without the need to plug in or range anxiety. Also no whirring CVT transmission like most other hybrids which give the better fuel savings...
You did not mention the motor was a very sophisticated variable compression engine.
Summary. Game changer as EV driving experience without range anxiety or need to plug in or weight of large battery pack.
Trade off... More economical than petrol car and less economy the conventional Hybrids with CVT transmissions.
Overall... A great driving experience.
My brother has ordered a QASHQAI E Power. At present in Australia the EV charging infrastructure is very poor and a big country with most population in cities. Good option until EVs evolve with more efficient battery technology, less weight, less use of resources and lower costs, better range, better charging time.
Depreciation on early EVs may be very high as expensive to buy and as later technologies improve the first or second generation battery technology become not a great option unless cheap.
The Christmas / New Year holiday season and popularity of escape from the cities left EV owners having to wait hours in a queue at key charging stations. No option to stay in a motel and charge overnight as all fully booked.
Many of us are wondering if EV only is a good option?? A spread of technologies is far better..
We could tax cars by weight so the worst for manufacturing resource use favours light weight cars.
Aptera, Citroen Ami and Ollie as flag wavers of low resource efficiency.
My brother bought an X-Trail E Force Hybrid as the safety and sophistication of electric 4WD witl the Ti seemed better value and better availablity in Australia. X Trail made in Japan. QASHQAI in UK with very high local demand.
Loves it.
The CVT transmission from Toyota ist not the same aus classic CVT.
All European Uk governments have missed a big opportunity with petrol hybrid and plug in hybrid. They were a game changer but being killed off by the obsession for all electric only.
My brother changed to an X Trail E Force.... 4WD electric drive train and 3 cylinder petrol generator.
A serene and responsive drive.

For me this is a must buy, definitely not a "consider". When you weigh up the luxury and performance vs the price, particularly vs the very crappy looking (both inside and out) Rav 4 and more expensive outlander, this is the one to get. In top spec hybrid AWD trim. The economy is still "good enough" vs most petrol engines and you NEVER need to plug it in which means no issues for street parkers like myself. As an every day driver and long distance cruiser, this Nissan is a supremely balanced car. The only things, literally THE only things I could fault it on were non adaptive cup holders/crappy rear armrest, and lack of ventilated seats. That's it. It ticks every other box as a comfort car that has decent spirited acceleration when needed. I mean the top spec hybrid is the same price as the flagship CX-5 turbo here but has a much nicer interior and goes harder and is definitely more economical. In fact, IMO, the top spec TI-L with the lighter quilted leather option (and red outside, yum) looks like a much more expensive German car interior. I could imagine doing all my LONG "around Australia" drives in this, but the waiting list is already crazy for the TI-L hybrid AWD and I couldn't get one anytime soon, so I settled on an MG HS AWD - for now. I got a truly ridiculous deal on a brand spanking new 2022 model with metallic paint, for many thousands less than people are selling demos and used ones for - in basic white no less. From deal negotiation to delivery in my hands was all of 3 days total and I needed a car immediately, and I gotta tell you, for the price, it's been an amazing little thing and wonderful to drive interstate with with excellent lane keeping and adaptive cruise tech.
Ridiculous. I’d love to see a 10 year old one of these vs a 10 year old RAV 4 hybrid. Also the fuel efficiency on this is about 20mpg worse than a rav4 with awd.

@alileevil well, we're comparing to a normal combustion ingine, so in both cases, there should be a full tank! It's only interesting to see how efficient this new approach is!
I still have the first gen X-Trail from 2004. Really practical car and powerful enough with its 2.5L NA engine. It still has the conventional AT transmission instead of the newer CVT's so that's also a plus. Looks decent too with its boxy design, before Nissan went all bland from 2010 onwards. This new one is coming back to its roots, liking it so far, but not the CVT.
it's also a shame that they decided to end assembly of Nissan vehicles in my country due to major cost cutting policies enacted in 2020. If this X-Trail eventually gets to my shores from Japan, then it will certainly be more expensive thanks to import taxes. It will have to compete with cheaper, locally assembled direct competitors like the Honda CR-V and Toyota Fortuner. They still sell the T32 facelift X-Trail in my country today, but nobody's really buying it since it's more expensive than the competition.
I remember my parents own 1, 1st gen X-Trail, I just wished the 4x4 would be massively available in asia but its not...
Lots of shiny bits....impressive.
Does it have the variable compression engine??? You guys are very particular abiu the the gimmicks, but sot very specific about the the technical details about the vehicle. But your opinions are still useful. Nice vid.
BMW i3 Rex (Range extender) did the same thing. But due to idiotic London mayor most ppl in central London had to give them up due to congestion charge. This is the best option for electric cars having a generator charging the battery. This gives no range anxiety.
In the US the Xtrail (Rogue) competes with the CR-V, Rav 4, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, etc., while they are comparing this vehicle to the Sorento in Europe. Interesting to see how the brands positioned their vehicles depending on the market.
I think it's being compared to other 7 seat cars. The Sportage, Tucson, etc are only available with 5 seats here

Now recently i drove the HR-V hybrid which comes with a 1.5 litre petrol to generate the power to the electric drive motor that actually drives the front wheels, it only had about 130BHP and i found it really noisy when accelerating up a motorway slip road or accelerating to overtake. Now if the x-trail isnt as quiet that doesnt sound good, bearing in mind the x-trail you're getting about 70BHP more output, (so about 200BHP), which is more than the civic hybrid which has a 2.0 litre engine and 184BHP, which i also drove, but found to be alot quieter. (despite the artificial rev sounds coming through the speakers).
I have the original e power model from Japan. The Nissan Note e power. It's a brilliant car and you are right the newer e power models creep but don't stop in eco mode. My car stops which is great. It's a pity the Note e power didn't make it to Europe as it would have been a hit. My car does 0-100 km in 6 secs the nismo version does it in 4.5 secs. Only issue is the petrol motor is louder than the newer models. My economy for a 6 year old hybrid I get really 850kn from a full tank. Highest I ever got was 980km. I just wished Nissan sorted the economy out though for the xtrail.
Just lie a little less. It never goes to 100 in 4.5 second. Nismo S can goes to 100kmh under 7 seconds. And normal one does it at 7.5 seconds. Car is good in economy in city but at 120kmh(70mph) the economy of note is just like a normal petrol car. Dont over estimate it. I have also one Japanese model. Plus there are other issues of ac triping in summer as well.
ın this video, back seats and boot section names should be cardio
Back seats doesnt count.
Hello Matt , can you do review of FAW-Bestune t33 1.2l turbo please
Looks ok, bit of a nod to the old T31 especially with the C pillar but If I was spending that much and only seeing 34mpg from a hybrid I wouldn't be happy.
A Gamechanger for Nissan would be quality and longevity.
B graded car.
Things nissan isn't known for
@Purwanti Allan you mean it's a F it is a nissan it won't last past its warranty period

Looking for a decent 7 seater, any recommendations between this Nissan, the VW Tiguan Allspace or the Skoda Kodiaq..? (Skoda is bigger which is good but in my budget the Skoda and VW are 2 wheel drive only)
Love your reviews but hate the fact that you don't share the best engine/trim level unless we go to your website and go through all the faff, that's why I tend to watch competitor reviews.
Well I LIKE IT, so that is all ANYBODY needs to know!
Seriously though, I do like the styling. Interior is a bit bland however. But it seems to have enough power in the 4x4 variant, even though the BHP isn't fantastic for such a big car.
It does seem like a practical car too, with plenty storage cubbies, and a nice flat load floor for transporting large items.
If somebody gifts me the money, I will buy one, and do a green lane video review.
I would be very interested in replacing my 2016 discovery with this car!! But 34 mpg and a 45k price tag for the 4 wheel drive has stopped me.
From a range rover to this... why?
@@VMAdventures88 reliability?
@@ALMX5DP OK, but if he is used to luxury vehicles, there are reliable luxury vehicles as well.
Repeatedly going from 0-60 probably resulted in that 34 mpg figure. Notice that it also took over 2 hours to do just 37.5 miles!
@@VMAdventures88 maybe they’ve figured “luxury” is overrated?
I just wonder how long the battery is going to last for if the engine is charging it nonstop
Can you review a defender 130😊
I'd choose the x trail instead of the rav4 hybrid. Nice hybrid suv
Happy new year 2023, Carboy. From Purwanti Allan. Sorry for a little late.
Can you pls say why you prefer x trail against to rav4 ?
@@peterkocan7952 It's much better looking car but the fuel economy is a bit disappointing
@@carboy617 i took a test drive at the end of 2022. i was impressed. I didn't feel so comfortable in the back seats.
I was interested in your comment that you prefer the new x trial more than the RAV4. I have ordered a rav4 and it should arrive in May. but after this drive, I'm not sure if the RAV4 will be the right choice. from the point of view of driving economy, the RAV4 is definitely more economical. the driving dynamics of the RAV4 hybrid are also not bad. but in comparison with the quality and the luxurious interior, the xtrail is better. so I'm in doubt
Is Mat calling it the X-Trial? I thought it was X-Trail 😆
Mat DEFINITELY called it X-Trial. I also thought he say X-Games.
I like it. love the looks of it. well done
Never mind that the Honda Jazz/Fit you reviewed 6 months ago had a similar way of being an EV with petrol generator...
Since it's already full EV drive with a powerful EV motor, seems like it would be easy to add a bigger battery and turn this one into a PHEV.
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV seems to use this design, though opting for their own 2.4 engine to use as a generator.
This is a hybrid
@@octopoops8527 I'm Aware. But it's different than conventional hybrids that just have a weak Assist EV motor. This has a powerful EV motor that is the only connection to the wheels, so it relatively easier to upgrade this to a decent Plug in Hybrid. It just needs a bigger battery and a some charging circuitry.
@@ALMX5DP Wrong , the outlander petrol engine also drives the wheels, with this petrol car the engine is just a generator ....
How on earth did they manage to get so little leg room and space out of such a large car lol
Hybrid system
Hybrids are pathetic machines
@@Undisputed_King you might think so but they give a cars way better acceleration without burning as much gas to do it. Plus in countries where the size of the engine determines taxes and insurance brackets, a smaller petrol engine is welcome
@@BrentB88 maybe mild hybrids but other hybrids are slow to accelerate. Electric cars are way better but they haven't reached their potential yet in terms of optimization, customization, appearance and range and efficiency.
@@Undisputed_King exactly. Lots of places around the globe don't have the proper infrastructure yet! So depending on the hybrid, I'm all for the e power and Honda's solution that is similar. So you can choose more range or more instant power.
My mom bought one in Australia and while we were there, I got a chance to live with it for 2 weeks. Great car overall but I won’t buy it as the rear seat belt buckles stick out quite a bit. My wife sitting in the back need to put a blanket to stop it.
Believe the comparison of x-trail with the hyundai should be with the Tuscon..
Also, could you please review the new Nissan Pathfinder.. that would be the competitor for Hyundai Sante Fe
Tuscan is only available with 5 seats hence the Santa Fe comparison. Also the Pathfinder has been unavailable in Europe for about the last 10 years, no idea why they stopped it but we only got one generation of Pathfinder
I think that Nissan made a smart move to let electric motors to run the wheels. They have instant torque and are more smooth than any petrol+automatic transmission setup. And i think it's better for the petrol to run in steady rpm range
I have serious concerns about the long term reliability of this system.
