Came here from that one Tweet about this bird landing on someone's girlfriend's head. It looked pretty scary, some people even jokingly called it an omen of death...the drumming bit is fascinating! I hope they are effectively conserved..it will be very sad to lose such intelligent, beautiful and ecosystem-serving beings.
Are "gifts" not tools? male Dolphins actually will actually select specific seaweed garlands or sponges among other things, to present to females as a seductive gift. Dolphins have been know to bring such "gifts" to human areas where they have been fed. I guess cats/dogs bring owners gifts but have been domesticated for millenia. Corvids / crows, will bring people trinkets of thanks who have fed or befriended them.
Penguins give gifts of stones also. Very cool. Tools are something an animal repurposes to do another task. For instance, primates will sharpen rocks to open clams. However, whittling a tool for the mating ritual is quite unique in the animal kingdom. Interesting birds indeed!

The australian government doesn't care about any animals, if they did there'd put more of an effort to eradicate feral and invasive species from Australia. The first thing ppl need to do is get the young to love and understand these birds

We actually succeeded in doing so in Nov. 2021. They're now officially listed as Endangered.
