The momma was protecting her children and that’s all. No stalking. If she was stalking he would have never seen her coming.

@@hindsightpov4218 I’m not questioning it is scary; that was not the point. Of course it is scary.
But by the way, he was filming evrerything the whole time. That is very poor judgement and natural instincts. The only good thing he did was not running away. The rest is pure luck. Instead of trying to think how to defend himself in case of an attack like throwing rocks or picking up a stick, the guy was just filming and was actually talking to the cougar as if he could reason with the cougar. How stupid is that?
It goes to show us that most people believe they can get away with anything just by talking their way out which is crazy. I guess he was also under the impression that the cougar will feel intimidated by him filming it, maybe he’d show the movie to the police and the police would fine the cougar...

He said in the video he was already filming the cubs before he saw their mother. He said he continued recording because he wanted documented video evidence if anything happened to him. I would do the same.
He obviously didn’t want to hurt the mother cougar. He said he first tried yelling and trying to make himself look as big as possible to discourage the cougar from coming any closer. It wasn’t working so he threw the rock as a last resort. It was a risk he took that he had no certainty would work. For all he knew, throwing the rock could have agitated the mother cougar enough to attack him. Fortunately it worked and no one was hurt.

I've heard a cougar expert say that an aggressive cougar that could attack, may show any (or all) of these behaviours:
    1) The cougar is charging towards you at Mach 4!!! Eek!
    2) The cougar is circling you, making smaller circles to close the space between you and it.
    3) Fixed gaze, shows the full side of the bodies, tail flicking, ears back, growling.
Good thing he did everything right and survived since Mamma cougar showed first-hand a couple of these behaviours.

Ellen G Yes. There's an additional element here: there are at least two instances where the mother cougar turns her head as if she's checking back on her cubs. In other words, her attention is divided, and she likely doesn't want to chase this intruder any longer than she has to. She's not predating or hunting him, she's trying to chase him off.

Tactical thinking should make one aware of a possible ambush in spite of the cougars sudden 5:40 departure. Some time ago I was stalked for a similarly lengthy period of time only to have the cougar make a retreat. Much as the man in this video, I experienced a grand feeling of relief upon her rapid withdrawal. Only to soon find her lounging against my car in the parking lot. Oh the horror! Why 5.30 mins to hurl the rock at the cougar ? Can be analysed this way. In such a life-threatening situation your brain is occupied with so many thoughts, that may be the most critical ones don't strike you. Also bending down puts you in a negative prey situation, which big cats exploit with lightning speed. Don't underestimate the reach of big cats. Glad that at least at the 5.30 min when the cougar was also tired of pursuing him and the thought of her cubs must have been playing on her mind, he picked up the rock and hurled at her and she dashed back to her babies, which appears to be a life saving decision.

She may be about a 100 lbs., However, think of how much a 10 lb domestic cat could hurt you, now scale it up. When standing on their back legs there as tall as a human

He did have to go back that same way though. The cougar was chasing him up the mountain and further away from the trailhead. He said he picked up a rock and a stick, ran into some hikers who had just come from that way and they didn't see the cougar so he felt safer, but he waited a half hour or so before going back down.

Mother was not hunting and/or stalking. If she was, this man would have been killed when he turned his back to the path for vlog time. As our rangers in my county and Yellowstone always say, "If you think the 'lion is gone, it isn't" - in cases without young where the mountain lion is likely hunting.
Make sure you never bend down in such an encounter and do not turn your back to trigger any facets of prey response in the animal.
