At 90lb this was a young cat , more than likely more aggressive over newly acquired territory and possibly had never seen humans before, to him they were just intruders on his “area”.
@@stephaniewalsh67 No doubt. Cali is my best friend in the world. I am not sure of her age, but she is most likely about 15. She used to be wild and feral. She is in great physical health and sweet as can be.
90 pounds, holy Jesus... You might think that's small at first but when you have a firm understanding of cat fast muscle twitch fiber strength and speed, the 4 inch teeth and claws are just like knives. Too bad they didn't have pepper spray or a pistol.
Was thinking this same thing how it’s crazy a 90 lb canine is easy to stop for an adult male with maybe only moderate injuries, their mouth is all they have as a real weapon where cats have deadly claws and are far faster and all like you say. A 90 lb cat is a killing machine
I had my own cougar encounter 2 years ago while gold panning on a creek on Vancouver island. I was lucky enough that I saw them ( there was 2 together) before they saw me. One was an older one with the black markings on the face, the other was a young one with no black on the face. I was panning on the creek behind a big boulder that partially shielded me from their sight. they came out on a fallen tree that went out over the creek and were looking around up and down the creek. I just froze in place since by bear spray was over 20 meters away in my pack and did not think I could get to it before they could get to me. Luckily there was a branch on the fallen tree they were on that partially blocked their view of my position and I was down wind of them as well. My only thought was to stay still as I know cats react to movement more than anything else. I am also glad I did not have my dog with me that day or things could have turned out very badly. The older one did look my way eventually but could not get a clear view because of the tree branch but did a head-bob trying to get a clearer view of me. They did eventually move on but I stayed frozen in place for another 5 minutes just in case. ALWAYS carry bear spray!!!
Bear spray? Are you trying to get people killed? You carry a gun ya dork. Ever hear a story where a guy was mauled after spraying a bear with bear spray? Yeah. Nuff said.
They had already smelled you bro, their scent is 30x what ours is. They were just not interested. They don't need to see you to know you were there, that's why he looked over, to make sure the source of the smell wasn't a threat. And if it was the older Lion looking your way, it's likely he had encountered humans before and knows the smell already.
If you believe you are safe with bear spray when a mountain lion attacks. You're already dead. Mountain lions are ambush predators. You will never see it coming
@@Theearthyexplorateur He either made that story up or is just stupid, yeah the cats already knew about him, same thing with bears, they don't just appear from no where, they can definitely smell and follow from a long ways off.

Terrible tragedy for the family, but those boys did their best....one saved the survivor. Just surprised they didn't at least have a hunting knife, let alone a pistol on them. Also, shocked the first group of cops wouldn't kill it on site considering it was over the body.
If there was any chance he was still alive they wouldn't want to miss or have the bullet go through the lion and hit the guy. At that point they probably weren't 100% if he was alive or dead. Last thing they want is to accidentally shoot him.
@wyomarine6341you are right...its hard to understand why God lets these things happen...but we must always remember that He knows what is best and will always do good...no matter how it looks ...He knows the future and he can bring peace into our hearts trusting our loved ones are with Him 'if they are truly saved' and are His children. I saw a mountain lion on the road to Mammoth Pool. It was every bit 12ft. from head to tail and it's head was as big as a beach ball. I was amazed at how big it's head was. They don't call them lions for nothing. There are enormous ones out there but you'll hardly ever see them....Until it's too late
I saw one on Cuesta Ridge, CA, north east of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. This was in the 80s. I was driving, a bit after sun down and the ML was crossing the road in front of me, broadside. Head to tail, that thing occupied the entire width of the one-lane road. I suppose it was living on the prolific range cattle that roam those hills. Anyhow I couldn't help thinking an unarmed man would have no chance in hell against such an animal. Then I thought about how we would go traipsing through the nearby hills of camp San Luis Obispo all night in pitch dark as ROTC cadets, learning dismounted patrolling, laying down quietly in the brush, and so forth.
A friend of mine and me were planting crops along a stream under the tree line cover in east San Diego county 14 years ago. A Cougar crept up on us as dusk hit. After it was dark, we could hear it using the sound-cover of wind blowing leaves to creep around; they're smart AF! After firing our shotgun at the direction of it several times, it still wouldn't leave and persisted us! We carefully hiked out of the treeline cover of the creek, and after we got to the clearing, it stopped following us. They're 100% fierce! I checked his tracks the next day and scouted him jumping down from a tree. Must've been an easy, 200+ lbs male. They're fearless, and no bullsh!t!!
This what happens when mt lions are no longer allowed to be hunted. They are overpopulated and the deer and elk are nearly gone. They are literally pulling people's pets over backyard fences for food. Just a matter of time before children are being eaten.
Ive been within 20ft of a mountain lion staring me down in the wood in WA. He was big and muscular too, well fed I imagine. It didn’t charge me but did walk toward me and i kept backing up till a corner in the trail where I sprinted to my car that was like half a mile away. I know your not supposed to run, but damn let’s just say it was the most intense moment of my life, and im lucky not to be a pile of bloody bones now
Same thing nearly happened to my older brother, he was armed though, and blew that thing away. Never go alone (even with a friend or family) without being armed. Nature will win. They have in this case. RIP
90lbs? Thats as big as my brothers malamute and he’s a huge dog. I couldn’t imagine fighting an animal of that size with my bare hands especially one with more agility and larger/sharper claws than a dog. That takes courage. Rest easy, sir🕊️🙏
We have wasps in the Uk, they sting a bit, but you get over it! Walking, mountain biking, camping, and especially living etc etc in an area where, bears , wolves and big cats roam is pretty much beyond the wildest dreams of most British and European people! The closest we get to such animals is in a Zoo!
It’s crazy because apparently in the west you aren’t allowed to hunt wild mountains etc which would probably be beneficial to the environment if controlled. The west is wild
If they both had combat knives and knew how to use them that cougar would have been shanked to death in 30 seconds. Unfortunately most people don’t have the grit or skill to do that.
I was convinced about that 30 years ago by an article in Field and Stream, where a Canadian mother fought a cougar bare-handed for two hours, so her children could escape. When help came, she was still fighting. Once she knew her children were safe, she died. If she'd had even a Mora knife, I think she could have killed the cat in 2 hours of work. Unfortunately, California isn't much more friendly to knives than to pistols.
I raised a Mountain Lion from a 6-week. cub. Mine got to 100 lbs as he was well-fed. Powerful animals. Big cats have an amazing ability to sense fear. I imagine its because I lived with my cat actually in my home, I've lost the fear of them. I've been around a few known to attack, but have never had a problem. But I've had visitors over that upset my cat the moment they walked in the room. I have no idea what makes big cats stalk some humans but not others. Something is triggered in the cat and they go into "prey stalk" mode with much confidence. I'm no expert by any means. though. Condolences to this family. Very tragic. I still would never go into the wild without a weapon.
I think that you are correct about giving off a scent of fear that upsets them. Dogs can sense the same too. Recently I watched a video of a news reporter out in the wilderness on a trail doing a story unrelated to mountain lions when one casually walked right by her. She saw it at the last minute but didn’t react to it so she had no sense of fear for it. It just kept going along. I do think the cameraman had a little anxiety about seeing it walk by her.
@randyboisa6367 it was the 80s. What can I say. You on X? I'll send you pics. I was fucking handsome back then too! Your life so boring you can't wrap your head around it...hehehe.

A friend and I hiked near clear lake before and was stalked by a pretty big coyote. Stalked us for about 2 miles. It was not even scared of us as we would fake charge it as well and it would just look at us and stare. We didn't know if it was going to become aggressive but we sure weren't willing to find out. We kept a distance at around 100 yards but it was sketchy just stalking us like a cat. We threw rocks at it and he didnt budge. As we got to a angle where wind direction was blowing back towards the coyote, I let off a puff of my bear spray and it took off immediately. You just never know with wild life
Hi fam! Coyotes singing on Cow Mtn in the early am lately. Scary af story! Smart move with the bear spray! This is an instance where the regular spray worked better than the gel!

Out of the 32 years I have been hunting I have been tracked by a mountain lion at least twice, and never saw it, only it's tracks over the top of my tracks.
*For those that are spreading misinformation* This was in El Dorado County where it is easy to acquire a CCW. Let’s not jump to conclusions and discourage other people from California by making them think they can’t get a permit
Thanks for being the one person to mention this. To add to your point, this happened on National Forest land where a state CCW is generally accepted outside campgrounds.
But other than ccw, why not to belt a bowie or a toothpick? As Italian I believed that anyone has one in USA. In my alone hiking, in stray dogs areas, I had always a tall and thick staff and a knife. I did rotate between a Buck 120, a nine inch spanish bowie, a CS tanto, and our places are a lot less dangerous than yours.
I don’t understand killing the mountain lion, I mean a wild animal is going to do wild animal things especially when we’re on their land. Your pretty much entering their home at your own risk.
I feel horrible for Taylen and his family, but was killing the mountain lion after he already ran away really necessary? I know they said they killed him to protect future hikers but technically us humans are in their territory when in the wilderness.
Yeah I have 879 wooded acres most of the time I'm in a Polaris Ranger Northstar but never go out on the land without my Glock 20. Big cats and Bear are abundant out on my land and thankfully the Polaris will normally scare them off so I've never had to use it on wildlife. That said if you are walking and sneak up on a cat or a bear they will attack you 9 times out of 10...
I got stalked by one at night on my bike in G.P. Alberta. I was on a path using my phone to see. It was pitch black. I saw it briefly and heard it growling. Was difficult to peddle fast on a windy path. Forth scariest moment of my life.

Because they are in California, and didn't want to get into any trouble with the 'law'. Cougars are protected there. You can't just shoot them until AFTER they have caused harm. And even then the average person has to apply for and pay for a special permit.
@@shondrawhite9317 I know right? It is a terrible shame what happened there. Sometimes life deals out some very harsh lessons. The best we can do is learn something from them. Bear spray is always a good idea to have to deal with wild animal encounters and bad human animal encounters.
Unfucking believable! This is like the Laken Riley case in Athens Georgia. If she had pepper spray with her she would probably be alive today. Why weren't these boys armed? You're liable to run into anything out there from a mountain lion to a murder. People are so damn naïve. One more lesson of how we are our own first responders and must be an active participant in our own rescue. But to do that you must have the proper tools with you for protection and medical.
pepper spray does not stop a wild animal from killing you. If it wants to kill you, you´re dead. Jus like all of the comments saying that´s why i always carry when i go hiking, guaranteed none of these people go hiking, because shooting a moving wild animal that is running at you and on top of you in 2 seconds is something most people cannot do. Those commenting on youtube about always carrying firearm wouldn´t be wasting their time making these comments if they were capable of hitting a beer can on a log that is 1 foot away. .
@@AADVENT in some states I think it's illegal to carry bear spray in public as a tool to use against humans. They are different products made up of different compounds and are not interchangeable. Laken Riley wasn't "out in the woods", she was running a park path. My point was never be out of your home without your self defense tools. These boys should have had sidearms with them.
@@CounterLink a rifle won't do you much good at all against a bear... most bear encounters happen at a very close distance with very little time to react. This is exactly why drilling with spray is so important. The most dangerous encounters happen FAST when human and bear both surprise each other. Unless you plan to carry your rifle in a ready position as you're hiking, that rifle isn't going to do shit when you round a bend and cross paths with a bear at spray distance. Hell, I would argue that if your safety is your top priority, bear spray alone will be drastically more protection than a rifle.
Even having a knife on you would give you the edge on a mountain lion. Trying to fight it without a weapon you lose.. that sucks that would be a horrible way to die.
Last I checked two wrongs don't make one right. Those kids were in the mountain lions territory. I guarantee that animal was only defending itself and its territory to the invaders. The kids were in the wrong place at the wrong time. So killing the Lion is how to justify the situation. I think not, sorry for the lose. But murdering an innocent animal in its own environment is just not right.
I was stalked by a big cat once when I was 20 yrs old. Some people don’t believe there are mountain lions in Appalachia Va but there are. I lived in Big Stone Gap, Appalachia, Wise Va area. My son’s dad worked in those coal mines 20 years ago so I moved there with him. We had a toxic relationship. One night, I got out of the car on Black Mountain(highest point in Ky and maybe Va too) to walk because I was mad. He drove off. It was very dark on the top of that mountain. Idk about now but back then, there weren’t street lights on Black Mountain. Only the moon and stars allowed me to somewhat see, once my eyes had adjusted. I sensed(or maybe I heard)something behind me as I walked and every time I turned around, I could just barely make out the silhouette of a large cat hunkered down. It would hunker each time I turned around. There were also moments I could see a flash of its eyes glowing back at me. I was young and dumb and was hoping my eyes were playing tricks on me. I was scared but not as scared as I should’ve been. My ex drove back up the mountain to get me and I clearly heard the cat pounce off back into the woods surrounding us. I was out there 15-20 mns walking and believe the cat came upon me later into my walk. If it had more time to check me out, I think I could’ve been its midnight snack. I think back to that night occasionally and realize how lucky I probably was. A year or two later, my ex was at one of the mine sites sitting in his truck. He snapped a pic, with one of those disposable cameras, of a large mountain lion standing on top of a pile of lumber(it may have been rock or coal but a pile of something)and it was big! I can see how easy it is for them to kill unsuspecting humans. I’d never go into those types of environments now without a gun.
People should not go into the woods without a firearm ever. Just having one pistol would probably have saved this young man. So sad.

12ft? Nope.
A big beach ball? Or a small one?

The closest we get to such animals is in a Zoo!
I’m from Alaska…I wouldn’t trade the Wild for the world. I’ve got wolves on my property. Bear…Wild…..everywhere you turn.
Europe killed off all the local big fauna, that's just sad
It’s crazy because apparently in the west you aren’t allowed to hunt wild mountains etc which would probably be beneficial to the environment if controlled. The west is wild
Saw many bear in my day in Canada, only one mountain lion though. You never see them they just see you
Not in eastern europe
Always carry a knife, still may not save you but at least you have a fighting chance.
Flying knives from China will kill the lion from a distance
It's California, unless it is meant to be inserted rectally it's probably illegal.

You won't believe how many people go into the woods and come back just fine. You're sheltered

You just never know with wild life

pepper spray does not stop a wild animal from killing you. If it wants to kill you, you´re dead. Jus like all of the comments saying that´s why i always carry when i go hiking, guaranteed none of these people go hiking, because shooting a moving wild animal that is running at you and on top of you in 2 seconds is something most people cannot do.
