@@alantaylor6691 Yes! She was actually around 90 lbs when we got her. I think she's probably at the same weight or maybe around 100-110. Males average 120 to 220 and females average 64 to 140. I've seen smaller than her so that's why I think she's in the 90 to 110 range (we don't weigh her regularly, we'd only do so if there was a medical need). She's awesome! Thank God you are okay Kyle. I had no clue those cougars flapped their front legs like that. That is horrifying. You did the right thing by keeping direct eye contact and slowly backing up. My gosh. I am so glad you are okay!!!
That straight up looked like something out of a thriller/terror movie with a CGI cat or scary game - where the animal movement is like that only because it came out of someone’s amazing imagination. It doesn’t look anything natural like what we have seen cats do. It just looks so foreign to see a 4 legged mammal move like that!
@@graphicism Coaxed??? He was terrified, but did the correct thing by walking away backwards, never turning his back on the cougar, and trying to keep shouting. He did say in another interview, that when he tried to pick up rocks that's when she would charge him. Finally, he found the best moment to pick up a rock and throw it. He did the correct things, and NEVER "COAXED IT". That's pretty stupid.
@@joegarza49 Hey lucky for us he kept that camera steady rather than picking up a rock or using two-hands to break off a branch. Hissing at at animal and cowering away, while keeping a steady-hand, is most certainly not what you should do in this situation. All you have to do is kick dirt or throw a rock at an animal and it will run away. Go outside more.
That's insane bro. So glad it worked out for you, the cat, and her cubs. If you had let fear take over and you turned to run, this would definitely have been a different story. Thank you for giving everyone some idea of what to do in a situation like this.
I grew up right in this area, and saw a mom with three nearly full grown cubs standing about 15 feet in front of me a few years ago. They are very dense in this part of utah. My favorite animal, but unbelievably scary ones! One thing people usually don’t know until they see one in real life is that they are massive, a true big cat.
@@nofurtherwest3474 I’m only seeing this now because I came back to rewatch this video… My point at the time was that even if this took place at night, a flashlight still wouldn’t have bothered the cat. That is because cats have excellent night vision so a flashlight directed at them isn’t going to temporarily blind them like it would for us humans. Regardless, this took place during the day, and a phone’s flashlight wouldn’t even remotely phase her.
This was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen!!! So glad you’re safe but couldn’t help but laugh due to the commentary !!! You did an excellent job... staying as calm as you were able to saved your life !!! Don’t know how you did it !!!!! ✌️💯💙
Everybody's always all, "he shoulda this or that..." But you have no idea how you'll react in such a situation. Even the "experts" had their IDK 1st time. It's so scary hearing the exhaustion from fear in his voice.
I would have just ran away and of course the cougar would have chased me and caught me and feed me to her cubs🙃 I don’t know if I could have handled the situation like Kyle did!
Such a wild experience! Glad he made it out okay and very cool of you to sit down and ask these questions with Kyle! Thanks for sharing! The perfect gift!!
I live in Washington state and we're no strangers to panthers/ cougars/ pumas and whatever else you want to call them, as well as bears and many other predatory animals. About two years ago, I had the pleasure of getting out of my car around dawn to go walking and seen three cougars, who were walking about 35 - 40 ft away from me. Thankfully, they could care less about my presence because I can't even begin to imagine those 🐾🐾 kicking up dirt and leaping towards me at full force, in a superhero-like manner😱 ! You are one brave individual! Thanks Kyle, for sharing this educational yet harrowing experience.
Here in Finland biggest cat we have is lynx, and one spooked the heck out of me. I was in winter evening getting some firewood. The wood storage is quite away from house, and cos it was middle of winter it was already pitch black because clowdy sky too. I had cheapo head lamp on, and the battery was getting low as i got out of storage building i turned it on. Cos the lamp was so dim i got just tiny beam, and instantly i just saw these glowing eyes just staring at me just away from reach of my beam, but extremely close to me. I am not scared of lynxes cos i see them quite often, and i have never heard one to attack human, but just for that split second seen the eyes. As soon as i realized what it was i just continued to pull my wood load through the snow, and saw tje eyes dissappear, but almost instantly reapper further away. It was crazy how my little beam still shined in its eyes even though visually light wasnt anywhere near it. They are actually kinda useful around the farm because we have hare problem, and we been lucky they have not killed any of our domestic animals. I guess cos of dogs they stay out of the very close to where our animals are, but in backyard there were often lynx tracks on top of greenhouse, and around the yard as they had chased bunnies from garden. If we would have cougars i would have been scared shitless
Man, such a crazy encounter, and I live in Salt Lake. Obviously she was protecting her cubs, but I don't doubt that if she could have added you to the lunch menu for her cubs, she would have done it. Matter of fact, I was told by a hunter that once they "size" you up and believe they can take you down, they will certainly stalk you until they do, or it changes it's mind. Thankfully, this ended on a happy note.
I just came across one on Red mountain trailhead...I was in about 10 to 15 yards of me as it crossed the trail. Not sure if it saw me. Trailhead is north of St. George. Scary!
The video is a good example to keep in mind for parents not allowing their young children to fall too far behind or too far ahead on a wilderness trail; beyond the line of sight & interaction. Includes pets too...
Technically she was stalking you...if she attacked you probably wouldn't be here...I've had many many cougar encounters over the past 30 years. You pretty much did everything right !
Except for what likely triggered the entire interaction, or at least was a major factor. He was walking towards the cubs (which weren't far away from him to begin with) when the mama lion came around the corner. One cub was even running away from him. Whether he thought it was a bobcat or a mountain lion cub, he should not have approached them, and as close as he was he should have been slowly backing away from the start. That was not smart.
@@kennyhouser3467 Yeah. I think stalking more as the cougar is in hunting mode sneaking to you. This was basicly cougar forcing him away from cubs. Predators tend to be extremely careful, and they want the element of surprise or your back not fair fight. People in somewhere in india wears masks with painted face on them on back of their heads where tiger attacks are common because tigers are way less likely to charge something they think is facing them while hunting. Obviously if the cougar would have felt him as bad enough threat she would have charged, and torn him to shreads, but its also just nervous for fight thats why you should make yourself as big as possible raising hands all that. Doing that human just looks visually larger to it, and more dangerous fight.
I was like, why didn't he get a rock....but after the explanation, I get it. Still, bravo for keeping his cool.....Still should have grabbed a rock! No animals were harmed in the making of this video.
Grabbing a rock caused the cougar to push up further and pounce a couple of times, he had to gain enough distance to both pick up a rock and throw it at the cougar.
I praise God that Kyle was not harmed. Being ambushed by a mountain lion is a major concern while I'm out hiking, especially during a night hike. We may think we're rough and tumble, but we really don't know how we would respond until it happens. God forbid.
9:00 his not tripping while having to keep his eyes on that cougar is amazing. A terrifying and macabre thought, but this video could have easily ended very differently, “oh shoot don’t trip, OH CRAP”. Thank you for keeping your cool and your footing, I absolutely prefer your coming out of there saying “yeah that just happened” over any other possible ending.
I want to thank you for not killing her. So many are killed, we forget we are going into their home. Thank you. You had a scary but so AWESOME experience very few ever get to have. You looked her in the eye and all of you survived. Thank you for sharing

Seriously, Kyle did everything that I have ever learned about "what you need to do if you have an encounter with a cougar". When I first saw this, I thought "oh this is terrifying"! Indeed it is. He did such a great job of staying as calm as possible, making himself loud/large and backing away. It would be so hard not to run and slowly back away. I have rewatched this several times. Before watching this video I noticed that it seemed like a few times Kyle was trying to bend down to pick up a rock. The scary kitty cat was not going to let that happen. (I honestly think that she may have made me piddle a little bit)! 🤣I'm so glad that Kyle is okay.
The one very important mistake he made, one which could have prevented the entire situation, is that he approached lion cubs. You NEVER approach mountain lion or bear cubs. His excuse was that he thought they were bobcats. Well if you're not expert enough to tell the difference, then he shouldn't have approached bobcat of mountain lion cubs. He was very close to them from the beginning, no more than 20 feet, and if anything he should have been slowly backing away. That was really not a smart thing to do, and could very well have been the primary factor that provoked the mama mountain lion to go into protection mode.
@@DirtFlyer Indeed. When I was a kid in elementary school and middle school, I used to go to an island off of the shore of Southern California every summer for 11 days for Girl Scout camp. Many decades ago buffaloes were brought to this island to film a movie, and then they were left there for some strange reason. They ended up prospering! It was ALWAYS drilled into us every single summer as soon as we got to camp that the biggest mistake we could ever make on that island would be to get anywhere near a baby buffalo. It was already given that we were to keep our distance from adult buffaloes, but the counselors wanted to make sure we understood that even though the babies look like they would be harmless at their young age, their mother is absolutely NOT harmless and would have no problem whatsoever attacking us if we get anywhere near their babies. I was always so paranoid because of that knowledge… I remember not being able to sleep one night for hours because my child brain had tricked me into thinking that a big shadow in our huge walk-in tent was a baby buffalo standing in it! I remember trying so hard to control my breathing and not cry, because I thought at any moment that they mother was going to come in and attack us for getting so close to her baby, despite us just laying in our sleeping bags on cots! The part of the video where Kyle brazenly gets that close to what he thinks are bobcat cubs is totally crazy to me.
Perfectly dealth with the situation, both of you. Notice that not ONCE did she make ANY full-out attempt on "attacking", but just a constant bullying diplay, meant at scaring the threat away from the cubs, nothing else. The posture she displays pawing at he air, jabbing with both paws, trotting sideways, arching her back - all absolutely showing she was NOT intending to pounce, ever! When these guys mean business, ears disappear behind the skull, eyes grow the size of watermelons, the body flattens carpet-like, tail twitches like a whip, and the whole thing is over in a lightning strike, you're down before you even take notice. At that range, if she really meant it, you wouldn't even have known what hit you. You where both actually just cussing at each other, demanding your own living space....I know from experience, I've raised 11 of these magnificent animals - and still bear a 30-stitch scar on my forefront as result of a minor, two-seconds mistake...
Kyle, nicely done! Way to stay calm and collected (as much as possible). Your video and this interview will help a lot of people become better educated about what to do if ever caught in a similar situation. I’m a trail runner too, have done lots of ultramarathon races in the mountains and I have no doubt cougars are out there quietly watching me but I’m lucky that I’ve never been face to face with one.
I'm so glad we don't have any wildlife that attacks you here in Australia. Just snakes to watch out for in Summer and that's bad enough. Glad you and the mum and cubs are all OK. I don't know how you did it walking backwards. Well done and stay safe!!!👍🐨

I had at least a 35 minute encounter with a mountain lion in a canyon at 11 p.m. while hiking alone and unarmed. I cannot throw a rock due to a shoulder reconstruction. It charged me twice and the second charge brought it very close, within a few feet. The only defence I had was to point my hiking poles at it. It took perhaps seconds, although it seemed like minutes to make up its mind to go back a little and bide it's time. It had originally cut me off as I was hiking fast after a 14 mile, 4600 gain hike to get to my car. I was able to notify search and rescue of my situation and where abouts on my second call to them (when I first called them, which took awhile to get through because the canyon interfered with the signal and the operator for 911 thought I was pulling a prank and wouldn't agree to give my message directly to search and rescue and then the signal cut out). Because the mountain lion didn't seem to be fazed when I yelled at it earlier, I kind of copied its behavior by being completely silent while it was considering whether to attack. I didn't want it to feel that I was taunting it (remember the young man at the san San Francisco zoo who was killed by a tiger there that was being taunted by his friends). I admire the actions of the man in this video who after 30 minutes decided to go back down the trail. I was really concerned that it had not gone away. Two months later I did the same hike alone, but mostly during daylight. The only thing worse was being robbed and looking down the barrel of the handgun and thinking any second that a bullet would turn my brain to jelly. As they say, the worst animals are the human animals.
Cheers Kyle, glad you survived my NIGHTMARE! Super healthy respect and love for these apex predators we share the world with. 😯☮️😷 Bravo dude, BRAVO!! 👍
What a rush! Glad you're ok. I've encountered 2 mountain lions. One was confrontational; kind of. I was exiting the garage into the back yard. Standing in the doorway I flipped on a barn light to see a mountain lion between the garage and barn. It was back light. It was about 15 to 20 feet from me and I was petrified. These things are scary!!! I closed the garage door and thought to myself that that thing could bust right threw the door if it wanted to. My encounter was nothing like your 6 minute ordeal but scary enough. Thanks for sharing!
I've watched this many times. I always feel like I'm right there making the same decisions. Thinking about picking up a rock but then not wanting to croutch down and make myself appear smaller and vulnerable.
Yikkkkkes. Scary stuff for sure. Kyle handled it like a boss though. Realizing the cat is just trying to protect her babies and not running or freaking out too much most likely prevented a few scratches here. Loving the channel so far man! Keep em' coming!

THANK YOU...AGAIN, I AM GLAD YOU WERE NOT INJURED AT ALL...THAT'S ALWAYS A BONUS...
It is the right thing to do. Kyle did it, impressively well - probably because he keeps himself in good shape and he's familiar with walking on the trail, and his general characteristics. If you read the recommendations from wildlife experts, they say to never turn your back on a course, never run, maintain eye contact, make loud noises, and make your own body as big as possible, with your arms, and if possible, by holding a jacket above your head with arms outstretched. Walk backwards, steadily. Kyle did an amazing job.
@@kl.1993 You do not hiss at an animal while cowering away and recording it on your phone. Side your phone, use two hands to break off a branch or pick up a couple of rockets. @@graphicism yeah just see how far that will get you bud. Record for us as well, so we know you actually do it. As soon as you take your eyes off of a big cat, it's on you, and it's not leaving till you are DEAD. It will tear you apart. Maintaining eye contact shows them you aren't afraid of them and it will intimidate them, making them think they will have no chance against something stronger than them.
Hi Sir Kyle! Glad you are okay and the cougars are okay too, thanks to your courage and unwilling to just kill it right away. I am from Canada, British Columbia and we have a huge problem with these, sometimes they drop from trees onto you. I was just wondering, I know you like running but a mountain bike can be a comparable form of exercise and you can cover yourself with it if needed. Yeah they tell us to cover yourself with the bike and they can't attack very well and will give up. You could even pick the bike up by the handle bars standing in front of your bike and swing it around and smack it if you have to. Another hint I was told is to rap your bike pump very loud onto your bike seat while being loud and making yourself bigger. Guns are not very effective on cougars at close range, yeah we've had many incidents of this because they are very fast and all over the place. I often considered this scenario and considered a shield and sword would be more effective in close combat(Bike: shield, Machete). Apparently a cougar will attack by running up to you like this one did, bight onto your neck whilst disembowelling you with their hind legs and their claws are very sharp. Then if they are going to eat you they bury you for a while, a form of cougar cook out. Take care Kyle and I hope you consider the bike thing because if you had to travel another 16 miles it wouldn't be as bad. Man Utah is a beautiful place, similar to here in British Columbia. I'm actually an American by the way living in Canada, parents moved up here when I was a kid. If I was going to move back to the USA it would be something like Utah. All the best Mr. Kyle! I'm very proud that the mother cougar is okay because it met you and not some gun nut.

I would have had a heart attack and died on the spot. Kudos to you for surviving this.
Kyle, I can’t express how much respect I have for you, not only did you keep your composure, but you through in a bit of empathy, humor, and humility! So happy that you’re unharmed, best wishes for your future!
it was so dangerous he kept his phone held in his hand the whole time.

Great video and great channel. Shared it a bunch of places.
@@mountaingoattaichi thanks!
@Dacian Traveler great information. Thanks for sharing!
I've been getting ad's for a company that designed gym shorts with an inner concealed carry belt that allows you to carry at any of the popular IWB positions. The company is Arrowhead Tactical. They make shorts and joggers. I'm going to be getting a few of each soon, but there are a few reviews out on youtube.
@Zac In The Wild I'm sharing it, along with the original. Great job!
By video, you do not realize just how close the cat is to him!
When he said four feet my jaw dropped. I couldn't even come close to his level of composure at that distance.
Respect man for staying calm and controlled
Kyle your an amazing person that came thru an experience that you never thoughte would live thru it without a scratch.
Your face and words speak with gratitude and you remain humble thru this experience. No MAN EGO IS TAKING OVER THIS EXPERIENCE because you know she was just protecting her babies. God Bless You Kyle. Stay Humble Kyle and take care.
Thank God you are okay Kyle. I had no clue those cougars flapped their front legs like that. That is horrifying. You did the right thing by keeping direct eye contact and slowly backing up. My gosh. I am so glad you are okay!!!
Yep those front paw swipes will shred human skin!
Glad you're still here with us.
Kyle, I'd like to buy you a beer and a pizza for the correct way you dealt with the cougar.
Lol right!?!
What are you talking about? He coaxed the animal for the video and then got rid of it when he was done... you just throw stones at em
@@graphicism You’re weird
You handled that situation exactly like I train folks to do in my animal encounters part of my classes.
Would a bright flashlight scare it away? Could he have used the light on his phone for that?
@@nofurtherwest3474
Dude, this took place during daytime, and secondly cats have excellent night vision lol. 🤦♀️
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 lol what does night vision have to do with it
@@nofurtherwest3474
I’m only seeing this now because I came back to rewatch this video… My point at the time was that even if this took place at night, a flashlight still wouldn’t have bothered the cat.

Love this guy, and the mama cougar. They both did their part and everyone got out alive.
This cougar video is now literally everywhere. Nice job!
Everybody's always all, "he shoulda this or that..." But you have no idea how you'll react in such a situation. Even the "experts" had their IDK 1st time. It's so scary hearing the exhaustion from fear in his voice.
Everyone is alive and well. He did just fine.

I would have for sure fallen over going backwards an would have been dinner. You’re insane an glad you’re ok of course!
👊
Yes, the gift was great!! He also needs the Arrowhead tactical shorts that another viewer mentioned in their comment.
My favorite part is when he says "this sucks so bad!" Lol
I've been on that trail in that canyon maybe a hundred times, and HE gets all the fun!!!
Thank goodness he didn't trip and fall down while retreating backwards. Can we talk about the amazing camera control too?
Shout out to Kyle for having nerves of steel. I would’ve had a heart attack if I was him.
It’s great to hear the whole story, tyvm for posting this.
I’ve been told I’m a pretty aggressive cougar but this lady blows me away
Man, such a crazy encounter, and I live in Salt Lake. Obviously she was protecting her cubs, but I don't doubt that if she could have added you to the lunch menu for her cubs, she would have done it. Matter of fact, I was told by a hunter that once they "size" you up and believe they can take you down, they will certainly stalk you until they do, or it changes it's mind. Thankfully, this ended on a happy note.
those pounces are scary asl .
Glad this guy is okay. On a side note , amazing video !
I'm glad he's safe, but I'm also glad she went onto the road so he could more easily see EXACTLY where she was/what she was doing.
She did that on purpose, exactly to avoid a real confrontation.
"Yeah get the **** away". This guy really kept his cool
Cool as ice for sure.
That was cool. Turning and running would be loosing his cool and would have gotten him killed.
Man that’s so crazy shows how really close to something like that dangers seen and unseen
I just came across one on Red mountain trailhead...I was in about 10 to 15 yards of me as it crossed the trail. Not sure if it saw me. Trailhead is north of St. George. Scary!
Great kid! I am glad he's okay.
That is wild... Glad he made it out safely!
The video is a good example to keep in mind for parents not allowing their young children to fall too far behind or too far ahead on a wilderness trail; beyond the line of sight & interaction. Includes pets too...
I'm so glad you made it out alive because most people aren't that lucky.
Technically she was stalking you...if she attacked you probably wouldn't be here...I've had many many cougar encounters over the past 30 years.
You pretty much did everything right !
Not "stalking..." Pushing him away from her cub/s.
@@kennyhouser3467 yea that’s what it seemed like to me the first time I watched it
Except for what likely triggered the entire interaction, or at least was a major factor.
Cool as ice!
Grabbing a rock caused the cougar to push up further and pounce a couple of times, he had to gain enough distance to both pick up a rock and throw it at the cougar.
Now that we know he’s OK, look at how beautiful the fall colors are on that trail! 😍🍁
I praise God that Kyle was not harmed. Being ambushed by a mountain lion is a major concern while I'm out hiking, especially during a night hike. We may think we're rough and tumble, but we really don't know how we would respond until it happens. God forbid.
Amazing encounter. You got to carry a mini Bugout. Glad no one got hurt.
I like how he asked the cougar nicely one time. "oh, I know, I haven't been saying Please go away"
Saw your video on an 'ABC exclusive' glad to have found the interview!
Thank you for sharing
Now how the hell would he of killed her?!! 🤦♀️ The cougar was going to kill him! Clearly your loss.
Thank you. I am doing quite a bit of hiking prep out west next week. You handled this really well. I appreciate you sharing.
It wasn't stalking or attacking. It was trying to make him leave the area.
Yeah, that's obvious. Some people just use the wrong words; it's fine... .
Not sure what would have happened if he'd been turning his back
Id say the same to you as i did @xLittlecountryx but im tired of going at these people that always think they NEED so say there thoughts, or that anyone cares.

Indeed.
CRAZY! SOOO GLAD Kyle is safe. Keep up the great content Zac! Cant wait to see more!
Thanks man👊
It's a good thing you're still alive and that cougar is so beautiful
Exactly, on your lion comments . Thank you, I was starting to wonder if anyone in these comment sections had ever even been outside.

I just grew to love Kyle, watching this! I definitely admire him. As you noted, he never stumbled, which is impressive in itself!
I watched the video several times and showed it to my sons. Kyle handled himself so well, and he was even humorous, though he obviously wasn't trying to be funny, but he was.

I absolutely love Utah. In fact, we have thought of moving there, if it could be arranged. It's a great, beautiful State. I miss it. Greetings from Canada. I'm glad that you are safe Kyle, "dude" ☺️!!
I was thinking the exact same thing. A warning shot would have sent the cat running away...
Wow, how did it end, did the cougar end up going on it's way? How heavy was it?
did you get that dispatcher fired?
Who the heck hikes at 11 pm??
Cheers Kyle, glad you survived my NIGHTMARE! Super healthy respect and love for these apex predators we share the world with. 😯☮️😷

Glad your okay brother
What a rush! Glad you're ok. I've encountered 2 mountain lions. One was confrontational; kind of. I was exiting the garage into the back yard. Standing in the doorway I flipped on a barn light to see a mountain lion between the garage and barn. It was back light. It was about 15 to 20 feet from me and I was petrified. These things are scary!!! I closed the garage door and thought to myself that that thing could bust right threw the door if it wanted to. My encounter was nothing like your 6 minute ordeal but scary enough. Thanks for sharing!
Bravos and kudo's to Kyle for his incredibly calm demeanor at a time that was, no doubt, a hair-raising and frightened-beyond-comprehension moment!!!

Glad you and the cat are okay. Bear spray is probably more effective than a knife, and it won't permanently hurt the cat.
Yep, just don't spray it into the wind.
That’s crazy because since he was walking backwards the moment he trips and slips is the moment the cat attacks that’s fucken crazy

So glad you made it out alive.
Nothing but great content so far, keep it up!
Definitely not what I had planned for the second video, but it was really cool to be able to sit down with Kyle and go through it all. Thanks for the support!
