The official necropsy report stated that it was a 4-5 month old lion, about 40 lbs. That's not inconsiderable, if you consider it also had teeth and claws. Travis Kauffman himself, while talking to the press (only a short clip is shown here) said that he didn't think it was full grown; he guessed it weighed about 50 lbs. But that's why he was afraid another lion -- i.e., the mother -- might show up.
I just found out that the guy was lying about the size. The autopsy of the cat concluded that it's weight was around 25 lbs which is less then 15 kg. That is a baby mountain lion. You could kill it easily, so this guy is probably lying about the fight too.

We’ve been stalked by mountain lions a few times, walked up on hogs upwind from us in a rainstorm while hunting, and all those times I was thankful I didn’t have to do what this guy did. The mountain lion in the after life: Yeah you know when I lunged at him I really wasn’t expecting him to block with his hands. It was a good move. He handled himself in the mount very well. Ultimately he got past my guard and was able to get that submission. We’ll get back to work and come back stronger next time.

Still a scary experience for this man to go through but there is no way you wrestle an 80-100 lb. mountain lion for 5-10 minutes without being shredded. Most people don't have experience with wrestling large cats but imagine trying to restrain a 100lb dog that has gone nuts. Unless you are an NFL lineman, you wouldn't have a chance. Full size mountain lions can sprint at 50 mph, can carry over 200 lbs.

30-40 years ago west coast. 63 year old fellow was attacked while walking home from work. Cat tried to bite though his skull. Young one did not have the neck technique down. He killed it with his pocket knife.
It takes a while to completely choke something. The altercation could have reasonably lasted from start to finish 10 minutes that’s not unlikely I don’t think.
I’m from Fort Collins and I remember when this happened! The fact that he had the strength to wrestle with the mountain lion for as long as he did, AFTER having been on a trail run is pretty amazing. So glad he’s okay!

I knew a bartender who walked home with his dog every night after closing time and was shadowed each night for quite a while, no problem. They're mainly curious. American primary care doc here. The fight or flight response is very real. It helped our ancestors survive. I’ve seen small/elderly patients get very confused due to illness/dementia while in the hospital and give security a run for their money. Sad to see but shows the survival instinct.

The mountain lion in the after life: Yeah you know when I lunged at him I really wasn’t expecting him to block with his hands. It was a good move. He handled himself in the mount very well. Ultimately he got past my guard and was able to get that submission. We’ll get back to work and come back stronger next time.

Still a scary experience for this man to go through but there is no way you wrestle an 80-100 lb. mountain lion for 5-10 minutes without being shredded. Most people don't have experience with wrestling large cats but imagine trying to restrain a 100lb dog that has gone nuts. Unless you are an NFL lineman, you wouldn't have a chance. Full size mountain lions can sprint at 50 mph, can carry over 200 lbs.

30-40 years ago west coast. 63 year old fellow was attacked while walking home from work.
Cat tried to bite though his skull. Young one did not have the neck technique down. He killed it with his pocket knife.
The ten minutes was probably more like 2-3 minutes, but in the heat of the moment things seem to flash by and slow down simultaneously.
It takes a while to completely choke something. The altercation could have reasonably lasted from start to finish 10 minutes that’s not unlikely I don’t think.

I’m from Fort Collins and I remember when this happened! The fact that he had the strength to wrestle with the mountain lion for as long as he did, AFTER having been on a trail run is pretty amazing. So glad he’s okay!

American primary care doc here. The fight or flight response is very real. It helped our ancestors survive. I’ve seen small/elderly patients get very confused due to illness/dementia while in the hospital and give security a run for their money. Sad to see but shows the survival instinct.
