  • We needed a cheap, temporary toilet that would work on a sailboat. We considered an existing product called 'The Luggable Loo", but it's not compatible for use while sailing, so we created a sailor-friendly alternative: THE SAILABLE LOO! It's important to note that our sailboat-friendly-bucket-toilet is only compatible with "number 1s". Any devient "number 2s" that find their way into the Sailable Loo will thenceforth be confined without any convenient method of abdication other than hands-on extraction of the aforementioned excrement by the offending party. Even despite this minor limitation, we feel that the Sailable Loo represents the highest possible functionality of which any 5 gallon bucket can aspire to attain. With that said, we will eventually install a proper composting toilet, but until that day arrives the Sailable Loo will tirelessly perform it's doodiless duty.

When we got our 34 footer, I sent wife to sailing school for woman. I think it was called Womanship in Annapolis. Best thing I ever did. It took that fear of the monster boat away. Thanks for another great, fun, silly, and bizarre video. Glad Molly has a place to take a pee now.

    Hey Ben as always a great video. I am probably late with this but here goes. An old painters trick is to store the half used paint can upside down in between uses. This will often eliminate the tendency for the paint to skin over. If it does the skin will be on the bottom and paint will be on the top. Might give it a try if your can seals up good. Keep up the good work and enjoy your sailing season with your wonderful ladies.

Just a trip past the potties on shore to dump the bucket. The composter is the. Best thing to ever be made for a sailboat. No more smelly # 2.

    The distance between your home and the boatyard and all the driving involved would have broken most people. But just imagine if it was $10 a gallon ( like it is in the UK ) ..now that would have broken you .....maybe it's too late now could you have gone through the boat inside and out, before and after all the work you have done.....I said right at the very beginning this westsail was the kind of boat that was worth all the hard work tears time and money.........🏖🏖🏝🏝

    • @Sailboatstory
      @Sailboatstory  Год назад

      If gas was $10/gal here, no this would not have worked, at least not with the extent of travel we've done thus far. Shoot, even when gas was $5/gal, the travel was strainingly expensive, even with our little Yaris that gets 40mpg. Our next refit stage will be less labor intensive, but more expensive as we need to replace our standing rigging, chainplates, and at least a couple through-hulls.

    Cover paint with clear plastic food wrap before sealing the can. This stops that paint skin issue. Create a vapor proof barrier by tearing off 10” and gently laying it on the surface of the paint. My wife uses more and makes sure it is also captured by the lid so that it doesn’t slide around, but she’s smarter than I am. Just remember this should be removed before shaking or stirring the paint before next use.

    You might want to ook at some toilets that use a bag for solids before going with a nature head. Example. "Separret Villa" So much cleaner than a system that needs peat for mixing with solid waste, and no stirring.
    I currently have a one with a urine diverter, but there are also ones with jugs that may be better on boats.

      @@SMM-Mystery Definitely not our's. 😂 Everything you see me do, it's out of necessity. With that said, I've always been fairly comfortable with mechanical things. Do you have a Yanmar? I don't know about any particular RUclips channels to reference, but on Facebook there's a Yanmar Owners Group that has been very handy. Load of helpful people (and few who even know what they're talking about), and a great library of downloadable materials. If you have an engine other than a Yanmar, most of them also have FB groups as well. Nigel Calder also has a great book on diesel engines that covers many aspects of diesels in a very general way, but it's still a fantastic book. I hope that helps.

    I like the simple pee place! I always thought a simple cheap pump from the tank would work well but they do crude up easily with that sort of liquid. ( I worry about carrying the full tank to dump….and disconnecting the pipe each time but I’m sure you have it figured out)
