  • A complete composting toilet in a bucket WITH a urine diverter! I've built a couple of composting, or sawdust toilets using nothing but a bucket and have finally designed one that we think is perfect. Most others have to have a plywood box built around them in order to get a urine diverter to work, but if you do your homework you can make one that's way more simple. If you need one for your RV or for overlanding, canoeing, emergencies or whatever, be sure to check this out.

Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If your into being off-grid and boondocking, or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. @oldladytoofast I was thinking the same thing. I wonder if he could make a hole in the lid of the nut jar that catches the urine and the hose could fit tightly through that hole. Then lid could remain on nut jar. Have a second lid with no hole for when you want to move nut jar to empty it. And there must be some sort of little piece, like an ironing board leg end cover or similar that could fit over end of urine tube when there’s no jar under it.

I have to tell you my very positive experience with the composting toilet that I built in my 26' Class C.
I'm a usually solo full-time RVer. When I first started out 5 years ago, I found the most disgusting thing I had to deal with were the standard pedal flush RV toilet and that horrible black tank. The flap in that toilet didn't seal well and it really stunk, especially if I was driving with any windows down.
    Here's what I did...
I removed the crappy plastic RV toilet and the teeny, tiny useless bathroom sink and sealed off the black tank. Then, making sure that my measurements perfectly accommodated a regular 5 gallon bucket inside, I built a cabinet with a hinged lid out of scrap lumber and I lined the inside with some scrap melamine and caulked the seams to keep it clean and leakproof inside. I bought a polycarbonate urine diverter, which is basically a glorified funnel, from a UK company for $15. It covers about the front third of the seat opening and only blocks about 3-4" of the bucket and I found it best to mount the diverter on top of the cabinet lid rather than the bottom side.
AND get this... for the urine, I bought a rectangular 2-1/2 gallon pet food storage container with a lid and a sturdy side handle from Walmart for I think about $7. It's a bit shorter than the bucket and it sits perfectly in front of the bucket inside the cabinet, and the urine diverter already had a down tube so all I had to do was cut a proper hole in the plastic lid of the container. No hoses, no nothing else, and it doesn't have to be tight around the funnel into the lid of the urine pot. I don't make it a habit to drive with a full urine container but I have driven the RV with a half full container without any splash or spillage. My composting toilet never, ever stinks, and I will tell you how and why.
I bought a really nice, comfy, quality elongated regular toilet seat ($22) that easily mounts on top of the cabinet. Sitting on my composting toilet is literally no different than a regular toilet. It's quite comfortable. And I think the end result looks great and it outperforms any branded composting toilet on the market and by any measure. Less than $5 for hinges brought my total investment to under $50. I saved that much the first 2 months in dump fees.
Now the down and dirty... I do not have a lid of any kind on my 5 gal. bucket because it simply doesn't need it. I just put a regular 13 gal. scented trash bag inside the bucket that's super clean and easy to remove, and be discarded in the trash. The only thing I do with the number two is, after going and before throwing a bunch of toilet paper in, I sprinkle a small handful of either Pine or Cedar Pet Bedding to cover the dooty. You can find the pet bedding in a relatively small 15L bag from the Pet department at Walmart for about $3-4. I keep that handy in one of those same 2-1/2 gal. Pet Food containers. It's amazing how much bedding is in those bags. One package is enough to last me and my guests about a year. I can easily go 3-4 weeks before I have to dump the dooty bag in with the trash. I don't let my urine container get full, so I end up dumping it every 5 to 7 days. I can go as long as 10 days, and I can dump it in any available toilet or outhouse, RV sewer hookup, or RV Dump station, easy as you please. I do take the time to flush it clean and occasionally brush it out.
Now... I've tried adding various additives such as vinegar or bleach to the urine bucket to eliminate odors but the very best thing I've discovered by far is a product called Fabuloso which you'll find by the Windex at Walmart. I recommend buying the gallon size jug (about $7), and after dumping the urine container I pour in a couple cups or so into the urine container each time and that totally eliminates any odor and in fact has a very pleasant scent. My visitors tell me that they can't smell a thing.
The reality is this... It took me less than half a day to complete the project, and of all the improvements and upgrades I've made to my RV, the composting toilet is hands down the best.

Wow! Thanks! I appreciate the comments regarding alternatives like kitty litter, coconut fibre, etc., for those of us who don’t have access to sawdust. Some off-grid homeowners (Off Grid with Doug and Stacy) use a 5 gallon bucket sawdust toilet system in their houses, and then they compost the contents of the buckets.
Another good environment-friendly idea I saw, in case another toilet paper shortage crisis, (Rain Country videos) was cutting up old tee shirts, cotton sheets, etc. into lots of squares to use for the tidy-up instead of toilet tissue. The used squares are placed after use into a bucket with a lid, like an nice old chamber potty, or a bean crock, or some people use a diaper pail, and then they are laundered.

My experience with urine diverters in bucket toilets is that they are more trouble than they're worth.
A cheap 5 gal bucket lined with a heavy bag and the use of 90% sawdust & 10% clumping kitty litter has been the ticket for me. No fuss.. no muss.. no mess and nothing really to clean. If the bucket does foul by chance, replace it like you said at Walmart or home depot.
    Thanks for the video...

That’s a great idea! I’m going to try that! First time using a poo/pee bucket in a privacy tent was interesting but when we left the site to go into town, a gust of wind came up and knocked the bucket over and created a big mess! After we got it cleaned up we put a large rock in the bottom under the bag and didn’t have anymore problems. How do you dispose of the saw dust and kitty litter when you need to dump it? We are camping on our own private property that we just purchased. Would you recommend maybe a “compost pile” set up if it is a more permanent location? We will eventually build an off grid cabin.

If your burying it then a pair of post hole diggers and a bottomless bucket would be best anyway. When I was a preen teen kid. I dreamed of owing a vw van and wandering ..... the world.
Then I got married had kids, and became a responsible adult long before I was anywhere near grown up or adult.
In my late 30's my make believe life fell apart in a tangled up, convoluted mess that I could not fix, didn't want to take back and I really did not want to go forward. Within six years later an accumulation of neglected injuries both physical and emotional basically threatened to take my life.
Recovery was long and by the grace of God my body healed beyound expectation.
I felt I had something to prove. So I worked and struggled to be "what" I thought I should be.
Eventually mentally I broke a little more and a little more.
I didn't know how to live. I knew how to survive.
With much encouragement and how to info from many you tube channels, particularily "Cheap RV Living" I developed the confidence and alot of information to know. That I could live in a van and have what I knew would be my best shot at the life that I felt sure would fit me.
Thank you for Cheap RV Living. I camped on the cheap for many years previously. Not only for economical reasons but primarily because it is my preference to have more space and privacy.
I am happier than I have ever been but I am missing something.

    Great video. Clear and thorough!
I designed built and used a urine diversion toilet for 5 years while living in Africa. A built in one is easier because you can gain height by designing step ups etc. I used a big dustbin of maybe 100 litres for the solids and a 20 litre jerry can for urine. Lasted 6 months and 14 days respectively. Banana plants can be fertilised with neat urine!
Not sure what you have tried before as a urine catcher but it's good to remember that a funnel does not need to be set with a horizontal rim. Only that the outflow is lower than the lowest point on the rim. This makes geometry hard to visualise but helped me fitting a large funnel without ever allowing solids and urine to cross contaminate.
It's a great system and much underappreciated.
Water flush toilets are unsustainable from the water they use and the pollution that has to be managed on such a huge scale. 👍👍👍

I've been doing research on composting toilets to replace the regular toilet in my rv. While I will be building a box for mine, I had to comment on your use of the gamma lid. A few years ago, when I still had 2 of my 5 kids at home, I spent the summers cooking in a tree planting camp and was able to bring the kids along. We stayed in an older trailer we had been given. It no longer had a toilet of any kind in it though, so we also came up with using a bucket with a gamma lid too. The kids and I used it for 3 years of summers. We did limit its use to peeing only, as the camp had outhouses we could use when needed. It worked great, never smelt and was easy to dump and clean.

Great instructional video. This may be too tall at 21 1/2", but swimming pools around here throw away buckets that powdered chlorine comes in. Not sure of gal (8-10). They have screw-on locking lids. It would be a cheap alternative but would need something to sit on.
I used Moxie 18 gal/2mil plastic bags in my RV at my land over the winter since the water was off. I put it in the toilet and changed each time I used them. They are 2'x2' and very heavy duty. In fact I carry rocks in them when I'm collecting. If you didn't use the funnel it would make for a quick fix.
Another thing, if you use a cheap plastic funnel, you can put a dowel in the end, heat up, and bend to an angle. Same as the plastic tubing. Heat up in boiling water and use something to expand the end, and slip over the larger object like the metal adapter you used rather than push inside. And, as a final Old Indian Trick, we used to put that fiber tubing that you show in boiling water with Rit Dye and so as to match the color of the tubing to that of our Harleys.
But you probably know all of this.

Although, an 18 gallon bag 🎒 seems awful big for 1 time uses. Wouldn't that get terribly expensive after awhile?
Never heard of that brand of plastic bag before.
Where could one purchase such an item?
They sound very good as far as thickness goes.
Wouldn't have to double bag all the time.

I bought them at Home Depot if you have one where you are at. I've seen them other places but can't remember.
It is a bit of an overkill, but well worth it guaranteeing that the bag wouldn't accidentally rip and it does a great job of sealing the smell in. I had a need to double bag so I'm not sure they cost much more once you figure in two bags.

I use a gamma lid on my bucket. When I take off the lid I pop on a pool noodle (that has a slit down the length of it) and slide it on the top edge of the bucket. It is much more comfortable. I also use a smaller 9.5 inch diameter bucket that fits just inside of the larger one. That way I can double bag the smaller one plus it has a lid of it's own (double sealed). No worries about cleaning out buckets. I use a 3.5 gallon bucket instead of a 5 gallon bucket. Its shorter but my 9.5 inch inside bucket is just low enough to clear the gamma lid on top. I chose the shorter bucket (just under 11.5 inches high with gamma lid on) because it fits under my van bed easily. I'm a guy so I dont need a diverter, just a pee bottle. You want to keep your solids and liquids separated otherwise the smell will prevail. Use an absorbent with your solids will help also. I purchased the buckets at Lowes. Gamma lid on Amazon.

I'd stay away from high rise toilets. Industry and commerce wants us to switch out short seats for high ones...then the medical industry takes over when a person get 'impacted' so to speak. Our natural position is to squat. Too many people don't have the strength to squat and rise again. Lost their squat. Obese, weak, hubris...commerce and ingenuity... 'I can beat that' mentality.
