- My friend kept insisting that we needed to review the OGO compost toilet, but I kept putting it off. After all, we have been getting along just fine with our sawdust toilet and it accompanying sawdust bucket and urine containers - - What did we need a new toilet for? Well let me tell ya, because this changed our camping lives.

Getting out on the road is what Linda and I love to do with our converted cargo trailer camper. We're part time nomads and the nomadic lifestyle suits us to a Tee. Whether your RV is a camper van, camp trailer, travel trailer, motorhome or just a car and a tent, there's going to be something interesting for you in the videos we produce. Back roads and overlanding are part of what we do while exploring the western states for beautiful, peaceful and sometimes remote places to camp on BLM and National Forest land (public land). Taking care of ourselves as much as possible and doing our own repairs is a must because we travel on a fixed income and a limited budget. If you're into being off-grid and boondocking or doing dispersed camping whenever possible then you'll appreciate the discussions on batteries, solar panels and solar chargers or power stations and 12v refrigeration. Come on along, we're happy to have your company!

Like I mentioned in the video, Linda and I did use a bucket and sawdust for years, so we are well aware of what the bucket toilet is like. These compost toilets are a whole lot better than that! If you're traveling by yourself then the bucket might be ok, but if you are with someone else then it's nice having a system that you can use inside without driving the other person out into the cold dark night to get away from the smell. The cost is because it's made in America and not China. People with black tanks on board especially find these to be a simpler and cleaner alternative.
Sorry I struck a nerve which was not my intention. As I am well aware having using the bucket system differently than yourself it doesn't have to smell if you had modified the way you used it. But I'm sure it's easier to justify this expensive toilet if you sponsor it and get it for free. I wonder how you would feel if you had to pay out of your pocket for it. You left that out. But to each his own.
@manny I agree
Yeah, traveling solo has it's advantages, and disadvantages. I don't think there's anyone out there that would put up with me for an extended period of time - so "win" (?) for me! 😆 I know how bad odors can be when it's just me. I have a large Viddle Vault (gamma lidded container meant for pet food) that I transport waste from camp to disposal so I don't have to smell it any longer than absolutely necessary.
I've gotta agree. I've been subscribing since day l. I liked them as an older but still cute couple. They seemed to emphasize minimizist thinking. They were on a tight budget as most of us are. Rick you told us that on several occasions. But once the platform started gaining a following the product reviews started rolling out. Yes it helps pay the bills but....l turned off for awhile Rick when you reviewed one lithium ion battery packs after another. You're fair but it felt like the latest one was the best. For all practical purposes they're darn close. But l see several power stations laying around. So yes some luster came off the bloom. Now we're into the electric bikes. Yes neat but about $2 grand not hardly minimalist now it's a pooper for a grand! I have a 6x10x6 WeeRoll original Nomad model built using steel not aluminum. Sure l'd prefer the alum. trailer but with my retirement budget forget it...same with solar. I use 4 6V lead acid boat anchors....heck the lithium ion babies were a grand or more. Again a budget buster. I take care of my batteries but if l didn't l cud easily replace them and still afford gas. Yes l traded off first cost and threw it out into a higher operating cost...but extra gas didn't bankrupt me...even when its price soared. I couldn't predict lithium would be so.much less expensive...and ld have been home bound till the price dropped. I purchased a couple of lithium power banks to supplement but l haven't had any things l needed to put them out. So l love you two kids to bits...wish l lived closer to Montana rather than Pennsylvania but we stay virtial friends via your channel. Pls don't forget your roots.....
I for one would prefer this cleaner system! It's fantastic in its design & flexibility! Yes there's an outlay but when it comes to something like POOP no price is too high to make sure that poop stays FAR , FAR away!
😂
I've just come across your channel. I lived on a narrowboat in the UK for a decade. Our boat was built with a cassette toilet which packed up after 6 years. We researched compost toilets and we met boaters who had an Airhead marine compost toilet. We decided to purchase one and it only took 2 hours to install and hook up the fan. Ten years later the compost loo continues to work beautifully with no smell. I wanted to share a urine bottle cleaning hack. Denture tablets will remove any build up inside the bottle. Once a month drop 2 denture tablets into the emptied and rinsed out urine bottle. Fill with water not quite to the top and let it sit for an hour or so. The longer the better. Empty out, rinse and you are good to go.
Thank you for the cleaning hack!
Thanks for sharing that! ❤
A teaspoon of citric acid should do the trick too...
It's interesting that after all these decades of recreational camping, there is still nothing that beats the ol bucket. At any price really.
Agreed. The bucket is ol' reliable. Plus, it doubles as a head covering, if you are out camping during a hail storm.
totally agree bucket compost is super cheap and very easy to replace vs. $2000.00 for a professional built compost toilet...
@@crabbingclammingboatcampin4962 Lol, I'll pass. I think I'll use my pasta pot...😎
@@crabbingclammingboatcampin4962💩 just make sure it's empty HAHAHAHA
Yes, indeed! The 5 gallon bucket/pine pellet system seems WAY less complicated (not to mention WAY WAY cheaper) to use than a composting toilet. I've been using one at my bedside for several years. As a Senior, I've had some urgent, middle-of-the-night times when I knew my bladder just couldn't make the walk down the hallway it in time. Unless you're slow about emptying it (I'm talking more than 3 days), yes, it will start to smell but thus far, I've had absolutely no trouble with odor or disposing the bag. As far as comfort, well, if you're simply sitting on the rim of a bucket, sure, it's not comfortable!. Just purchase one from the companies that make them with a toilet-like seat and a lid and you'll be just fine!
For $1,150, I will stick with my 5 gallon bucket and odor bags. When you use compost or lime, a bucket works great.
What bags do you use?
@@RachelInTheRaw I ordered them on Amazon. Toilet bags. Lots of different ones. Don’t remember the exact brand I bought.
Cat litter works well also
I use a 5 gallon bucket and plastic bag with pine shavings from the feed store. Its pet bedding. With grey pipe foam for the rim to sit on. My family uses this when things get down below freezing and we shut off our well and empty the hot water heater and drain the pipes so nothing can freeze.
Excellent presentation 👍! Glad it's from the USA 💯 THANK you for covering this subject, most don't even know about this option:)
You had me until the price. Omg. 1200 dollars to poop? I'll use my bucket. They don't have to sink. Using a bucket since 2007.
kitty litter works well enough, and urine should always go in a separate container. If you're actually in a desert, excrement will dry up in two days or so. So just go and bury it. 1200 for a crapper is ridiculous!
@@vonjunzt4130
There really is no need to have the urine go into a separate container. Use the correct dry media with 10% kitty litter. Throw in a sprinkle of bread yeast & an oxidizer now and then and you'll be good to go.
Urine diverters are a pain!
@@shadowcastre Bread yeast? Interesting. What does it do?
@@Kayte...
Bread yeast feeds on the bacteria and the remaining sugars from human waste and reduces/eliminates odors. I use it in the blue chemical toilets at work as well. You should start to notice a difference in about an hour after application.
@@shadowcastre hmmm, thanks. I have a clivis multrum composting system. Sticks and bricks. I wonder how the yeast will work there. I'll give it a try.
Hey now I had a very nice toilet and I traded up for a 5 gallon bucket with a trashcan liner in it and a padded toilet seat from Walmart. Best man best investment I’ve ever made.
That’s a nice setup but with a camping lid for my 5 gallon bucket I sit comfortably and I cover the waste with potting soil and really don’t have any odors. I could never justify that price although it appears to be a quality product.
Me too, I use dirt& sawdust mix. When 3/4 full I leave it sit inside covered bucket for 1 year then dump out as fertilizer.
In his previous videos on bucket system he recommended then also said no smell and said don’t use coconut core but now it’s good 😮
Neither could he; hence, this review. An voila…it’s free. Lol.
@@richardvalitalo3670p
Great review Rick. Linda with her shovel and roll a bum fluff ahahahahaaa!
I get the price shocks most but like you said, the market is small and the customer who would see the value are those who do live this lifestyle full time or most of the year. Weekenders would probably not care to spend the money and would rather use a bucket. However, those who boondock, those who enjoy not having tanks on board and those who live this life style or have fishing camps, hunting camps would probably want to invest in this toilet. Great review and I'm glad you like it! Made in the 🇺🇸 and a 5 yr warranty is awesome!
I use pool float tubes to cover the rim (cut to size) on the 5 gal bucket.. and kitty litter of any kind does wonders on odor instantly. Just have some in the bag to absorb and add some after it's used. Cover the 5 gal bucket with the handy lid until ready to dispose of. My whole family used this method while waiting for a plumber to arrive one day. I was grateful that my toilet paper plugged toilet wasn't full of you know what on top! I'm sure my plumber was too.
What a brilliant idea using pool tubes!! Shall be trying that. Thanks
It’s good to know that they stand solidly behind the product.
Add worms to the solid buckets; those abate coliform bacteria, & compost the solids faster. That also reduces the bulk of the solids, so, it reduces how often the solids need emptied.
As a gardener I suggest using the European Red Worms. These are far more aggressive than American ones when it comes to breaking down the solids. I use them in my gardens and in my compost pile.
@@joycebowen8958 🤔Wonder why those are more vigorous?
🤔Where can anyone in the US get them?
🤔Would they be an invasive species?
…..But yes…..red worms that live in the top several inches of dirt, are the ones most able to abate coliform bacteria that health departments worry about.
That means, if your composting toilet uses red worms to help break down the solids, it composts faster, & cleaner.
Ana Eddy, from “Solviva”, discovered this, & invented 2 kinds of composting toilets using them. …One handles an old, gallons/flush toilet upstairs in their farmhouse. ….The other one has a 9-bucket worm compost bin in a greenhouse, that never requires manually cleaning the buckets, because worms do it.
@@joycebowen8958 ironic since the American worms were apparently imported from europe
I realize worms don’t jump but I couldn’t poop right over worms. That would creep me out. But I want to compost like this!
@@TamBam2u back in the '70s I read a Mother Earth News article and it said to put a trashcan of dirt and earthworms next to the toilet and put your used paper in it instead of flushing and it breaks it down into a rich compost. Maybe that might work for you?
For me, simple is best. Reliance Hassock with 3 gal bucket, sawdust. Lightweight and no power needed. I can take it outside to use at remote sites.
The review of the OGO was well done. Informative, clear and delivered answering questions one might ask in a systematic logical way.
If OGO is ready to sell to the travelling or off grid market I suggest they ask you to be their voice to the public.
Informative, trustworthy, and last but certainly not least, you have the voice grandchildren and adults love much like that of Mr. Rogers.
Video of Excellence.
One of the most thorough reviews I have ever seen. Thank you.
With a great demo like that everyone should be able to decide if this apparently well-built unit is worth the price. My concern is about the electrical components which are guaranteed for 1 year and I'm not talking about the exhaust fan, which I think would be fairly reliable and easily replaceable. I'm talking about the electric agitator that mixes the peat and poop and the sensor that tells you if the pee container is getting full. If the pee volume sensor fails you could guess when it's time to empty, but if the electric agitator fails, there doesn't seem to be a backup way of mixing the peat after each usage. If I were with the OGO company I'd make the unit with a window to monitor the pee level and I'd have a mechanical backup for the electrical mixer.
Yes, I'd rather hand crank it for 45 seconds.
One huge advantage of this system is the weight advantage; lifting a cassette tank (my current toilet) that weighs 20-40 pounds and trying to pour the waste out takes a lot of coordination, not to mention bravery, is a painful process but the celebration when I don't spill or splash waste on myself when dumping is something to behold, unfortunately I have to be half drunk to build up the bravery to empty that thing...This OGO will be in my next camping rig.
🤙
I really like that design. But, as with all the other compost toilets, the sticker shock is prohibitive. The DIY solutions are so much less expensive, even if they do have fewer features.
I go camping all the time and this looks like the perfect weekender toilet, the wife and I would love it. Thanks for sharing!
Rick, your demonstration was spot on. This product is much easier to maintain as opposed to the other heavier options out there.
Excellent illustration I gave you five stars I actually understood what he was explaining. He has taken poop to a whole new level.
Perfect for camping and potential grid down scenario.
For all of the regular use, how nice to have it aerated, mixed and simple to slide out to dump. I love it and especially that it can channel the fumes out.
I think this makes living with messiness or stinkiness, non-factors. In close quarters and with a lot of use, it's going to be one less misery to worry about. Thank you for the detailed information!!
Thanks for the review, Rick. You might suggest to OGO to have the intake and outlet uninstalled in the unit, so the purchaser could install them in whatever way works best for their situation.
That's actually a good idea, Don, because it's fairly easy to snap the parts into place, but not too get them out.
Great idea!
Well said, a nice thing to have. Anyone that uses a system like you DID, understands exactly. Pricy, though...
BTW, peat moss is not sustainable, coconut coir is!
Great tip!
I like the pine shavings or sawdust for composting.
I also use biodegradable TPaper.
Thank you for that great, comprehensive review! Maybe one day, but I’ll stick with my bucket for now. It has a comfortable toilet seat with lid and I use Pelletized Animal Bedding from Tractor Supply. Works well and no bad smells. 💩
My system exactly !! Works like a charm. No need to separate. As long as I'm stationary, I also use it as my trash can. NO ODOR !!! If I go # 2, I'll tie it off, just in case I need to leave in a hurry. $6 of pellets lasts a long time. Tossing a bag occasionally vs. emptying a full bucket seems so much easier to me. I'm glad there are so many options, as everyone has their own preferences. I look at every option that is reviewed, but at the end of each, I prefer my good old fashioned bucket, which can also be used to gather firewood, haul water if needed, can double as an extra seat, can be used inside or outside, etc., no mechanical failure, easy to replace if it should ever require it, etc. So many advantages for my own personal purposes, and the least expensive option by far.
Great thorough review Rick! 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻🤙🏻
This compost toilet looks very nice. I'm using a Campco porta potty in my van for now I like being able to throw my waste in a regular toilet at a rest stop. Thank you for this review.
I think that toilet looks really good. The cost to me, is more you get what you pay for or what you didn't pay for. It appears to solve a major challenge I have, it looks good and my wife would use it if needed. I hate the idea of black tanks they are just horrible, cassette toilets is just a smaller black tank in my opinion and people get upset if you emptying them down their toilets and I can understand why. Best info commercial I have seen. Well done and thank you.
I STILL LIKE THE 5 GAL BUCKET AND A PLASTIC BAG
Us 2!
Me 3 ! 👍
Don’t see how this is much better. Plastic bag and a toilet seat on my bucket is not really a big deal
Easy peasy
Me toooo!!!
Tastefully done review. But for the money I would still have to go for the bucket and bag with sawdust. But for those who can afford it I think it looks like a great unit and I've watch videos on all the major brands. Thank you!
Horse pine pellets works great
Really good review on the potty ! Exchange on those plastic vent placement needs addressed for sure ! For that kind of money they can keep it ! I’ll stick with the bucket for now ! Thanks for sharing Rick . 🤔
Hi Rick. Thanks for a great post. I've actually watched two other posts on this product and both left me with more answers and the price seemed way more that I was willing to pay. You video answered most of my unanswered questions. Your videos are always so thorough and I can tell you've done your homework. I'm still not sure on the price. However, after your video I will absolutely look into this option. Thanks again. 🤙👣
For me at 65 with a 30 ft 2006 Coachman Camper I only paid $2000 for 3 years ago. I can't justify that price for me. I live on a lot less than that OGO costs, every month.
Living in Northern Michigan I have a bathroom with a toilet. But no water hookup in winter of course. So its a plastic handle tie grocery bags and pine pellets, Soaks up urine with no odor as well as the solids. Goes out in the trash with the kitty litter also pine pellets. A box of the grocery bags cost $18 at Sam's club for 1000 bags. That I can handle. You are great at explaining the product and if it was in my budget , something I needed...I would surely buy one. Simply because of your great presentation.
I’m personally glad Rick reviewed this toilet. I’d never heard of it before and it seems like a good solution for some. I looked at the company’s website. Now they have come out with a simpler $200 version. That one interests me for my van. Great job Rick!
Here in Australia that’s a relatively cheap one. Although once it’s converted to au dollars probably the same. Looks good. I made my own with a bucket and a urine diverter which I purchased. Works well my only gripe with mine is it’s a bit tall due to the bucket I used which I’d built a frame around and sat a toilet seat and lid on.
We actually got the OGO in January. It works great. I want to give you a heads up to check something though. I noticed some odor and figured it was time to empty. I was mortified to open it and there was a pile of unmixed waste on top. 😮I pushed the button and the motor was going but the agitator wasn’t moving. After emptying and cleaning I found that the screw at the bottom of the bucket had come loose allowing the gear to disengage. It was an easy fix fortunately. I applied thread locking compound to the screw, and will double check it when emptying from now on. Might be a good idea to get some spare gear parts to keep on hand just in case as well.
Thank you for that heads up; that actually happened to our friend, and he told us about it so we were watching for it. Also, he let OGO know about it too.
Another good product review! You provide a lot of good info to us, which really helps with our buying decisions. Thank you and safe travels!
Thank you.
Johnny composts at etsy has accessories like urine diverter, vent etc to make a 5 gal compost toilet for a fraction of money.
Great job explaining and introducing this product! Thanks.
Looks great. I have seen others review this and I think you have been the most thorough.
OGO must be very happy with this review - Good job!
Really good review, you do them well.
Looks well designed - thank you for this well done video!
Thank You and Linda for what you do. Great reviews Thank you again. have fun stay safe and stay warm.
Great review Rick,
That is a handy toilet! I may have to look into buying one for traveling. It would also come in handy in our storm shelter.
Safe travels.
JT
I do appreciate your detailed review.
Thanks this would be great for a off grid lifestyle ..quick set up.. is expensive but so is a plumber..great products do cost more. I love your product reviews KOKO keep on keeping on greetings from NC
Thanks, Candy!
Very nice built product...Great revue...
Thank you for the informative video on the toilet.
Excellent review and information for my travel adventures..Thank you for sharing, a great alternative (up-grade) to what my wife and I have been using..
It does look interesting..!
I've never had the issues with the 5 gal bucket toilet that you spoke of...
1) No bad smells when vented..
2) Super easy cleanup/disposal with a bag..
3) Proper 1 ply septic safe T paper breaks down no problem, no separation needed..
4) I never use a urine diverter, they're a pain.
5) I've been using dry sawdust & kitty litter 90/10 and a sprinkle of bread yeast now and then...
6) Anchor the toilet with a small box frame for the bucket to sit in, bungee the lid down for travel... No fuss no muss!
7) I use a real toilet seat. Lift it off for cleaning/disposal, new bag, Snap it back in place..
8) Finally.. if the bucket ever fowls. Replace it, they are cheap and everywhere..
I do like the idea of peat moss... I'll have to try that!
For the simplicity and keeping it affordable.. I'll be sticking with the 5 gallon bucket system. With my bucket toilet cost savings over a compost toilet, I can now justify spending the money on the lockout hub conversion kit for my 4x4 Ram which will get me 2 to 3 mpg increase.
Thanks for the video...
Stick with the sawdust. Peat moss harvesting damages the environment and it also takes a very long time to develop. Don't remember how long, could be 1,000s of years, maybe more, maybe less. Check it out when you have time.
Agree, pray miss is not environmentally sound but coconut coir is a better alternative but I’ve never had an issue with sawdust tho!
Peat moss is not ecologically sound.
Thank you so very much for walking us through this this is something that I really need to look into we’d love to camp
Great comic relief spots by Linda!
Very good tutorial , sound like a good product .
What a great review. Saving this info for later.
I like it. As always great review
Thanks for the review we’ll definitely look into it.
Hi Rick/Linda...... We own the OGO compost toilet. Put it in our Toyhauler Trailer in early January 2023.
Why invest so much....we are Full-Timing it. So far its great. Was an EASY install and we did vent it out the side of the trailer. And NO smells at all. When you do empty the inside bucket it is an earthy smell as you said. Nope no💩💩 smell at all. We use the coconut coir. Been great when we want to boondock for long lengths of time....especially when snowbirding it in Quartzsite. Great review Rick. And we too love the company!
Thanks for your comment, it's nice to have another user tout it's value.
Great video. Great product!
very well done review, cool product!
Looks like a great product.
Thanks. I'm a city guy now and have no need of one of those. Your video sure answered some questions I have had about your lifestyle.
Fabulous, thx for the info and great demo. When I decide to get out there this will be the John I choose👍
Thanks for a great tip.
thanks for the review, rick..
Nice presentation and worth the money if you live in a travel trailer or a tiny home . Saving in water cost and water weight . No black tank to fuss over and no smell . I just don't like the idea of making a hole in the floor because I don't want any unwanted guests so I would probably would like to do it in the side of a rig.
Great review 👍
I really like it. But for that price I want full warranty for 5 years including the electronics, even then 🤔, 600$ because here in Canada that goes up fast.
Cheers
Ooohh! This looks like a great option
Sounds like a really good toilet and I feel like it’s worth the price!
Looks like a very complex unit for the job it has to do. I'll stick with my bucket system!

Such a great review and explanation!! Thank you. I converted a skoolie and used a bucket for 3.5 years and then converted a TINY van and traveled in it full time 4 3 months and used the bucket. Planning to buy a cargo trailer in the next couple months and will definitely be going with this compost toilet!!!
Fantastic!
Hahahahaha, your wife sure pulls off the funny!
I use the C-Head (made in Florida) which is very similar and I'm very happy with it.
Interesting option for a couple in an RV build. Pro tip from a gardener for ya; you can also open the top of the peat / coir bag and add water directly to it / agitate easily. Thanks for the video 👍
Thanks for the tip!
nice review
A piece of cheese cloth works well for a vent screen & a little Diatomaceous earth mixed into compost tank takes care of any bug or flies that might get into it.
That fan's nice, now everyone can smell what you had for dinner! ; - )
Looks to I that there could be cleaning situations with this that immediately makes me want to go back to simple 5 gallon bucket with sawdust and plastic bags. Hmmm and the price, well convenience, comfort, and no odor cones with a price, but then what about cleaning, no thanks. Nice review tho, you have great videos
Bucket wins! My bucket has a very comfortable seat, so I don't understand the comparison at all. We even built our own composting systems in the house and the camper van. While backpacking, we just use the trowel and squeeze bottle bidet method, away from habitation or water sources.
Very interesting, thanks
Yea , that's a good set up. I like it buddy 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
