Thank you for this!!! I can attest to everything you say. As per your recommendation, I used it on my recent 4 day SUV camping trip in Arizona and it worked out GREAT! Thanks for the warning about how much it expands as well. As someone who has always been afraid of extended trips due to the fact that I #1 like every hour, this is a game changer for me. Exceptional absorption and odor control (for 1 and 2) at a great price. Thanks again.
For the purposes of killing odor, scented trash bags are better than nothing... but they're really only suited for holding trash. Non-scented trash bags are safe for water storage and can even be used as a protective garment that keeps fallout from binding to your skin. The scented oils that are sprayed onto scented trash bags will bind to radionucleides or pollute any water stored in them. Stock up on the plain-jane plastic bags! They're useful for anything under the sun
Second comment because I love your channel. Could you please try and prototype/use your current toilet for defecations? This topic is very important to me and I'd really love to find the best way to do this stuff
Yes we have used for #2. I have a kitty litter scoop that I use to cover it with either pellets in the potty or fresh pellets. This helps to keep the odor down. But if you go very frequently, you'll probably find that you need to change the bag more often. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell someone exactly how to use this set up. It really boils down to how often you use the potty. It's just something you would have to give a go at and see what is the best way it will work for you. But I do hope this helps you some.
I had used pine shavings from Tractor Supply for several years in my compost toilet that I keep upstairs for middle of the night duty calls. It worked okay as long as I covered each use well. But I experienced the full "flowery" scent when dumping the bucket in my compost bin. Then I started using the pine pellets. What a difference. No odor whatsoever, even when dumping. I highly recommend them!
@@HappyPlaceCamping I just converted the toilet in my other bathroom into a composting toilet and now I dont have to worry about flushing it if they ever decide to shut the water off for some ungodly reason.
If you're worried about the weight being too much for the bag, use the bucket to transport the tied bag to where you plan to store/dispose of the used pellets. You can also double line the bags and only remove the top one unless there was a tear.
I use the same thing, I solo tent camp a lot in heavy bear country and don’t want to get out in the middle of the night surprising a bear (don’t ask how I know this lol) I add a bit of yeast as well, this helps create good bacteria to decompose safely. No smell but I do change it very often since I go camping for several weeks at a time. 👍🏻
@@carmenmartinez2882 That’s an interesting tip about the yeast and YIKES on the whole bear thing. That thought scares me for tent camping in some areas.
@@HappyPlaceCamping black bears basically are just looking for your food, is because I surprised her or I should say we surprised each other and she had a cub, she warned me but could’ve been worse and yes that was enough to use my toilet at night inside the tent.
Pellet stove pellets is what we use. We wet the pellets before we use them so it's just a nice fluffy powdery material. Yup! Makes your toilet smell like a sawmill! Works Great!!!
Absolutely this! I am so glad you found actual composting material...it works much better for "our" use. The pellets are especially designed to absorb liquid, so if you have a sealing lid and sprinkle several handfuls in before and after use, you can use the toilet freely both ways for well more than a day for two people without any smell or nastiness. I do try to use outside "facilities" for "liquid dispersal" as much as possible. Use composting 5 gallon plastic bags and just throw them away...to compost with their pine. Pee away! The composting comes after it is gone!
Have you thought about putting the top of the plastic bag over your toilet seat instead of under it? - don't have to clean the seat often and if you miss whilst doing #2, the bag catches it all.
Thank you so much! We've been without toilets for about a week due to a burst pipe. We're using a bedside commode for disabled people, paired with a thick plastic contractor bag and a 5 gallon bucket. This works amazingly well! Our house doesn't stink!
Just discovered your channel while researching composting toilet options, inexp0. As an added bonus, I see the homemade camper in the closing... We've converted a cargo trailer in the beginning back in 2009 as tent camping became less desirable at our ages! Hubs made a homemade truck camper, converted an ambulance, a uhaul moving truck, remodeled a 19 ft and 28 ft travel trailers, most recently buying an older class A. Now to construct compost option...
Very awesome! We love our cargo. We’ve talked about doing a van, but I’m really kind of partial to the cargo. So glad you found us! Good luck in your quest for composting ideas.
Thank you for posting because I was researching kitty litter and it cost more that 40 pound bag. I like the fact that I can line my rv toilet with a bag and use that with the pellets and the pellets control the odor. Then I saw a comment that was in agreement with everything you said and I will get this instead of kitty litter. Thank you again.
Great tip. Following your instructions, I went to Tractor Supply and spent less than $8 dollars on a huge bag of pine animal bedding, and it worked great. It absorbs so well, I am thinking I might not have to divert the urine.
I don’t divert. That was a big no for me. The pine pellets work great and soak it up well. Odor stays down too. Frequency of use will determine how often you need to change it. Around day 4 has been my max length of time. So glad the tip has worked for you. I’m still using the pine pellets because I think they work awesome and huge plus that I don’t have to go in a jar 🤣
@@HappyPlaceCamping I think that traditional waste holding tanks is a dead technology, that most people will end up going the composting route, and the black water tanks will be used to hold more usable potable water. Pine bedding is a real game changer.
Hi, a tip would be to use three or four tablespoons of "Snow Powder" after each usage, this will take all the water (urine) and humidity from the no.2 and convert it into dust (kids call it snow), and then use the pine pellets or any other material for smell control. By turning the urine into a powder, it will control a lot of the smell, remember the basic issue with the smell is urine and no.2 together. Hope this tip works for you. Semper Fi
@@freedomexplorer360 Hi Regina YT removed my comments with links to Amazon. Snow Powder is a synthetic, child-safe powder when combined with water (any fluid), will flake out to snow look-alike consistency within seconds, kids use it to play, and when it dries out it reverts back to a powder. Search in YT for snow powder and you will see a few videos. This same material is been used as a "toilet" aid for refugees in camps as a safeguard for women so they don't have to leave their tents at night and go to a latrine and risk been rape. Hope this helped. Semper Fi
Thanks so much for this idea! I've just upgraded my porta potty to a similar setup for the vintage trailer I'm rebuilding and plan to live in, and I wanted a better solution to kitty litter. I also have compostable liners for the bucket. Feels good being a bit more eco-friendly. 🤠
I don't know that that's true, tho. I used a bamboo toothbrush said to be "degradable." Guess what? It's still fully intact in my front yard... See the E.T. Atari video game landfill dump doc. Those games from, what, 1980? Were still all right there, quite a few completely intact under 40 feet of trash. And that was mostly PAPER, btw. You'll also find intact. newspaper down there from as early as the 1940s. So, truth, that's mostly an expensive scam. I'd use it in an emergency, tho.
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823Composting requires the right ratio of materials, moisture, and air. Landfills tend to just dump everything all together, so it’s not going to break down optimally.
Have read that biodegradable bags disintegrate, they become small plastics that still pollute the environment....So perhaps something that sounds good, but turns out not to be?
I'm trying to prepare for emergencies and looking for how to do it. No one seems to think about the toilet if you don't have water. Thank you for sharing the video. I looked at our local Atwoods and the carry the same thing for about the same price. I am going to pick up a bag next paycheck. I have been working on food and water....and this is the next most important thing!
Live next to a very large lake :) that's our plan. We might have quite a few issues in this city, but potable, great water ain't one. :) You can flush any toilet with some grey water. Dishwater. Bathwater. Old fishtank dump water. Plants love it, too.
I have a small rescue and the pellets work great for all. And off the grid they work for composting toilets. And its better for animals as the kitty litter harms their kidneys if they lick their paws and it gets into their systemn.
Thank you. I'm 80 years old and my septic system needs a complete re-do... although the plumber keeps it working so far. But when the washing machine sends water up through the two toilets because the line is clogged I need YOUR backup plan. EXCEPT.. when the system "goes down" I can get all the water out of one of the toilets . . . line the toilet with two 13 gallon heavy duty plastic bags . . . and continue the process from there.
I really love the pine pellets and have had many people in the time this vid has been up tell me they do the same or tried the same and were happy with results. If you're going portable and composting, I think it's a great optiont to use the pine pellets. We got an even smaller potty that folds up for the use with the suv/tent overlanding thing. And still using pine pellets with it too :)
This was a Game Changer! I went straight to Tractor Supply and bought a LARGE BAG of these Pellets which is MUCH CHEAPER than kitty litter and there is no smell or dust and weighs much less. It does swell up for sure. I just tie the bag up, leave it in the 5 gal bucket until I dispose of it. FABULOUS!
So ironic the solution is pine pellets. I've been using this for cat litter instead of the clay because of no dust, (and my current cat deals with Upper Respiratory Infection and flares up with the clay litter). Will use this when I'm ready for nomad life.😁
Yeah we have a 5 gal bucket with a lid and for the camper I use the small kitty litter jug so it takes up less space. If we're going to be on an extended trip, we just take the 5 gal bucket too. Works out great :)
Very informative, thank you. One little thing, it would have been good if you could have done a live demonstration with water. A picture is worth a thousand words. No biggie.
This is a great video, so turns out we use the exact same pellets for our toilet, we also use it as kitty litter for our 4 cats and they also burn well in our little pellet campfire (bluesky). They are also pretty easy to find at TSC or other farm and fleet stores. - Kyle
I use pine for my cats and people ask "why doesn't your cat box stink?" I use a combo of the genetic pellets and the Okocat brand clumping litter. Pine doesn't let things smell as long as they are covered. I would suggest a scoop on top each time of use and less just sitting in bottom. Pine pellets are $7.99 for a 40lb bag. Okocat $19.99 for 19 lb box. I tried walnut shells, not as good.
I'm a little confused by your suggestion to use pine pellets. Pine pellets are what we state in the video that we are using. And we get them for 5.99. We used them on a long trip and the pine pellets worked very well by themselves. We're happy with the switch. Thanks for stopping by.
@@HappyPlaceCamping just verifying that the lack of smell is true and the cost of generic pellets is cheaper than any other brand. The fact that they puff up I'd pour a scoop on top rather than fill bucket.
@@CandycaneBeyond oooooh ok that makes much more sense to me. Haha sorry. Yes we did begin putting less in the bottom because of the poofing. Didn't want them taking over the camper 🤣
I use these pine pellets as kitty litter for the cats, mix in a little fresh step clay litter. It soaks up extra liquids and is very fragrant. It should last 2-3 days. After that, it smells like ammonia. The pine pellets are very light when used (but heavy in the bag not used). Just use like an inch to start, liquid expands it dramatically and turns it to sawdust. The fresh step clay litter is a little expensive but one of the lightest let's and the perfume helps with the outdoor. you only need to add a little bit.
I use pine pellets only (no clay or crystals) in the Arm & Hammer sifting litter box and it works awesome! I have one cat and one $6 bag of pellets lasted five months! Best part is there is absolutely no smell!
@@HappyPlaceCamping I use them as plant mulch. They absorb next to no water. They don't do anything for moths tho (like dog food/clothing moths). You'd need that Hot Shot spray from Home Depot. 1 can sprays the 900 sf apt maybe 3x. Put everything you or pets eat off of away, covered with newspaper or upside down. Cover fishtanks completely with newspaper. Start from far side of the house and close up each room as you back out to the door, herding all other pets out the door as you go. Anything small, especially birds, should be moved out, I'd think. I only have dogs and fish. Never, ever leave dog food bags/treats/bones or the boxes they're shipped in, in the house. They go immediately in a container or in the fridge. Or both. Of everything, moths are the WORST to get rid of. Roach motel type things DON'T WORK at my house. Hot Shot was the only thing that works.
I've been using the horse pellets for over a year now and it is the best option for our needs. It doesn't stink immediately and u can use it several times and it's biodegradable. We get ours at tractor supply and they are only like 6$
It has been working great. I need to do an update video to let everyone know what we've learned and how it's all working. Thanks so much for watching!! :)
I have seen your video. And I have no doubt that works great, but I didn't want to do the whole separation thing. I just want to sit and go and dump once later. Now if we were full time, that might be different. Thanks so much for watching 😊
thnx for the video. now that I finally got my van. this the kinda thing I need to know for my campervan conversion. what toilet to get n how to manage it is the #1 on my list.
Great vid! It's been 2 years since i last watched this video, and I'm still using pine pellets. I first used them for my bedside commode. Then, last year, i took a 6 month road trip in my converted DGC camper across the US. And I gotta say, this method never failed me! My only drawback was that i didn't have space to store my TS 40-pound bag, so i ran out of the supply i packed. However, while on the road, i found that i didn't have any problem finding the 20 lb or less bags of the "Feline Pine" brand in Petco and Petsmart. Though more expensive than the TS brand, it was still worth the cost for me to keep the odor away and have the ease of disposal that this method offers. Recently, i ordered a product called LaSyl. it is supposed to be a super absorbent powder. I will experiment with that at home and see how that works out. Hope it checkout because it would take up so much less space. I would literally be able to carry a years supply without any issues. But, if it doesn't work out, i always have my trusted pine pellets😁.
Awesome! So glad you’ve had a good experience using the pellets. It is handy that they can be purchased pretty much anywhere. Definitely cheaper, I’m sure, at farm stores. But still nice that they’re available in other stores too. We’re around 4 years using the pellets and still use them to this day 😁. Thanks for coming back and updating us on how they’ve worked for you.
I'd go with a jar and dump it once I got to indoor plumbing. Jmo. Pickle jars are just about the right size, and even women shouldn't need any special pee "scoop" to get it in there.
This will be fantastic! We have one of these stores in town. I have been using a gelling agent, and it stinks. Plan on picking up a bag when I buy the woodpeckers their suet!
Hello Felicity Jessie and Darbi nice to see you all again. I hate using kitty litter it gets under my nails lol. I really like the info but not the getting older part. We hope your tomorrow is better than today was.
We've been using this in our bucket toilet and in our kitty's litter for years...used to use sawdust, but this is more compact to carry and have on hand.
Yes, Yes, Yes, all I use for my cats, and no order up to 7 to 9 day , I do scoop solids after they have harden , much easier that way, the pellets pulls all the moister out of the solid or liquid poo (when you have a bad day)
Thanks so much for the tip. Went out and grabbed a bag the next day. No smell, no leaky bag, and didn’t have to use a lot of it. So ok, I change out my bag every day because I can’t deal so yes I’m a weirdo. I was playing with essential oils for odor masking, now I don’t have to! Yip! 🙏🏽✌🏽💖
I find that poo pourri stuff works, but the smell can be VERY strong. Just use the tiniest bit. Keep it upright and well wrapped in plastic, because some things tend to escape their containers and I still haven't figured out how. Like Tire Wet for the sidewalls. Had a full bottle undisturbed and upright. Not anymore.
the carbon in the wood attracts the nitrogen in the urine and binds to it , keeping the nitrogen from degrading into ammonia ,thus keeping the smell down
I know I watched this before. However we are building out a composting toilet for our rig now. Thanks for sharing some great information on pine bedding.
@Happy Place Camping We are hoping to get back into YT soon. However, it will be different content since we are not traveling full-time now. Do you use this same system for your toilet?
Hmmm not sure I’d do that with pine pellets as they expand when in contact with liquid. Plus they would soak up the treatment liquid and not have any absorbency left for urine. That’s what makes using them so great. Can go both 1 and 2 and not have to use a diverter. #2 can be covered with existing pellets or more added on top or even scooped out and disposed of if desired.
My last trip I just used dirt from the supermarket. Before I used to mix it with my wood pellets that I also use for my heating system. And with pellets definitely smells a lot less.
Cool stuff. Hey when it comes to the potty you have to do what you have to do. Have y'all looked at composting toilets? If you do look at the Airhead. They last a long time for the number 2's and you get a good amount on the number 1's. Great share.
Had to see what all the fuss was about. I use my potty only after dark. But I empty every morning. I use copious amount of toilet paper. In fact I throw on any paper napkins, paper towels or tissue I've gone through during the day to absorb the contents. I might have to try the pine pellets, so I can boondock for more than a night. Good video.
Haha, right! I don't get it!! I don't think you'll be disappointed in the pine pellets. I went four days on it last time we went out. I was pushing on purpose to see how long I could go. I think maybe I could have gone one more day, but didn't want it to backfire on me. So went ahead and changed it out. Also, time frame will depend how much it's used. Someone that doesn't go real often could probably go much, much longer.
I have a bucket toilet for emergency prep. Where I live there is a high potential for natural disasters to disrupt power and water service every few years. Using this method let's us conserve water (rather than filling the bathtub and using a pitcher to flush a regular toilet). 👍
Vault toilets are definitely not my favorite either. They’re usually smelly and dirty or full of creatures lol. I do hope you find what works for you. We still use pine pellets. And I’m still happy with them.
Oh I know what you mean. That's the main reason I wanted a potty. That middle of the night going is not something I want to do outside or have to walk to lol.
Oh my goodness... I just started using a bucket in my camper and was using kitty litter for the first time and wasn't sure what I thought of it... After seeing this video... This is a much better choice! Thank you so much! I will be camping at a state park soon and this is a great answer to my problem. 👍👍👍👍👍😁
We have been very happy with the results of using the pine pellets and have a few friends who use it too and like them. Hope it works just as well for you. Thank you so much for watching!
Hello, friend. May I make a suggestion? For your liquids, it will pretty much eliminate smell if you use a formaldehyde free, more natural black water tank treatment. I lived in a camper one summer and just used a Porta potty for liquids and emptied it about once every 2 weeks. Each time I emptied it, I added a teaspoon of Happy Camper powdered waste treatment into the empty 5 gallon waste collection. Directions say to use more, but that's for large black tanks. Anyways, my Porta potty was outside in a shower tent and even on really hot days, I couldn't smell the urine. So whether Porta potty or compost toilet liquids, this works great! Not sure for solids in a collection compost container. I think an occaisional light sprinkle is worth trying, though. You can also use the compost toilet vent fan Thanks for doing so many awesome videos! Cheers! 😊
I will have to try this. Used coffee grounds work well for #2 oder control, its free and we drink lots of coffee so we have lots of grounds, but not having to divert is HUGE.
Oh interesting about the coffee grounds. I hadn’t heard that one before. Still using the pine pellet to this day and am very satisfied with it. Not diverting was my major reasoning behind this.
So we have a black tank- but because we are in Canada- and only escaping December 20th (cold here) now everything is winterized- So I thank you for this and the expandable warning! We are using camping poop bags and will add the pellets to our “set-up”
Awesome! Hope they work great for you. We've had many tell us they started using them and have loved how they work. Thanks for watching and commenting. :)
Great video and an awesome tip! We've tried the kitty litter...but the odor of the litter alone is very unpleasant. The pine pellets seem like a great option! We have a local feed store, so we will definitely try this. Congrats on 10k views, way to go my friends! -Jody
And you have to use a lot of clay litter in order for it to do it's job, at least with the amount that we typically pee. I find I can use less of the pine pellets.
Thank you for posting your video for a cheap and EFFECTIVE Solution. As a male, I believe it is easier for me to separate #1 from #2 while sitting there by using a urinal, so the bag will be a little bit more "solid" and should be less stinky since #1 is what gives #2 a worse smell.
@@HappyPlaceCamping What is the longest stretch in days you've used it since without changing the bag? OR how long do you think you could use it for until it is time to change it? I would, of course be very careful in not using a lot of the pellets to prevent overflow! I would also use one of those 5 gallon buckets with a Luggable Loo. I am amazed at the lack of smell and the fact that you are not using ventilation to 'aerate' the poop.
@@udmbfckx2916 Max we've gone is 3 days. It would possibly go longer, but it gets pretty heavy. We generally use it more for just urinating. However, if we do have to use it for the solid, we take a little pellets and cover it and then dump as soon as the opportunity arises. Honestly, the urine is the worse culprit in making an odor. And we had no issues at all with that in the 3 days that we didn't change it. The only issue was the weight of the bag lol.
I use the pine pellets snd it’s amazing. I have used it for bowel movement that I had to go in the middle of the night. And I keep my potty inside my tent since it’s only me snd my kitty in my tent most of the time. I have a sensitive nose snd I smelled nothing. I’m pretty impressed. I got the feline Pine pellets at petco. But you can get the pellet bedding at Lowe’s or Home Depot. It’s the exact same thing. I put my cats business in the same bucket when I clean her box. I add a cup of pellets here snd there as needed. But after a couple days I empty it cuz I don’t want it getting too full. But honestly no smell. I asked my friends snd they said the same thing. Saves my bacon when camping and I can camp in any spot without worry of being too far from the restrooms. Therefore I can get the quietest spots. Yes 👍🏼
Totally agree 100%. We've had the same amazing experience with it. I gotta say I didn't know they made specific feline pet pellets. Do you know the difference in the products? Just curious. I don't have a kitty cat, but I do have friends with them. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!
Great idea! Thanks for the advice. I got a bucket toilet for when I had to drive my minivan to Florida from South Carolina during the worst of the COVID wave last year. I didn't want to have to go inside any public businesses to use the bathroom. I used bags and kitty litter, which worked fine for just the day I had to be driving. I'll keep this tip in mind if I need to use a bucket toilet again, or for a longer span of time.
Thanks for this! Im heading out in my van this weekend for the next 9 months and am staring at the cat litter choices in walmart. 😅 Gonna try this out instead!
Yes! Try this for sure. So much better than kitty litter. We’re still using pine pellets and couldn’t be happier that we made the switch! Have an amazing and safe time on your trip!
I used to use horse bedding pellets (very similar to yours, but sometimes CHEAPER) for my cat litter back when I had sweepable, moppable floors. I still would use it if I was not able to get cat litter at some time. REALLY cut odor well, but not as convenient as scoopable.
I'm thinking about using pine pellets in my potty tent for #1 & #2, i wonder if i should start with just a scoop at the bottom of the bag and then add a small scoop as the "flush" after each use. Thanks for the tip on heftys.
For sure start with some in the bottom of your potty. I generally add in around inch and half deep to 2 inches deep. And definitely cover up #2 with either new pellets or existing fluffy pellets that are already in your potty. A cat litter scoop works quite well.
I wish I could take credit, but a friend told us. And I'm so glad they did. It's been so much better than using litter. I notice the sticker board makes it in the shots here and there. Thanks for watching 😊
When boondocking I have a regular porta potty and what I did was take a gallon size zip bag put it into the potty position front to back. Put in some kitty litter and tossed it into large trash bag outside for every use. No smell at all. In hindsight could have used the small trash bag bags but with zip lock there were no leaks.
I was thinking about using pellets or something different in our liter box. I am also going to but a bag like that in my liter box. great ideas! Thanks for sharing this! great Ideas!

I miss the Tractor Supply stores! We don't have them in Canada. I use something like these pellets in Gracie's litter box and really like them as there is less tracking too. I guess when I use my potty as a composter, I can just share the litter with Gracie! I have found the small animal bedding works pretty good, but is a bit messy with bits falling on the floor when i refill the potty. Thanks for this very helpful info, Felicity and Jessie!
I wasn't sure if cedar shavings would be absorbant enough. I love that the pellets absorb liquid and odor so I don't need a separate container for #1 lol.
I have been using "Wheat Mill Run" from Big R for about twenty years for my cats and I can tell you it is better yet than the pine pellets! Yes we have used for #2. I have a kitty litter scoop that I use to cover it with either pellets in the potty or fresh pellets. This helps to keep the odor down. We’re still very happy with the pellets. Getting close to 5 years now. Haven’t regretted the switch.
Exactly! We’re on the same wavelength. Thanks so much for your comment.
Have you thought about putting the top of the plastic bag over your toilet seat instead of under it? - don't have to clean the seat often and if you miss whilst doing #2, the bag catches it all.
Interesting. Had never thought about it. Nice tip.
Thank you so much! We've been without toilets for about a week due to a burst pipe. We're using a bedside commode for disabled people, paired with a thick plastic contractor bag and a 5 gallon bucket. This works amazingly well! Our house doesn't stink!
That's awesome!! Love to hear that it's working for you.
I’ve used the pine pellets as well. They work great and really take care of the odor.
Toilet videos, nobody wants to talk about them.... everybody needs one.....LOL. That's a good tip
Haha right! Gotta be done. Thanks for watching 😊
Thank You for a great tip, for using the pine chips, Enjoy Your travels, GOD Bless You all.
You’re very welcome. Thank you for watching 😊
I think you'll be very happy with it. I know we are!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting. 😊
Oh my gosh! This sounds like exactly what we have been looking to find. We can’t wait to see if it works for us as well! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome! We've been super happy with this switch. Hope it works for you, as well.
Semper Fi
Thanks for the tip and thanks for watching 😊
what is snow powder? Kitty litter?
@@freedomexplorer360 Hi Regina YT removed my comments with links to Amazon. Snow Powder is a synthetic, child-safe powder when combined with water (any fluid), will flake out to snow look-alike consistency within seconds, kids use it to play, and when it dries out it reverts back to a powder. Search in YT for snow powder and you will see a few videos. This same material is been used as a "toilet" aid for refugees in camps as a safeguard for women so they don't have to leave their tents at night and go to a latrine and risk been rape. Hope this helped.

@@freedomexplorer360 Hi, no you can find it in amazon just like that "snow powder".
Thanks so much for this idea! I've just upgraded my porta potty to a similar setup for the vintage trailer I'm rebuilding and plan to live in, and I wanted a better solution to kitty litter. I also have compostable liners for the bucket. Feels good being a bit more eco-friendly. 🤠
So glad it was helpful for you. We've been pleased with using the pine pellets. Hope it works for you too. Thanks so much for watching 😊
Yes, pine pellets rock!!! I just discovered these for my Luggable Loo.
Right! They work very well!
Hope that it works for you. We've been doing this for close to a year now and still are very pleased how it works. Thanks so much for watching.
Live next to a very large lake :) that's our plan. We might have quite a few issues in this city, but potable, great water ain't one. :)
You can flush any toilet with some grey water. Dishwater. Bathwater. Old fishtank dump water. Plants love it, too.
We use the Pine Pellets for kitty litter. It works great for all.
Totally agree. We've been super happy with using them. Thanks so much for watching 😊
That’s great that this works for you. I sure hope you can get a permanent fix on your system soon. That would be no fun to deal with.
Thank You!!! I don't RV yet but this is one of the biggest concerns
FABULOUS!
Right! It works very well. Been around 5 years and we’re still using this method.
So ironic the solution is pine pellets. I've been using this for cat litter instead of the clay because of no dust, (and my current cat deals with Upper Respiratory Infection and flares up with the clay litter). Will use this when I'm ready for nomad life.😁
We're happy with the pine pellets. We've noticed several use them for their kitties. Love things with dual purpose. Thanks for watching 🙂
One bag fills two of the square kitty litter buckets, which makes it really convenient for storage.
No biggie.
Thanks for watching
This is a great video, so turns out we use the exact same pellets for our toilet, we also use it as kitty litter for our 4 cats and they also burn well in our little pellet campfire (bluesky). They are also pretty easy to find at TSC or other farm and fleet stores. - Kyle
Awesome! We’ve been very happy with using the pellets. They’re pretty simple to take along when we overland too 😊
I use pine for my cats and people ask "why doesn't your cat box stink?" I use a combo of the genetic pellets and the Okocat brand clumping litter.
I use wood pellets, similar
I use these pine pellets as kitty litter for the cats, mix in a little fresh step clay litter. It soaks up extra liquids and is very fragrant. It should last 2-3 days. After that, it smells like ammonia. The pine pellets are very light when used (but heavy in the bag not used). Just use like an inch to start, liquid expands it dramatically and turns it to sawdust. The fresh step clay litter is a little expensive but one of the lightest let's and the perfume helps with the outdoor. you only need to add a little bit.
Yes the pellets have been working amazing. Good tip on the fresh step kitty litter. Thank you so much for watching and leaving us a great comment.
I use pine pellets only (no clay or crystals) in the Arm & Hammer sifting litter box and it works awesome! I have one cat and one $6 bag of pellets lasted five months! Best part is there is absolutely no smell!
We started to use cedar wood chips from tractor supply they worked well in our off grid Rv! Thanks for sharing! God bless!
Tony n Lee Ann
We have a friend that uses cedar chips. But not sure how well it would absorb liquid. So we went with pellets. Thanks for watching.
@@HappyPlaceCamping it worked pretty good for us! But I like the pellets they seem more absorbent than the chips! God bless guys!
Tony n Lee Ann
These pine pellets bedding are amazing. I've heard Horse pellets are amazing too. Probably similar stuff. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah I would think same thing. The last bag we got had a horse on it. We've been very happy with the results. Thanks so much for watching.
I've been using the horse pellets for over a year now and it is the best option for our needs. It doesn't stink immediately and u can use it several times and it's biodegradable. We get ours at tractor supply and they are only like 6$
Sounds like a good idea and pine should camouflage a lot of scent glad to hear it’s working out for you.
It has been working great. I need to do an update video to let everyone know what we've learned and how it's all working. Thanks so much for watching!! :)
This makes so much sense. We have used pellets as kitty litter for years. Thanks for opening our eyes.
Yay! We’ve been doing this for over 2 years now and still love the results. Thanks so much for watching! 🙂
Wow this is gonna really make a difference for us! Thanks so much for sharing it! ☺️
Awesome! Glad it will help. It’s been about 4 years and I’m still using the pine pellets. Love how well they work 😁
Great Video, I haven't tried this. I use coconut core for the #2, no smell but I have a diverter for urine.
I have seen your video. And I have no doubt that works great, but I didn't want to do the whole separation thing. I just want to sit and go and dump once later. Now if we were full time, that might be different. Thanks so much for watching 😊
I have used pine pellets with success. However, I found that Lasyl powder is less bulky and holds more liquid.
Oh. I’ve not heard of that.
So awesome for you guys to see your video hit over 100K. Never say it doesn't pay to poo! Haha. Congrats Felix and Jessie! Well deserved!
Right! Guess we should have known it would be a popular subject. I mean everyone has to do it lol

Thay is exactly what I have been planning to use for our composting toilet. Good info.
We're happy with our decision of switching to pellets. It's been less hassle and no odor! It's been so great! Thanks so much for watching!
thnx for the video. now that I finally got my van. this the kinda thing I need to know for my campervan conversion. what toilet to get n how to manage it is the #1 on my list.
Oh so glad it was helpful. Congratulations on getting a van. Hope you have many great adventures in your conversion 😊
Great idea! Sounds like it works a lot better than kitty litter. 😊
It really does. Super glad we made the switch.
I use the same system I like peat moss in the bucket its cheap and easy to gets well as smelling good, I'll never use a black tank again. Great info
We've never had a black tank, but can't imagine it being easier than this method.
Peat is a non renewable resource. Have you considered coconut coir? Gardeners use it as an alternative to peat moss.
Would LOVE to know your reviews and thoughts on using the LaSyl. (Space to store the TS pine pellets is a concern for us, too.) Thanks in advance!
Helpful! We try to only use #1 but definitely good to have for emergency situation😁
It's great for boondocking. With the pine pellets we've gone 3 days with no odors. Works very well :)
Awesome. We still use the pine pellets and are still happy with them. Hope they work for you too!
Hello Felicity Jessie and Darbi nice to see you all again. I hate using kitty litter it gets under my nails lol. I really like the info but not the getting older part. We hope your tomorrow is better than today was.
Haha. Getting older is a bit of a bummer. Just a tip, you're not supposed to scratch in the kitty litter lol.
@@HappyPlaceCamping Well the cats do it.
We've been using this in our bucket toilet and in our kitty's litter for years...used to use sawdust, but this is more compact to carry and have on hand.

Yes, Yes, Yes, all I use for my cats, and no order up to 7 to 9 day , I do scoop solids after they have harden , much easier that way, the pellets pulls all the moister out of the solid or liquid poo (when you have a bad day)
Yes. Switching to pine pellets was the best thing we could have done. Works amazingly well!!
Yip! 🙏🏽✌🏽💖
Awesome! I love that it's working great for you. And hey, nothing wrong with changing it every day if you want. 😊
So the pine pellets don't have a smell at all?
I find that poo pourri stuff works, but the smell can be VERY strong. Just use the tiniest bit. Keep it upright and well wrapped in plastic, because some things tend to escape their containers and I still haven't figured out how. Like Tire Wet for the sidewalls. Had a full bottle undisturbed and upright. Not anymore.
Yep, pine pellots... sure does the job... oder control is great.. i dug a pit in the pine forest wala !
It really does work very well. Going on 5 years and still using this method. Thanks so much for watching.
the carbon in the wood attracts the nitrogen in the urine and binds to it , keeping the nitrogen from degrading into ammonia ,thus keeping the smell down

Yes! Just a bit in the bottom works great. Thanks so much for watching 😊
What's the composting part, tho?
Great video, ive seen other videos where they recommended using Tank Treatment Liquid after doing #2
O wow! Excellent idea of using pine pellets instead of kitty litter.. ❤❤
It works super great!
My last trip I just used dirt from the supermarket. Before I used to mix it with my wood pellets that I also use for my heating system. And with pellets definitely smells a lot less.
Interesting. Never really thought to use soil. Thanks for sharing that bit of info.
Cool stuff. Hey when it comes to the potty you have to do what you have to do. Have y'all looked at composting toilets? If you do look at the Airhead. They last a long time for the number 2's and you get a good amount on the number 1's. Great share.
Well unfortunately, we don't have room for one at this time. But if we ever go bigger, we may consider that.
Glad to know this! We will use this for our boondocking bucket 😁
It works so great!! Still smells of pine after 2-3 days, but does get a bit on the heavy side lol.
Pee is sterile. So you could use a camping pee rag if you ran out.
I have a bucket toilet for emergency prep. Where I live there is a high potential for natural disasters to disrupt power and water service every few years. Using this method let's us conserve water (rather than filling the bathtub and using a pitcher to flush a regular toilet). 👍
Definitely! A great reason to have one! Thanks so much for watching and sharing 😊
What a great idea, best Idea that I have heard so far.
Thank you. We still use pine pellets and are quite happy with them. 🙂

You can also use the compost toilet vent fan
Thanks for doing so many awesome videos! Cheers! 😊

Great video and an awesome tip! We've tried the kitty litter...but the odor of the litter alone is very unpleasant. The pine pellets seem like a great option! We have a local feed store, so we will definitely try this. Congrats on 10k views, way to go my friends! -Jody
Yes I agree. I don't like the smell of the litter either. The pine pellets are quite a pleasant change. Hope it works out for you.
And you have to use a lot of clay litter in order for it to do it's job, at least with the amount that we typically pee. I find I can use less of the pine pellets.
Thank u for putting this information it sounds like a great idea , I will try it once I get my camper build & go in our first adventure
You’re very welcome!! We’re still using this method and haven’t been disappointed yet! Thanks so much for watching and commenting 🙂
Thank you for the toilet tip!! We use black colored bags. Black hides the mess inside.
Nice tip! Thanks 😁
Correct! Though, we've not had any issues with odor since switching to the pine pellets. They're pretty darn amazing. Thanks so much for watching.
You're welcome. Hope it works for you. We've had great luck with it, as well as have many others.
The pine pellets would probably save you some money. A little goes a lot further than the same amount of clay litter.
Pine pellets and wood shavings work great, I add a sprinkle of lime with each use.
Oh that's interesting to add some lime. Thanks so much for watching.
Why add lime?
I used to use horse bedding pellets (very similar to yours, but sometimes CHEAPER) for my cat litter back when I had sweepable, moppable floors. I still would use it if I was not able to get cat litter at some time. REALLY cut odor well, but not as convenient as scoopable.
Yes! Works great for kitty litter. Have a friend that does that. Thanks so much for watching 😊
Super helpful for so many! Love seeing the RV stickers behind you lol.
That's a good idea. Thanks for sharing. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
I used to use the pellets for my cat's liter box👍👍👍👍👍
Yes! I’ve been told that works great.
I’m in Australia, we can’t widely find pine pellets here, so mixing baking soda with some kitty litter works for me.
Ah. Never thought about other countries not having access to pine pellets. You gotta use what you have access to. Thanks so much for watching.
I'm in Australia too, and I just googled it & found it is available here: eg proteq-equine-bedding, equinepurepellets.
Hi Away I How much baking soda with kitty litter please in Australia as well.
I was thinking about using pellets or something different in our liter box. I am also going to but a bag like that in my liter box. great ideas! Thanks for sharing this! great Ideas!
So glad you found the info useful. Thanks so much for watching 😊
Thanks for the info. I have a cassette toilet that arrived today, but not a lot of room in the van for that. Planned on putting it in the 2 horse trailer for poo and have a bucket inside for nightime tinkles.
That's a good idea. Thanks so much for watching.
🌼 I had to watch the infamous potty video and glad I did!!!
Stay safe!!!
🤣 Thanks so much for watching. This one isn't nearly as popular as the other potty video we have. People like potty talk 😂
@@HappyPlaceCamping 😂 yep we all got potty mouths an’ potty minds
@@veganvocalist4782 😂
Nice hack guys. Have a nice trip👍
Thanks so much for watching 😊
I’m more concerned with storing the new pellets than the used pellets. Yet, small bags usually cost more per weight, plus time finding more.
We have a 5 gallon bucket we take with us that seals tight for the storage. We put them in the truck for traveling. Thanks for watching.
I would decant a big bag of pellets into small ziplock bags.
@@branchsnapper2228 Yes because you can always find nooks and crannies here or there
I wonder how it would work to vaccum seal some large bags to compact them further.
Yes we do ... at least in Ontario...
Check Peavey Mart for western Canada
I have been using "Wheat Mill Run" from Big R for about twenty years for my cats and I can tell you it is better yet than the pine pellets! It clumps and totally control odors, you can scoop it and the rest stays totally clean so the waste will be even less, and it can also be flushed! It is about 15$ for a huge 40# bag!
Interesting! I’ve not heard of this. I may look into it. Not sure what Big R is, but maybe one of our farm stores will have it.
@@HappyPlaceCamping It is made by Manna Pro, it is high protein calf food, bran really. BigR is a competitor of Tractor Supply in the Western US at least. Take care! 🍀
@@eleonorabartoli2225 Ah ok. Thank you :)
hi , cedar chps work great too , btw 5 gallon bucket with a GAMA lid is great . and on amazon has 13 gallon composting/bio degreatable bags , works great . and is direct bury able
Have a friend that was/is using cedar chips. I've heard it works well too. I'll look into those bags. Thank you :)
I’m going to try that. Thanks for the information
You bet. We used the pine pellets on our 2 week trip and they worked great!
Sawdust works the best. Use the bag and cover over any kind of waste with the sawdust. No smell, no flies and no mess.
Good tip. Will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you.
Congrats on hitting 10,000 views on this video! WooHoo Felicity and Jessie!
Thank you very much. It's been fun watching the views climb.
peat moss works too
Yes, I’ve heard that works well
