I am so glad to see a camping toilet intentionally designed and tested by a woman! The fact that you are real in your explanations of your configuration show that you have given this alot of thought! I really like this setup, and would probably just add a drawer pull so that you do not have to possibly touch the seat to slide the toilet in and out. Great design! 👍🏽

OMG!! I know this video is a year old and you may not ever see this but THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I lived in my van for most of 5 years with just a bucket (no sense of smell and no social life) that I had to find discrete ways to empty. I knew there had to be a better way. I looked into composting toilets and, like you, said nope. The whole issue with separation spacing has always stopped me from building my own. Now I'm on the verge of moving back into my van and this is a life changer!

Been living in my van for almost 5 years.
Prior to full time vanliving I camped pretty much in every type of RV situation but had always loved the simplicity of my tent ⛺️ and or sleeping in my SUV.
I have a portable separating toilet that I use similarly to your biffy.
However mine is awkward to set up each time I need it.
I only use it for #2 although the separation of liquid from solids is a must in my experience.
A small funn type design for women "Sheewee" kinda device works well. I use a Nalgene bottle to catch the urine. It is so simple to empty, easy, sanitary no muss no fuss.
The Nalgene bottle and the pee funnel take up so little space. I clean both every use. Fast and easy.
I have made a study of various portable composting biffy's.
    Your's is perfect.
There are few on the market that might suit my needs but $$$ cost prohibitive.
I want to be able to quickly clean it and tuck it away, easily. Also I want it to be ready to use without alot of prep time.
    Great video. Thanks for sharing.

Genius!! Thank you. I have been working on my minivan for months and today I went for a test run simply to a pleasant local park,, ,read, took a nap to test out my bed and came home. I had put in a bedside gramma blue porta potty with arms to help me with my bad knees but this video helped me with dealing with the liquid and solids. I lowered the potty to its lowest point since I have a low top Sienna Toyota and covered it with a twin black sheet to camouflage it and put a tray to use it as a bedside table. I will continue trial runs until I am satisfied with its configuration. I bought a yard reclining chaise lounge from Big Lots and added padding for the bed. I sleep in a recliner since I have acid reflux and rarely have a problem since i started doing that. Love your frank, no nonsense approach. MANY THANKS.

First of all thank you. Excellent presentation. Have been using pretty much the same set up for several years. With a few differences. I am an old guy so sitting down and getting up can be kind of tricky. Built mine with legs to have more height. Rig started out as a cube van so have more room. Use a bigger stainless metal funnel to deal with splashing. I know gross, but part of life for us old farts. Pounded the funnel into the correct shape to fit my set up and rigged up a strap system to attach it. Also I used an elongated oval toilet seat. Just wait. When one gets older and puts on a bit of weight the oval toilet seat is the only way to go. I use cedar mulch for poop topping. Has good absorption and eliminated using any nasty smell cover uppers, inexpensive, and available at any home improvement and/or garden store. Usually comes in large bags so will have to figure on storage. That is when some family my be of good use? Lastly for number one I use a one gallon glass container that happened to come with a plastic duo handle attached around the lid opening. Easy in and out. And lastly, congratulations to your parents for raising such an insightful, courageous daughter.

Everyone has a different solution. Mine is a 5 gallon bucket, biodegradable bags, and pine pellets. The reason that so many people use a 5 gallon buckets is because they can typically hold the weight of a person, so building a box isn't necessary. As for the "bag of liquid" problem, I use pine pellets from Tractor Supply in my toilet. They do double duty: 1) They soak up the liquid and eliminate the odor, and 2) They cover the solids, thereby preventing the odor from escaping. I tend to change bags whenever I do number 2, and dispose of the bag as soon as is convenient.

Cat litter works well for soaking up the urine in your bucket. As a trucker that is what I use which also helps with odor until I can stop to discard. As for poo I try to use public bathrooms unless I can’t get to one in time. Either way the cat litter helps. Love your potty set up! 🌼

No need to worry about water or chemicals to put in the water to keep the smells at bay. i currently have a cassette toilet that I normally don't put the toilet paper in it because of breakdown issues of the paper (unless its for #2). Thanks for sharing this, wish I would have seen it 2 yrs ago. I saw a lady build a composting toilet for her van. She ordered a fiberglass one piece urine diverter on line. It is all together and has the hole for solids in back with diverter in front. I ordered this, but what I failed to understand was the conversion rate as it came from England. I thought it was $120 and it took 3 months to get here. But it really cost about $170. Plus no returns. I tried using a funnel and it didn't work, but a canning funnel is perfect. I do have this set up with a wooden hinged top to make a bench, but really like how yours takes up less space.

They are not building a Flippin VIKING ORBITER. Your deadpan, witty delivery just cracks me up. Chinese companies replicate German engineered Diesel Heaters like an ESPAR for $200. AIRHEAD & NATURE'S HEAD are still selling fancy $1,000 plastic Poo & Pee buckets and have cornered the market. I'm still researching my options. One is a square bin, we used have two of them. The one I have left we've had for about 45 years.
I will be using compostable bags.
I've seen others making their own diverters from buckets, all sorts of things. One had a small funnel in his jug, that startled me. But he had a conventionally large one as well. I'm wondering whether a well cut two liter ice-cream container might do the job, perhaps with that supplementary funnel. A 4l bottle with a lid on, even a lid with a funnel, isn't going to overflow easily.
There's one of me, a bloke's design is all I need.

You can also purchase a urine diverter that’s a bit larger from DIY Composting Toilets. We used it in our DIY composting toilet. Works great for me and my husband. And it is made in the USA!

Same conclusion I came to, $1k was too much for a toilet. I went with the Johnny Composter setup for $150 on my boat. I use Compost Sure, wood cat litter and pine shavings as my cover material. Been using it all summer, works great and smells better than the marine head.

Sweet vid. I was contemplating toilet options for myself in a headroom limited teardrop or squaredrop...I can't have a 22 inch tall toilet and still have enough room to sit. Your video really helped solidify some thoughts and ideas I was stewing on. I also love the stowaway design. THANK YOU!

What a great plan! My husband is about to build one for our shuttle bus/RV and he's going to use your plan! Thank you so much. This is the first plan that we've seen that we think will work for us.

Thanks for such detailed toilet build. I've seen so many toilet builds and not wanting to spend $$$ on a composting toilet I'm going to make a toilet build my winter project. I've traveled in my 2011 Escape since I bought it, sleeping in a tent and then the back of the Escape which worked out great and still have it. I did purchased a Ford Connect and am working on it for longer travel plans and being self contained. The toilet was my main concern. Thanks again!

Lots of good ideas here. I might build one for my small sailboat. Maybe put some caulking between the seat and the platform? I think the key to not having smells (if you're not dumping the contents frequently) is to have a small 12 V fan constantly venting outside (to dry the feces, which will then not smell). Marine chandleries sell a nice little solar vent with a small fan that would work well for this purpose.

almost any tiny computer fan would do. The key is finding a quiet one as the small ones usually have the highest whine.
