Some of these manufacturers forgot one important aspect of these products - size and portability. Some of these products, even if nice, they are like taking the toilet from your home and bringing with you on the camping trip. Besides that - thank you for the very nice overview/review of these products.
I got a medium size Trelino with a wooden lid held in place by magnets instead of the soft close plastic lid. The lid does not bounce off when I am driving. The lid is completely removed when the toilet is used. The wooden lid allows the Trelino to also be a small table or foot stool. I got this when I was still tent camping, but planning to buy a van for a DIY camper. The Trelino fit under my camping cot and is currently kept under the bed I built for my van. The medium size Trelino is about the size of a milk crate or bankers box and it is a bit taller than the small size without being too tall to tuck under the bed. It is comfortable to use. As a female, I have had no issues with where to sit for proper separation of pee and poo. I did make a small modification to the pee jug to help make it easier to completely empty. I cut a 5/8 inch hole in one of the upper corners of the jug and used a rubber stopper to seal it. When I empty it, I remove the stopper and pour through the hole like a tea kettle. because the hole is in a corner, it is easier to completely empty the jug than it was when I removed the lid from the center of the top of the box-shaped jug. The stopper was actually sold as an accessory by Trelino, probably to plug the urine hole in the separator, but I never used it for that. I empty my Trelino after one or two days of use. It is mostly used after dark or before sunrise. It is never very full when I empty it, but I empty it frequently so it won't become full.
Your potty vocabulary is top-notch. Love all the euphemisms haha. Made me laugh out loud while learning about these essential van life companions. Also, would you guys ever do a video about van security? I'd be interested in learning what you have learned over the years
I’m developing an off grid property & this video has really gone over all the option of which I am aware! Excellent explanation of each type & the options within each method!! Thank you for explaining this topic in an entertaining manner! I agree with the earlier comment that “ don’t crap in my air fryer” is the best line!
This is absolutely the most thorough discussion of toilet options on YT. But you left out arguably the best dry flush toilet- the Wrappon Trekker. It has Laveo's "flush it and forget" approach, but with more convenience and portability. It's like a one used bucket toilet that ties up the contents for you.
We've had the Laveo DryFlush for a few months now, and it's been a game changer for us. It's a good height, feels like a real toilet, and haven't had a problem disposing of the bag/cassette thing. In fact, you can put it in a regular garbage can. It's been a lot less of a hassle than anything else we've tried.
I never knew I could be so entertained by a toilet video. Very well done sir 🎉😂. I’m doing a Cargo trailer conversion and I’m considering two luggable loos surrounded by a wooden frame. This way there will be no danger of the milk and brownies sharing space 😆
Another CTC here and so far have only used 1 bucket for #1. I have thought about this idea too and wondered why more people don’t discuss this option. However with age / circumstances beyond some people’s control - a separator I think is the way to go at least on one of the 2 options just in case.😉 Example: 1 Trelino type and 1 bucket.
I can’t believe I just spent over an hour of my life watching this……..brilliant and thorough review of portable toilets! I have a VW camper and am looking to change up my Thetford 365 for something, less chemical and water dependent and also a bit less splashy when emptying. Being a lady of a certain age I use the loo a lot overnight and feel that a urine full indicator is a must have to avoid overspill. 💦 😮
Ben, great video! Nice job and thank you for including us. Can't wait to see it installed and get your honest feedback. You can remove the solids bin from the top you will just move (push) the trap door up with the bin or your hand. Best wishes!!
I have an air head for almost 2 years in a bus and I aam now in South Carolina. It is pretty easy to clean but I seems that is needs to be cleaned out every two or three weeks with full time usage ( 1 person). The biggest issue for me is bugs in the summer. I have tried different types of composting material, diatomaceous earth and gnatrol. Nothing seems to work. Looking for another option, maybe a smaller bin the needs to be emptied more often but is much easier to empty.
We have a natures head and we use it 80% of the time for both transactions. It is hard to clean. To many nooks and crannies. But it allows us to use the off grid cabin easily. But it does well with the composting and the urine bottle is large. Also when your taking out the urine bottle put the lid on it then it won’t splash out and we have a second bottle so we can change out when we have a full bottle. And you’re correct to say they could do better even if it’s making easier to clean the compositing compartment!
We just traveled for a month in a rented van with a traditional black tank system. We were curious what all the other options were. Thanks for putting this together. You make Sir John Harrington proud.
Im converting and eagle bus into a tiny, and im really trying to decide one if i want to deal with a black water tank. This video was super helpful, in showing my other options
I know propane systems can be dangerous if implemented incorrectly, but it seems like a simple one tank, one line, and one output "system" could be isolated and made relatively safe and easy to operate in a campervan. You cannot get anywhere close to the energy density of propane with batteries, and powering a closed off incinerating toilet with an external vent seems like the best practical use for it.
Been thinking of this company to build an upgrade van for me. The fact he knows all about toilets show how much experience he has accumulated in the RV world. I use a cassette toilet in a Solis and love it but it does have an odor from the chemical I use...
pricey indeed, but you'd need to try it. it is very well designed for ease of use and especially cleaning. I made a viewing slit to check the pee level
It is so great to have a detailed review of so many options all in one place. Your eclectic use of a wide range of euphemisms for potty items is histerical. Dealing with bathroom stuff is definitely my #1 concern for vanlife. I can't wait to see how toilet technology develops over the next decades until we are ready to get on the road.
I like the AirHead (not in the video, but similar) vs. the NaturesHead. The Airhead doesn't have two of the cons mentioned for the NH: The liquids bottle comes out without lifting the upper half. (it still would have the issue with spilling the bottle if it's too full or overfilled). The upper half comes off without clearance issues to a side or rear wall.
For pretty much my entire life, I've been what you call "an indoorsy" girl. I don't know what happened to me but I am now hoping to plan a 6 month van/rv trip all over North America. This video on toilets has been AMAZING :) Answered all my questions. I watched it yesterday and today my husband and I are watching it together. If that doesn't spell romance I don't know what does. Thank you!
I have the Trelino that you showed. It was slightly different but most cosmetic. It cost $525 and the small ones were about $325. 3 different heights available. I really like mine. For me, it is easier to use because it is taller. Very convenient. Even if the bottle would overflow, the basic unit would hold it in and could easily be rinsed out saving a disaster in your van. Totally worth every penny.
Tip for the Thetford toilets. There is special fluid for it that makes it not smell at all. (Thetford Aqua Kem Blue) Don't thin it with water. I have been camping for 10+ years and it was never nasty to empthy, just blue fluid. all the solids also desolve.
Thank you so much for all the info - I learned a lot. Something I really don't like, though, is all the plastic that's being put in the landfill. Yeah, I hate having to find a sewer for a holding tank, but at least there's not the plastic 😿
I used the Luggable Loo for many years in a trailer as a primary toilet for 1 and 2 with a bag and Poo powder, which turns everything to gel. Very happy with it, though with 2 people, it needs to be dumped pretty often. Hate the amount of plastic, but it was simple and worked well.
check out this new toilet with a liner that gets welded closed on each poop/pee, and adjustable length depending on size. Clesana C1. Each liner package is around 25€ and you can get roughly 30-40 uses out of 1 liner, depending on size of poop/pee.
Thanks for making this really useful and informative video. It helped me decide what would work best for me and saved lot of research time! I have only one comment which might improve your presentation. You look at all the relevant information except how easy the unit is to clean. I get that most men don't clean the toilet, but someone has to and you do not address this essential chore. Some regular toilets are much easier to clean than others, and I am sure this is also the case for van toilets. I was trying to figure out what cleaning the unit would be like, but it would be great if you actually address this in your comparison. Maybe add this in your next iteration! Thanks again for a really helpful video that is completely about informing your audience, not trying to sell me something! Bravo!
Thank you great job reviewing these ! Been using a cassette style in off grid cabin and as we get older we need to upgrade to a separator agitator style. The Ogo looks the most promising but I have to look into it further.
Really nice job on the video. A great place for people start. We have been camper vanning/RVing since the 60's and have had just about all of them. Our new one is a DIY urine separating and actively ventilated. As you pointed out they are pretty simple - buy the urine seperator and combine with a bucket, a bottle and a little carpentry and you are in business. Another nice feature of DIY is you can add features - ours has a magazine/map pocket, TP holder, and it has an upholstered top that serves as an extra seat. You can get some nice kits to DIY one from Germany.
I have the OGO Nomad toilet. I like that it's portable. Here in Australia they cost Aus$455 (US$306) so it's a lot for such a basic system. I've only used it a few times but so far so good. The small handle on the pee container makes emptying a bit awkward and I wish it had a removable bucket for the poop bag. I'm going to try to find one. But overall I'm really happy with it as it fits really well in my cupboard. No smell at all too.
Appreciate seeing many different toilet options in one stop. The Boxio you had seemed incomplete. I have also seen it with a hinged top, a screw-on lid for the urine bottle, a plug for the urine bottle to put in place during travel, a lid for the solids container, and the whole thing sat on a storage base. It was shipped with bags and a package of hemp litter.
All true comments about the Nature's Head in my experience. There is a need for improvement on the urine side. I like that you can take it outside and hose it down. Plus...the solids container holds a lot. I appreciate my flush toilet so much more, what a luxury!!
very good presentation thanks. You have cleared up the facts very well. I can now buy in conference. (OGO) Richard from Newcastle Australia. Thanks again.
brownies and lemonade LOL gotta luv euphemisms I went with Boxio the Ogo with no receptacle under bag creates issues not only holding but possibility of lemonade under the bag LOL..... I also bought the storage box for the Boxio which makes it the correct height for me and using the stopper the lid is no issue. I like the cushions they created to make it a seat in my campervan. Good reveiw . I thought about the Trellino but for the addtional cost was prohibitive. Thanks for the good review. All the female urinals to bottle are a pain and can be a mess. I do have a small LAOJU Emergency Urinal Shrinkable Pee Bottle 750ML Portable Potty Urinal Mobile Emergency Toilet for Outdoor Travel that sits in the door of my vehicle and it seems to be foolproof as a travel device.
Separating the liquid from the solid is a bad idea for the environment, because the only way to stabilize the nitrogen in the urine is the carbon. The urine in contact of air or water will bond with oxygen or hydrogen to become toxic molecules as ammoniac (NH3) or nitrates (NO2 and NO3) . So the best is to fill the bottom of your bucket with a thick layer of absorbing carbon matter to let the nitrogen bond with the carbon to form nutritive and organic molecules as amino acids. This is the most good for the environment which create a better and more balance compost.
Great help! I currently use a five gallon bucket, plastic bags, and puppy peepads. I don’t like the odor and it uses a lot of plastic bags. I have had the cassette type, but didn’t like it. I might try some kind of divider. Thanks for the helpful info.
Thank you for this video! I'm designing/dreaming of my ideal tiny home and I wanted to know what the options are and how livable a composting toilet is. This video was SUPER helpful if only for the info that the Nature's Head is too dang tall for my short little legs. I am putting the OGO composting toilet on my install list. Thank you VERY much.
Good video. You missed the fact that the Cuddy can be external venting by removing carbon filter, inverting plastic cover and using the rear vent tube. The Cuddy seems to me to be the best although agree with you that the mix may be compromised due to the shape of agitator and bowl. Would be good to have some feedback on this.
Believe or not, I found your video and humor very entertaining. Am looking to build a hunting cabin and think that the Ogo Composting will work the best for my thoughts. Thank you for the information and humor.
GREAT VIDEO!! NECESSARY!! You have 2 mistakes, 1st incineration toilets have several companies who manufacture them not just the 2. Most importantly you left out a great option tge Wrappon toilet. It heat seals each "GO "! Leaving you eith a small package 📦 which is easily disposed of without a long twisted bunch of filled mylar. Great choice highly recommend! Only crappt part is the esthetic. I have seen people make them nicer with some minor creativity. 😉
You asked for comments from women who peed in a bottle with a device and I used a SheWee on a recent camper van trip to Iceland where we had no head and I loved standing up and peeing in a bottle like the men do. I practiced in the shower at home before we left and had no issues. It’s a great option!
Hello Ben Appreciate your detailed study of portable toilets! Have you been able to review the Australian designed Joolca GottaGo toilet, using the liquid and solid waste separation concept? I think it has only been out a year or maybe 2, but looks well engineered, designed and thought out and a strong contender for van or boat life. I have the Thetford 365 chemical toilet you described so well, with the base plate option for fixing to the floor in our boat, but I may consider at some point in the future, replacing it with the Joolca system which is now available here in the UK, for more convenient and lighter emptying. Well done on the video!
Good and thorough review; about the best I've seen. we have an RV and thought about one of these to eliminate black tank reliance (and just tank gray). But none of these portables are a panacea. I like the 'tiny' as perhaps best solution also: as being the best mix of pro's and price point. I think the question most people have unanswered from reviews I've seen so far is- whether a dry flush, separating, or incinerator type- what happens on sick days or people going one right after the other?
I’ve used the Nature’s Head (NH) on a daily for about 5 years now. I wish they would ask me what I would do to make it better. I have plenty of ideas. I agree I don’t think it’s great for van life. The One mod I did with my NH was to stop using the liquids bottle, well actually I bought a second bottle first. Issue was still you need to absolutely pay attention to the levels. Overflow mishaps were the WORST! Put it simple Pee explosion😅 I used a Hepvo valve and some PVC to my black tank. Boom no more worries with Number 1’s. When I have time after one of my Full scale cleanings I am going to Fill all the gaps and areas of wasted space in the waste tank and in the seat cavities I want to promote better aire flow and decrease the places for critters and dirt to collect. Thinking about using great foam and Henry’s silicone sealant.
“If I’m baking brownies I’m also making lemonade” my favorite quote of 2024.
Agree 👍
Watched to the end. I'd rank this in my top 10 best information videos I've seen on the Tube.

The dry flush option has a garbage bag liner, so if the Mylar rips, you’ll likely be ok.
Excellent and very educational video. Thank you for taking the time to expain all the options. As of now, I'm still in none of the above category.

You had way too much fun with this! 😂😂😂
Put Dawn Dish liquid and calgon water softner in the cassette toilets. kills smell and breaks down everything quick
For infrequent use: cassette
I'm looking for a toilet...new van build....thank you so much for all the great info
If your Thetford push button flusher mechanism fails it’s about a hundred bucks to replace it. The good news is you CAN replace it.
It's my air fryer, please don't crap in it....ROFL! BTW, great video. I think for me the Separett is still winner.
Great info, explained the pros and cons well. Thank you!
Believe or not, I found your video and humor very entertaining. Am looking to build a hunting cabin and think that the Ogo Composting will work the best for my thoughts. Thank you for the information and humor.
Great video. Thank you.
That and a $1.50 per liner.
You asked for comments from women who peed in a bottle with a device and I used a SheWee on a recent camper van trip to Iceland where we had no head and I loved standing up and peeing in a bottle like the men do. I practiced in the shower at home before we left and had no issues. It’s a great option!
Brilliant! Thank you
Thank you - extremely useful.
I came here hoping to see the Joolca as that one is top of my list currently.
Laveo Dryflush cassette looks like jiffy pop
Please don't poo in my air fryer 😂
Thank you for sharing
Dang it! Your real estate analogy was sweet…but you said “you missed your target” when you COULD HAVE SAID “the sale fell through.” 😂
Good and thorough review; about the best I've seen. we have an RV and thought about one of these to eliminate black tank reliance (and just tank gray).
Very informative
amazing video!
Watch out for the ones that "bang the tackle box." 😂
Great information!
"bang the tacklebox!" hahaha
Burning man is a series of war crimes against toilets 🤣 So true.
