For months i have been looking at videos of how to care for chickens n I have subscribed cuz you have a very good humanly and simple way of explaining how to do the job, keep up the good work! God bless you and your family.👍👍👍
These cups look much more interesting than the water nipples, specially for inside the coop. I bought some nipples and they work, but there's always some drops dripping out of it even if the chickens are not drinking, so the wood shavings end up quite wet and I have to replace it quite often. This system looks much more safe and I'll try it soon :). Thanks for the video!
Awesome. Today is one of my leisure days and was looking for water ideas to add for my girls this spring. Love this system and would work very well for me during the summer months in Maine. Thanks for sharing. Have liked and subscribed. Blessings.
Fantastic video. So simple but yet so slick and effective. Major kudos for coming up with this setup. I'm definitely designing my water system for the coup I just finished based on your solution. But instead of a 55 gallon drum (or any reservoir for that matter), I'll be using the household water line since I have access to it 2 feet away from the coup. I will obviously be forced to add adjustable pressure regulator & color coded gauge to it, but since they only fit 1/2 PCV, I'll probably go with 1/2 pvc the entire length. Feel free to holler if you find any flaws with this. Not being able to collect rainwater for the system would be one major drawback...
+Peter Bergstrand Hi Peter! sounds like a great setup to me! If you got the water there, then use it:) I think 1/2" should do fine for your piping... but I'd check to see if it'll work well for the cups to be installed to. The cups have about a 5/8" threaded portion that will protrude into the pipe and may take up a bit of room in the 1/2".... but if so, all you'd have to do is just adapt to 3/4" from your 1/2" source line to the portion in the box.. so it wouldn't really be much difference in cost overall. Anyways, hope that made sense. Joe
Just got a material list from this video. Awesome stuff, I'm going to mock your system! Building my chicken run this week, and have 6 beautiful golden comets in the brooder inside.
I just asked texasprepper2 about these the other day. Great vid looks like this is the type of waterer I'll be using when I build my coop. God bless buddy
Thanks so much. Great information presented in an easy to follow format. I'm definitely incorporating this into my coop design. Keep up the great work.
Great Post! Very informative. I would like to install the same system for my little coop. I’ve seen these watering cups at my local livestock store. Thank you for sharing. I’ve enjoyed watching.
Very well done. I like the buried pipe and cleanout ideas. Now that you have had time to evaluate it's performance over some time, let me ask a couple questions. Does the volume of water help to keep the water cool enough or does it have to be replaced with fresh water to keep it acceptably cool? Secondly, how is the quality of water after it has been in the barrel for a while? Does it get Alge and funky? How long is the water generally good for?
Great video I was trying to figure out what I was going to do with my beers now I know thanks for sharing I’m going to directly feed it to my Garden hose screw it to my fence right by my beehives.
homesteadonomics hi I live in PA and love all your videos I’m wondering what would I have to do for winter building this water system to prevent it from freezing
That's a better system then what, I seen on other channel's. It has more natural way for the chicken to drink water. They don't have to put in much efforts. The water come out in a bowl, just enough.
yack f zay I agree... they have taken to them very well. Wasn't much of a learning curve either... like with some other designs of nipple waterers. Thanks for watching:)
Video is live now of the construction phase. We just had a good rain here in East Texas and maybe a few more days this weekend. I went out there and had a good stream of water from the clean-out. Excited to do the next video showing off the system!
Cool, in colder places like here in Tn., can make the box large enough to put a incandescent light for heat. Don't forget to protect the light from chicken beaks.
Maybe use a water pipe heater.... I use that for my well up in West Virginia when we go up to the mountains in winter. Just wrap the heater tape around the pipe... now... is that safe for PVC???
Sorry where could I get this little toggle feeder contraption? I am in New Zealand. Is it from a hardware store or a pet supplies store? What is it called please?
Hi Mel... I got mine from either ebay or amazon... can't remember. But I do know that McMurray Hatchery sells them as well. But Ebay or something similar will probably be your best bet. They are usually called 'waterer cups' Thanks for watching:) And very cool to hear from NZ too! Love your accents, culture, rugby team (all blacks:).... very cool country you've got there! Joe
I think if they made a brown version or something they would leave it alone. It probably looks like a huuuge amazing flower to them with an underwater pollen stash. But only he knows for sure. Farms are the only place i can think of where a 3D printer would be super useful.
so after you drilled the 3/8 inch hole. did you have to have to run a tap through the hole to make threads. or will the cups make their own threads. if you ran a tap, what size dud you use?
I didn't run a tap.. I just wrapped with teflon and screwed it in.. i unscrewed one and it looked like the black plastic made some shallow threads in the PVC... so it must be harded.. at least by a bit. So far I haven't had any problems with doing it that way:)
I noticed those nipple cups at the local feed & tac last week when shopping for my first chickens. Four of them on a 1 gal plastic bucket for $45...what! Thanks for the info!
Tim Brown Hey tim... I got mine off of ebay or amazon (cant remember) for I think 10-15 bucks shipped for 5 of them. The prices are all over the place but you can also get them from McMurray hatchery as well. Just keep searching until you find a good price:) Joe
absolute genius!! I just stumble upon your page and I love everything you do! thank you for showing us all of these great projects! it inspires me to make these things on my own....only problem is, I don't know the first thing about building lol
+GeekFreeek Thanks GF! Just start on the small ones and you'll make your way to the bigger projects soon enough:) Thanks for watching the vids and glad to have you along the journey:) Joe
In Thailand where I live now They have three months of monsoon rain then hardly any for the rest of the year So I will have to connect mine to the mains And have a back up Because the water goes off about every two weeks for about an hour or so
We have this cups on our new water container but it doesn’t seem like the chickens are learning how to peck it so more water comes out. Yours is higher than ours so I’m wondering if we should raise it so the cups are higher. Any suggestions on getting the chickens to peck at the yellow part?
wow this is great. this setup looks like a fantastic idea i am getting some chickens relatively soon and are looking for the best ways to accommodate water and food without the water and food getting dirty. I also live in Arizona, how do you protect the system form freezing, even my watering lines for my plants freeze
+FreeMare Hi FM... for hard freezes, i will just drain the system.... takes about a minute. For light freezes like 30-32... I just let it be and so far I haven't had any problems:) Hope that helps! Joe
The only concern I have with your system is from the 3:23 mark to the 4:55 mark...your water system seems to be a bee, wasp and/or hornet attracter as well!! I think it's because these "cups" leave little tiny "pools" of water for these insects to drink clean water from. The more traditional watering nipples that require the chickens to peck at them to have water released is better (IMO) because the bees and such can't drink and will hopefully go seek water elsewhere. Your thoughts?!?
Loving this video as well as several of your others!! Great work!! Can you please tell me where and what the flexible supply line is that you have buried underground??
+LXX Thanks LXX! The flexible line is standard 1/2" irrigation tubing. You can get it at Lowes, Home Depot, or pretty much any hardware or home supply place. Hope that helps:) Joe
+homesteadonomics Thanks for the reply!! I am having trouble finding some of these components. Have you ever thought about making up a watering package and selling it?? Minus the barrel of course. The rest should be fairly easy to ship.
I have used the cups in a 2 gallon plastic jug. The water does not flow into the cups as easily as you showed. I, myself, have to hold the nipple in to get even a small amount of water into the cup. The jug is almost full. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Although you do not have to heat this system to keep it thawed during winter, I would. Am brainstorming how to do that. You have any suggestions or ideas? The tank would be easy. The tubing an waterers, not so much.
Hi SF... depending on your temps you might only just need some insulation around the pipes...but if you are in a really cold area you might consider running one line into the coop and one line out.... and during the winter months shut down and drain the outside line and just use the inside line. And maybe put a lamp in the coop as well. Anyways, just some thoughts... let me know if you have any more questions:) joe
Thanks Joe. I live in Alaska. We are thinking the same thing, pipe insulation as well as running it both inside and outside the coop. We do keep a low heat in the coop, just above freezing. We have the gutters up, just have to finish it all. It is Fall here now, might wait until next summer to finish it.
StarFlower99654 you can get heat tapes for pipes. it plugs into an outlet and you run it with your pipe. I like to wrap around for a more spread heat than just a strip. Then wrap in insulation to contain the heat.
Wow, this video certainly got a lot of comments. Just shows the interest in your subject, for sure. Not sure my question was brought up in these 300 comments so apologies if it has. Anyway, how high is the cup from the ground?
I drilled a 3/8 in hole in a pvc pipe and couldn’t get the water era to thread as they have plastic threaders. Not sure where I went wrong. Also, how do I keep the water fresh, without algae growing?
So my husband made this but decided to add a hose and leave the water on very lightly into the tank he made. Will this work? Also, how do you know for sure if the chickens are getting enough water? I took their other waterers away and made sure to fill the cups so they know there is water there....
foam insulation tubing should keep the pipes a few degrees warmer. a low volt heat pad for the bucket would be ideal. those waterproof ones from waterbeds maybe?
When we lived in Colorado I used a heated bird bath. Because it was so open it got messy and I had to change out the water daily, but it didn't freeze so they always had water. I think it would work if you simply left it dry and sat your water bucket on it.
Awesome vide! Getting ready to build one But I have a question....Did you cut the top of the 55 gallon Barrels to attach the swamp cooler fittings inside?
Can you please provide links for fittings for the barrel and hose? I've went to lowe's, home depot, Ace and even took my Ipand and played your video for them and they had no clue about the fittings. I even showed them pictures of the swap cooler fitting and they didn't have anything close to it.
I'm trying to get automatic water to about 10 coops. I'd rather set it up with a smaller drum and a float system with a garden hose attached. from there its a matter of running the tubing everywhere just like a sprinkler system. Oh and building all these parts. I don't even think I need the little boxes, could just mount the pvc tube with tie wraps on the outside of the coops. I would love some help getting something like this going, my chickens have a little money in the bank...lol... I'm just not handy with tools etc. :(
I just bought the cup waterers, and they work. But so far my chickens drink the cup dry and don't peck to get more. Am I doing something wrong or should I just leave it for them to figure out?
Thank you so much for all your content! Its like having an older brother on demand. God bless you!
For months i have been looking at videos of how to care for chickens n I have subscribed cuz you have a very good humanly and simple way of explaining how to do the job, keep up the good work! God bless you and your family.👍👍👍
Best system out there so far. I'm going to incorporate this but with a gutter a downspout and a diverter..FREE WATER !!!!
+James Kast Thanks James! Good luck on the project:) Joe
I've seen others ,but yours without and doubt is by far the best !!! I love your precision .👍👏
Genius idea, it’s very functional and a time saver.
could use a shopping list of parts and their sizes.so I can get the right parts
love your idea!!

I had never seen those cups before. This is a great set up!
+Talbott Harrison Thanks TH! They are the best waterer that I've tried:)
Great idea, i just don't know about having water in the barrel for 2 months or more
If it’s sealed shouldn’t be an issue
that's why I use a 5 gallon bucket, put on top of cages
Wow, that was a great video ! My chickens are going to love it. Thank you for sharing 👍👍💚🐔🐔🐔
🐔 NICE setup and HOW-TO video here....this would water A LOT of chickens!! 💯
I bought the cup from Ebay with 1/2 inch pvc tee.You did good job, even you can put 6 cup around the 55 gallon container
That's a great idea Hyak... I imagine that would make it pretty darn easy to set up too!:)

keep it away for the sun

Great ideas here especially water for bees. Thanks
+Jim Rodgers Thanks Jim! They do like the water cups for sure:)

How do you stop algae from getting into their water system
Add apple cider vinegar to the water. It’s good for the chickens also

Oh and building all these parts. I don't even think I need the little boxes, could just mount the pvc tube with tie wraps on the outside of the coops. I would love some help getting something like this going, my chickens have a little money in the bank...lol... I'm just not handy with tools etc. :(
I don't know what the parts are that you are talking about and can't find them on line on home dept.
I just bought the cup waterers, and they work. But so far my chickens drink the cup dry and don't peck to get more. Am I doing something wrong or should I just leave it for them to figure out?
