  • Taiji Quan is not just Song and sinking in the Zhan Zhuang or standing practice. It includes many characteristics in the Taiji form movements too. As in this video, the roundness is the primary function for the neutralizing Jin (Hua Jin) or even adhering Jin (Zhan Jin).

u just haven't gotten there yet. once u u get the outside shape correct and ur whole body is coordinated then u can start to use yiu mind-idea to move your body. this can be easily done if you use your breath to pretend you are making the movement display itself. just like a string balloon that is shaped into an animal. then you change the breath focus to just the mind and attach the breath and then mind to ur bone. just move that and your muscles/sinew just go along for the ride. it takes time but if u go step by step and use your imagination all the time all day it gets easier. this can't be done if all u do is try it while training at your normal time. al of this must become a part of everthing you do as much as possible. especially zhong ding = connecting and keeping your bai hui and hui yin on the same pane/line. www.pinterest.com/pin/328833210277351140/

Roundness was one of the first things I was taught by my Tai Chi teacher John Kells in the late 80s. It was particularly emphasised when we progressed from the CMC short form to the long form.
He would get us to work on our energy using this roundness quality that you are explaining.
Many of his senior students were exceptional at this, but I was very much a novice and only really grasped the basics.

Very good, qualified and helpful explanation and demonstration.
The crucial question that remains to me is, what do I have to do myself to develop the skill? Can't be just doing the form. Can't either be just thinking about roundness while doing the form. Thus there is a gap between understanding and acting, and I don't know how to bridge the gap.

You need a teacher with this skill in order to get the methods.

Kai/Open the body - Specific release stretching exercises unique to tai chi. So you can feel deeper parts of your body
Song - Allowing gravity to pull flesh off your bone through standing and form exercise, melting tension and creating more space in the body for your mind to fill.
      Ting - Listening skill/ sensitivity
Jin - Refined power. Something like the pathway of power. Forms, drills, help you detect this path of power. And this Jin can be manipulated with your mind if it is connected properly after practicing Kai and Song. And you can make this Jin have a round quality.
The form does all these, but only if you do it correctly with these qualities.
Find a teacher who understands these terms and is able to explain/ demonstrate them clearly. You'll be on the right path. Good luck.

Give yourself a position granting full extension of your arm and use of a solid kick. Create an inside region on your opponent from your position. If your torso is lined square to a larger or stronger opponent, you will be destroyed. The inside region is where the attacker is balanced, it is also where the have power In their movements. Use an angle to close the gap between you and the opponent. Keep a low and mobile stance that allows you to brace or spring in the moment of action. Hands eye level, protect the head and neck. Elbows together, protect ribs. Eye contact may trigger Intimidation leading to panic, frozeness, and indecisive movements. Focus on a point that allows you to see their movement, chin, center clavicle, or sternum. If your torso is lined square to a larger or stronger opponent, you will be destroyed. If you create distance in the moment of conflict, you will be destroyed. Move into your opponent, follow your opponent. Keep elbows together and hands eye level, and knees pushed out. Feet gripping the ground. Keep your angle, create an inside region. Use your stance to you shift your body into each movement.

If you want to learn, first listen. My master says one should check the basics occasionally even at a high level. Start with the physical in structure and be mindful of the tan tien from a qualified teacher.

Roundness is Yuan (圆) but circular is Quan (圈), so they are different.
