Welding a steel roof insert in a 1920s or 1930s car

- In this video I am welding a steel roof insert in a 1932 Chevy coupe. This video outlines the procedure of how I go about tackling a job like this. The process can be applied to any make of 1920s or 1930s coupes and sedans that originally had an open fabric roof. As with anything there are many different methods of filling the roof, this is just the way I do it, it works well for me, doesn't require any specialty tools beyond what the average hobbyist already owns, and needs minimal bodywork when completed. Thanks for watching.

An old body man once told me "spend your time straightening the metal and you won't have to spend your time sanding the filler. The straighter the metal, the better and faster it'll finish up." Don't worry about spending the time straightening the metal out. It'll last longer than the putty will.
Thanks, that's very true!
This guys skill and talent is off the charts IMHO. Awesome work!
Thanks!
You have obviously been doing this work for a long time. Very nice.
Hope the owner doesn't decide to chop the top after all of that beautiful, time consuming metal work! Watching you reminds me of the metal crafters that taught me over 50 years ago. Wish we had tig welders then! Doing the roof fill with oxy/acetylene would have been a nightmare! You are a true craftsman!
Thank you very much for the nice compliment!
I"m just passing through backwards in time since I've discovered your channel. I want to help pump up your advertising revenues as well as watching you work on your projects. I like what I see. Scott was right you are very knowledgeable
Thanks for helping me learn slow and steady and becoming a better hobbyist.
You have got to be the best metal finisher I’ve ever seen and I’ve been in body shop business for 40 years!
Wow thank you! I feel that I'm still very much an amateur at this stuff.
@@CarterAutoRestyling Very humble, but I would not say amateur at all. I wish I had half your skills!
Fantastic work!
That weld shrinking was amazing to watch. Never seen that before actually happening. Great job.
Thank you, glad you found it interesting!
Perfect craftsmanship. I wish I was you.👍
Thanks, but you definitely don't want to be me haha.
I enjoy the craftsmanship.
Kyle - amazing work. Incredible that you basically just eyeballed a completey different car from a different era and knew at a glance it would be such a great "transplant". Your mention of low crown reminds me people like me with 60s and 70s cars would love you to share your knowledge of working with those long, flat, wide hoods, decks, quarters, etc.
I would call that amazing! Seems like your talent would earn you a nice income. If you wanted to work a bigger business. Thanks for sharing.
I love the tab method. I'm 70 yrs old, always excited to find different great methods of positioning. A great helper. Can be used vertically or any location.
Thanks, I'm glad you like that idea! The best part about doing metalwork is there is always something new to learn. I hope to still be learning when I'm 70!
Really interesting! Using the time lapse function really exposes the movement of the metal after you weld it. From about 13:35 to about 14:20 in the video you really see how the metal shrinks back down while it cools. Very cool to see! Good work man! I’m learning while watching. Eh! 🤘🏼👍🏼
Yup! You can actually see the area where he laid a bead dip down from shrinking - crazy!
Well done. Enjoyed the video.
Thank you!
im starting my hard core body work after i can drive it , stay safe friend
Smart idea! A lot of projects get abandoned because people tear them all apart and get overwhelmed before they even get to drive it!
That came out really good.
Thanks!
Nice work
As I watched you tig and the video was in fast motion you could see the heated metal shrink down as it cooled. That was new for me to view. Thanks. Fine job by the way.
Thank you!!!
If I had half your talent- i would be twice as talented as I am.
Beautiful work !
I had to watch this one again. I didn't think you could pull it off twice in a row but I have to say the second one is pretty much just as nice as the first one.
Haha, well let's hope I don't have to do it a third time!
Beautiful work my friend ! You really know what your doing , people can see the end result of your work your GREAT! Thanks for your videos.
Thank you very much for watching!!!
you can see the metal rise and fall when you weld it pretty cool great job as usual
Damn. That is some nice work sir.
Thanks!
Excellent job, wow no filler needed on this. More patience than most to do that amount of work. Once again WOW
Thanks Keith!
AWESOME JOB! I love watching a professional at his craft. Thank you sir
In the time lapse on the welding segments starting around the 14 minute mark, you can actually see the metal rise and then shrink as it cooled immediately after the weld! Something to point out to viewers in the future. I’ve never seen that before in any videos anywhere. The camera angle must have been just right.
Fantastic job. You took your time and worked through each issue.
Thanks!!!
Great job!
At 14:05 I wonder if anyone noticed the metal movement after each weld. The heat and cool , oh just started reading the guys comment right in front of me. Too funny.
I have watched many videos from others that show this process but thanks to the time lapse this is the first time I have actually been able to see the metal rise up and then shrink back down as it cools from the heat. Good photography.
Thanks, catching the metal shrinking on the time lapse was actually an unintended fluke, but I'm glad you found it interesting. Thanks for watching!
If you ever try to weld 20ga or thinner, you can watch that happening in realtime.
Awesome job! I'm sure someone will be butt hurt for some reason or another but it is guaranteed none of them have done a job as beautiful as this.
Love seeing this kinda work!
Thank you sir! It can get pretty tedious, but it's usually worth it in the end.
That looks to be a very nice job
Thank you!
Seen one ,guy cut top off a wagon ,that had ribs in it. Looked great. Beautiful job on this one!
Thanks! The owner wanted a smooth roof
That’s a beautiful roof repair Kyle
Thank you Stuart!
That's such good work.
Thank you!
Slick job!
Unbelievable how much the metal dips after you finish a bead. I had to watch it a few times to see it.
I'm NOT a bodyman! This, your work is incredible to watch, fascinating! In each shot of just after you finish a weld, the metal clearly shrinks. Just wild to see that happen. Now I know why you said you'll fix any problems as they arise, or probably fall in this case. THANK YOU for publishing your work, showcasing your skill, you are far too humble. Please keep on sharing, I for one am learning a great deal. I'm sure your channel will continue to grow, even though you said once you didn't want it to.
Well thank you for watching and thanks for the kind words! I'm always happy to hear that there are a few people who enjoy this type of thing!
Glad to have found your channel! I appreciate your experience and that you share your knowledge!
Great work btw, looks really straight.
Thanks!
Great idea
Wow! Incredible work! That is a prime specimen!
Thank you!!!
Brilliant in both the idea & the execution!!!
Great work as always.
A real pleasure to watch your master craftmanship. At your age you will just get more and more accomplished. Good luck to you and I will be watching.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for sharing sir.
I've always said that watching is the easiest way to learn something.
Obviously you have a passion for "old iron". Would it be tough to answer the question, "what is your holy grail as far as old cars is concerned?
Thanks for watching! I've set my standards low, so I've already owned most of my holy grail vehicles, but the number one will always be my 36 Chevy pickup
Dang! I watched all that work finally to get to the body filler tutorial and it didn’t happen! I been robbed, I tell ya! Seriously though, masterful work young man. A new subscriber and fan for sure!
Awesome, thank you for the support!
That was pretty interesting 🤔 thanks 👍
I'm glad you found it interesting! Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing Kyle,, 👍😎👍
man, you had like 500 subs just a couple weeks ago when i subbed. 10k soon 100k by the end of 2022!
Thanks for being early to the party! I doubt it's going to grow much more, I'm just happy to have such a great audience!
Excellent work!
I just discovered your channel today and am really impressed with being shown how to do this by someone who is left handed like me.
Great to hear from another southpaw!
@@CarterAutoRestyling : Another reason why I think you are somehow related to Scott! ;-)
You're too humble. Excellent job!
An absolutely beautiful job.
Thank you!
Wrote my first comment before finishing the video. Excellent fitment and workmanship. You should be very proud of your finished task. Just started watching.
Thank you Gregory for the kind words!
Very well done. Your patience really pays off.
Very impressive!
Thanks!!!
the tabs with sheet metal screws was an amazing trick. Nice work. I enjoy your videos

Thanks!
Awesome metalwork !
Good work 👍
Thanks!
You did a phenomenal job!
Thanks!!!
Looks awesome 👌 👏
Thank you!
People are going to watch this and think that its not That hard to do. If he can do it, I should be able to do it. People don't understand the amount of time and effort it takes. I've done bodywork for a while but not to this level. Excellent work 👏 👍
Thank you very much! I do hope that some of this stuff inspires people to try. A lot of what I do is just repetition and patience.
You sir are an artist well done .
Oh I'm no artist, just a hack with a lot of patience Haha! Thanks for watching!
Great job and your very modest about your skills. Impressive!
Thank you Scott!
Killer work Kyle ! I always enjoy your videos !
Thanks David!

WOW that looks Nice
Looks great
Thank you!
As an old bodtman with over 40 yrs exp. Thats a very fine job.
Wow thank you! I appreciate the compliment!
all I can say is WOW.
Thanks!
Excelent !
Great work. Nice and clean. This is how it should be done. Without the need for 20 pounds of bondo
Thanks! We try to keep the bondo to under 18 pounds haha
Pretty neat Job Kyle
Thank you!
Excellent work Kyle!! As always you amaze me with your metal expertise, when you're done with the metal work you don't need body filler, just prime it and paint and you're good to go! Question though, are you adding any supports to keep it from tin-canning, or does it have enough curve to the roof to support itself?
Thanks Ken. Yes I did end up bracing the roof using the original supports from the Chevelle donor roof. They are just temporarily tacked in at the moment because the owner of the car still needs to replace all the wood and install sound deadener on the inside of the roof.
Very good job. How come you have the coolest cars to work on.
Thanks, I'm fortunate to have some fun projects on the go. Plus, the not so fun stuff doesn't get filmed or documented.
Wow man
Awesome job !!!!
Thanks!
You got some mad skills bro looks brilliant👌👍
Thank you!
thats some really nice work
Thanks!
Just what i wanted to see
you do amazing work! Wow!
Thank you!
Very nice job!
Thank you!
Excellent!
I know this is an old video, but when you were tack welding, why didn't you move to another spot on the other side of the roof while the previous weld was cooling? Just wondering, if someone knows the answer let me know. The final result was amazing, really detailed craftsmanship and you're right, most people would bondo the crap out of the roof and call it a day. Thanks for the video.
Skipping around causes more distortion, expecially on a large flat panel. Even a 1/2" long weld can cause a panel to buckle in the middle and if you're moving around it becomes impossible to tell which weld the distortion is coming from.
That Chevelle roof turned out great on there! I have the same english wheel that you do, it was very frustrating to use with how spongy and inconsistent it was. I added a backbone on mine out of roll bar tubing left over from another project and polished the upper and lower anvils. It made a huge difference. Very consistent and a lot easier to make panels with it. You may want to consider something similar if it gives you too much trouble.
Thanks, Bracing up the english wheel has been on my to do list forever. One of these days I'll get tired of fighting with it and actually do something about it.
@@CarterAutoRestyling I highly recommend it
Amazing talent, thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
That looks great
Thanks!
You the man awesome to watch ⌚ 🙌 👏 👌
Thanks!!!
I think that's the best work I've ever seen
Thanks Ken!
