If I had to take a stab and what the different breeds are designed to do if we go with they where breed with magic I'd say that,
The syrax species is designed for speed and agility in the air with a smaller size and smaller shape
The caraxes species is designed for long distance travel with its long light body, lone wings and extra back leg wings
And the drogon species is designed for pure fighting power with robust body, massive Jaws and powerful fire

In fact, Vhagar and Meraxes were born in Westeros, on Dragonstone. Balerion is the only dragon that was actually born in Valyria.

Bulkier breed - Balerion, Drogon, Vhagar, Rhaegal, Syrax
Slim and agile breed - Caraxes, Sunfyre, Tessarion, Meleys, Morning
Smaller breeds, meant for delivering messages and joyriding - Moondancer, Quicksilver
I also believe that Valyrians bred them for specific jobs to assist in Valyria but that they were all bred for war or at the very least could be utilized in wars, be it vanguard, support, distraction, or messengers.

yes! i said this on another vid where the same two people were arguing over and over in the comments about how there was nothing else in the world of ASOIAF that could harm a Targaryen dragon, especially Balerion.....even though something obviously did bc of his condition upon returning with princess Aerea. Septon Barth's book, Dragons, Wyrms, and WyrvernsL Their Unnatural History (which King Baelor I condemned and ordered every copy destroyed, except for a few incomplete surviving fragments) speculated on how it was possible the Valyrian bloodmages may have created dragons from wyvern (and firewyrm=some of the missing bits) stock/DNA. if Barth were indeed correct, then yeah a firewym or wyvern might F a dragon up, although for Balerion it may have taken a whole gang of them. firewyrms were said to live in the 14 Flames long before dragons appeared, that they hatred men, and could breathe fire. wyverns look similar to dragons in ASOIAF but are said to be more ferocious, they have wings and claws, but also sharp weird beaks, could not breathe fire, and were found just a bit south of Valyria on Sothoryos. i think thats probably what happened. maybe, lol love me some GRRM

wouldn't you expect to see accounts of the valyrians taming/using wyverns and fire wyrms then? It would be pretty weird if they managed to go straight from encountering two completely different species, in completely different places to merging the two together without some period of coming to understand both. Especially seeing as we're told that the Valyrians went from sheep farmers to dragons, wouldn't you expect there to be a period of the Valyrians using wyrms and/or wyverns? Utilising either one of those would surely earn them a place in the history books as something other than sheep farmers.

Wasn't caraxes said to be deformed? He seems to be the same breed as Arrax and Vermax. Syrax and Sunfyre seems to be the same breed. Seasmoke, dreamfyre, viserion, balerion, drogon and rhaegal seems to be the same breed. But that leaves Meleys who seems to be an entirely different breed, and not only in terms of looks but also her sound design. So it seems to be 4 different breeds (Drogon's breed, Syrax's breed, Vermax's breed and Meleys' breed) of course there can be dragons of same sub species or breed that look different from one another (different bend in horns for example) but the difference is too big for meleys to be related to any of the 3 main breeds unless she or any other dragons are hybrids

      @Mr.Agateophile. Год назад +11

@@klaythompson663 Except that the distinction is a modern addition. So it is not the same situation as lions and tigers at all.
D&D popularised the idea that Wyverns are a seperate spiecies and that's fine if the setting does draw a distinction such as D&D and indeed ASOIAF. But that rule is not universal by any means. Historically a Dragon is literaly any giant serpentine creature, and in modern deffinitions any giant mythical reptile.
You're right that it is a topic that many people are ignorant of, but not for the reasons you describe.
And again, the only Real world distinction comes from English, Scottish, and Irish heraldry yet other European countries did not separate the two. So one cannot even say that European or western dragons are one specific form.
Only when your specific Fantasy setting specifies there is a difference and then only in that world.

A wyvern in most fantasy stories (though not all) is just a different type of dragon.

The first line of your comment is right on the money. But as absolute lifeless spod that's way to into mythologies and history I can clarify a bit more in a real world sense. 'Wyvern (pronounced Why-vern) is actually a term for a biomechanical frame type of certain animals, like humans are bipedal and dogs are quadrapeds. Bats are technically wyverns, using their fore legs / arms to walk as well as fly. All pterasaurs are wyverns for the same reason. However there is a greek / roman mythological creature called: 'Wyvern' too (pronounce wiv-ern and not Why-vern) that gets people confused. Wyverns (wiv-erns) are about human height with a dragon like body that stand up right like chicken or seagull with wings cross behind their backs or tuck in at the sides like modern bird and have snake like necks and heads. They don't breath fire instead they spit acid or tar. So same spelling but different pronouncation and meaning. One is nasty walking winged-snake like acidic tar snot squirter from greek mythos and the other is referrence to a body type of a animal (in most cases, a type of dragon or to describe how flying dinosaurs may have lived on the ground).

0:21 it was aenar targaryen who relocated his house from valyria to dragonstone and they lived there for 6 generations before aegon, rhaenys, and visenya conquered westeros. balerion was the last targaryen dragon to have seen valyria before its collapse, he died at over 200 years old. vhagar and meraxes were both hatched on dragonstone.

breeds probably are not much of a thing anymore since the first targaryens in westeros had so few left and just likely bred together any they could to get eggs and keep the species alive. the dragons living during the dance are probably mixed between breeds, but we can maybe try and look who is related closest by head shapes. in old valyria they probably kept breeds more apart to have the specific traits kept for each type. but in the current show i think the dragons are just not pure bred breeds anymore

Wyverns being basically dragons with any number of limbs but unable to breathe fire comes from actual dragon mythology. It's funny to me how the ability to breathe fire sets dragons apart from wyverns instead of their number of limbs.

  • @flamenebula1856
    @flamenebula1856 Год назад

The theory of dragons being hybrids from wyverns & fire worms seem plausible, tho all dragons were bred for fighting and the older they are the bigger they grow so there are only 2 types,
Heavy slower "war horse" type :- Drogon, Balarion, Vhagar
Sleeker nimble, faster type :- cyrax, sunfyre, meleys
Caraxes although it is said was deformed is probably a throw back to what the first F1 hybrid looked like, as he looks like a worm who has wings and breaths fire

This is in fact an interesting bit of history of the English language. Until the Norman conquest of England, "hound" was the only word for dogs. Like in German were it is "Hund". Dog is an old loanword from medieval Norman French. Because of the Norman aristocracy in England "dog" spread into the common speech and "hound" was only remembered in the countryside, where hunting dogs were used.

Don't necessarily put too much sock in what showrunners say. Often they do something for an artistic choice, and then make a comment about it, but have put far less thought into it than the fans. The fans then run wild with theories, but none of it will necessarily play out in anything on the show. I've seen fan arguments going on and on at length, on which dragon type Vhagar is, with fans comparing her skull to a T.Rex, to show she looks nothing like a horse, then others arguing that isn't what horse type means, and so on. Then they will further argue about which breed simply has to be the parent of Danny's dragons, and others will argue that different breeds doesn't mean they can't necessarily produce offspring with other breed characteristics. Putting too much thought into this. The dragon's vary in appearance, but don't try to extrapolate too much from it.

Aegon was absolutely not the first to bring dragons to westeros. that honor goes to Aenar, father of Daynes the dreamer who forsaw the doom. dragon lords were seen visiting westeros and specifically flying over the black water rush when Aenar migrated to dragonstone. likely trying to get Aenar to return his dragons to the freehold as it was illegal for them to live outside of Valyria. then the doom came. a few generations later, Aegon came around and had his dream. Then he and his sisters brought their dragons to war. they were not this first recorded dragon riders in westeros which you literally just stated near the end of the video after previously saying the opposite. do you even know words you are saying?

In the A Song of Ice and Fire universe, Dragons and Wyverns are closely related but distinctly different species with a common ancestor.
George's Dragons are more realistic in their body plan, by having 4 limbs and not the stereotypical European 6 limbed body plan.
Let's assume evolution in this universe happened in parallel with what happened in real life. Where both dragons and wyverns evolved from a quadruped ancestor. One of them evolved the ability to breathe fire, but other didn't.
Dragons uses quadruped locomotion, much like what bats and pterosaurs do.
Wyverns in this universe, I'm not sure if they're bipeds or quadrupeds, but it's still possible for them to evolve bidal locomotion and be able to fly, a good irl example are birds, who's distant ancestors are quadrupeds that evolved into bipeds (aka Dinosaurs and later birds).

What is all the theories are all correct but just happen in a certain order. Like someone from the shadow lands made them from a wyvern and wyrm , took them to valariya, then the eggs they lay there hatched and people thought that was the beginning of them,
then lil later some targs did some blood magic to tweak them to make the new creatures (dragons) obey them since they where really into that with all the slaves they owned and what not.
Only one idk about and can’t get behind is the whole cracked second moon theory. But someone feel free to enlighten me to it. Maybe I just can seen the possibilities in that one.

I love Drogon’s design and his fire seemed to be explosive as we saw when he destroyed King’s Landing all by himself, stone buildings and the city walls just blew up like dynamite had been used, though it was said Balerion’s fire did the same when people thought they were safe inside their castles as stone doesn’t melt (which it does hence lava/magma). But Caraxes’s long serpent like body just looks wrong where as Vhagar’s hornless head and big flappy bit of skin under her neck were disappointing to see as I wanted to see her look like Drogon but just bigger

The rules are different in each fantasy setting. A lot of people base their settings off D&D so the wyvern/dragon thing comes up when it really shouldn't.
However, if we look to the real world "Dragon" is symply the elglish word for any giant serpintine creature. 2 legs, 4 legs, no legs, 2 wings, 4 wings, no wings All have been hystorically called Dragons, or an ancient form of the word.
Aditional: the only historical distinction between Dragons and Wyverns (pronounced why-vern btw, not wi-vern) comes from historically modern heraldry, and even there they are refered to as 2 winged Dragons.
