I know its a small detail, but as a brazillian person who grew up hearing of our folklore, i am so happy you added Iara as a Merfolk subspecies. Made me imagine what behaviour such a creature would have logically, but also when taking our tales into account. I love seeing our folklore get attention in this way.

Of course. Imagine wolves, with the size, the social prowess, and the intelligence comparable or even much better than humans.
If they evolved to go on land, we would be fucked.
People think fire breathing is impossible, but they forget that nature already has a living fire breathing creature. People forget about the fire-breathing beetle in the amazon. A beetle that shots a chemical concoction at high speeds that once it touches oxygen combust into a fire explosion.
It’s called the bombardier beetle
Actually, it doesn't breathe fire. It shoots a corrosive chemical. Snakes, however can breathe fire. Kinda. Essentially, when they burp, they can create sparks. Just give them a couple million years of evolution and we will have dragons.

When you shot a flamable liquid into atmosphere at high pressure, it creates combustion. And the beetle does that, it creates a spark as it shoots out super hot acid.

Every culture across the world spoke of dragons in some form..Obviously dinosaurs or extinct animals
The funniest thing is that humans in that universe probably don't even see dragons as mystical majestic creatures and are used to them, same goes for our world, that already has a lot of beautiful and monstrous species, but for some reason we still dream of some cryptids because we are too used to knowing and seeing the real animals of our planet

Listen tigers,hyenas,wolves,foxes and fucking pidgeons frequently show up in the mythos of people who have seen them if we had dragons then they would totally be about as loved as they are here and would probably often be the symbols of gods and whatnot

I find it super interesting how they were speculative enough to invent an entirely new form of integument for the dragons. They have 'scales' but they're shaped and arranged similarly to feathers.
I'm running a D&D campaign that aims to be a little more realistic and grounded than the typical over the top modern fantasy setting, and Draconology has really inspired me to introduce monsters that feel plausible and dangerous. It's a great project.

If you want to be realistic, I must wonder how you would explain Orcs, Elves, Halflings, and Dwarves? I personally think Orcs are simply Homo Erectis with prognathism. That's because Homo Erectus is both taller and stronger than humans and a cannibal, so they're scary asf. Dwarves are simply Neanderthals with shorter height, perhaps through years of living in cramped caves with limited light sources. They're still incredibly strong and smart, like irl neanderthals, but with a focus on mining.

@@minutemansam1214 Orcs aren't necessarily a giant, just slightly taller than most humans (Look at Skyrim). Homo Erectus was taller than Neanderthals who was 5'8" (the same height as humans back then if not taller).
I like the fact that the Tiamat was portrayed as some sort of mossasaur-like creature.
10:28 The "Titan Drake" (Dirosuchus Maximus) is a majestic scaly critter, I imagine this drake as a deity in the world of Draconia and would have been voiced by "Liam Neeson" who voiced the great lion "Aslan" from C.S. Lewis The Chronicles of Narnia, Also I've gave this particular drake an individual name, I named him "Igby".
Sure (Draconia) is the family tree name for the "True Dragons", "Bird Dragons" and "Gryphons" & a Dragon survival video game. But I like to used this name as a world and a enormous island in a archipelago inhabited by Dragons, Trolls, and various critters (Real, Ancient and Fictional) of all shapes and sizes. Humans also inhabited this world (the good types: various tribes & villagers. The bad types: trappers, hunters & warlords)
Just like in many various world by fantasy authors.
In one artwork where the "Titan Drake"(Dirosuchus Maximus) fought the sea serpent "Tiamat"(Typhoneustes Regius) similar with Godzilla fought Titanus Tiamat in the follow up comic book "Godzilla: Dominion"
To everyone perspective the Titan Drake (Dirosuchus Maximus) is the Titanus Gorjia of the dragon world.
This is how everyone sees him (Igby the Titan Drake) very Big, intimidating but he has a voice that is soft as wild honey dripping from a tree.
If the Titan Drake has a powerful fire breath it should be similar to Godzilla atomic breath but instead of a blue color his fire breath blast is to be a rainbow trolls colors(DreamWorks Trolls) his charge up glows from his tail to dorsal osteoderms plates and expelled from his mouth, the colors comes in seven shades, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red then BOOM! Firepower🌈🔥 at his enemies. (Man or Beast)
I imagine the mountain devil having voice similar to Smaug .
My idea about the Asian Dragon is that they are actually a giant relative of Paradise Flying Snake that is fully capable of flight not just gliding.
The fact that somehow dragons were talked about by like everyone across the world

A combination of fossils and travellers spreading lore. There's also a solid argument for humanity all having brains that work in similar ways. For instance, a town is swept away by a hurricane or a large flood, over generations of retelling the town becomes a mythical place with impossible technology. Humans always live near water, its just logical that towns being lost would be a regular occurrence.
In the case of dragons, I'd be willing to bet it had a lot to do with Chinese immigrants. Their mythology goes back extremely far, its not hard to imagine them bringing tales of dragons and their universal appeal spreading the idea like wildfire
Western dragons and Eastern dragons have actually very little in common. I know a person with no previous exposure to Western dragon mythology who couldn't understand why we consider them as evil monsters who must be killed, as they're benign divine spirits in most Eastern cultures.
@@Kumagoro42 I mean, how many creatures can you think of in western culture that were held sacred? We killed everything lol. Maybe fairies? I think it might be considered bad luck to kill a fairy. Hell, up until the early 20th century it was the pinnacle of being a worldly badass to travel to Africa to kill every big creature they've got with ginormous guns.
Yes. They're called big damn reptiles. Like the Nile Crocodile, or the Python, or the Komodo Dragon.
A long time ago there was a "documentary" called The Last Dragon. It was about a couple of paleologis caught in a cave and find Dragon fossils. They explain all the features of dragon's with biology.

Just an idea, could Dragons use their flame breath as a way to create small updrafts that the dragon uses to rise and aid their heavy body
Humans did live with reptilian megafauna, we also wiped them into extinction, they were the megalania, almost the exact same as the ones seen in ark survival evolved, with some differences of course.
It very well could not be megalania, but I know for a fact we lived with something similar that got wiped out because of humans sadly. Or luckily, either way, so be it.
Humanity didn't wipe out megalania Australia is always traveling northwards so the climate changes over time as the continents shift.
For a while it was in a position to support large life but it moved into a hotter area, so it wasn't humans but climate change that killed megalania and all other Australian megafauna.

@@garrettamerson99 Climate change is a natural thing to happen, by either the land masses shifting position over time creating different water currents to pretty much any natural disasters such as forest fires, eruptions, earthquakes (once again shifting land masses/creating mountains etc).
Not saying humans aren't speeding it along, not saying they are.
But it is a natural process that our planet has been going through ever since the earth has formed.

I always thought dragons had 4 legs and wings on their backs and wyverns had 4 legs but their wings were attached to their front legs.
Doesn't dragon just mean large lizard. If there was a large lizard that breathed fire, with all the tales of nights killing them, it's safe to say they were killed off.
Imagine a survival game where you can play as dragons just like these
i always like the idea that dragons were real and driven extinct, it would make sense given all the stories of them being slayed, or prized for their hides.
Yet there is no physical evidence of their bodies in all of existence.... the idea is I threshing but we cannot simply dive completely into fantasy, we must have one Foo planted firmly in reality

On the other hand, hollow bones for a flying animal are likely to be absent from the fossil record. There are far more species we dont know about than the ones we can prove existed.

I'm not sure if it's related but there was a series of books that included one called dragonology where it goes deep into speculative biology of dragons, including things like fake scales, feathers and skin.

See, I don't know that it's realistic, but I like the idea of the fire-breathing organ being flexible enough to adapt to different environments, so that for instance, the sea drakes could replace fire breathing with a stunning sonic cry. Still, I enjoy how well-thought-out this all is.
I found this video to be very cool. And the artwork renditions to be absolutely worth even pausing the video so i could take it all in.

7:05 just a small correction, Iara is pronouced with a propper I, not the english (ai), but the equivalent of (ee), it would be like (eeara)
I'm also curious about how exactly they're related. He referred to them as cousins but they do not share the same genus name (the first part of the name in binomial nomenclature) is it like saying cats and dogs are cousins when they're not from the same genus? But they appear so similar in physiology they should be under the same genus and be separate species only. I need a paper on their individual biology is it something internal we aren't seeing that's so different?
@@cakes4494 they probably share the same subfamily, all big cats for exemple share the same genus, but clouded leopards are from a different genus and belongs to the same subfamily, very close though not as much as the others

I believe it depends on the species. As some dragons are way smarter than humans while others have mild intelligence.
According the the author some of the dragons in that world are just as intelligent as primates, cetaceans, and some birds

The Mountain Devil's size and height make it as tall as a Quetzalcoatlus Northropi, but without the hollow bones.
It makes sense that it hunts in lowlands because if it were a sky-based aquatic creature hunter, the amount of drag (pun intended) it would have to contend with would be massive.
The mountain devil and it’s relatives are the best dragons.

i remember watching a show that was called something along the lines "dragons a fantasy made real" where it followed a documentary style show that delved into how dragons would be if they were real. first off the common european dragon couldnt exist so they used the wyvern(winged front limbs) that had lived during the time of the dinosaurs (i forgot the details beyond that on how it survived the extinction event) as for the details on its biology it has cartilage bones and a second pair of lungs that act like a swim bladder but for flight. the 2nd pair of lungs hold helium made by bacteria in their guts. as for the fire breathing they use the helium in the flight bladder along with platinum. the chew it with flat teeth in the back of the mouth and this gave the reason they are known to like shiny objects. to keep the fire from going back into their throat they have a flap like alligators and crocodiles have to keep water out. they need the helium to fly so they only use fire in a last resort.
it also covered the japanese and chinese dragons evolving to be long and slender losing their wings as their habitat was the bambo forests and rivers with their number of toes changing between them to explain why one version has more/less toes vs the other

Due to the fragility of a leather membrane, I was expecting the true dragon to be fethered
Pterosaurs had wing membranes. I don't think we know if they had feathers on top of them or not though. But if they did they weren't for flight. Considering how big they got, it makes perfect sense for a dragon to have wing membranes.
Well, despite being quite delicate bat wing membranes can repair and heal itself fairly quickly when damaged, so the same adaptation could probably applied to the membrane wings dragons too

Anyway I was also thinking about the advantages of fethers like:
-Cold resistance and some chemical resistance
-Slash Attack resistance
-Better mechanical and fluidodynamic caracteristics
-Easier to repair and/or replace
-Lighter.
There Is also the problem of wing loading. Skin membrane can withstand lower loads than fethers
@@federicoxcc4966 There is a reason why pterosaurs were the largest flying organisms of all time. Skin is superior to feathers at producing lift.
@@minutemansam1214 they became the largest due to the way they take off, not the leather membrane. Pterosaurus took off by lounching themselves with the same powerfull muscles they used to fly. Birds have a limitation in dimentions because they take off by using their legs, not the powerfull muscles used to fly, so they are less optimized than pterosaurus in take off.
I love how dragons here are hunted by real life animals. Seems like the marine dragons aren't invincible, the wicked orcas are.

One visited me in a dream and brought me a message of goodness there were no wings it was a slifer but I have never had a dream of a dragon before or after that in my entire life

The merfolk made me giggle with joy
One sort of science nerd thing about breathing fire. As a method of cooking, using a liquid fuel would require an extreme amount of it to do any significant heating, even extreme heat like described here. Water is amazingly resiliant to heating. Also, for a creature big enough to be their prey, it would be necessary to butcher it in order to cook the meat without totally immolating it and transforming a lot of the caloric content into gas. I think it is indeed not impossible by the miracles of nature for an animal to develop the ability to breath fire. Nature does frankly more ridiculous things than that all the time. It's merely that fire is not a calorically reasonable adaptation to ever be useful.
It seems silly to say this, but every time I see a feathered dinosaur I am reminded of artistic representations of dragons in the Middle Ages. A simple search, very simplistic, even on Google Image, to make comparisons. However, in place of ears and horns, manes, bristles, and crests may be used (certain species of owls, for example). Who knows, it might be a real creature that inspired the legends; Evolution is multilinear, dinosaurs gave rise to birds; and, perhaps, some surviving dinosaur species must have stayed side by side for some time.

This is just awesome 🙏 Yes there are Dragons across world cultures and histories. Maybe if there was a stage between Dinosauria and birds like the raptors which may have morphed into larger varieties and whom may 'not' have breathed fire can still be considered to fit the description of dragons. So if the accounts are true, these raptor creatures existed in the early C.Es and the B.C.Es ?? That's an amazing find actually with all the fossils lying around and being discovered in different formations around the world. Remember studying about a raptor that could morph it's feathery limbs into wings to glide and fly a distance and then return to normal form ! These creatures may have been there (some species) during time of early humans. That explains a lot. Thank you.

You probably already know, but nontheless I think I should comment that the Iara (actually pronounced like "ee-ara") is based on a mermaid/nymph from brazilian folklore. It's always nice to see refferences to our country on big stuff like this.

Well I've seen aquatic trolls before they are known as the Techno Trolls from the DreamWorks Trolls franchise.

As a Dungeons and Dragons fan, it just feels wrong for a sea serpent to get the title of Tiamat.
Tiamat, in D&D, is the five headed draconic god of Chromatic dragons, (ie; red, blue, green, black and white) trapped in the Nine Hells. Tiamat has a Wyvern's tail, which ends in a vicious spike that is full of poison strong enough to rot flesh away in seconds. Each of her five heads breaths a different Element. Fire, Ice, Lightning, Poison gas, and Acid. She eats any of her children she doesn't like, and makes more children with any of them she does like, so yikes. Seeing that name on a particularly grouchy sea serpent is like naming a pug breed after Cerberus
Well Tiamat in D&D get's her name from a Babylonian creation goddess associated with water, who is also often depicted as a Dragon. So in that regards, it makes sense to have name from irl mythology/religion for this particular dragon.

Not a fan of dragons, but this is well made. A believeable explanation why fire breathing could develop naturally. Considering electric eels exist, even a lightning subspecies becomes plausible. What is a ball lightning, but highly electrically charged ionized gas? Paired with how bioluminescence works, all kinds of 'breath weapons' become plausible.

When "cooking" their food, do they use purely their own pyrogenesis, or do they create some kind of bonfire and use their pyrogenesis to ignite that which cooks their food? Because the former would be extremely calorically wasteful, but the latter would require a significant amount of intelligence and dedicated preparation for almost any animal to pull off.

Who knows, they are probably on an distant planet somewhere. Plus the old testament is really about a dragon if you think about it. Burning down towns, flying fiery serpents and even the description of god just screams dragon story to me.
I hope that one day dragons are revealed to be real and not that dangerous (so people wouldn't kill them for no reason like in legends), that we can co-exsist with them, cuz i really really like dragons, they are so adorable.

Yeah no. The fact that they aren't that dangerous only means that capturing it is much easier. The demand and price of dragon body parts will be so high it'll break the black market. Governments will have to step in to actively protect their wildlife property from poachers at all times with snipers and cameras everywhere.
