Well can't say about Nissan but certainly wrong about some Dodges my 2003 Dakota 4x4 is still going strong over 240,000 miles. Original engine and transmission just general maintenance keeps her running great. Sure some things have worn and been replaced but that's expected especially in some of the crap I have to drive in. That's why I have a 4x4 to start with. I have seen people have a lot of engine trouble with the Dakota engines but my 4.7 magnum still purrs and no matter how cold it gets it still starts soon as you crank it.
I have a 1991 nissan pathfinder and I love it, V6 5 speed
My wife has a 2012 pathfinder with almost 300k miles on it. I’ve really just replaced wear items...
Should I buy a 2013 Tacoma or a 2018 Frontier, same price, same miles? Or should I buy a Camaro SS?
Its about how it was takin care of and driven and not so much about the brand Scotty. As a supposed mechanic, you should know that. I had a 2003 kia spectra with over 400k still running well when i sold it, it was very well taken care of.
You don’t realize how long 50 years is until you listen to a 50-year mechanic talk about cars. Absolutely love this channel

I've got a 2009 Nissan Pathfinder SE 4WD. I bought it brand new back in 2009. Currently at 90,000 miles. Other than routine maintenance so far zero issues to report in 12 years. Solid rig & I never plan on getting rid of it.

We bought our 2007 Pathfinder SE new and it is still going strong at 261,000 miles. Love this car. The black paint has stayed gorgeous even though it’s been outside since 2015. (We buffed it once, hand wash it and keep it waxed). We change the oil ourselves every 4,000 miles with full synthetic, change the transmission fluid every 30-35k, coolant every 60k, spark plugs every 100k, all filters at factory recommended intervals, and brake fluid every 2-3 years. We had the infamous transmission cooler leak inside the radiator at 80,000 miles. Nissan replaced the transmission and radiator and our cost came in at $1500 which was reasonable considering the high cost of what they had to do. I had them bypass the internal transmission cooler so it would never happen again (it also has an external cooler). Then we had the timing chain guide wear problem at 90,000 miles Had the guides replaced and had the water pump replaced at the same time since they were in there (it wasn’t having a problem). That all cost about $1,000. Since then we have replaced the U joints, the front right wheel bearing, brake switch, air bag switch assembly, coolant pipe, camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, shifter cable, valve cover gaskets, replace A/C air control actuator in dash, replaced one oxygen sensor, serpentine belt and tensioner and the fuel gauge sensor. Everything was spread out over the last 14 years. Original brakes lasted to 200,000 miles with mostly in town driving with life still left on them. Turned the rotors and they are still going strong. Once we got through the two problems these cars are known for (before 100,000 miles). It’s been a really good car. Still get lots of compliments on it. The original alternator is still going strong! No check engine lights and drives great. There has been some expense to get it to this point but we love this car and it’s been worth it.
I think the key to saving money on old cars is to live in a place where they don't have emissions checks to register your vehicle. I love the environment but when I discovered (in California) that they don't actually test the emissions coming out of your car, they only check the computer codes, I smelled a scam.
What's that thing they shove up the exhaust pipe for? I always get the measurements of the exhaust components in PPM so they're measuring something. I've always passed smog tests easily. I just clear all the codes when I pull up to the gas station that does the test even when a check engine light has been on and that's always worked. Even the 1989 Volvo 240 always passes, registering around 10% of the maximum emissions, so I don't see it as that big a deal.
@@55whiplash Where I live they stopped using that thing more than 10 years ago. They only hook up their scan tool to the OBD port and do the test.
red pilled
If the check engine light is off. It's going to pass the sniffer test.....most likely. Unless the catalytic converter is marginal. They stopped doing emissions testing in my area. When they were testing, it was by a Canadian company. I always thought that was fishy. Why couldn't my state find an American company to test my American car emissions. Mine never failed. Probably because I took it out on the freeway before the test and drove to the testing station in 3rd. Got it nice & hot before the test. Hot catalytic converter = cleaner test.
Just a revenue raising instrument.
You gotta love it when Scotty says he may have been mistaken.
We’ve owned 13 Nissan and Infiniti vehicles over the years and have had outstanding luck with them. Nice review on the older Pathfinder. I’d sure consider one.
Hey, Scotty. Thanks for the info on the Nissan Pathfinder. I, too, had heard that the transmissions were problematic; I appreciate you clearing that up. I will keep the Pathfinder in mind when it's time to replace my CX-9.
Radiator Trans cooler can leak Trans fluid in antifreeze. Pink milk shake of death. Do am over ride.
Good afternoon Scotty, hope you and your family are doing well I just got in as you sent the video over I'm going to check it out have a good day and stay safe👐👐👐💯👍
afternoon and thanks you too!
You know when your car is at 200k plus you both did a good job
My hidden gem is this 04 Mitsubishi outlander I got. I'm banging 221k miles and it runs so strong and quite, its honestly quality made as far as reliability goes and considering its AWD, and basically a tiny SUV. It's perfect for me and I highly reccomend first generation Outlander to anybody in need of a cheap and reliable AWD vehicle with surprisingly decent room.
Granted it's not the more popular honda or..what is it, I forgot, it's not toyota is it? The crossover scene of the early 2000s, all where actually pretty good.
But the outlander is vastly overshadowed and the pricing reflects it, you can scoop one of very cheap as compared to the others. (And it's not because its worse)
Great as always. Could you possibly make a printable list of often overlooked maintenance? Like when and what to use on various rubber bushings/seals on suspension components. You have covered so many that I lose track. Would be great to have a checklist.
Love your videos, Scotty! I’ve saved a lot of money learning to do simple repairs on my old Toyota Corolla using your videos.

Hey Scotty, been watching your videos for a while now and I've learned a lot in the time being. The information that I've learned has made me a much shrewder car owner and I feel as though whenever I take my car in to get work done I ACTUALLY know what is being done and I can understand what the mechanic is saying to me!

Thank you Scotty for being nice to the Nissan Pathfinder. I have the Nissan Navara which is the european version of the Nissan Frontier. Mine has the 2.5D engine (I don t think available in the USA). Thank you for the balanced used car brand advice. It's good to know that reasonably reliable pre-owned vehicles can be had for less money than even high mileage used Toyotas.

I like to see ones that have hit the 300K mile mark. The few GM cars I had years, ago they tanked soon after hitting 100K. Hi Scotty, I had a work vehicle Nissan Navara STX 2013 and it was a beast. 275000 km was used a lot in mining areas where the heat an corrosive agents were the biggest factors to destroy any vehicle. Only things replaced apart of the usual oil, filters brakes etc was the steering pump as the system was leaking, throttle body and the cruise control.
Not other issues so far as I know in two years. Fast and great for off roads pulling heavy loads.
It might not be as Toyota but still a decent vehicle. Never had any codes.
