  • After 12 years and an American made movie, Toho finally brings Godzilla back to the theaters of Japan with a new reboot of the atomic behemoth directed by Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno. Was it worth the wait? Or should it have been left beneath the waves? Watch to find out.

    Omg, you did it, at last, it's here!
    Thank you!
    The actually terrorizing, actually mature, escalating, nostalgic and delicate Shin Godzilla.
    It returned to its origins . . .

    I actually loved the classic score but I think it was more pleasing to me since this was my first Japanese godzilla film in theaters so I got a nostalgia kick from it myself.
    Also those back lasers yea my mind was blown from awesomeness as well

      It's not that I hated the classic score, it's just that the audio mixing didn't sound right.

    I heard that the director thought that he felt that audiences would find the suitmation boring so he used CGI but wanted to pay tribute to the past people who stepped in the role so they used motion capture. Also there was an animatronic puppet that was made but ultimately whatever scenes were made for it were cut.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, I've heard that aspect before and I totally disagree with that assessment. Suitmation will always be superior.

    Good stuff sir. I'm really hungry to get to sit down with this film again. I'm still impressed with how well they did creating a very distinct and new type of Goji on film, but still maintained a feel for the original real deal death dealer vibe of the classics. That last shot is still the stuff the of nightmares. Although I'm gonna piggy back off some comments below I'd gladly watch Batman and Robin (mostly for Uma) or the Adam West stuff over "Rises." There's no fun to be had in that trainwreck and I'm personally offended anyone would compare the sharp and focused commentary of "Shin Goji," to that half baked Dickensian disaster :-)

      Hey, look who finally joined the party. :-) They did a very good job on the atmosphere. Oh, and I'm just going to pretend you didn't say you would rather watch Batman & Robin or the Adam West stuff over Rises. :-p

      My bad. I thought you meant the design changes over the years, not in specifically this film. It was a cool idea, though, multiple forms is so cliché these days in Japanese stories, so kind of redundant.

    Despite me being one of the biggest haters of Shin Godzilla, this is a fantastic review. I do want to say that the last time we talked about Shin Godzilla, I said that I didn't hate it but I didn't like it, but as time went on, my opinions change, and let's just say that Shin Godzilla is to me what the Dark Knight Rises is to you. Shin Godzilla is by far my least favorite Godzilla of all time. But, I mainly want to say this(mainly to people that like Shin, maybe even love it), I'm not trying to take away your love for this movie, it's just not for me. And I also want to say that I'm thankful that there are people that can enjoy certain things I just can't. To anyone who is reading this comment that likes Shin Godzilla, do yourselves a honorable favor, and embrace your love for this movie as much as you possibly can, cause if you can love this movie while I can't, then more power to you all.

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork

      lol I don't think Rises is the worst Batman movie ever as it is still far better than B&R and the Adam West stuff, but I get what you are saying. :-p

    • @douayang8976
      @douayang8976 6 лет назад +2

      Yeah... I didn't like it much.. It was kind of boring. To me it felt like this is just a gimmick. Like they did the movie to 1up on 2014 Godzilla. Like, they wanted to make their version more powerful. But, that's it. His atomic breath is way more powerful, yes.... but so what?
      Kaiju no Kami..... Jared Cheeks... In the original concept... They were going to have either a two headed Godzilla... or two Godzilla's (One emerging out of the 1st one). And the tail was supposed to be another head, shooting atomic beams.
      So I'm like, "A two headed Godzilla... with a head for a tail.... like 3 heads... you mean, like.... Gihdorha??? So are we watching Godzilla???? Or are we watching Gihdorah emerging out of something that looks like Godzilla????"
      Really..... What the HELL...!!!???

  • @professorwh042
    @professorwh042 6 лет назад +1

    Actually, the reason it’s a 3.1 audio mix is that Anno wanted it in mono like the ‘54 Film, but Toho wouldn’t let him, as not every theater in Japan would accept just mono, so it was then repurposed to 3.1
    Now, if the original audio recordings of the ‘54 Movie still exist, then they can exist in whatever sound format possible. Depending on the number of microphones used, theoretically a 5.1 or 7.1 mix of the music could be possible.

      It's not really a remake though. It's another version. Remaking would mean they were retelling the same story over with the same characters and stuff. That's like saying Kong Skull Island is a remake of King Kong when it isn't. I see nothing wrong with the cutting away from the monster though, it builds up the anticipation. I don't need to have everything in my face Bayformers style.

    I personally don't like the Shin Godzilla look. It's by no means my least favorite look of him and him transforming was also kinda unique.
    But the eyes, arms and teeth are way too small. The tail is too long, his legs are to massive. (And that puts the 94 Godzilla to shame.)
    And I'm not really sure if I like the glowing texture or him having beam attacks used from his spins. It feels unnecessary.
    As for the movie it's self it's honestly a mix bag. Because while the characters are funny I don't think there needed to be that many characters and I think a lot of the diologe could be trimmed down.
    I like the effects more than the other 2010's movies, though I'm still not a fan of the CGI technology as opposed to practical.
    The soundtrack was alright but it reused a lot of other songs.
    And while I'm definitely glad that Godzilla is the main monster, and they tried to give it a modern approach.
    I honestly much prefer how they did it in the 1984 version cuz it just felt much more focused and I like the story, effects, the characters, and sound much more.
    It's by no means my least favorite Godzilla movie. I'm just not a fan of Shin Godzilla's look, and the movie was meh to me.

      First of all, there is the character of Kayoko. She is supposed to be a second generation Japanese-American who is native to the country, yet her actress clearly struggles speaking English. It would’ve been more excusable if the movie was never intended to be seen internationally, but sadly in this day and age, every movie ever made is bound to be so and our suspension of disbelief is thrown out the window. Seriously, Toho was able to get anglophone actors from The States back on the 60’s in the form of Nick Adams and Russ Tamblyn, so would’ve it bankrupted Toho to get a native-English speaker this time around?!
      And secondly, there is the audio. Hideaki Anno is really trying to grind it in that he has a style by showing severely out-dated stock-music and sound effects riddled throughout the film, which just takes you out of the picture. The laziness of Shiro Sagisu using recycled Evangelion tracks does not help either. Why use out-dated tracks from a bygone era when modern remixes of said tracks such as the ostinato were plentifully available?
      Finally, I don’t buy the back - and tail-lasers, it’s just absurd. It’s proof that just because you try something different, it does not lead to quality .
      The more time goes by, the less I like this film. Just wanted to be honest.

Other than that... I still prefer the 2014 Godzilla. This one feels like a gimmick. Like, "Oh.... look. Our's is stronger because his atomic breath is way better....." But, thats about it...
    And they're planning on making a sequel by 2021??? Really????????? That's long?????? By then, I wouldn't care anymore. The American Godzilla would of dominated the big screen when that comes out... that's if it even comes out.

  • @Randomshit2727
    @Randomshit2727 6 лет назад +1

    Kaiju no kami I didn’t hate or love it but the problem is the changes they did to Godzilla . The evolution was an interesting idea but we never seen Godzilla do it. He shoots lasers instead of his famous atomic breath and he shoot lasers out from his spikes with which supposed like his nuclear pulse. Do get me wrong when he show his lasers from his mouth ,tail ,and spikes was awesome to look at but it’s not a honor trademark of the character. The first two evolution forms look really silly and goofy kind takes you out of the movie. The music was good I feel like Akira ifukube scores was nice to listen too , just sounds like you hearing them from a speaker. The design for Godzilla 4th form I love because it reminds of the original Godzilla combined with burning Godzilla it looks badass. But Godzilla in the movie is fat like Heisei series which I’m ok with. The movie is a little boring when godzilla it a lot of fun. With it flaws it still a good Godzilla movie.

    Overall, it's a political movie with Godzilla. Before I watched it, I heard so many warnings to avoid the subtitled version and better go for the dubbed version instead, because the dialogues are going extremely fast and it's impossible to read the subtitle.
    Even though this is not the best Godzilla movie to me, I hope there's a sequel for this movie, not a bunch of cliffhangers like most of the millennium series.

      I hate watching live action dubbed as the audio always looks out of synch to me. The nice thing with the BD is that it doesn't have all of the Japanese text on top of the English subtitles, so that is good.

      Are you talking about the 2014 US movie? If so, I'm not sure I agree with that. I think I might like the US one just a little bit more.

    • @justinsigler1565
      @justinsigler1565 6 лет назад +1

      Kaiju no Kami yes, and if you did seen that movie. You would know that there was little Godzilla in it, until the end and more of Malcolm dad and his son

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  6 лет назад +1

      I had no issue with the amount of Godzilla in the movie as it made up for a grand final battle. My issue is how one dimensional the son was.

      Kaiju no Kami Ren Osugi who played the Prime Minister in this film passed away less than a week ago. Rest in peace. He in fact lived near my house. I've met him about ten times within this decade. Every time we met, we greeted each other. He was warm and nice.

    Honestly, this movie, in my opinion, is just meh. It just felt like it was lacking something, and no, that something isn't the lack of monsters. It lacked a sense of gravitas.
    The '54 film, GMK, and even Godzilla 2014, KOTM, and GVK all had a sense of gravitas in a way.
    Throw in probably the least interesting portrayal of Godzilla and well, you get (IMO) a pretty "meh" installment in the franchise.

      Adam Guarnella yeah yeah. Say what you must. But shin Godzilla is just a much a king of the monsters as 2014, final wars or Godzilla earth. And to your other comment, plenty of Godzilla’s have had different colored atomic breath. (Burning Godzillas Red spiral ray) but you know that’s just me. :)

  • @alankohn6709

    I have very mixed feelings about this movie and most of them negative. First off it is a spectacular film and watchable film with some nice cinematography and some top notch scenes of destruction. The acting is fine to good and as a stinging indictment of the governments handling of the Earthquake and tsunami it works with certain moments of intentional comedy at the officials expense. but that is where my positive feelings end.
    I dislike the new origin story it feels like change for changes sake and the early bug eyed land form spewing blood out of the gills annoyed me more than shocked me. The final form for the most part looks fine but the predator style splitting mandible and second head in it's tail are stupid. The atomic breath is handled well but Godzilla's breath is blue not purple and by this point I was annoyed enough for this to tick me off more than it should of in hind sight.
    The film was obviously shot on digital cameras and it shows, certain scenes look like cheap shots from a TV show. It may of been my growing annoyance with the film but the "American" advisor who speaks English like a speak and spell just aggravated me probably more than it should. but the final straw is the poor mans alien rip off's separating from the tail they can f*ck that idea right off it is beyond stupid and whom ever came up with the idea should be taken out of the back of Toho and given a damm good kicking till they understand how mind numbingly stupid this idea is.
    Overall it is not an unwatchable film but it is badly flawed with a script full of recycled ideas the blood coagulant from Space Godzilla, the multiple forms from Hedorah, the nuclear threat from Godzilla 1984 and the multiple monsters from Destroyha. I have watched this movie several times since I first saw it wondering if it was just a knee jerk reaction and my opinion hasn't changed, when Toho does their next Godzilla I hope they just ignore this film ever happened. While not the worst Godzilla movie, Godzilla's revenge still holds that honour, this is a poor Godzilla movie ranking behind the worst of the Showa era. It was an interesting experiment but one that failed.

      I don't mind the new origin story since it worked for what they were going for, but yeah, there are a lot of flaws in this one that keep it from being as great as the hype made it out to be. I like it, but I don't love it.

    you should have said something about the dub

    • @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork
      @TokuAndAnimationNewsNetwork  6 лет назад

      I haven't watched the dub. Plus, I wasn't doing a review of the BD, just the movie. The only reason I covered the dubs for KKvsG and G2K is because there were a lot of differences.
      Though, I never did a comparison for Raids Again since I have never seen Gigantis and I plan to do somthing special for the dubs to 54 and 84. I was hoping we would get the 1985 version of the film by now, but that seems highly unlikely of ever happening, so I'll have to download a copy.
