Another fact that makes this song even more awesome. La Bamba is a Mexican dance song in Spanish. But Ritchie Valens didn't really speak Spanish. He had to memorize the lyrics.

Correction. : he wasn't a native speaker but he knew the language fairly well. One of the things the movie didn't get right.
He didn't speak fluent Spanish, but could understand his mother and speak a fair Spanglish.

Richie Valens died tragically at 17, only 8 months into his music career, yet look at how much great music this young man created! I often wonder, how he would have continued to influence the evolution/progression of rock and roll over the generations. FANTASTIC movie about his life, La Bamba which is definitely worth a watch! Great soundtrack, too!

This song was recorded thru Delphi records in 1958 as a "b" side to Donna. Richard Steven Valenzuela was 17 years old and still in high school when he was signed to his record label. Sadly his musical career was only 8 months long as he died in a plane crash 5 miles north of clear lake Iowa on 2/3/1959 along with Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and pilot Roger Peterson.

La Bamba is an old Mexican sailors song but he covered it into a rock and roll. We don't even know what a "Bamba" is, honestly, because it seems to be old pirates lingo, but for the song it seems to reference sort of a dance.

This song went to #22 on the Billboard charts in 1958. And it ranked #345 on the Rolling Stones Magazine top 500 songs in Rock and Roll history.
His other song which was the flipside was" Oh Donna" which went to #3 on billboard also in 1958.
Glad to see your doing another Ritchie Valens song. Please react to "Oh Donna" and "OOH' My Head."
Note: Ritchie himself could not speak Spanish. He was born in Tacoma California in 1941. He had to learn the song, and its pronunciation by doing it over and over again. With a Ticano Rock and Roll beat. "La Bamba was a Mexican dance."
The rest as they say is history.

The movie about his life is titled "La Bamba". It's one of just a few movies that makes me cry every time I see it, even if I just catch the tail end of the movie. So sad how he died, not only so young and at the start of his popularity, but dying in a plane crash of all things. He had always been afraid of flying because of bad recurrent dreams, and avoided it until that fateful night. You'll have to watch the movie to see why he boarded that plane that night. It's well worth watching.

"The Day the Music Died" A lot of hidden references in the song including Elvis, Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Hell Angels, The Beatles, Charles Manson, and many others. The day the music died was the day the America Lost its innocence. The song is from 1971, 12 years after the plane crash. The Vietnam War was still going on as well.

I was 9-10yrs when the biopic La Bamba staring Lou Diamond Phillips came out. I still remember breaking the song La Bamba do & translating it to english. I just can't remember if it was for either elementary school Spanish lessons or a Cub Scouts project. I do remember it was with the help of a classmates mom who was a native speaker of Spanish. She taught Spanish lessons in our schools a few times a week & her son was in my Cub Scouts troop. I remember it was an old folk song about a dance (Bamba). The narrator was hesitant to do the dance (Bamba) as he was inexperienced & inhibited.
The line... Yo no soy marinero, Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan, soy capitan, soy capitan. Translates... I'm not a sailor, I'm not a sailor, I'm a captain, I'm a captain, I'm a captain. Basically saying he's a refined captain uncomfortable with letting loose not a sailor on shore leave setting aside his inhibitions drinking & dancing. I believe that's the gist.

Los Lobos played in the film and created their own version. Even made a music video in 1988
Oh and here's the lyric translation
    Para bailar La Bamba
    Para bailar La Bamba
Se necessita una poca de gracia

Para mi, para ti, ay arriba, ay arriba
    Ay, arriba arriba

A bit of grace for me, for you
    Now come on, come on!
    Now come on, come on!
for you I’ll be, for you I’ll be, for you, I’ll be.
    Yo no soy marinero
Yo no soy marinero, soy capitan
    Soy capitan, soy capitan
    Bamba, bamba
    Bamba, bamba
    Bamba, bamba, bamba

    I’m not a sailor, I’m a captain
    I’m a captain, I’m a captain
    Bamba, bamba

    Para bailar La Bamba

    To dance the Bamba
    to dance the Bamba
one needs a bit of grace
A bit of grace for me, for you
    now come on, come on!
    To do the Bamba
    You need bit of grace
    Go follow my lead
And I take you to the place
When we get movin’ and jawin’
And then we shake and we shimmy
    This rock-n-roll beat
Will make your head go dizzy
    Do the monkey
    Queue to the monkey
We go twist and twist! twist!
    Take this…
    Get on, get on
    Let’s all clap
    Now sing!
    Para bailar La Bamba
    Para bailar La Bamba
Se necessita una poca de gracia
    Una poca de gracia
Para mi, para ti, ay arriba, ay arriba

Using a Spanish to English translator, I got the following.........
    To dance La Bamba
    To dance La Bamba
    It takes a little grace
A little grace For me, for you
    And up, and up
    And up, and up
For you I will be, for you I will be, for you
    I am not a sailor
    I am not a sailor, I am a captain
    I'm a captain, I'm a captain
    Bamba, bamba
    Bamba, bamba
    Bamba, bamba, bam
    To dance La Bamba
    To dance La Bamba
    It takes a little grace
    A little grace
Pa' mi, pa' ti, and up, and up
    Rrrr, ha-ha
    To dance La Bamba
    To dance La Bamba
    It takes a little grace
    A little grace
Pa' mi, pa' ti, and up, and up
    And up, and up
For you I will be, for you I will be, for you I will be
    Bamba, bamba
    Bamba, bamba
    Bamba, bamba

Of you're doing a deep dive on early Rock & Roll you gotta check out Chuck Berry. He really laid the foundation for what was to follow. He is the most influential early Rock artist..

I'm back just to let you know this song is about the dance called The Labamba. He's telling everybody how to do it in the song. There's a part where he's trying to tell people that he's the captain not a follower, but in the song it's kinda backwards, because that's just how Spanish is, in the song he says he's not a soldier, he's the captain, so he wants you to follow him.

    La Bamba translated into English:
    To dance the Bamba,
To dance the Bamba
One needs a bit of grace
A bit of grace for me, for you
Now come on, come on!
Now come on, come on!
for you I’ll be, for you I’ll be, for you, I’ll be.
    I’m not a sailor
I’m not a sailor, I’m a captain
I’m a captain, I’m a captain
Bamba, bamba
bamba, bamba
 bamba, bamba, bamba..
    To dance the Bamba
to dance the Bamba
one needs a bit of grace
A bit of grace for me, for you
 now come on, come on!
    To do the Bamba
You need bit of grace
Go follow my lead
And I take you to the place
When we get movin’ and jawin’
And then we shake and we shimmy
This rock-n-roll beat
Will make your head go dizzy
    Do the monkey
Queue to the monkey
We go twist and twist! twist!
Take this…
    Get on, get on
Let’s all clap
Now sing!
    To dance the Bamba
to dance the Bamba
one needs a bit of grace
A bit of grace for me, for you
now come on, come on
now come on, come on
for you I’ll be, for you I’ll be, for you I’ll be
    I’m not a sailor
I’m not a sailor, I’m a captain
I’m a captain, I’m a captain
Bamba, bamba
bamba, bamba
 bamba, bamba, bamba..
