La Bamba (1987) Movie Reaction and Review!
Join Sammy aka The Mexcellence as he begins his Movie Reviewing Series of "CHICANO MOVIES!" In the first episode, Mex reviews the iconic chicano film starring Esai Morales and Lou Diamond Phillips with 1987's La Bamba! Keep in mind, Sammy has never seen this movie before!
Directed by Luis Valdez, "La Bamba" follows the life and career of Chicano rock 'n' roll star Ritchie Valens. The film depicts the impact Valens' career had on the lives of his half-brother Bob Morales, his girlfriend Donna Ludwig and the rest of his family during the artist's rise in the 1950s. Ultimately, Ritchie Valens dies in a plane crash that also took the lives of Buddy Holly and JP The Big Bopper Richardson in an even known as "The Day The Music Died."
This review includes movie clips from the full movie, including the trailer, discussion on the music and soundtrack, Ritchie Valens singing We Belong Together, La Bamba, Donna, Come On Let's Go, Los Lobos covers, Bob and Rosie fighting, Ritchie Dies scene, RITCHIEEEEE scene, the ending and more!
I HOPE YOU ENJOYED THIS REACTION AND REVIEW, AND PLEASE BE SURE TO TRIPLE-LIKE, SHARE, AND COMMENT ON THE MOVIE YOU WANT TO SEE ME DO NEXT!

The real Bob Morales (Ritchie's brother) supposedly said that the movie was nice in its portrail of him. BTW, he passed away only about 6 months ago (early 2020 about the time Kobe Bryant died) of cancer. I truly believe that Esai Morales should have, IMO, been nominated for an Academy Award.

My step dad grew up next door to Ritchie and his brother. He told us that Bob would break into cars in the neighborhood and always cause a racket.

From what I understand, many of Bob's problems stemmed from his alcohol and drug abuse - it apparently got even worse after Ritchie died, understandably. Not to excuse what he did, by his own admission he was quite awful and abusive in his youth. By all accounts, he turned his life around in the '70s and lived the last 40-50 years of his life a changed man. Also, he died in September 2018.

Interesting facts about the making of La Bamba, Esai Morales originally auditioned for the role of Ritchie and Lou Diamond Philips auditioned for the role of Bob. The old lady you see in the party sitting on the couch was infact Ritchie and Bobs mom. During the coin toss scene Ritchie younger sister Connie was on set and broke down crying saying ‘Why did you go? Why did you have to go?’

Story has it that on the set the day they were filming the scene where Ritchie gets on the plane Connie, Ritchie's younger sister, was on set and between takes she walked over to Lou and wanted to talk to him. She then grabbed him and started crying and shouting at him "Ritchie! Why did you get on that plane!?" over and over again. Connie later said the movie was in many ways a catharsis for her and she finally got to say goodbye to he brother.

Bob's character was so well-played and intense. That last scene when he screams Ritchie in that guttural, primal scream while Sleepwalk plays is haunting and heartbreaking. It gets me every single time.

La Bamba is my favorite movie of all time! I am also a Chicana who didn’t know how to speak Spanish growing up lol. I’m the youngest of 5 so my first language was English. The way I learned Spanish was when I was around 13 or 14 and started watching novelas🤣🤣 .. it worked great for me! 🤷🏻‍♀️ … thank for posting this video! It was so good!

Personally, I would love to see more Chicano movies. I have always had a fondness for the lifestyle and ethics of my Mexican friends. Coming from a very I think typical Irish American family it was impossible not to see the similarities in family life, work ethic, faith and yes of course fighting and partying. Nothing but love for my brown brothers! ♥️😎

At first i didn't know if I'd like this style of reaction/review but this was the best movie reaction ive seen RUclips. You made me respect Esai Morales's portrayal of Bob so much more. I've seen this movie dozens of times since i was a child and as a white man i was able to see into the Mexican/Latino life and may be a reason why most of my friends and even past roomates were all Hispanic of some type. I always felt pitty or sadness towards Bob despite how he was and you put it right on point. But in the end knowing what happens and the truth to it all, made me tear up again as it always does. Thank you for your video.

Wow. My dad and I watched this movie well over a hundred times. Ritchie Valens songs were some of my favorites as a kid. My dad could play all the songs. I believe the soundtrack was provided by Los Lobos. My dad was a huge fan of those guys. They deserve so much more attention. Great, legendary group. Haven’t checked but they should be in rock n roll hall of fame for La Bamba alone but their own catalogue speaks for itself. I also enjoyed Gary Busey with the Buddy Holly Story.

Not my place to tell you, but I was told by a friend while anyone can self-identify however they want when it comes to Latinx it use to be where they were from. For instance, Chicano was used by Mexican-Americans who lived in the US but not Mexicans living in Mexico.

Great video about a great movie. One thing I think you missed is just how Ritchie had a natural talent for music , bob had a natural talent for art. Drew all the posters for Ritchie’s concert at the beginning . But while Ritchie talent was nurtured and supported from the beginning Bob didn’t receive the same love. He feels he could have been a big thing too if he was given the chance like Ritchie . The relationship between the two brothers and the performances of the actors is what makes this movie IMO.

I thought of how sad it was that the momma seem to favor one son over the other just like the momma of Doughboy and Ricky in Boyz N The Hood: One son seems to be in the streets a lot, in trouble, and on a destructive path and the other is bright and full of potential with so much promise of being successful and in the end, the son with the seemingly bright future and shining potential, is the one who dies in the end.

Well the movie happen in 1987, by that time, Ritchie, Buddy and Bopper were legends, with American Pie in 71, and the day the music died, it was common knowledge that he would die in a plane crash. Even with out the crash in the trailer we all know it was going to end tragic. My mom was crying though out the movie because she lived though 59. If you had not seen it, you need to see the Buddy Holly movie.

Zoot Suits were worn by youth in the 40s considered radical and un-American. My older sister was a pachuca of the 50s. I was a chicana of the 60s. Chicano was what we labeled ourselves during the time of political organizer and activist Corky Gonzales. My daughter was a chola. All in all we're La Raza.
Zoot Suit is a 1981 film adaptation of the Broadway play Zoot Suit. Both the play and film were written and directed by Luis Valdez
