Ritchie was on the same plane with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper that tragically crashed killing all on board, and the inspiration for the song American Pie by Don McLean….”the day the music died”
So sad when in the movie his girlfriend Donna is listening to the radio when they report his death
@@deesee3622 what movie?
@@iaw1stperson La Bamba - the movie about Ritchie Valens; it came out in 1987 I think
so you know this is not actually ritchie valens' version but the band los lobos' cover for the film on valens' life.
fun fact: this version by los lobos was the ONLY song not in english to make ROLLING STONE's top 500 rock songs ever. i LOVE this version ❤
I'm not sure if you made it through the video, but he does go to the actual Richie version of the song....
He was just one of the 3 that died that night with the the BIG BOPPER,BUDDY HOLLY they died in a plane accident
That's actually the band Los Lobos singing a cover of Ritchie's song from the movie La Bomba. The actor is Lou Diamond Phillips. Both Los Lobos version and Ritchie's are great
Did you not finish the video? pretty sure he finishes it off with the proper version of the song...
I loved that movie. Lou diamond Phillips was great!
AND he reads on the video that it's a Los Mobos cover from the movie, La Bamba, starring Lou Diamond Philips. He figured all that out by himself.
Here's what it says in English:
"To dance the Bamba
To dance the Bamba it's necessary to have a little grace
a little grace for me and you, Ariba! Ariba!
Ariba! Ariba! For me and you, for me and you, for me and you.
I am not a mariner
I am not a mariner
I'm a captain, I'm a captain, I'm a captain
Ba ba Bamba
Ba ba Bamba
Ba ba Bamba"
The movie is so good! Ritchie couldn’t speak Spanish and absolutely killed this song❤️❤️❤️
Yes, this was from a movie based on the life of Ritchie Valens. Good movie. Ritchie Valens was ahead of his time and very talented. Such a tragedy how he died. But his music will live on forever. RIP🙏🏻. Yes, please do more reactions of Los Lobos!
So glad you did this reaction. Love your channel!
Another song Richie Valens did was "Donna" or "Oh, Donna." Very beautiful love song.
We belong together is a good song too
This.
absolute banger
This is the song from the film ‘La Bamba’ starring Lou Diamond Phillips as Richie Valens
This is from the movie about his life. That is the actor Lou Diamond Phillips. It's a good movie. Tragically he died in the same plane crash that killed Buddy Holly. He was so young.
And that’s what the song American Pie is about
No. Lou Diamond Phillips still lives. Ritchie Valens died in plane crash.
On February 3, 1959, on what has become known as "The Day the Music Died", Valens died in a plane crash in Iowa, an accident that also claimed the lives of fellow musicians Buddy Holly and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as pilot Roger Peterson. Valens was 17 at the time of his death. In 2001, Valens was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Great job figuring out it wasn't the real song. Love that you decided to dive into that right away. Great reaction. It's so clear you're about the education, not just trying to get monetized (NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT, tho).
BANG ON with the "innovative" comment too, by the way, because that's why it's so terrible he died right away in the plan crash that was the inspiration of American Pie by Don McLean, as was said elsewhere. La Bamba, the movie, is all about the lead-up to what Ritche Valens' life was heading to right before he died with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper.
And it's DEVASTATING to think about now, because what would a prolonged career by him have done for the Latin community's visibility in America for over six decades? Gone too soon.
Buddy Holly is the next one to listen to as the American Pie tribute continues -- "Every Day" is my FAVE by them, and you could spin that line to listening to Pearl Jam's cover of Every Day, if you can find it, and watching "Stand By Me," the amazing 1980s' coming-of-age movie that is based in the 1950s on one adventure-filled weekend of 4 13-year-old boys, one of the best movies ever -- and a real great intro to some '50s music you haven't yet heard, but this is one of the songs from that soundtrack. (The movie is based on an amazing Stephen King short story, FYI.)
It's Lou Diamond Phillips playing Ritchie Valens in the movie "La Bamba".....he did a pretty good job of it.
That clicking sound is probably done with castanets or a guiro.
It's all good, brother - another reactor channel made the exact same mistake, thinking this was the Ritchie Valens version. (On a semi-related side note, the guy playing Valens in this video, Lou Diamond Phillips, aside from being a terrific actor, is a really great guy who interacts with his followers on Twitter all the time -- I've had a few short conversations with him myself.)
People did go absolutely nuts back in the day, and so huge as a Latino crossover onto the Pop Charts
Ritchie Valens died in a plane crash 1959 along with Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. It's referred to as "The Day the Music Died". Ritchie had never flown and was on the plane because someone else couldn't make it.
2/3/59. The Big Bopper was J.P. Richardson Jr. Don McLean's "American Pie" is partially his reaction to that tragedy
@@surlechapeau Yes! American Pie
It was Waylon Jennings who missed that fateful flight. Rolling Stone Magazine published an article about it in the '60s.
@@karolyn8644 Thank you!
It happened twice actually... Look into the death of Melanie Thornton & most of Passion Fruit (both crazy good pop acts on the rise). If you are a music act DON'T BOARD A BLOODY SMALL ASS PLANE!
This is Lou Diamond Phillips playing a memorable version of Richie Valens! this is a mexican-american classic movie! from the movie La Bamba from the 80s. so crazy ur reacting to this! love it! Richie Valens was a Mexican-American who hit it big in the 50s and died at super early age i believe 18/19. He is referred to in the 'Day the Music Died" cuz he died with 2 other legends "the big bopper" and " buddy holly" in a plane crash! u should definitely check out La Bamba! describes my cultural background (sorta) very proud anyway! and the song " American Pie" by Don Mcclean is dedication song to that tragic event!
He was only 17 when he died, Buddy Holly was 22. So much talent lost at a young age
You are very clever to notice that this was not the original Ritchie Valens. But the movie was very good, and the Actor who plays him does a good job of telling his story, plus he also plays very strong Latino activist type roles.
And this song is why I discovered The Gypsy Kings! Great tune!
Great song. Every traditional band in the Southwest knows this song, and when they play it at dances nobody can stay in their seats. It even had me dancing when I lived in New Mexico! It is downright infectious.
Like everybody says this is the movie version by Los Lobos. However this is also the version that was #1 sometime in 1987
Thank you for looking up the original version by Ritchie. He died way too young, 17. You should watch the movie La Bamba, it's about his last few years of life.
This is not the original recording by Ritchie Valens!
@@opaulamorgan4265 It's at the end
This is from the movie about him. It also brings in Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper and the death of the 3 of them in the plane crash. Los Lobos is such a GREAT group... you need to listen to that band! The movie is great and of course sad at the end. Also, if you get into that type of music, look up Kumbia Kings... some great music and will also make you feel like jumping up and dancing!!
Yes. Please react to Los Lobos, start with, “How will the wolf survive”, or maybe just jump straight into “Kiko”. Either way is good.
So sad when Richie passed away in the airplane crash with the big bopper and buddy hollie...so young
I´m from Veracruz, Mexico, and La Bamba is an ancient song from the Jarocho culture of my state. It is played by musicians known as "jaraneros" they are called that way because they play "jaranas" (a kind of small guitar).
Lou Diamond Phillips did a masterful job doing this movie. One of my favorites.
One of my favourite film. So uplifting and so devastating
You should totally do a movie reaction to this film “La Bamba”.
It’s about Ritchie Valens life which was cut tragically short.
This is the original version, but yes, it does come from the movie La Bamba.
The blonde guy watching from the wings is Brian Setzer from The Stray Cats, who played Eddie Cochrane in the movie.
Jay, ya know the song American Pie from Don McLean? In the first verse he talks about the plane crash. He's singing about the 1959 plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Big Bopper, & Richie Valens. The day the music died......
This scene is from the Movie La Bamb” this is a true story this is one of my favorite movies a must see, him and other big names died in a plan crash. Great movie my mother loved Richie Valens he was Mexican it was back than
I remember my Dad made me watch this movie. Such a sad story, but great song! Maybe you will want to watch the Movie? On your other channel?
He was only 17yrs old when he recorded this song. And also 17 yrs old when he tragically died in a plane crash. Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper who were also on the plane with him, tragically also lost their lives in that crash. That day is famously known and referred to “THE DAY MUSIC DIED”. It also was very well know that Ritchie Valens had a horrible fear of flying. And only flew as a very last resort. Otherwise he would just travel to his gigs and shows on a tour bus. It’s also documented that Ritchie and the others were never even supposed to be on a plane that night. But after the heater busted on their tour bus and it was the middle of winter in Chicago. So Buddy Holly was able last minute to charter a small private plane that night so they wouldn’t have to freeze to death in the tour bus on their way to their next show. But the plane didn’t have enough seats for everyone. And Ritchie’s seat on the plane originally was for also famous musician Waylon Jennings. But Ritchie had been battling a horrible cold for the last few days. And with Waylon knowing that he offered Ritchie his seat on the plane….. but only if Ritchie won a quick game of “Heads or Tails”. And with reports stating that Ritchie yelled out “HEADS” and I unfortunately not knowing that it would be that coin that would be deciding he unfortunate faith. So with Ritchie winning the coin toss, her boarded that plane while Waylon Jennings shutting the door to the plane from the outside, quickly making a dash for the tour bus that was about to leave for the next destination. And Waylon very much knowing that he was going to be in for a very uncomfortable freezing night of travel on the tour bus. And about 20 minutes after take off in white out conditions, all they know is the plane met it’s fate and crashed into a near bay field, killing all in board including 17yr old up and comer Ritchie Valens. It’s also been reported that Waylon Jennings for many many years following has suffered horrible “survivors guilt” and horrible depression and substance abuse stemming from that fateful night.
Fabulous - two for one!
The Actor who played the biopic of Ritchie Valens entitled La Bamba in 1987 is actually a Filipino-American (The Philippines, my home country was colonized by Spain for 333 years but we don't speak Spanish) Actor Luo Diamond Philips (The one singing and playing the guitar in the video).
I think he’s mixed with other heritage too right?
@@deesee3622 Filipino-American: Filipino brown and American white.
Richie Valens was one of the 3 that were "The Day The Music Died" as it's called. Is when Richie, Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash. RIP 😥😥💔🎶
“ They don’t know who their messing with . My granddaddy was a full-blooded Yaqui indian ! “
You are busy today with uploading and I love it.
This was a great movie about his life
One of the first CD's I ever bought was the soundtrack to La Bamba. So glad you took the time to also react to Ritchie's original version. As for Los Lobos, they have a treasure trove of music to react to from a long career. A good start would be "How Will the Wolf Survive?" Also "I Got Loaded" which was used in the movie Bull Durham.
This was the movie about Ritchie Valens......
From the movie about his life "La Bamba" named after his number one hit of the same name. This was a recreation of his last concert before he died in a plane crash with Buddy Holly and the big bopper JP Richardson. He was only 17 when he died.
This is actually from La Bamba the movie starring Lou diamond Phillips
That was a pretty awesome movie
I hope Hollywood doesn’t remake this
Here’s the link to the actual song
ruclips.net/video/Jp6j5HJ-Cok/видео.html
The clicking sound in Ritchie Valens' version is made by CLAVES - short wooden sticks which are tapped together to give rhythm in Cuban and Latin music like salsa and merengue
Richie was for a brief time, Americas sweetheart. He was a promising talent for sure. Los Lobos does a lot of Valense cover songs, they have also done a couple of movies sound tracks. You might enjoy Heaven by them, I think it was their biggest chart topper
Heaven was Los Lonely Boys, not Los Lobos.
@@reverendB , ty, I stand corrected :)
One of my favorite songs/movies! La Bamba reminds me of Parang music (Spanish folk music played at Christmas time in Trinidad) ❤❤
Try his song Oh Donna
The video was from the movie "La Bamba," a great (but sad) movie about Richie Valnce's life, and death in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly.
Richie Valens was only a young kid when his career started to take off & only 17yrs old when he was kill in a plane along with Buddy Holly & The Big Bopper, so tragic. The movie La Bamba is good & sad especially at the end.
Glad you caught my request doood. i knew you'd love it :D Just gotta watch that movie now to hear his story. a real tragedy
Do we belong together by Richie Valens'
This is actually Los Lobos covering La Bamba.
Castanets. That's the clicky sound. Cheers.
I love Los Lobos and they have a very deep catalogue worth exploring as they are probably America's most underrated band of all time.
no, not castanets. castanets are used in flamenco dancing. this is someone hitting a maraca with a stick or maybe even a cowbell.
You're right. It is a movie, in which Loud Diamond Phillips played Richie Valens. Lip singing, of course, to the real Richie Valens.
Song from México. Is very good.
Definitely react to more Los Lobos, they are really good. The soundtrack from Desperado is the best movie soundtrack!
Also need to check out LOS LOBOS band cover LIVE concert!!
Good to see you young man great reaction as usual thank you so much great work
Both are great!
Yes YES Ay Caramba watching from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 good show📻the Beatles copie this song to meke TWIST AND SHOUT 👿GREAT SONGS
It wasn't the early 50's it was the late 50's . Ritchie Valens died in a plane in 1959.at age 17.
It is a show or a movie made in 1987 called LA BAMBA. It tells the story of the real Richie Valens, before and after he became famous and when he dead
So happy you also played the original. Ritchie was way ahead of his time and it's so sad to think he was only 17 when he died. He died in the same plane crash as Buddy Holly (age 22) and JP Richardson (aka The Big Bopper). The crash that inspired Don Maclean to write American Pie. The day the music died, so much talent taken from us. Other great songs from Ritchie are "Donna" which he wrote for his girlfriend, and "Come On let's go". Also please check out Buddy Holly...an absolute legend
Since it's Christmas would you react to Dolly's "Mary Did you Know?" She sang it last year on TV for Christmas 2020, and she blew that song out of the water! It's a testament to her talent and voice even after 50 years!!! I don't know any other artist who is still going strong after 50 years and still sounds the same! It's a baffling mystery how gifted she is. I mean who can still sing like that at 74 years old!!!??? I was gobsmacked when I heard her sing this last year. Sometimes, especially after hearing this song sung with a voice that sounds like that of a 20 year old coming out of a 74 year old, I start to believe she is really an angel bc she truly has a supernatural voice and this song proves it. I've been a Dolly fan her whole career and this was the best ever. You have to hear it. Here's the link:
ruclips.net/video/5JAW_7BAs-g/видео.html
Dancing in my chair ... thank you Ritchie Valens. :)
A sad, but interesting note: When Ritchie was a kid, there was a mid-air crash of two planes over his school while kids were out on the playground. He wasn't at school that day, but developed a fear of airplanes and flying as a result. He died two years later in the plane crash with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Good on you, JayVee for taking the time to find the original by Valens, playing it and reacting to it. You're the genuine, authentic, real deal!
It was an old well known folk song that Ritchie put a rock and roll spin to.
I still cry watching this movie
Ritchie Valens version is incredible. Los Lobos are no slouches, but Richie Valens version is just so full of life & joy.
Try the real version by him, this is the cover from the movie
Wonderful video. I loved that you played the original too. The movie was huge and definitely helped introduce that amazing music into the mainstream.
this is from the movie Labamba from the late 80s. played by lou diamond philips and the singing is los labos int his case
Yep 2nd one is the real Ritchie! He was amazing! Lost too soon at 17
The last guy you showed is Ritchie Valens. The first guy is Lou Diamond Philips from the movie La Bamba made in the 70's.It is said Ritchie's mother heard about his death on the radio. The family got some closure with this movie.
I really like how you listen to both versions, maybe that's a video series idea! Compare original songs to modern popular versions.
This song (the Los Lobos version of 1987) went #1 in the US and was one of only 4 Spanish songs to hit the top 10 Billboard chart until "Despacito" in 2017 (which also went #1). The Ritchie Valens version of "La Bamba" got to #22 in 1959.
Lou Diamond Philips actually met The Valenzuela family and became very good friends with them during and after the movie was made.
I don't know why I'm not getting my notifications, but the 2nd song was the real Ritche Valens. R.I.P.
Movie is Based on the life of ritchie valenz he died on a plane with two other 1950s artists at 18 yrs old .and became first mexican american artist
Great song and GREAT MOVIE!!! A must see!
The thing about the song is that it is a folk song & the lyrics change depending on who sings it 💚💚💚❤❤❤
Should definitely check out the La Bamba movie, it was a part of my childhood growing up ❤️
Good candidates for movie reaction double feature: The Buddy Holly Story followed by La Bamba
A very underrated Christmas song is “A Spaceman Came Travelling” by Chris De Burgh.
And now I need to rewatch this movie. Great movie, LDP does a fantastic job.
This is lou diamond Phillips playing Ritchie in the film La Bamba, Ritchie died in the plane crash that also killed buddy Holly and the big bopper
Lou diamond Phillips great actor. You should watch this movie bud. Lou got few good movies, young guns, and stand and deliver.
The actor is Lou Diamond Phillips who played Ritche Valence
This clip is from a movie , great tune from the past❤
Here’s a good classic soul artist, Isaac Hayes. My favorites are “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”, “Walk on By”, “I Stand Accused” and “The Look of Love”.
Rip Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly & The Big Bopper February 3rd 1959 the day the music died
So glad you went back to find the original. He died in the same plane wreck as Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. What a sad day.. "The day the music died" -Don McLean wrote a whole song about it.
Yes, ur correct, that was not Richie singing, it was Lou Diamond Phillips, the actor that played Richie, in that movie. Now THAT is an incredible true story movie, worth reacting to!!! I BET U'D LUV IT!!!!! Great movie!!! 👍👍👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰👍👍👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
My favorite movie of all time. Chicano pride..thanks for this reaction
Not Ritchie Valens version. Thats lou diamond phillips, from the movie La Bamba, and Los Lobos is the band performing the song... a traditional mexican party song.
👍👍👍 well done comparing the movie, & the Original Richie Vallance
Do remember if I told you before, but I'll do it again.
Wishing you all the best from 🇦🇺🦘 And stay safe from COVID..
I love that so many young people around the world, are experiencing the music I grew up with. Most of which I love to sing along with, most of the time to within 95 - 100% of actual lyrics. But in the case of Richie Vallance, think I was only able to keep up maybe 10 or 15% accuracy, of the lyrics.. considering Richie's. Speed & my lack of Spanish..
This is Lou Diamond Phillips from the movie "La Bamba"
Do you people ever watch the video before commenting? Jay already said he knows this isn't Ritchie Valens. People are just so quick to tell someone they're wrong and they know best.
The first video was a clip from the movie La Bamba of Ritchie Valens
This was from a very good movie called "La bamba" about his life, u should definitely see it
This was rock for sure from that time, rock music back then gave the dance feels, it was long before my time but I used to party to this kinda music a lot during a part of my teens, I think the original sounds so much better due to that lengthened "bammmmba" :)
You should watch the film! Amazing film. Los Lobos did a great job of recreating Ritchie Valens' tracks for it.
Sorry, this isn't Richie Valens. This is from a movie starring Lou Diamond Phillips.
