Here in this video (using PAD-O-PAPER and MARKERS), I explore the idea of.... semi-representational self-portraits, and the possibility that they could show us things about our inner selves. What do you think, am I onto something, or going totally crazy?

Hey Peter, have you ever spent any time looking through microscopes? What you see is typically the only things on this earth that could resemble some of your drawings, pretty cool stuff
@@joannsoda2250 maybe he has a lot going on right now!
@@mariepark4250 like looking through microscopes.
I second this comment, peter plz
@@joannsoda2250 rude? He has almost 1 Millon subscribers. Comments get overwhelming at some point due to how many can come in. He'd have no life, or even time to draw if he responded to everyone.
It’s so funny you talk about regret of not playing piano, and I watch your drawings and feel longing to be an artist. I think there is loss no matter what path we choose- and I think why we feel grief even while we have joy. And it’s ultimately why we need comfort even in joy...which is why I watch your videos:) thank you!
This was nice.
Everything an artist does is in someway a self portrait. Art being a journey of self discovery.
yes
Are there any good books on this topic?
@@lisareid7043 I'm sure there are but you can teach yourself quite a bit just by starting on your own.
@@peter_draws Mister Peter, Dr. Sward Retep said hi.
@@Gotblade starting to draw has been the greatest self discovery and learning experience, you're spot on 👌👌❤️
✨The real Self Portrait is this whole video ✨
I love that you just kept sharpening the pencil.
One time I sharpened around 30 pencils in a row with a hand sharpener. I got a blister, but man it was nice. I was ready for my next pencil drawing.
Sward Retep needs to make more appearances in the future!
Peter, if this is a cry for help, just know we care about you. Either way, we appreciate you sharing such personal self reflection. These videos help me relax in the evenings, so I personally appreciate you very much
Feel like no one is recognizing that
If anyone drew and analysed there self portraits they would reveal things about themselves that are deep and unconscious. most people’s deep and unconscious thoughts are usually depressing, anxious thoughts
@dflat dude is having fun and making money and great artist and he knows it
This is honestly one of my favorite Peter Draws videos
i love Peter’s approach to art
...there is probably nothing in the universe that is more inspiring to me as to see a (young) man simply & plainly “draw” & bring with him an army of others to join him on his creative as well as intra-personal journey of self reflection & discovery... good on you!!!
14:44 what a beautiful piece of art
Dear Peter You are doing just what you should be. Inspiring people and giving joy to a lot of us. I hope you see how great you really are!
The image of Primitive Peter made me lol. fantastic video. I love it when you share a little of yourself with us through your art. From here I see a handsome, intelligent, caring and talented human being. Have a Happy Thanksgiving Peter!
Peter's jacket in this video is phenomenal. Period.
Love the new style “quasi realistic”. Fun to see a new side of you and meet “Sward Retep”.
When he said he was going to get someone to review/interpret his self portraits I expected the “guest” would just be himself.
A nice surprise to see he actually did get someone else in to review for him. Hope to see more of Sward in future videos :)
Yeah I was tempted to just do something goofy where I play dress-up and pretend to be someone else, but thankfully Sward was able to come by
I really enjoyed "Peter's Friend's" analysis of the drawings. Laughed so much in the space of only a few minutes.
Quick, get the sofa chair, it’s therapy time
How does that make you feel?
@@peter_draws i cant put my finger on it, i decided to try and draw myself with multiple eyes or mouths and see how i felt when i saw it, but it didnt go to plan when I remembered i do in fact have 3 eyes and 2 mouths. The realisation that my attempt to draw something horrific was just a true portrait, i cant say that is a wonderful feeling. Thank you for listening Peter, its good to talk to a fellow homosapien
I've been a fan for quite some time now. That last self portrait says it all. I love it....
Around 3:35 i was yelling at Peter to stop sharpening that damn pencil, until i realized what it was for lmao
i love this one, it kind of reminds me of that good old draw how you feel on post-it notes series
That was a perfect transition to the sponsor and I loved it. Great video and great art Peter!
Damn Peter, I really love you for everything you are doing. You have been the push, that got me into a heavy doodling phase(which is still lasting😂) You always gave me inspiration to get creative myself. I actually got accepted in an art-academy and I think, your content made me believe in myself and go through with it. You preach a lot of great values and it’s safe to say that you are my biggest idol. I Just want you to know, that you really moved something, even without knowing.
Love from Germany❤️❤️❤️
(Ps: if you’re interested in what I do you can check out the one video I have😂 maybe you can see your influence.
That was a project, that got me accepted for the art academy)
I used to have intrusive thoughts about art that kept me from doing it but your videos helped with that immensely. We and Sward Retep are here for you!
I love that it's peter draws backwards
Hi Peter, I hope you are doing well! I am assuming you are busy with school work but in case that is not the case I just want you to know I think the work you have done on RUclips has helped me so much. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a couple of years ago and have lived in constant pain and extensive treatment. I had not done any art since I was a child. You are the one who taught me to just draw lines and dots, and then draw another line. I can’t even explain what this has done for me mentally. I am certainly not at your level, however, I have made drawings and I have improved. It means so much to me to have this because I am often too weak to get out of bed but I can draw some lines and dots. Often, it’s the only thing I can do. So thank you Peter for sharing your art and trying to explain how you can just do it for the sake of doing it. I hope you are well, I miss new uploads but there are so many videos to watch and rewatch, I cannot complain. I hope everything is alright, that is the main thing. I wish you all the best, all the time! You are my favorite artist, youtuber, and teacher!
The second to last portrait is really cool. Probably my favourite of them all
I loved this. And happy to see the channel so close to 960k! Let's get Peter to 1M!
Talk about feeling behind, I feel ya there. I’m 30 and feel like I truly just started being a “serious artist” I was dissuaded from following art (the thing I was good at and liked) quit for 5 years after graduation, then came back to it. I’ve got a whole non art life I work around, kids, job, etc, it’s a constant battle against the clock… and like you I have other hobbies I want to give time to too. It’s hard not to be hard on ourselves about where we’re at. But as long as we enjoy the process I guess that’s all that matters.
the artwork in 8:21 to 9:19 is my favorite art you had made good job carry on the art!
I love your style. This inspires me to start drawing again.
You got me through the worst parts of lockdown and now I watch you as much as I can! Thank you Peter
Peter, I just finished a video of yours from last year. I noted you mentioning how you often put a filter on your videos to make your inks look more black. If I could make a recommendation, I highly recommend the Sailor Kiwaguro Ultra Black Pigmented ink. When I first got it, I thought to myself, "Goodness! My inks are finally as black as the ones that Peter Draws uses."
The Ultra Black in the name is no joke, and I find it amazingly keeps my pens wet, and is extremely black, but does not bleed (even in a normal notebook). If you already use it, though, please disregard!
I enjoy your videos and your Artworks! I also enjoy your humor and the ability to find enjoyment at your own expense! Thanks for just being yourself Peter. Be safe out there and enjoy your time here with us.
I really love your relaxed style of videos, and i love your boldness in whatever you do thankyou peter
peter you never cease to amaze with something surprising, hilarious, existential, terrifying, and beautiful.
I can't draw faces and just stick to abstract but your style makes me want to try do some portraits.
That guest star reviewer at the end was brilliant toox.
The first one and the last at 14:31 are super dope! That is a Tshirt or sticker design for sure. The naked, kneeling portrait is very 'Rugrats'-esque. Loved the idea for the video. I've never tried a self portrait from memory. Draw more people!! Introspective and fun!
Very inspiring, I love drawing faces, even if they don't look very realistic.
I’d love to see you do a collaborative piece like others have done where they start a canvas and send it to someone else and so on especially if you’re part is along the lines of your last self portrait. Love too see how others would add to something like that.
For the last week I have been writing a paper on the significance of self portraits and I’m very excited to watch this video!
this is my favorite video of yours, and some of your self-portraits are my favorite pieces you've shown us :)
Peter peter peter.... Lol, i swear.. If i had a nickel for everytime u cheered me up or made me laugh.. Ahhh love the video. And the idea of self portraits for analyzing the self. .. Lil bit of bordem, lil bit of genius, and a whole bunch of adorable. Ty
Might be my favorite video of yours yet, so good! 😆👍
Big fan of Sward Retep, I have all of his books
Say, what's Dan up to these days?
I heard Dan was getting a psychoanalysis from Nad, some guy who lives in Sward Reteps dishwasher
Word is Dan and Nad share a love of the racecar
Peter, you alright? You got into a pretty deep conversation around the main self portrait part (the one with the big smile) and you seemed kind of depressed. You don't have to feel alone, we are all behind you and love you.
I havent checked in your channel for a long time now. Glad you are still you and give me inspiration. I feel like I always drew the best after watching your videos and heared you talking.
Not only just drawings and self potraits, but also someone's general taste in art tells a lot about your inner psyche, I believe. The types of colors you prefer...and if you like it sketchy or clean and so on. You begin to notice a trend and it's always fun to try to evaluate what these could mean.
My dad is an expert pianist who composes music and can play any song by ear and he tried to get me to take piano lessons but I was stubborn and had more fun messing around and he stopped paying for my lessons so I feel the pain lol.
The last two drawings are brilliant..! 👍
That was a genius ad placement 😂 I was really into your monologue
I had a college experience with an art teacher who thought she could interpret my personality from my art.
I did smaller scaled works to save up space on my paper because art supplies are expensive.
She interpreted as a self esteem issue on my part. I told her " I am pretty sure this is a community College art course not a psyche 101 course."
She hated me but I realized the class wasn't worth my time when she showed us an drawing of a mouse she was doing that took her months and it was only half drawn 🙄.
And I thought I was laughing bEFORE your critic friend joined the show!!!
Stunning work as usual, Peter! Idk if I’ve seen you work with large markers, so I loved this bc I tend towards that (covers ground faster) and I’m also inspired to try self portraits with no reference now as I haven’t done so before and Lord knows I’ve looked at enough pictures of myself/ made wonky faces in the mirror p much every day of my life. Overall, this has been a very inspiring, delightful experience and I thank you for sharing your work and bits of your life.
My favorite artist in the world.
I'm all cozy under my Pendleton glacier park blanket and it's nice to see you have the same one. Cozy vibes.
Oh yeah I love that thing
I feel the exact same as you for not learning music younger. But we shouldn’t blame ourselves
That lump of flesh drawing is awesome
I am not convinced Sward Retep has ever really met Peter. He comes across as a hack, and only in it for the money.
Awesome video. It’s really cool seeing how your work is evolving. Keep up the great work!
Omg, I don't know how I missed this video.
Wonderful as always.♥️
would be fun to do a make+-up video, i think it can reveal a lot of thing to. I personnaly love corps paint
I'm receiving high levels of ADHD vibes from this video program, which I find delightful and relaxing.
(I know it's Peters personal business and that this is an entirely parasocial relationship, but based on my non-medical opinion as someone who has an ADHD, Peter sets off my adhd-sensors big time, especially listening to the pod)
My guy Peter is like a cross between Forty Quinn and Bob Ross. Love to see it
Peter draws is debatably the rarest of gems
But Peter, we love you as who you are right now!... and by the way, you ARE a superstar right here, right now AND you did it how you wanted to, in your own way. You're an amazing human, superhero, at least to me and you can't tell me otherwise.
Awesome video. I’d like to try out this exercise of self portraits, it seems so impactful! Thanks Peter and Sword person
Hello Peter I think it's wonderfully blessed what you do You're an amazing artist and keep up the great work
Lot of respect for the transparency
Peter, you rule! I'm glad your face is one I can see often.
I'm pretty good at drawing people. I think you are too. Especially when it comes to the abstracting. It's nice to see you draw something outside of the usual alien organism under a microscope, or the ominous ruins of an orbiting space manufacturing station.
13:00 I suddenly realize Peter is warmed up and creating a masterpiece
The idea that all of our art is in someway a self portrait is a rather......... unsettling thought. Doing a self portrait with out any refence of myself sounds kinda fun though. It will probably end up horrifically disfigured by all the things I hate about my face.
14:54 Wow 😍
I've always loved how you integrate and present the sponsored segments always so smart and different.
And not that it's any of my business but how are you still single?! Are there no single women in NC?! You seem like an absolute catch!
Swoard Reedtehp was insightful, thanks for having them on, Peter. You mentioned a piece of media, "What We Do in the Shadows" and i wondered which one you were referring to, the movie or the show?
Swword Retep has become quite the distinguished art critic.
My favorite is the Portrait #3 - Salad Fingers as self
Lookin good, Peter. That's a fantastic shirt!
The third one is the best one.period.
Love this Peter. Your portrait style reminds me of the artist Robert Crumb.
The "lump of flesh" reminded me of fried chicken and made me hungry.
Love these, so much more interesting than picture perfect
I guess you see your face more than people who aren't RUclipsrs with the editing of videos and thumbnails etc?
My favourite was the last one, the grimacing portait with asymmetrical eyes.
That’s probably also true!
Damn.. I love your drawings, definitely my favorite style 👀
The way you sharpened that pencil caused me all sorts of anxiety! The flappidy thing was open…and you used both holes…which generally are two different sizes…ahhh!
I love these, now I need to do this for myself
You know, I’ve never seen Sward Retep and Peter Draws in the same room... I think Sward is secretly playing this Peter character!
Peter, you are truly the 21st-century Bob Ross
He's like the white Bob Ross! Always so calm.
Never been this early before, hey Peter! I love your stuff. You can decide what I mean by stuff.
I hope to see more of Sward Retep, he seems like a distinguished gentleman
Although maybe a bit presumptuous about our friend Peter's Psyche - how does he know? He isn't Peter!
Some of these self portraits remind me of George Condo. Especially the third one Sward analyses!
This dude kills me😂😂 I thought he had a special guest fr
Keep up the good work Peter!
Nice drawings!! And… 18:26 🤣 😂 🤣
"I don't know what this one is" I've got a couple of sketches like that.
so when I was a kid my dad gave me his old College text books from the 80’s and I particularly liked the psychology book and read that thing cover to cover several times. I had an overactive mind as a kid and I particularly latched on to the chapters about schizophrenia, I was deeply worried I would suddenly have schizophrenia set in during my teenage years (maybe a 10 year old with an overactive imagination should not be given a college psychology textbook? idk but my dad was never the type to sugar coat anything or shied me from information) but I remember a section of the book had self portraits from a couple of artists who developed schizophrenia or some other form psychosis… It showed multiple self portraits they drew years apart and each one becoming more abstract and chaotic, it was really interesting almost as they descended into “madness” so to did their work. They also showed the Louis Wain cats- he started with nice little paintings of cute cats and as time went on and his schizophrenia became worse his cats paintings became super psychedelic and trippy and strange. I believe he was eventually even institutionalized but continued painting. this was around 100 years ago when as a society we didn’t understand how to properly help these people. Even 20+ years later that psychology book sticks with me. There is also an artist who created a bunch of self portraits under the influence of various drugs which I really like. His name is Bryan Lewis Saunders.
bryanlewissaunders.org/drugs/
I feel like you would like the movie “The Pistol” it goes over Pete Maravich, and his father had a similar way of building his son(Pete) up for basketball.
this Sward Retep guy is a pretty good art critic. my condolences go out to Peter after that psychoanalysis.
I am not ready, and I am not sure the world is ready, for Dr. Sward Retep.
It’s like these videos are exported from another reality where every human, physically speaking, is a Peter
