4 Ways to Add DEPTH to Your Drawings (with examples)

- Drawing is easy, but drawing things you are satisfied with isn't always. That's why it helps to helps to find something about the process you enjoy, so you don't get discouraged when you keep turning out results that aren't satisfactory to you.
Today we're going to look at four easy ways to add depth to your art. These are just four examples that I noticed I was using in my own art, and are by no means the only or best ways. I want to encourage you to just play around with art, and not expect yourself to get it right immediately, or ever, in fact. I definitely haven't figured it all out yet, and I don't know what I would do if I did.

I've come to the conclusion that all of Peter's drawings are made of spaghetti. Some uncooked, some cooked.
Peters voice feels like the hugs I never received as a child.
Evan Livermore do you need/want a hug?
Evan Livermore 🤗 🤗 🤗
*HUGS*
Evan Livermore Awww, that’s sad. Hugs.
Isnt that true?!?!?
His voice is just calming and feels secure.
Hugs hugs hugs ;)
I feel like having you as a professor would be both a blessing and a curse: a blessing because you’re a great teacher and a curse because your soothing voice would lull me to sleep every lecture
Extremely soothing voice.
Infinitely soothing

It's like Einstein once said after staring at an equation for 31 days straight, "It's all sticks and noodles and sometimes they overlap". Great guy that Einstein, I've heard he was pretty smart and it's clear Peter has studied him closely. I actually really like hearing your method and the reasons you do things because it's handy to think about art differently to yourself sometimes.

"I've heart he was pretty smart" Oh wow lol I like that sentence

This was actually very helpful. Each of the tips is a nice way to just start drawing without knowing where you're going but still ending up somewhere cool.
I love all the “let’s hop right into it” he does
It’s like the opposite of my pen review videos where it takes me 10 minutes to unbox the pen before i start drawing haha

Please, if you haven't already, make a video on texturing and emulating 3d shapes. Especially on your "cloud-smoke" things.
Yeah!
Yes please :)
He already has a video that goes over how he does smoke, it is old though and could use some updating.
!!
Can you do a tutorial on adding depth to one's life
😁
Same, noodles! =D
I love how he explains the art to his madness and makes it so reasonable :)
You’re looking healthy Peter
I know, right?! I haven't been watching him for several months and I literally thought he started uploading old videos. He looks 10 years younger, it's incredible! I remember him mentioning going to the gym, maybe that's why. Even his eyes, there's so much more life... I'm so happy to witness this wonder 🥰
Weird, I was thinking the opposite.
he looks HOT
Almost too healthy....
Okay Dublin bus man 🚍 👍
Another good idea for a video like this is to draw for us the basic shapes you put in most of your drawings.
Isn’t that every video?
I wish i could hear the sound of Peter drawings. I think it would be terrifying
I imagine there would be slurping noises
Filip I imagine a lot of steam puffing and mechanical noises, mixed with voices, and crisp wind sounds.
i always think of rumbling
Filip Ferreira Rodrigues I think there would be a mix of otherworldly terror but also beautiful soothing alien noises, as though in the midst of the confusion and chaos there is an unexpected source of beauty and unity
My favorite thing about Peter are his draw wings.
Same, I also love his draw wings
“Almost Parllels”
It’s tough to write on camera for some reason 😁
@@peter_draws They aren't quite "parallels", that's why the "a" is missing. Deep!
A happy accident :)
So possibly a sneaky intent, then 😏
Peter Draws its okay I think anything you write just becomes a language in its own... so you didn’t just misspell “parallel”, you just coined the word “Parlell”
Every time I see Peter's drawings I get both discouraged and motivated
He is extremely creative
100% same
When i draw while listening to your videos i always draw something im really proud of. Thank you.
How do you manage in such short time-spans, my drawings usually take an hour or more🤔
Peter, I found your missing "A" - here it is. Great video as always!

I love that as he learns new things in school Peter tries to share with us. I don't see him becoming a tutorial channel but sharing what you know and what you do with someone, especially knowing they like and might want to replicate your art, is just very nice of him
I absolutely love the way you explain art. It’s so simple but so accurate. I would concur that nearly every piece of art ever made contains sticks, noodles, almost parallels, and the deep dark.
3:16 -- If the Scooby Gang got assimilated by the Borg. This guy's stuff is really neat. Glad I discovered this channel.
He could be an awesome art professor
Great tutorial, but what i love the most about it are the little comments such as "You don't have to do it exactly like that" "No need to rush" and "No need to be perfect". Litterally the opposite of what most of my art teachers used to say. It had to be their way, with those colours, with those supplies, not with such harsh lines, yadda yadda. It made the only thing i enjoy nightmare and a chore. As a person with anxiety and authority issues this was soo soothing and relaxing to watch, love it so soo much
You've gotten very confident in your voice and personality in the past few years. Love you man keep up the videos and art.
I've been trying my hand at doing some abstract drawings like yours the last couple weeks and it's crazy just how easy you make it look. The one thing I've noticed is how much a tiny little detail can add to the overall depth and texture to the piece, and how even focusing on just form and contrast will come out with some interesting compositions. They're very minimal despite how minimalist they appear when they're finished. Anyway trying to draw in this style has been incredibly relaxing and fun, I just wanted to say how inspiring your work and videos have been to me. I find myself wanting to pick up my sketchbook and start doing one of these drawings instead of just vegging out online these days. It's almost meditative and has been really helpful for my mental health lately, so thanks for existing Peter!
Jurgen He has helped my mental health as well, so relaxing.
Yes, this is a much needed video.
Went to the MC Escher museum in the Hague (the Netherlands) yesterday. He plays around with perspectives. Using bird's-eye view for example, where you look down on something creates depth as well. The man is a genius and looking at his art can give you a lot of pointers. I'm not a drawer myself but an art enthousiast and learned a great deal about techniques by just looking and try to figure out how artists work. Loved this video Peter because the process of making art is equally exciting if not more than the art work itself. (But that is just my humble opinion)
I love his vocabulary and voice
Ah yes, 'vine looking things.' truly a scholar.
It's the sound of thick hot cocoa poured into a mug, with the bloop of marshmallows being dropped in from above, on a crisp, cold morning when the frost begins to dance upon the window panes at sunrise.
I do paint pouring and I’m trying to learn to take it much further by adding highlights and depth after the painting is finished. This is very helpful Peter. I’ve sold a lot of paintings finally. I’m retired now and finally I have time to do what I’ve always dreamt about doing. I really enjoy your videos and your calming voice relaxes me. It helps me to take in what you’re saying without all the unnecessary background noise. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, thank you. I can’t believe I just discovered your videos a few weeks ago, also I bought a fountain pen and I haven’t used one since I was in high school a long time ago. Thanks for that too, I’m really enjoying it.
“just let me call ‘em sticks” You can call ‘em whatever you want. Just love your work. Extremely talented!
More of these please. They are more helpful than you can ever know. The process of only making some lines with breaks for later connections would almost warrant a video on its own. Thank you Peter. Very much.
Depth and direction two things I love in your work.
I'm 40 and I only just started drawing in the last 2 months and all thanks to your videos. So yes, please make more with your tips and tricks. Or even just videos where you talk about what you're thinking while drawing. That's actually what inspired me to try drawing. You were explaining that you just make lines and see what happens and how it doesn't matter if they're good lines. Fix them if you need to or just add more that you do like. Some how those things had never occurred to me.
thedagit I’m 61. We are never too old to learn and young people can teach us so much, wouldn’t you agree?
@@SouthernArtist77 100% agree!
I've been feeling bad about trying to decipher what you do. You coming out and explaining it makes it all right. Thanks.
I will always love how Peter just, without any build up, will just showcase artistic masterpieces and then carefully go through and deconstruct his thought process in making them
God! You are so wonderful!!! I’m grateful that you are so generous with your talent. My doodles are evolving rapidly and I am enjoying them immensely.❤️
I love that he says it’s okay so many times .. makes me feel like maybe it is okay
crude or sloppy may it be, it was very well presented and understandable and i'm sure everyone would look forward to more of these sorts of videos :)
Hi Peter! I discovered your videos not so long ago (I recently bought a platinum and a muji fountain pen, and I found your channel).
I love your drawings, you seem to be a person who really enjoys what he does and who is quite focused when he draws. I like these little videos where you show tips and tricks like these, because it gives a glimpse over your universe and how you think when you draw, and it's quite unique.
i love the sound that fountain pens make on paper! especially at high speed!
I have always rooted for American Pie's Paul Finch, and I'm right to do so. He has mastered the arts, and is now helping others become better artists. 🤝💐
I really appreciate the way you broke it down into small bites and then showed working examples. This was super helpful, thank you.
Another good technique is a repeating shape or pattern that is a larger scale in the foreground and smaller the further into the background. The brain reads it as depth.
Peter is awesome man! He has been making videos forever now, and he is still churning out new content! And is still hitting big numbers! Good on you!
Just keep smiling and talking......I think you could convince me that the moon was made from chewing gum with that voice of yours!! I love the way that you can explain things without getting in a flap about it. You're so calm.....and it kind of rubs off on me, which is great from my anxiety's point of view. Thank you for another great video. I'm learning all the time!!❤❤❤
this and the advice to "shade a lot and experiment" has helped a lot with my doodles. Thank you
your drawings remind me of the drawings from the scary stories to tell in the dark book series
This is awesome. Thank you for simplifying the mind-blowingly insanely soothing detail that you put into your drawwwwwwings.
it would be cool to see more of your tutorials, especially about your crispy bumps, or something like that (smokes, cool mushrooms around spheres etc.)
This probably my first comment on any RUclips video ever. Peter, you made start drawing, and this little insight on what goes in your mind and the little techniques you use helps a lot. Please keep them coming.
Yesss thanks, Peter. I always watch you draw so effortlessly and when I try to do the same It's... I mean it doesn't suck too much but it does suck lol
Spider-Man - ahhhh...the old Spidey talks to Peter to throw us off the scent that they’re one and the same.

Don't know a thing about drawing, but I like to listen to Peter talk about art and fountain pens and such.
I like the way you explained that. It's helpful because sometimes when you draw you do those things like its second nature and suddenly I can't figure out how those bubbles got on top of that stick. I like this and, although I can't think of many other topics you could cover, I want to see more Instructor Peter.
you're my favourite person on this whole website. Thanks for existing
Wow, I learned something that is difficult to articulate. I am going to play this video over and over to ingrain it in my head. I'm 58 years old and learned something new. I'm not such an old dog after all. Thanks Peter.
Great video Peter, you might say it was crude but it was simplified and therefore easier to see and understand.
I would love to see you implement all of these techniques onto something spherical
A more accurate title would have been " 4 Ways to Add STICKS to Your Drawings."
I just love the sound that pen makes...
I know right!
Peter, what artists have inspired you? Your art style does remind me of some 70s comic books.
Thanks peter! I normally draw people and realism or even some more cartoony people. But you got me into abstract drawing! I started 6 years ago when i first watched you and i stopped doing it for a few years now i am watching you again and im doing some more abstract. Im so glad because ive had a really big art block with the art i normally do and this is so relaxing and nice. You dont have to worry about anatomy and things!
Okay at like 8:14 when Peter just suggests where the sticks are in space with the shadows, it was awesome to watch. The brain's first instinct is to believe the sticks are touching, but then the shadow just shoves it back into the background. The last one was really cool though how Peter places the shadow very close and all of a sudden that background stick takes on this wild angle towards the screen... Unreal.
Almost parallel lines... that’s some powerful stuff. I’m going to draw now! More of this please Peter, very very helpful! It almost changes how I look at your work. Will I forever see sticks and noodles now... 🧐
Gonna save this vid for later reference. It's actually what I needed to add sensible layering and shading to my drawings, as I didn't really grasp HOW to shade. Thank you
Woah, did you just say let you know if we want more video tutorials? HELL YES!!! Your artwork is incredible and I will watch anything you're willing to teach. Please make more.
I watched hundred of artists on youtube and i personly think your drawing is the best
Here goes the biggest THANK YOU I’ve ever given to anyone. THANK YOU!
Peter you really should be a teacher. You explain it so well. Please make more video lessons for us. I’ve loved this one xx
Best advice in the whole video: "None of this has to be perfect". The Bob Ross is strong with you.
Thank you, Peter
111 people pressed the wrong button being too focused on your friendly voice and way of speaking :D You are so talented, persisten and encouraging Pete, thank you and keep it up, always! :D Even with so many, this is one of my favourite art channels and i dont watch many but surely i like to watch you draw and "ramble" as its called like nobody else, youre such a cool and laidback person that id like to draw beside you for sure :D
Very useful. Apart from portraits I like to draw old buildings and when I watched your video it made me think about how I wanted a building landscape to stand out. thanks for showing your video!!!
Hey Peter! I have recently been assigned as a elementary substitute teacher for Art class and it's a longer term position so I need lessons! I have loved your channel for years and I plan to include you as an example for a modern day artist! Hope you don't mind
It was helpful. Makes absolute sense. Tanx heaps for taking the time to do this 🙏🏽
Wow really helped a beginner like me! Thank you so so much
I will forever call my lines "sticks" and "noodles"
thanks
I never really liked shading or using perspective/depth in my art growing up and whew boy I am paying for it now. Thank you for the video, it's really helpful!
You did a great job. I get being unsatisfied with your own work. My wife takes my drawings out of the trash and frames them. After a few years I usually start to like them, it’s why I became a digital artist. Ctl-Z lets me back out mistakes and re-do until it matches what imaee in my mind.
among other things, I am always amazed that he can so easily draw lines that are straight, or curved, parallel or alone, without using a straight edge or French curve.
*Omg* Peter, I've been following you since like your first videos when your where doodling on your wall and you were doing those "How to doodle" series, it's been a while since I've last check on your channel *AND WHAT DO I SEE??* you now have over *800k sub* and doing an impressive amount of views! I am soo glad you finally get the recognition you deserve. I've began doodling with your videos Peter and honestly seing how much your doodles have turned *FREACKING HOWESOME* it motivates the sh** out me to get my pen out :) !
As an artist I find this stuff super interesting to see u explain what ur doing, plz give us more stuff like this
Love these quick and dirty techniques vids. Very general and applicable to most drawing styles. Great work.
I do especially like the Almost Parllels technique. The world just got a little better with this technique pointed out.
You're a great teacher, especially for a beginner like me. It's good to study comic books/graphic novels for this kind of thing. Thanks!
He's like teaching depth and texture at the same time. So cool!
You're just the best. So talented and so down to earth. I love watching you create your worlds and get a bit tongue tied trying to explain it all.
This is helpful, I got my first dip pen and have been trying my hand at your style of drawing lately. Thanks for the tips (:

You just gave me the tools to breathe life into my drawings. Thank you so much.
I would love to see you do more tutorials on drawing. You have a nice teaching style. It's calm and reassuring.
Thank you Peter. I always go back to these videos you make. I still use the art block one you did. It's helped me so much.
