    Wow Rob this is a magnificent and spectacular goblet, you are making me so nervous. Going on so thin and I am begging you while you work not to make it so thin. It is just awesome and stunningly beautiful. Wow! And it did not break. I am not a turner but love every minute of what all of you are doing.

      Hi James, I shared a few suggestions in some of the comments but essentially finish cutting each area while keeping as much wood in the areas that you haven't worked on yet. Then support the goblet once turned closer to the rim than the center line, and stay away from scraping cuts once thin. I hope that helps, Keep well, Rob.

    Very nice made Rob. Simply beautiful. At what speed do you turn this?
    Frank.

    • @RobBrandtWoodturning
      @RobBrandtWoodturning  4 года назад +2

      Thank you, I was turning at roughly 1000 - 1200 rpm once it was round then I dropped down to around 900 rpm at the end. I think you should slowly accelerate and decelerate the piece, my lathe has that built in but i used the variable speed control to accentuate this, once the stem was thin. The stem transfers the rotational force to the goblet so will break when it is not strong enough to overcome the friction in the live center bearings or there is a high instantaneous force (startup or a catch). There is a risk if the bearings are sticky or the goblet lags the base that one would simply twist apart from the other. For this reason I would also avoid scraping and power sanding :) I hope this helps and doesn't seem like I am trying to teach you how to suck eggs. I would love you see your version. Keep well, Rob

      I think it was pretty much plastic once I had finished with the CA glue :) I am glad it stayed on, gives a more organic feel. The wood is also still drying out so don't know how it will end up when it is done moving. Thanks for connecting Jim, Keep well, Rob.

    Use a hook or ring tool to do the inside of the goblet. The cutting edge is facing the correct way to do that cut. The old adage, "Correct Tool For The Job". woodturningtoolstore.com/product/hook-tool-by-michael-hosaluk/

      @@RobBrandtWoodturning They require a lot more sharpening and a little different technique, but they work great and can leave s glass smooth finish. You can also look at a Oneway Termite ring tool.
