'Güde HQ 400B' Lathe Restoration & Modification
Lathe Data:
Manufacturer: Guede
Model: HB 400 B
Year: 2004
Weight: 210kg
General Information:
Iam a hobby machinist, and this lathe isn't a high precision tool. But it helps me a lot for the things i do.
I bought this lathe 2 years ago from a Porsche engineer, who didnt work a lot with it, but treated it well. To me its the perfect lathe because of its size and the drill head.
FAQ to the restoration:
Q: Why didnt you calibrate the carriage and the tailstock?
A: I did.
Q: Why didnt you replace the bearings and belts?
A: The belts were replaced by myself around 1 year ago and still in a good condition. The Bearings may look old, but since the lathe wasnt used pretty often in his service life, the bearings clearences were still pretty well. So I decided 'just' to clean them.
Q: Why didnt you (fully) disassemble the tower?
A: To be honest, I did. But i did offcam, because there was trouble with the fit of the spindles main bearing (was losen). So I fully disassembled it and reassembled it with correct torques.
Q: Wasn't the paint dry or why could I see so many blue spots after painting?
A: The paint needs around 3 weeks to dry completely. I reassembled after around 1 week, so here and there was some paint cracked off because of reassembly. But: I gave it a whole touch up job after it was fully reassembled.
Q: Why is the lathe chuck turning when the drill head is working? It didnt do that before!
A: Youre right! Now it does, and thats the way its supposed to be.
Q: Why did you do so much work off cam?
A: You really dont want to know how much work this was, so...sometimes I just needed to turn the camera off ;-)

Some people asked for her name - sad to say she doesn't have one. So...guess it`s up to you, comment your suggestion below!
PS: most liked name within a few weeks will be printed on a name plate on the lathe 🙂
@@misterpatina How about Renate? It means "reborn" and your lathe has basically been reborn! 😁
Haha, great idea. And a good ol' German name!
Gertrude = Stronk
Lathey mac latheface
Elizabeth. Always wanted the "big" one.
Pretty cool!! Love the new color too and the DRO upgrade was the cherry on top. Such a big improvement.
Thank you so much!
My thoughts exactly! Overhauling the whole machine made the bearings more quiet and longer lasting, that old grease just goes too thick, and does nothing good anymore. Great work man!
@@Njazmo thanks!
Still watin datsun part 6 T_T
Do not be distracted! Datsun is waiting for you! :D
Things I wanted to do for a long time: restore my lathe
Things I don't wanna do any longer: restore my lathe
Great job buddy and so much work❤
Thanks a lot my bearded friend ❤️
Piece of cake, after that coffee machine :D
@@n0vska that's the kind of motivation I need. Thanks man
Dr. B, you need to do something for yourself. You do marvelous things for others, take care of you. It will be just as much fun to watch!❤
Danke Arthur! Die komplette Arbeit waren ca. 3 Wochen in Vollzeit 👍
Oh und: viele Kaffeepausen 😅
I don't know why, but seeing craftsmen maintain the tools used to help us engage in that which we love brings a special joy to my heart. thanks for sharing. This is a lovely project
No talking & no music, good Video mate 👍
Huge project! Well done with one minor mistake: 180°C powder coating can be done in the kitchen oven. The wife loves this so she feels included 😅
Very impressive. And the good old 710 joke made my day.
Haha, thanks a lot!
Trust me, I know him well... It wasnt a joke
🤣🤣🤣
I watch restoration videos a LOT these days (my wife calls them "ASMR relaxation videos for nerds", and she's not wrong :) ) But I think this is the first time I've seen one restoring/repairing a *well-cared-for*, and clearly well-loved, tool! Such a great reminder, that anything you use a lot, even if you maintain it well, will need an overhaul every now and then. Thanks for the insight!
Thanks for your long term support! I thought about doing this 'resoration' for a long time - and it was totally worth it. Everytime i enter the shop, I have a smile on my face when i see the lathe. And - working with it is so much fun now! Greets to the wife - a nerd. :-D
what a fantastic little lathe - you did her proud
That was absolutely fascinating from start to finish. Thank you very much for doing this. I've been watching your channel (and others) for years and never really understood how you did some of the 'tricky' lathe things you do. Now I understand... well, a little!
Thank you so much! Im glad you now understand...the basics...:-D
I difficult to believe this lathe has only, maybe, 5 parts. If I didn't see it myself I wouldn't believe it. Excellent restoration!
Impressive work, Lots of patience to work the whole Lathe,
the most challenging restorations ive have ever seen . thank you
Always a pleasure to watch a craftsman
Huge improvement! I always love seeing people tailor machines to their own needs and you did a great job as always, Patina!
The color is really nice!
I really want to put a DRO on my lathe now :)
Awesome work as always
Thank you so much Martin! Installing the DRO wasnt actually complicated, and the improvement is superb!
Great job! To further reduce noise, consider adding some sound-dampening material inside the belt housings, such as the self-adhesive mats found in high-end car audio systems.
Thank you so much, that’s a great idea! I’m gonna do that 🙂
6:12 A spring is a very useful technical component, but mostly they are launching across the workshop or they´re hitting in your face 😂
…most of the I’m searching them 😅
Absolutely wicked restoration the colour choice is number 1 along with the Vevor electronics.
Thanks! I’m glad you like it!
It is spooky season and the disassembly was one of the scariest things I've seen this year!
Pretty cool !
Herzliche Grüße aus der Zwergstatt.
Jörg.
Haha, den kannte ich noch nicht! Grüße aus Frankfurt!
You "boldly go where no man has gone before."
Haha, the way wasnt easy, but it was worth it!
Great refurbishing, looks new.
Very, very impressive. Taking apart, cleaning, AND improving this complex piece of machinery I find incredible. And of course putting it back together again, without any pieces left over 😆😆😆. Great job sir!
As for the name: Magdalena is my suggestion. After Bach's second wife. Maybe Maggie for short. Then it could also refer to Maggie Smith. Two incredible women who made difficult things seem easy.
Harry, pretty creative with your suggested names :-)
Oh and...just because you didnt see leftover screws, doesnt mean there werent some: to be honest, there was one screw and one washer left, i couldnt identify anymore. While editing the video after the work was done, i saw these 2 guys while checking the video footage and they found their place back :-D
Woo-wee!! What an undertaking!! Well done!! 💫
Great work! It is always satisfying to see restorations of the tools that make all other tools!
This was really a lot of fun to watch. You do humor really well, Mr. P. Well filmed, edited, and produced. I have a smile on my face while I'm typing this.
Thank you so much Vickie
Bravoooo maestro fantastično uradjen posao.Veliki pozdrav od vjernog pratioca iz Bosne.👋👋🔧🔧🔨🔨🔩🔩🔩🔩👍👍
Yet another brilliant restoration!
Nice to see you putting fresh 710 on all the moving parts.
Haha!
I am inclined to use 711.
I didn't like that color at first but when it's all back together I love it. I may have to rebuild mine now that I see how good it looks and how quiet it is. 😊
Maestro P! What a big step further and better and more exciting!
Hats off, you are the man of skill and joy to watch!
Nazdorovie, brat!
Just want you to know Mr P your videos really help me with my depression.
It’s nice to know I’m not alone in making things nice again and your videos bond with me when I’m feeling down
It gives me relaxation and helps me take my mind of everyday crap that lands my way so from one detail person to another I say
Thank you 🫡
Top notch acting skills, drama was really pouring from the other side of the screen ! Very nice work, thank you !
Excellent! I thoroughly enjoyed this video!
23:01 These are capacitors. Two of them, which usually means that the motor is actually three-phase. Capacitors are needed to create a phase shift on two windings out of three to enable operation in a single-phase network. In this mode, a three-phase motor will not produce all of its rated power, but will operate more or less normally. It is also possible that the motor is still single-phase but with an additional starting winding, but in this case there is usually one capacitor instead of two. Edit 23:25 Oh yes, it is still a single-phase motor, but with a starting switch, two capacitors for starting, after gaining speed the switch is triggered and leaves one capacitor.
Thank you so much Jim!
Beautiful job, beautiful lathe, excellent color choice! I especially like the new modifications. Fantastic job sir, once again 👍🏼
Thank you so much Phil!
You know he missed a spot, right?
@@ronm3245doesn't matter, it's still beautiful. Missing a spot only matters when it comes to wiping your ass.
Respekt.
Great job mate. I might have put the DRO on the other side of the carriage... but what a difference!
Not possible, because on the other side is the clamping screw :/
Thanks Mister Patina for the great video, you are always different
You’re welcome 👍
Another masterpiece!
Absolutely brilliant mate enjoyed every bit of that. Take care and stay safe. Tom.
Badass Brother! That’s outstanding in color, restoration to better operation and upgrades.
Very inspiring. I need to find something to redo.
Thank you so much my friend! Iam glad you like it!
Three of my favourite restorers in the same comment section?! 😮
What about seeing these three restorers in one video?
@@misterpatina wait what?! 🙀
@@misterpatina are you guys going to help MyMechanics with the Nissan/Datsun?
@curtis2308 😉
Let’s just say…stay tuned for the next videos :)
As ever your attention to detail is breathtaking - hoping to see much action on the refurbed lathe
Thank you so much! You will 👍
I did exact same mods to my grizzly lathe. Love it. Nice job.
Excellent work, as usual! This must have taken a huge amount of time to do the work, filming and editing. Thank you.
Thank you so much, it definitely was 🥲
Gute Arbeit!
Dankeschön 🙂
That big cylinder on the side of the motor is probably a “Soft start” capacitor to provide a less violent startup than older motors.
Thanks Uncle Ned! A quick and effective explanation :-)
Beautiful renovation of the lathe, nice look and the final modernization came out great. Best regards from Mosina near Poznań.
Thank you so much Robert! Greets from Frankfurt!
Thanks for the disassembly video, well done.
Nice job. Time spent maintaining and improving your tools/equipment is rarely wasted. Item at 23:00 on motor is a start capacitor
Thanks!
Hi Paul,
there are two capacitors. Is one a start capacitor (23:00) and the other a suppression capacitor (23:05)?
Greetings Tino
@@einufo Possibly, my knowledge of motors is a bit rough at best, cheers 🙂
@@paulmartin7737 It's similar for me - when I had lectures on electric motors decades ago, I didn't understand much.
Greetings, Tino
Simply... SUPERB !
Your surname is perfection! Lovely colour! Greetings from Necochea, Argentina
Haha, thank you so much! Greetings from Frankfurt!
Amazing restoration
Genio.! - - Gracias.!
That was really full of schmodder... nice Job!
Haha, thanks!
Danke 🙂
Hello mister Patina beautiful restoration beautifully restored well done
Thanks Vince!
Awesome job Mr. P!!
Thanks Jason!
Nice job. Love the new colour compared to that blue. The mods look like they will be very handy. I feel like I should be doing tie same thing to mine 👍
Go for it mate, I can totally recommend!
Amazing job my friend congratulations 👏👏
Thank you so much!
Well done.
Very nice work.
But once you get there, it would be a good idea to replace the plastic gears with metal, brass or iron ones.
The result is perfect.
Thanks!
Perfect machine job and colour 😅
Absolutely perfect
Thanks!
Herr P, this is by far my most favorite of all the videos. The disassembly, problem solving along the way, and creativity. Those metal shavings really get everywhere - is there a way to cut back on that? A magnet would not work for all materials, so that will not work. Great improvement all around. Name for rebuild? 'kein Lego mehr'.😎Good stuff. BTW, I had to look up shmodderbrocken - yuck.🤮
Thank you so much Sharon! Iam really glad you enjoyed! I thought about installing some sort of suction system, so the chips will go to the vacuum cleaner. But: I always try to collect the different materials and I dont want to empty the cleaner everytime i change the material. The magnets arent basically for collecting the chips, theyre just for quick (de-)mounting on the carriage when cleaning the lathe. As long as they dont get into the DRO, im good with it ;-)
"kein Lego mehr"...:-D
Better than new.nice colour
Vielen Dank!
That cylindrical part is a capacitor. It stores electrity and then gives brief additional power at startup when the power requirement is double. If you accidentally touch it, you'll get a shock you won't soon forget.
Very nice! You're gonna be abble make plenty of "new ones" on that thing 🎉
I will do soon, when I look at the upcoming project 🤣
You are ready to go!!!
Super Video und tolles Ergebnis.
The two cylinders on the motor are capacitors. This is a single phase machine, but a three phase motor (deutsch: Drehstrom). The first capacitor generates a phase shift of nearly 120 degrees to achieve this. The second capacitor reduces the startup current.
In German it is called „Steinmetzschaltung“.
Respekt. Super Arbeit wieder 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Danke Murat!
Great Patina......you are best!!!!
Thx!
Great job! It’s as good as new. Maybe better.😊
Thanks!
Lovely job!
Danke Tony :-D
Applaus Applaus 👏
what a cool lathe
That tube under the cover on the side of the motor was likely a capacitor. Brushed motors draw a very high amp load when starting up. The capacitor compensates for this so you don’t trip a breaker every time the motor starts to move
So that's what disassembling a thoroughly lubricated machine instead of a bucket of rust looks like... 🙂
😅
You should modify those shields for the DRO. You could incorporate way protectors
That, my friend, is a lot of metal shards that get into everything. It's hard to clean, I imagine.
Don't know about devil's nutella, but the acetone tea looks delicious!
😅😅
Great job ... love the colour 😊
I would have painted it hot pink and safety orange.
/s
That's really great! 😊
Thanks!
Hammerschlag.... Beste Farbe.
Ich steh auf die Blaue😉
super sweet!
sudah lama saya menunggu ini 😂
An excellent machine 🍻
Thanks!

Tolle Arbeit/ nice job
Danke Ralf!
Great video!
Thanks!
Grande lavoro di estrema precisione. Il nome? Valuta "Tornado". Ciao!
Bom dia, sensacional trabalho. Gostei demais parabéns. Grande abraço.
I once changed the spark plugs in my car!!
Hop it runs well!
Very cool!
Was ist deine Meinung dazu?
@@misterpatina my thoughts are someone taught you correctly.
