I've been watching rock picker vids and saw a couple where the ground looked like the surface of Mars. It was sandy, reddish, rocky and about the most unpromising soil I'd ever seen. Comments said it was in Egypt, obviously a distance from the Nile. Not a hint of green and a big irrigation rig in the background. It didn't look like it could be irrigated economically.
If they create some good soil and have a top dressing that retains moisture and keeps the soil cooler from the sun's rays, then irrigation might be fine
