This saddest thing was in my theater after Episode 3's credits were rolling everyone stood up and started clapping!!!!!!!!! I was shocked about the backlash too!
If George Lucas never made these movies, the idea of the old republic and a Jedi Temple filled with trained Jedi would never exist, I don't think we would get games like Knights of the Old Republic, or The Old Republic or alot of these great books.
I couldn't agree more! The world building, in the movies themselves, I'm not even talking about Clone Wars, books and comics, is not only masterful but masterfully incorporated with very little awkward exposition.
Yep the setting really sucked until they added Dexter Jettster's 50s cafe, why is there no action figure of this guy? Or am I just too dumb to find one.
I liked Dexter cafe. And I liked Obi wan in deleted scens after realizing that Jedi droids for analysis are compromised ask his friend who was prospector on Subterell on outer-rim and know lot about civilizations to see if he knows anything about poison dart
shadow librarian ... wait, wut ? I love the prequels, and I would agree that the OT didn’t do nearly as much worldbuilding as the prequels, but they did it a lot too. From Tarkin and his line on the senate being disbanded, to Lando talking about how hard business is under the empire, to the mere existence of Jabba and his palace, or the disparity of the rebel fleet compared to the imperial fleet in epVI. And that’s only a few of the instances in the films. Point is : worldbuilding is a prominent part of all six Star Wars, even though clearly the prequels brought it to its height.
When George Lucas said "I may have gone too far in a few places", he wasn't talking about Episode I being bad, like many try to spin it (Plinkett for example). He was talking about the movie's climax being too complicated as it had so many events happening at the same time: Padme reclaiming the throne room, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fighting Darth Maul, the Gungans battling the Trade Federation army, and the Naboo starfighters trying to take out the Droid Control Ship. The scenes where Lucas and his producers arguing are because of this issue, not because they think The Phantom Menace will turn out to be awful.
That kinda means the movie has a pacing problem, and why he can’t remove major scenes in editing. Something Lucas realized which yes bad pacing does the effect the quality of a film. Does it mean Lucas thought it was awful, most likely not.
The fact of the matter is simple: after bashing George Lucas for more than a decade... it's impossible for these people to accept that others have managed to do a way, way, way worse job than he did. I still have hope that someday they'll come around it. But considering how the people at Lucasfilm blame the critical and commercial failures of the new films on ANYTHING but themselves and the quality of their writing, we still have a long way to go...
@Cheryl I watched Phantom Menace again lately and there are so many blatant hints! (Not to mention the subtle facial/lip movements) He says he was banished after he made a mistake and *people died as a result!* THE GUNGAS RUN SCREAMING WHEN THEY SEE HIM. Lol even as a kid my friends and I walked out of the theater saying, "Something's not right about Jar Jar. Why is he in all black? Only bad people wear black in Star Wars."
Wow. Finally someone who gets midichlorians. I remember in 2013 when Jar Jar Abrams had to announce that there wouldn’t be any mention of midichlorians in Episodes 7-9, because of all the prequel hate. They wanted to sell tickets.
In Abrams's defense, he was working for Disney so he didn't actually control everything, apparently he was done in by them too with this new trilogy as it seems Disney will do anything to avoid controversy and sell more tickets/merch even if it costs them a good story in the end.
it seemed to me like the Jedi had already fallen, they were pawns of the chancellor and could not even sense force ability anymore, so they resort to blood tests to find force sensitive children.
@Grapthar's Hebrew Hammer Actually the part about Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter was correct. However, lineage doesn't mean you can use the force without training. Just look at Luke for example.
He was. He brought balance, the Jedi had a misconception that balance meant “no more dark side”, but there were way too many light side users and a handful of dark side users. Anakin brought balance through this.
I love how Doug can sound so reasonable and understanding one second, then completely flip around and sound like a condescending holier-than-thou the next. "If you enjoy these movies, that's fine! Everyone is entitled to their opinion :)" seconds later "I wish I was so dumb and naive to blindly enjoy this shitty movie dur hur"
all the while he literally brags about being so stupid that he can't grasp basic political concepts. Ffs, how does a grown man not know what a blockade is? Or a treaty?
"Ruined my childhood" is stupid for a different reason- if the OT defined your childhood that much, why would a movie thag came out AFTER your childhood ended "ruin it"?? I despised theLast Jedi, and since it shat on OT characters, the claim that it "ruined my childhood" would mzke more sense than prequel haters' claims, but I never said that, not even jokingly! I grew up with OT, even though I was born way too late to see any of them in theatres, I watched them hundreds of times on my VCR, and no matter how muchI dislike whatever hacks like Johnson do to Star Wars, they are NOT fucking time travellers!! They cannot ruin MY cherished experiences and memories that stretch as far back as late 80s and early 90s, as they have no power over my past or past Star Wars movies!
Konrad Wallenrod - Danko Sekulic The reason why some people say that, and although in the prequels’ case I don’t think they had a good case as for why it was the case I think that their experience can’t be denied, is because although no one can time travel, one’s memory can still be affected nonetheless. For many people, continuing a saga and taking their characters and ruining them, or prefacing a saga they know with a new part where the ancient characters are explained, can have the result of making them unable to see the first saga without thinking about how it supposedly goes for them afterward, or how they are supposed to have come from, which significantly reduce their enjoyment of future viewing, hence making them unable to treasure this piece of childhood they had with them as much as before. I’m not saying it’s logical, though the human brain is notorious for not being logical in many aspects, or that many prequels haters had good reasons to dislike the prequels and hence have their subsequent viewing of the OT harmed, I’m just saying that it happens. And it happens because it’s the goal of prequels and sequels. They are supposed to trick your brain into thinking that the characters on screen are the same characters, just in the past or the future of whatever thing the are prequels/sequels to, and they are supposed to make you either see the characters in light of the events depicted in the prequels, or see their actions in the light of what will come out of them past the original story. Hence if you right bad prequels or sequels (or that people don’t like your prequel/sequel), it’s only normal that some viewers will now see the characters or their actions in such light, which will decrease their enjoyment.
Just remember when considering Doug's opinion, that he thought the Last Jedi was bold, pushing the envelope and taking star wars in a new direction. He completely shilled for Rian Johnson, even after Rise of Skywalker.
As a fan of Doug, I'm actually ashamed of him. Back in the day, he had balls. I won't unsubscribe but he lost a chunk of my respect when he praised The Force Awakens and subsequent Star Wars videos have proven to me that he knows very little about the franchise. In that sense, he's no different from Stuckman or Stoklassa and it's sad because in other videos, he's not only entertaining and charismatic but can bring up some interesting and valid points. Unfortunately, whenever he talks about Star Wars, outside of one video where he showed some backbone and defended the Prequels (albeit not without shielding himself from other Prequel haters by saying that he still thought they were bad movies), he embarrasses himself.
There was nothing wrong with Jake casting. Padme being a teenage Queen was also brilliant. She was a teenager taking care of her planet and taking charge of the operation to retrieve it back, including give orders to a Jedi and his Padawan. So, she had too much responsability on her shoulders, which can't be said of many teenagers. And it was clear she also had the knowledge to be the Queen.
Fascinating how Doug pretends he knew TPM was going to be bad and why even before it came out, but 16 YEARS LATER, he is UNABLE to think up of a single ORIGINAL bit of criticism! Racial stereotypes, boring plot, too much politics (yeah, wars and politics are two separate worlds, aren't they 😂), bad acting, Jake Lloyd.....blah blah blah
That's one argument that really pisses me off. People say the plot is too hard to understand in these movies. (The Prequels) Literally watch the opening crawl and you'll be given all the expositional details you need to at least somewhat understand and interpret what exactly is going on. Literally, people need to actually watch these movies before jumping on the band wagon.
Children can follow this movies, but grown adults can't? You don't need to be versed in trade negotiations and politics to see the bad guy using this guys and sparking a war in his favor to gain political power. And that he is corrupting the main kid. Read the text that explains who the actors are and pay attention as much as a 12 year old can.
I just REALLY hate it whenever people say TPM had no main character. THERE WAS A MAIN CHARACTER! HIS NAME IS QUI-GON JINN! We follow that bearded can of awesome as he goes to the Trade Federation ship. We follow him to Naboo as he picks up Jar Jar and the Queen. We follow him to Tatooine as he gambles to get Anakin and fights the Sith Lord Darth Maul. We follow him to Coruscant as he argues his case for training Anakin and we follow him back to Naboo as he helps the Queen retake her homeworld and gets a rematch with Darth Maul. We even get a tragic score when Maul shanks him, showing how the light of the story just went out when he died. I loved TPM because of Qui-Gon, and how unconventional it was that the main character of the whole film was a wise and aged Jedi Master who is as good a fighter as he is a negotiator, instead of some young pilot or some lantern-jawed superhero who only knows how to hit things. And people shit on this film for not having a main character. Bloody hell, they're morons.
18:34 Now it makes sense, Palpy intended Amidala to die. So he could shamelessly ride her carcass remains to the Chancellor's office (Via sympathy votes) Since that did not happened. He had to readjust his plans to a no confident vote. He truly was the "Phantom Menace"..How I missed this after 20 years...Damn.
She was also meant to die at the beginning of AoTC so he could rile the senate up against the seperatists. It all worked out more in his favour with her living.
@@anomalyinc3239 you know how out of touch prequel haters are when they actually say "Darth Maul is the phantom menace" lol I knew kids who saw the the phantom menace whenever it came out in 99 (I was 19) who knew the phantom was Palpatine/Sidious It's like their brains just shut off. . phantom means unseen, like a shadow and Lucas brilliantly shows Sidious as that a ghostly phantom even only showing Sidious in a hologram throughout the prequels until Revenge of the sith
I mean I’m a Star Wars fan (I mean a really devoted fan) and I love the Prequels (since I grew up on them). Now yes they are flawed, but they are masterpieces compared to the rehash shit Disney has been putting out for the passed 4 years.
I Don't Like The Comparison Of The Prequels Are Good Coz The Disney Ones Are Bad The Prequels Always Stood On There Own They Were Just Victims Of Salty Internet OT Fanboys They Weren't Flawless & never Were But they Are For The Most Part Great If You really Think About The Story World Building & Characters
@@anomalyinc3239 And they add to the implications of Luke in the OT. He's the reason why Vader is fixated on him because he's the son of Anakin Skywalker and not more man than machine. He is the one who can overthrow the Emporer from his perspective. THIS IS WHY THE MEDICHLORIANS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF THE SAGA. My friend blew my fucking mind when he said this: "Medichlorians: a plot device introduced by George Lucas to place the upmost importance on Anakin Skywalker's necessity to be trained as a Jedi and be understood as the reason why Darth Vader can't over-throw the Emperor by himself. As they reside within the cells of living beings who are composed of various amounts of biological tissue, Yoda, for example, is smaller than the average human jedi but has one of the highest Medichlorians counts of any jedi on record. If Yoda had the equivalent injuries Anakin had after his battle on Mustafar he would have lost the same percentage of his Medichlorian count that Anakin did. Being the son of Anakin Skywalker, Luke Skywalker has inherited the biological amount of Force potential that his father had. This reinforces the entirety of Luke's importance in the original trilogy because the Rebellion now has someone fighting for them as powerful in the force as Anakin had been during the Clone Wars. Thus, it gives Obi-Wan and Yoda a reason to want Luke to be trained as a Jedi, Palpatine has a reason to fear Luke, and a reason for Vader to convert Luke to over-throw the Emperor."
@@thesentinel5523 oooooor... The force is just strong with Anakin. They didnt need midichlorians for the Andy Potter series. Harry Potter was just chosen. Keeping the mystery and mistique of the force is better. By unnecessairily adding midichorians into the story, you bring science to the force. Science can be measured and tested. Therefore, instead of building a space moon laser thingy, its better to gather midichorians into a petri-dish and inject them like steroids. Vader is quoted as saying "The power to destroy planets is insignificant next to the power of the force." Vader fucking knew this and you bet your ass the Emperor and the wisest of The Jedi Council knew it as well. However, if one is just chosen by prophesy, then there is no way to artificially manipulate the force. Powers are earned by training and leveling up if you will. The idea of midichorians was bad.
I am an original trilogy child. Born in 1975. But i love the prequels. In fact, my favourite Star Wars film is Revenge of the Sith. I do prefer the style of the originals though.
Revenge is my favorite and Return was my second but now Rise is. So ROJ got bumped down to 3rd place. I love all things Star Wars because it's Star Wars and it's meant to be entertaining and not hacked apart by internet folk. Know what we did after a Star Wars movie came out back in the day? Went outside and played Star Wars! Shoot I built a homemade Ewok village in a tree in my backyard and my brother actually dug a Lars homestead by tunneling in our dirt pit out back with a toy shovel! And I tell ya, I would just as soon create Starkiller base in my freezer now, honest to God. Sincerely, Someone who has seen ALL the movies in the theater upon release and loves ALL of them. #stopthehate
"Midicholrians means a blood transfusion means now I can use the force that's so stupid" It makes more sense than the original idea. "Anyone can use the force as long as they believe in it" if that's the case why didn't Leia, Han, chewbacca, etc all use it? They all fought with Luke, they all saw it was true and possible, they all knew about and saw Vader. I love Star Wars, but the fan base's hate for the prequels is worse than the entirety of the FNAF fanbase
Leia could use the force, she simply never got trained in it, until later on the story, even Force unleashed had Leia using the force a lightsaber so she could use it, just not on Luke´s level. Also I´ll state this right now, the midchlorians should´ve been considered a scientifical PoV of the force that force users like Darth Plagueis and Tenebrous believe in due to their life experiences with the force, while other force users could´ve easily had different PoV on the force, this should´ve been the way to go in regards to the midichlorians, some believe in them and some dont, but it´s not a absolute in SW just another way to see the force.
Heck, the Midicholrians aren't the ones that enable the force. They are things that determine how much are you connected to it. They exist in greater numbers where the force is stronger.
You know as these videos keep going on I realize that the same arguments keep getting repeated. “I don’t like jar jar” “ Ughh anakin annoying” “ ugh politics” “Ugh not the way I imagined it would be” “Ugh George Lucas racist” “Ugh bad special effects” “Ugh bad script” “Ugh hate the characters” He has moments of nuance, but they are far in between. Most of them regurgitated arguments. Also I’m getting really tired of midichloran’s are the force arguments. Midichloran’s are the power-cable, not the the power source. And his condescension is really annoying.
I've never seen the midichlorians as retcons, more like a scientific point of view of the force according to the Jedi. It doesn't make Yoda's force speech in Episode V worse at all.
This and the TLJ review turned me away from TNC. Stuckman's reputation also suffered from his TLJ review. They made minced meat out other movies with less plot holes and narrative sins, and yet gave a forgiving pass to TLJ.
@@harlannguyen4048 What's wrong with him? If you've watched his reviews you'd know. Not only are most of his criticisms not credible, he has vulgar and disgusting humor that many would find offensive. He has even been accused of racism.
Wait wait, these peoples issues are things like "the queen of that alien planet in another galaxy, probably before humanity existed, isnt following the rules set forth by *England*"?
The part I love is when he said "I was the one who all along who knew that this movie was going to bad", it's like "Where the hell where you when the sequels were coming out!?!?", since how the movies are structured Return of the Jedi was a conclusive story. Doug was just talking out his ass.
JP So exactly like this guy? I don’t like NC either, but this dude is so arrogant and has such a self righteous sense that he is the one to explain the genius of the prequels. Add in the anger and hostility and this guy is borderline insufferable to me
The prequels are about Anakin Skywalker's back story and his path to the dark side , How Lord sidious/palpatine took over the universe, the relationship between obi one Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker and Luke and Leia's beginning's.
The funny thing about the question of why they have a child queen is that if you think about it who has the most to gain from having an impressionable young girl in such a high seat of power? Palpatine. Padme's beloved and respected mentor who's always there to help her. No doubt he's already manipulated her in the past, and he uses her as a puppet to get Valorum out. Not to mention the death of such a young queen would gain so many sympathy points for him that he probably planned that one out from the beginning.
Finally some justice for the prequels, awesome work dude. I've never understood the echo chamber of empty hate for the prequels. I remember watching Revenge of the Sith in the cinema (I was 11) and it was awesome back then as it is now. Don't like the first two as much but they are still good and enjoyable to watch. One thing that truly disgusts me is the people that decided to take out all their pathetic anger on Jake Loyd, the JarJar Binks actor and George Lucas. Jake was just a little boy that got the role of his life time, what an opportunity for him.. yet the fans took it out on him and blamed him instead of celebrating him for the role of Darth fucking Vader. Such a damn shame
Well your own experience of those movies cannot be argued with... But do you consider them great movies? Flawless? Better in each and every way than the OT?
Kal El okay, then that's all fine and dandy. The problem most fans have with the movies is that they are of shitty quality. Yes they might be lovable, but still shit. ;) Or at the very least, not worthy of being part of the SW experience.
@@user-fb5ir3zz8l The characters only got fully realized after the movies came out and the politics were boring, until Darth Plagueis the Wise Novel explained to the audience how the politics got to the current state in the prequels.
Irrelevant Noob Hey!! Don’t knock the prequels, name me one Star Wars soundtrack as good as duel of the fates or battle of heroes or anakin’s dark deeds
I never understood the “racism” argument for some of the prequels characters. Why is it racist? Because they talk differently? What, was George Lucas supposed to portray actual alien accents...?
No, it's a bunch of idiots projecting their own racism onto the movies. Like Nomz said, if you see racism in the Prequels it says more about you than about George Lucas. In Doug's case, I actually don't think he's racist - at least one of his friends is black and they've been working happily together for years - but when it comes to the Prequels, he's been foolish enough to listen to people who are and let it warp his perception.
@@tomnorton4277 you'll surprised who's really racist and who isn't. Just because a white person has a black, asian, native American etc friend or partner doesnt mean they arent racist on the down low
@@dtxspeaks268 I know people like that exist. There's absolutely no evidence that George Lucas is one of them. In fact, all the evidence says that he's one of the least racist people in Hollywood. Ahmed Best was the first motion capture character (Andy Serkis gets all the glory but Best laid the groundwork), Mace Windu was kicking ass as the second most powerful Jedi in the universe in the Prequels, Lando Calrissian was a respected and powerful man in the Originals, and George is married to a black woman. That's A LOT of evidence to prove that he's not racist.
@@tomnorton4277 I was referring to doug Walker and others who accuse george of being racist. Ik George Lucas is probably one of the nicest celebrities out there.
@@TC-tl8ie --Okay, in the defense of those three films they were made on a modest budget and meant to be anniversary specials for the Channel Awesome fans...-- Actually that's not a good enough defense, so nevermind...
This is the reason that I didn't give a shit about movie critics , especially the ones that have huge subscribe fanbase and needed to make "needed" and "accepted" statements to be seen cool and on wave.
That's why I try to find smaller channels on purpose. Like Style is Substance and Rick Worley's channels, underrated channels but very good content. Also, 1 year later lol
I get a bit frustrated when the politics get bashed. When George was doing the interview about TPM I think he was trying not give away that Palpatine was behind the trade dispute. We were assuming the Palpatine we saw was the future Emperor, but we weren't sure yet. The trade dspute was the first chess move in Palpatine's rise to power. That's why Obi Wan sensed something elusive at the beginning of the movie and why Qui Gon told the Queen that this trade dispute didn't make sense and there was something else behind it. In each movie we see Palpatine's rise in power. If there was no politics in the movie and he just became a Emperor at the end of Ep.3 people would complain how he just become Emperor. George did a great job showing Palpatine work his way to the top in the prequels.
The release of The Last Jedi did many things, including showing that the prequels while flawed, were not terrible movies by any stretch of the imagination. It really gets my goat when I hear people defend the Disney Trilogy like it's the best thing ever but will attack the prequels like no tomorrow. The prequels never removed canon from the expanded universe. George Lucas was willing to let other writers and artists have their works of art STAND with his own works. Disney thought their stuff would be so much better that they completely destroyed the Star Wars Canon and gave us agenda driven nonsense.
The prequels never removed canon from the OT... Or themselves. Even Jar jar has a realistic arc and redeeming features. He is a fool, treated as a fool and used by the bad guy to gain power, despite his best intentions and actions. A tragic character that it's blamed despite the many of the politicians there agreeing with him. He was the scapegoat. Compae him to Hux, Purple Hair or Tico.
I love how people (mainly Doug) says "If you like TPM, then you like poop jokes!" Even though there is only 2 of them, and only one of them I consider a poop joke (the one at the Podrace).
14:35 MITOCHONDRIA IS THE POWERHOUSE OF THE CELL Also by the way it is now widely accepted that we indeed at some point as single-cell organisms swallowed bacteria but didn't digest it and developed the symbiotic relationship.
I love these videos that you've made for the Prequels. I'm happy that someone is standing up for them- I love them. But please understand, not every OT fan looks down on these movies. I was 5 when A New Hope was originally released and I was there in the theater. I grew up with the OT... and I also love the prequels. There are other people out there like me. Now more than ever, I think.
Anomaly Inc I don’t understand TLJ defenders who praise Rian Johnson that he made it that anyone can be a Jedi. That’s always been a thing! That’s how the Jedi recruited members by identifying random children in the galaxy with high force power and brought them in. There’s only ever been one known lineage of Jedi, the Skywalkers. I don’t understand ruin Johnson going out of his way to establish an already known fact.
@@ricardodiaz2848 The skywalkers are also a Plagueis creation so no other force sensitives (unless they are force wounds or created via midichlorian manipulation) can match the skywalkers, this is pretty well showcased in the EU with Darth Bane being the chosen one of the sith and having nowhere near the power of a sith lord like Darth sidious let alone a skywalker. The Skywalkers are Tier 0 chosen ones in potential that can even contend with the weakest Celestials while the other chosen ones are at best tier 1 in potential and yet there was one way to prevent the skywalkers and other chosen ones from being haxed and OP which was to have them not train up to their full potential in the force, thats the way the EU worked and why we loved Darth Vader, he was forced to work harder with less, after as Anakin, Skywalker wasted his potential.
And of course force sensitivity can’t be genetics, since Jedi can’t have children. The Skywalkers were an exception. I think everybody has some amount of midichlorians, but some (complety by chance) happen to have a bigger amount, and they are offered Jedi training to make good use of their specificity. I personally like the midichlorians, because it gives some kind of scientific explanation, but it doesn’t mean people are SELECTED...
"Queens can't be children." Four words that by themselves prove that one dude has been paying zero attention to history, and therefore shouldn't be criticizing a political aspect of a movie.
Queen Victoria was 18 when she ascended to the throne. She had only just reached the legal drinking age and suddenly she had the weight of the whole United Kingdom on her shoulders. Granted that's not as big a responsibility as ruling an entire planet but it's still a daunting task for a teenager.

midichloreans were a interesting idea though perhaps the true thing that could have done more of was actually refine and explain it better to how it was still a spiritual and uniting factor of the universe and the force as one
@Latvian Dragon honestly, the nostalgia critic critiques put out by misanthropony (who actually voiced the indoraptor in shinobi's fallen kingdom series) we're miles above shinobi's videos. Then again, that might of been less down to the quality of the product, as opposed to who made more scummy and condescending remarks towards Mauler.
As someone who always loved the prequels and defended them since I was a teen, I was always pissed with how the NC bashed the prequels, ignoring so many parts that made them good, yet praising the OT for the same problems.
If you don't like, the prequels, you don't know nothing of the StarWars universe, the most epic lightsaber fight ever, and great caracters development !
Evan Lee Buxton Not always, that’s true. But if you don’t understand a movie (e.g. the political conflict depicted in it), you probably won’t like it. That’s NOT to say that everyone who disliked the prequels didn’t understand them.
Kids love the prequels. Kids even love Jar Jar. At the Phantom Menace reissue in 2012, I sat in the theater in front of a six year old that was patiently explaining the movie to his dad, although I’m pretty sure the dad was already a Star Wars fan. When Darth Maul first appeared, the kid gasped and then whispered to his dad, “That’s Darth Maul- He’s BAD.” When they arrived at the Jedi Temple for the first time, he said reverentially, “That’s MASTER Yoda…” And, when Jar Jar first showed up, the kid immediately giggled with excitement and then said, “That’s Jar Jar, Dad- He’s FUNNY.” Jar Jar is an audience proxy character for children, he covers his eyes when something scary is happening, he’s confused and overwhelmed by the big events around him, as children would be. And I think in that function, which is his intended function, he is undeniably a success.
@@VibingMeike Don't remember that from his video. Got the text from a folder on my computer, full of cool quotes, although I don't always remember where I get them from. For exampe: Another quote I've recently posted is: "Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”
@@samlerf Oh wow... That's an amazing quote, I feel like I got to remember that one. And I checked your first quote, in either Rick's essay The Force Awakens v.s the Prequels or in his Star Wars documentary he said it
The prequels were and are really good star wars movies. Sure, Jar Jar was a mis-step. And Jake Loyd perhaps wasn't the greatest cast choice for Anakin. The dialogue was hokey sometimes. But the stories were brilliant, the characters themselves (other than Jar Jar) were great, the action was spot on and the music, as always with star wars, was just perfect. Once you got past Jar Jar and Anakin in episode 1, the rest of the prequels were great, and they fit perfectly in the star wars universe. Even the midichlorians thing made perfect sense really. Surely the jedi would have some tool to test how strong in the force someone would potentially have? Because they would usually take very very young children, even babies, to train as jedi. How can you test a toddler for force power? You just take a sample of blood, see how responsive it is to the force, however that may be done, and then you decide if they would be strong enough to be jedi in training. Ignoring Jar Jar, there isn't really anything wrong with the movies aside from a bit of pacing in episode 3 (they turned Anakin way too quickly from best buds with Obi Wan to a mortal enemy of all that is good) and some of the dialogue being hokey and cheesy.
@Sonymnms 52 The real problem with him was how prominent he was in that first episode. He had more screen time than almost any other character. In episode 2, he wasn't nearly so bad because we didn't see him much. The only stupid thing about him in episode 2 and 3 was that he somehow held a position of power in the senate, which would never have happened, even with his ridiculous and clumsy "heroics" in episode 1. He was just too stupid.
@@w0bbl3r that was the point, he was a foolish incompetent politician set up to give Palps more power, Palps made sure to only have ignorant fools and sellouts at the senate so he couldnt be undermined, it was why he started to get awry of Padme when she started to see his plans to hold on to power.
@@sebas8225 Oh I understand that Palpatine wanted him there, so he could grant the emergency powers to the chancellor. Why would such an intelligent and strong leader as Padme be so foolish, how would the Naboo people, including his own Gungans allow him to gain such a position of power. The chancellor could not dictate anything at that time. That was the point of the thing. I find it highly unlikely that Palpatine would have just said "Oh, Padme, would you mind having Jar Jar fucking Binks as your second in command, in case something happens to you so he can make decisions for the Naboo people?". And even if he did, Padme wouldn't just allow it. She was extremely loyal to the whole process of the republic, she wouldn't allow someone to tell her to have such a nincompoop in a position of any power.
I just watched the prequels after seeing “the rise of Skywalker” and Jake Lloyd as a 9 year-old is a far superior actor than Daisy Ridley. I mean she only makes two faces; 1 confused and constipated with mouth open (this is her signature look), and 2 confused and constipated with mouth closed (a surprise to be sure, but a welcomed one).
@@VibingMeike Hayden Christiansen also has very expressive eyes. Look at him when he looks up from Shmi's dead body in AOTC. His eyes are full of pure rage and that's not easy to fake. One of the design choices in ROTS was to use CGI to turn his eyes yellow to symbolise Anakin's fall but due to Hayden's death stare, George Lucas didn't need the CGI at all. It's still a neat artistic choice but unnecessary because Hayden can just shoot a glare without any CGI and you know that's Darth Vader. Hell, even Doug admitted that in his 11 Good Things about the Star Wars Prequels video.
@@tomnorton4277 Oh yes, I agree! He can also express love very well, look at him when Padmé tells him she's pregnant in ROTS, or when Padmé confessed her love for him at the arena of Geonosis in AOTC. He's a far better actor than people give him credit for.
@@VibingMeike Also watch Hayden and Natalie Portman's body language in the fire place scene. Regardless of what one thinks of the dialogue, if they can't see that Anakin and Padme are into each other just from the way they hold themselves, then they're fucking blind. Besides the body language, I'm fine with the dialogue in that scene because I've got a soft spot for corny dialogue. When it's self-aware, it comes across as completely genuine like a character is saying "yes, I sound cringeworthy and lame but fuck it, I don't care because this is how I feel". George Lucas knows he's a corny guy so his dialogue is self aware, if not from Anakin and Padme then at least from the man who wrote those characters. This is also something I noticed in the Victoria series and Alita: Battle Angel. Some of the dialogue is corny but it's partially BECAUSE it's corny that it feels authentic, like someone is opening up and allowing themselves to be vulnerable regardless of how uncool they sound.
@@tomnorton4277 Well, I'm not a big fan of that scene, but I totally get why it has a dramatic tone, even tho it can be a bit too over-the-top. And the dialogue isn't my favorite either. It's not because of the tone but it feels like it comes straight from a Shakespearean drama, most of the other dialogue had some level of moderation. I understand that Anakin is romantically illiterate but it feels like it's just a bit too much if that makes sense?. But overall I think the scene is not even close to the travesty some people make it out to be.
wespozo just because its not the worst movie ever, as some haters thinks, Attack of the Clones is certainly not "amazing", its a mediocre movie with awful dialogue, lets be real.
each movie has a different tone and story, so that causes the major difference, each film in the series has its own feel in the prequels and the original trillogy, George Lucas tries to honor a different idea or film with each movie i think
For anyone who didn’t know, Doug couldn’t even figure out what the Randall’s evil plans were in Monster’s Inc., so why should we expect him to figure the political conflict of these movies?
Children can follow this movies, but grown adults can't? You don't need to be versed in trade negotiations and politics to see the bad guy using this guys and sparking a war in his favor to gain political power. And that he is corrupting the main kid. Read the text that explains who the actors are and pay attention as much as a 12 year old can. It is reduced and simplified? Sure. But it's the basic interpretation.
@@dancorneanu9144 Yeah. Even if I didn’t understand the intricacies of the senate scenes when I was a kid, I could still tell who the main characters were, who the bad guys were, and that the main villain wanted to gain power, and that the senate ultimately couldn’t help it.
"You don't elect kings!" I think Poland-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Holy Roman Empire, Mongols, Napolean and several other examples in our history would beg to differ!
Omg the midiclorians again...how hard is it to understand that George made them up so he can explain why not everyone is a jedy/sith and also why sone jedy/sith are more powerfull then others...its hard for me to understand all of this prequel hate...
I’m not gonna lie, JarJar was never a problem for me. He was who he needed to be and Anakin was a child, played by a child. What did everyone expect from him? Oh yeah, they expected him to be a badass like Darth Vader. Also Nostalgia Critic comes off as a smug know it all who thinks he’s right about everything. Something about that just rubs me the wrong way.
When i was a child and just wanted laser fights, the prequels seemed dull. But as I grew up and rewatched the series I loved the prequels so much more than maybe even the original trilogy. It had some moments but it was all about depth and learning these characters and why they acted the way they did.
I love Doug Walker and to his credit, he made a video defending aspects of the Prequels, including Hayden Christiansen's performance. But he's not a Star Wars fan. It's obvious that he's not passionate about the franchise and he probably never was because he has a limited understanding of the lore. Also, Doug's brother, Rob, is actually deluded enough to say that The Rise of Skywalker is better than the Prequels and even said that he thought people were crazy if they disagreed. Like his brother, Rob seems like a great guy but he's clearly no Star Wars fan and I stopped watching his and Doug's review on The Rise of Skywalker when he said he thought Prequel fans were crazy. Anybody who genuinely thinks the Disney Trilogy is better than the Prequels has some kind of mental abnormality. And yes, I realise the incredibly hypocritical double standard I'm applying here but I just can't comprehend how anybody could think that the Prequels are the worst Star Wars films because the storytelling for them is Shakespearean compared to the Disney Trilogy. I can understand it coming from low IQ drones, nostalgia blinded fans, and hacks who are either shilling for Disney or simply can't admit that they were wrong, but Rob isn't even a passionate Star Wars fan and he and Doug have been doing great without it. I can't think of any motive for them to shill and the hype for Star Wars is all but dead, which means there has to be some faulty mental wiring for Rob to side with The Rise of Skywalker over the Prequels.
Also, another thing I feel people always "forget" about the prequels; they may not be perfect movies but they definitely pushed the cinema world forward, just like the original trilogy had done in its time. I know the CGI is the subject of many criticisms from our post 2010 eyes but at the time the prequels came out, the effects were gorgeous and, for many people, it was their first time seeing somthing so grandiose on screen. Lucas tapped into the very best equipment and surrounded himself with masters of special effects. Clearly, the three movies changed the face of cinema, after them no one could unsee it and return to lesser effects, just like Peter Jackson did with the LotR saga at approximately the same time. Now, you can say whatever you want about Lucas' realization being too academic, too bland, too static, etc, especially if you compare it with Jackson and his more "entertaining" style as I did, but the man, while not being the most remarkable director, set the standards for what we have now in terms of cinematography and effects. Obviously, none of these movies are flawless masterpieces, but you can't just chose to ignore how important their release was for cinema and film-making in itself.
Prequels had new worlds, new characters, and a new story That stays within the realm of reality of the OT. The sequels are shitting on old characters, old established logical rules(lightspeed v hyperspace, the force, etc) and voids the whole PURPOSE of the OT
It's ironic how doug's review so far is the most nuanced of them all.. I mean yes it is still alot of cliché's but it is the first one to call out the OT for also suffering many issues and admitting he likes the looks of the movie and how it is made.. I sometimes even doubt though if these reviewers really dislike it, or they are just doing it for the hype...
It's rather telling that the PT seems to be getting better over time, despite its flaws (and it has a LOT of flaws). The ST has, perhaps inadvertently, established the PT as a "true" SW trilogy. The ST is just a mish-mosh of competing ideas, Disney's inevitable politicking, forcing lackluster new characters into the universe while trashing the OT heroes, and negating all the effort devoted to defeating genuinely terrifying space Nazis.
I understood what was happening in episode 1s politics when I was a child, if you claim you can’t you haven’t watched it in a while or weren’t paying attention because I can still remember what was happening after not having watched them in a few years
I'm a huge fan of Doug and his show, but good god, the man's opinions baffle me sometimes. Did you know he also disliked The Emperor's New Groove? How is that humanly possible?
Come to really appreciate the style behind the prequels over the years. If the OT was a homage to the adventure serials, the Pt is a homage to "classic" Hollywood, the era of Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Rebel Without a Cause, Breakfast at Tiffany's, certain shots, lighting, framing and pacing scream that era.
JJ Binks is an absolute pimp. He kicks total ass in the battle of Naboo. Not to mention "Youssa thinkin youssa people gonna die??"... Makes me chuckle every time.
I just want to point out that there was a lot of usage of practical effects in 2 & 3 as well. The Petranaki arena, various bits of Geonosian architecture, Kashyyyk and the Wookiees, Utapau, even Mustafar were all built as miniatures and then the charatcers were inserted later.
Not some society. Prominent Medieval European states do that all the time. For example, from 16th to the end of 19th century, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth elects their kings; the forefather of modern day Germany the Holy Roman Empire (one of the most important European states along with France, Spain, and Britain) from 10 to 19th century elects their Kaisers for the most of the Empire's existence. An ignorant douche is gonna act like an ignorant douche; end of the story.
Queen Victoria was alive just over a century ago and she was 18 years old when she ascended to the throne. You don't have to go very far back in history to find teenage monarchs. Granted, you have to go further back to find literal child monarchs but Edward VI was 9 when he became King and died at the age of 15, which is only a year older than Padme was in TPM, and Tutankhamun was 8 or 9 when he became Pharaoh and died only 10 years later.
This is where you and I differ about finding him “funny”. I saw “Channel Awesomes” vile, unfunny, and disrespectful and out of touch review of Sailor Moon. Now if Sailor Moon isn’t your thing that’s fine, but give legitimate and insightful critiques about the show and not some lude and crude “jokes” that it’s nothing more than boner bait for young boys. Instead of realizing it’s based on Greek Mythology and to understand the decision that we’re made for the show. So he already looses any and all credibility to me. Not for not liking Sailor Moon but how he and his channel just bashed it with no facts or basis.
In reference to the Trade Federation and Watto being racist, Doug says everything is racist because he is an SJW. In the first Disneycember, he constantly nitpicked stuff like that such as Peter Pan, The Black Crows from Dumbo, and Lady and the Tramp.
Wow I love your logic champ. Fellow Aussie here and I admittedly don't care for the prequels too much, but that is my subjective view, I too found the unnecessary hatred baffling. If you don't like something fair enough, you don't have to be toxic about it. I love the OT as I was a child of 4-5 years old when I first watched A New Hope, and it still gives me the feels. After rewatching the prequels, I can now appreciate the effort and care taken to make them, I just find them to not tickle my feels the same way the OT does, this doesn't make the prequels bad. There is my 2 cents mate. You have earned a sub from me tiger!!!!

Time for honesty. I always loved the prequels. I truly did. I did find Jar Jar Binks to be a sad character that no one helped. But that would have derailed the storyline a bit. He was the joke no one laughed at. But it Did not ruin the movies for me.

The prequels did something The originals did not do that being world-building, which is one of the most important parts of a story.

Dont forget the improved lightsaber fights and the introduction of silent sith antagonist Maul.
shadow librarian ...
Personally I don't see anything wrong with them. Anyone could follow all of them without problem.
Why?
Looking at them, all 4 sequences are edited pretty well.
@@EarFarce4 I'm pretty sure they made changes after that screening.
That kinda means the movie has a pacing problem, and why he can’t remove major scenes in editing. Something Lucas realized which yes bad pacing does the effect the quality of a film. Does it mean Lucas thought it was awful, most likely not.
ReonMagnum that's exactly what rlm said lol
The fact of the matter is simple: after bashing George Lucas for more than a decade... it's impossible for these people to accept that others have managed to do a way, way, way worse job than he did.

@Grapthar's Hebrew Hammer > She is Palpatine's grand daughter
Well...
Their announcements meant sh*t. They announced and sold TFA in the OT characters, but we know how that went.
@Grapthar's Hebrew Hammer Actually the part about Rey being Palpatine's granddaughter was correct. However, lineage doesn't mean you can use the force without training. Just look at Luke for example.
Vader is not the Anti Christ, He is a flawed savior.

"Ruined my childhood...."
Only Eobard Thawne can do that
Konrad Wallenrod - Danko Sekulic The reason why some people say that, and although in the prequels’ case I don’t think they had a good case as for why it was the case I think that their experience can’t be denied, is because although no one can time travel, one’s memory can still be affected nonetheless.
Hence if you right bad prequels or sequels (or that people don’t like your prequel/sequel), it’s only normal that some viewers will now see the characters or their actions in such light, which will decrease their enjoyment.
i find your lack of stabilized sound level disturbing
I know :( Apologies

As a fan of Doug, I'm actually ashamed of him. Back in the day, he had balls. I won't unsubscribe but he lost a chunk of my respect when he praised The Force Awakens and subsequent Star Wars videos have proven to me that he knows very little about the franchise. There was nothing wrong with Jake casting. Padme being a teenage Queen was also brilliant. She was a teenager taking care of her planet and taking charge of the operation to retrieve it back, including give orders to a Jedi and his Padawan. I just REALLY hate it whenever people say TPM had no main character. THERE WAS A MAIN CHARACTER! HIS NAME IS QUI-GON JINN!

My friend blew my fucking mind when he said this:
"Medichlorians: a plot device introduced by George Lucas to place the upmost importance on Anakin Skywalker's necessity to be trained as a Jedi and be understood as the reason why Darth Vader can't over-throw the Emperor by himself.

Vader is quoted as saying "The power to destroy planets is insignificant next to the power of the force."
Vader fucking knew this and you bet your ass the Emperor and the wisest of The Jedi Council knew it as well.
However, if one is just chosen by prophesy, then there is no way to artificially manipulate the force. Powers are earned by training and leveling up if you will.

Sincerely,
Someone who has seen ALL the movies in the theater upon release and loves ALL of them.

"Midicholrians means a blood transfusion means now I can use the force that's so stupid"
It makes more sense than the original idea.
Midichlorians REACT to force sensitivity. They don't provide it.
You know as these videos keep going on I realize that the same arguments keep getting repeated.
“I don’t like jar jar”
“ Ughh anakin annoying”
“ ugh politics”
“Ugh not the way I imagined it would be”
“Ugh George Lucas racist”
“Ugh bad special effects”
“Ugh bad script”
“Ugh hate the characters”

Midichloran’s are the power-cable, not the the power source.

They do keep getting repeated thats the point lol

The part I love is when he said "I was the one who all along who knew that this movie was going to bad", it's like "Where the hell where you when the sequels were coming out!?!?", since how the movies are structured Return of the Jedi was a conclusive story. Doug was just talking out his ass.

Still better than Anomaly.

Irrelevant Noob nope. But I still love them

Meike i can fully relate to your statement
"the power of hype", how ironic!
AHAAHAH I know right
I get a bit frustrated when the politics get bashed.
Rey is a Mary Sue too, so that severely affects it.
For real, those scenes are like 2 seconds long, like okay Mr Walker
And Doug is the same guy that does gross body humor in each of his "reviews"
The prequels are far better than the sequels. At least they are Star wars. And they didn't disrespect the accomplishments of the OT heroes

That’s NOT to say that everyone who disliked the prequels didn’t understand them.
I feel we should all write George Lucas letters thanking him for making Star Wars and apologizing for how he has been treated.
Kids love the prequels. Kids even love Jar Jar. At the Phantom Menace reissue in 2012, I sat in
the theater in front of a six year old that was patiently explaining the movie to his dad, although
I’m pretty sure the dad was already a Star Wars fan. When Darth Maul first appeared, the kid
gasped and then whispered to his dad, “That’s Darth Maul- He’s BAD.” When they arrived at the
Jedi Temple for the first time, he said reverentially, “That’s MASTER Yoda…” And, when Jar
Jar first showed up, the kid immediately giggled with excitement and then said, “That’s Jar Jar,
Dad- He’s FUNNY.” Jar Jar is an audience proxy character for children, he covers his eyes when
something scary is happening, he’s confused and overwhelmed by the big events around him, as
children would be. And I think in that function, which is his intended function, he is undeniably a
success.
Why does this sound so familiar?
Rick Worley...?
@@VibingMeike Don't remember that from his video. Got the text from a folder on my computer, full of cool quotes, although I don't always remember where I get them from. For exampe: Another quote I've recently posted is:
"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves.

He was just too stupid.
he was the fulcrum of the prequels, a sithe lord hiding in plain sight
@@w0bbl3r that was the point, he was a foolish incompetent politician set up to give Palps more power, Palps made sure to only have ignorant fools and sellouts at the senate so he couldnt be undermined, it was why he started to get awry of Padme when she started to see his plans to hold on to power.
@@sebas8225 Oh I understand that Palpatine wanted him there, so he could grant the emergency powers to the chancellor.
But Palpatine was already chancellor when Jar Jar became second in command for Padme.
Yup, and Hayden Christensen's acting with his face is also fantastic, far superior to Daisy Ridley IMO.
But overall I think the scene is not even close to the travesty some people make it out to be.

each movie has a different tone and story, so that causes the major difference, each film in the series has its own feel in the prequels and the original trillogy, George Lucas tries to honor a different idea or film with each movie i think

When i was a child and just wanted laser fights, the prequels seemed dull. But as I grew up and rewatched the series I loved the prequels so much more than maybe even the original trilogy. You killed him and those blind nostalgia OT only haters.
Good Work and can't wait for next one ;)
You forgot to mention that the monotone voice the queen uses can easily be copied by her double Sabé.
CGI Yoda still looks nice to this day
Queens actually could be children. Mary Queen of Scots was 6 days old when she became queen
Doug: "they were just tapping those lightsticks together"
Escrimists: "You take that back... NOW"
Prequels had new worlds, new characters, and a new story That stays within the realm of reality of the OT.
I love how Doug always likes to criticize others for terrible movie ideas and yet the Channel Awesome Trilogy exists...
30:00 seeing Nomz without a hat feels wrong.
Your gameplay makes me so sad that ‘The Force Unleashed’ isn’t canon anymore 😭😭
I grew up with the prequels and I love them. Now, the last Jedi ruined the future of Star Wars for me
JJ Binks is an absolute pimp.
He kicks total ass in the battle of Naboo.
Not to mention "Youssa thinkin youssa people gonna die??"... Makes me chuckle every time.
mad lad
"Only a Sith deals in absolutes"
I just want to point out that there was a lot of usage of practical effects in 2 & 3 as well. The Petranaki arena, various bits of Geonosian architecture, Kashyyyk and the Wookiees, Utapau, even Mustafar were all built as miniatures and then the charatcers were inserted later.
When i was young and even older and seen the prequels I never had any complaint because the whole story made sense and it came together beautifully
a queen can be a child, look up history Walker, some societies even elected there chiefs/king.
Not some society. Prominent Medieval European states do that all the time. For example, from 16th to the end of 19th century, Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
elects their kings; the forefather of modern day Germany the Holy Roman Empire (one of the most important European states along with France, Spain, and Britain) from 10 to 19th century elects their Kaisers for the most of the Empire's existence. An ignorant douche is gonna act like an ignorant douche; end of the story.
@@pypy1986820 I know, but thanks for giving out some examples.
@@tomnorton4277 tells Walker never really understands history, except the Hollywood version.
"The death of comedy." "The death of acting."
Wtf is he on about?!
He must of been referring to his movies and his shilling for MLM's at the end of his "reviews"
Keep the PT love coming!!!!! Love'in it!!!!
I love all your Revenge of the Prequels videos. They are awesome.
The old fans are dying, the new fans were born with the prequels and special editions, the hate for George will fade.
Since it’s Doug Walker (someone who thinks Sailor Moon is jailbait) I don’t think he understands Star Wars.
Shows how ignorant Doug is of history. CHILD kings an queens have always been a thing and feudal lords have elected their kings and queens as well.
I don't love the prequels, but they don't deserve the hate, they had world building, wich is important for any story
Thats A Refreshing perspective Right There
Thanks Mate I Appreciate That Very Much :)
@@anomalyinc3239 No worries champ. Keep showing your views with the logic and intellect you show and I'm sure you will go far my friend. It's very encouraging to see that you see and analyse points logically only using emotion for emphasis, as opposed to just reacting emotionally without thought or logic to an argument or point, this is why I like your work mate.
Time for honesty. I always loved the prequels. I truly did.
I did find Jar Jar Binks to be a sad character that no one helped. But that would have derailed the storyline a bit. He was the joke no one laughed at. But it Did not ruin the movies for me.
