This filled the dance floor back in the day. If you don't wanna bust a move to this tune, you don't got no soul. And the tall black woman with the afro is RuPaul
Kate and Cindy’s voices are gold. You should check out the B-52s song “Roam” where their voices together are just pure gold. Big love from New England! 👍
Juke box. So many choices. In the 70’s you put your quarters in and waited until the machinery grabbed your 45 and played it in sequence to all the other choices. Usually you would go back to your table and wait. On a busy night the music never ended. It was loud, and clear! Memories!Later, Cd’s replaced 45’s.
I was lucky to be a pro musician from the early 1980s through 1994. You are definitely picking up on an important element. Back then, you could do a show and play new music and everybody would dance and groove just as hard as to their favorite songs. People danced so freely and it was definitely a groovy time. Cities and colleges towns had excellent local venues for shows. And college radio was a MAJOR force. Huge corporations like iHeart Radio have contributed a lot to the demise of really good original music and bands with excellent musicians and singers.
Man, I love me some B-52s!!! I also love watching younger folks really get a kick out of some of these older tunes! There's so much good music out there and I'm sad that I'll never get to hear every one of them! Sad that there's no cool places like the Love Shack. and no more jukeboxes! It pains me, too! Thanks for the blast from the past and your awesome channel! Now I'm all energized and ready to go! 😊
Hey man, that's a great thing to emphasize up front, about losing a band member and then placing it in time a little bit. Because I know this is all long before your time so that's really impressive. Anyway I'm happy to be back on your channel and can't wait to watch this. Check out the producer Brian Eno and his connection to other Cutting Edge things that go way back to the very early 70s, like Roxy Music and Brian Eno solo work.
I'm 59 years old now. But the saying that is so true is: I might be old......but I got to see all the cool bands live! The B-52's opening up for The Who in 1982 is one of those times that was indeed very cool! Joan Jett and the Blackhearts on the bill that night was simply the cherry on top.

Doing the dancing down the line is like they did on Soul Train. I use to love watching Soul Train when I was young. The way the Jukebox works is you just walk up to it and put in your change, put in your selection and it keeps record of what order your selection was in. If 10 people were before you and each chose two songs your song was going to be number 21.
The best party band there is. I always love the B-52‘s. Kate Pearson and Cindy Wilson are likely two of the best harmonizers in the business. Their voices together are amazing. This video is so cool. And that’s RuPaul dancing in the white top and fro! All are from Georgia. When people put money in a jukebox, the machine will play the songs in the order they are paid for. So yes, a queue.
We had the DJ play this at my grandmother's 80th birthday party. It was so much fun watching her and her friends on the dance floor. They were loving it!
You put your money in the Jukebox, made your choices and it just played the songs in the order they were inputted. So there was no waiting to get to the jukebox...it was first come first served and you just hoped that whoever owned the joint you were at had all good music so it didn't matter. You did have to have quarters, lots of them if you wanted to play the jukebox. "Jukebox money" meant COINS. There were no debit cards or Apple Pay back then. Most of them didn't take dollar bills, either. Coins only for decades. This song is so special to me because it came out the year I moved to Miami Beach and that was a FUN time.
I am right at your first stop in you're talking about the backing vocals being so involved and really a huge part of it, and always keep in mind it's the two of them together that are absolutely phenomenal. They are both gifted singers but it's the two of them together. But I would say also that what they're doing even more in the direction of what you're talking about, is that they feel so involved because in the course they keep going, it starts off as a call and answer kind of thing but then they always just keep sustaining these tones and then doing short notes and just whatever it is to provide a backdrop to his really quirky lead vocals. And frequency wise they've got his voice so low, and that they're belting it out in this upper register and then you have all the music in between, so it's a really nice balance. Part of that again goes back to Brian eno, the producer.
YAZZZZZZZ, I remember dancing to this classic back in the day! ! When you didn't have to worry about getting beat up or shot, everyone just had a good time! ! !

A jukebox was a machine where you walked up, looked at the selection of songs, inserted a quarter, and pressed the alpha - numeric button for the song you want, like A19 for the Temptations' "Heard it Through the Grapevine." Depending if other people made selections before you, too you'd wait for your song to play. Bring your jukebox money means having a bunch of change on hand because usually you couldn't get change from the bartender. Such fun times.
And the 45’s (vinyl) were lined up. You could watch the machine go and grab the new 45 and put it on the player , then the needle would come down and the music would play.

Picture this. 1975 in Macon, GA. My brother, his best friend Craig Bennett and I were jumping on the trampoline in Craig’s backyard. Craig was excited his older brother was coming home for the weekend from Athens, GA and bringing his friends. At some point, this car pulls in the driveway - we are still on the trampoline - and the craziest group of people I have ever seen get out. It was the B-52s. Craig’s older brother eventually married Cindy Wilson ( big pink hat). My ten year old mine was blown! Four years later I saw them on Saturday Night Live performing “Rock Lobster.”

Jukeboxes are the BEST! Very beautifully crafted, with lights, some that flashed and fancy woodwork, fancy metallic designs, and some had themes to their designs. Some people collect or restore old ones and those can be worth a lot of money. New ones are made by only a few companies around the world, and cost thousands of dollars. Once in a while, a bar or restaurant might have one, but usually only for show, not one that works. So the way most worked was, most jukeboxes were about 5 + feet tall and 2 to 3 feet wide, and you see the selection of music listed in the case, and each selection has a number/letter combo, so you insert your money, press the buttons for the song you want and it plays. In the older ones, you can see the mechanism actually pick out the record (they were 45’s.) But if people before you picked songs, those play first, so it is like a queue, first-come, first served. Some restaurants would have a mini-jukebox at each booth or table, with fewer selections but was still fun. Sometimes people would pay for the same song to repeat a bunch of times. Comedian John Mulaney tells a story about when he was a teenager, he and a friend paid to repeat a (obnoxious) song 40 times in a row. 👍👍👍
I'm in Stockholm, Sweden and one of my favorite coffeshops is a complete retro place with tiny jukeboxes on the wall, meant for each booth. Idk if they still work, but they did in the 90s.originaks from the 1950s man. Jukeboxes are fun!
Jukebox, usually work you get to picks( songs 3 for a dollar ( back in the day), and it just played the songs picked, so if 2 people were a head then to listened to their songs first.lol love playing Light my Fire by the Doors because it was a long song to get moneys worth 😂😂
When we were in the Air Force in 1980, stationed in Omaha Nebraska, my husband and friends would play The Bunny Hop, a really old song, over and over until they finally took it out, lol
I grew up in that era. Graduated in 75 and boy did my generation have a blast. I'm glad that I got to experience that time. We've got some great memories!
Oh Shon, you need to dig deep in to the B52's. It's a fun ride. This video is how it was then. We weren't whining about this and that, we were all partying, together!
Even when this came out originally it was a WTF moment. The B52s were an established band but at least here in the UK had kind of been a fleeting entity in the charts. At the time there was a kind of 60s revival going in with mainstream music. You had De La Soul bringing hippy vibes into Rap music, maybe a Tribe Called Quest too. But as I always do - Im gonna recommend "Roam" another great feel good song by The B52s with bags of energy. Also "Rock Lobster" a much earlier song that will give you some questions when you hear it lol. Thanks for this reaction, great insight as always.
I bartended, during this era! I was head bartender and on Saturday nights our little pub turned into like a private club! I had 4 girls that waited tables, 3 would come behind the bar with me, one girl watched the floor, when this song came on! We preformed this song(lipsink) behind the bar! It was tradition once a night. We had so much fun back then. It was just a short break in serving, but it was always a highlight for the patrons! I was a singer so was always on as I worked! Tips were good that night!lol This song brings back fond memories of my 20’s! Thanks for posting and I found you just by chance!❤️ I’m now 62 now, and can’t even imagine doing these things now!lol
The B-52's were very big in the new wave/alternative scene and finally broke through to mainstream with Love Shack. If you want to hear more, try Rock Lobster, Planet Claire, Cake, Roam, Legal Tender, Mesopotamia, there are so many more!
Shon, you would've fit right into the 80s, you'd have loved it! I was in high school & college through the 80s & it was just how it looks in these videos. We had so much fun, the atmosphere was fun, the vibe...it was so great. Glad you liked this song, great reaction!
Get ready, this gone be long. My youngest daughter turned 16 in 1995. I borrowed an old Checker airport limo from a friend that collects cars. It had 8 doors. 4 on each side. I told her I had a surprise for her birthday. Invite 14 friends and we’ll all go the drive-in movie. The old Checker airport limo was a project car, primer gray, but it ran. No stereo so I told her to bring her boombox and play what you want. She put in on this song on a loop and we rolled with it blasting over and over and over all around, cruising the small Oklahoma town we were in. Laughing, singing carrying on having a blast. Cruising the Sonic Drive-In. Had a whole damn parade following us around town!! Good times man!! ✌🏻😊 Fun toon! Thanks for your great vibes every damn time!
Olivia Newton John had a lot of hit songs, one of them was "Please Mr. Please". The lyric goes "Please Mr. please, don't play B-17, it was our song, it was his song, but it's over..." I think the song was about a girl who worked in a restaurant that had a jukebox, anyway, she didn't want to be reminded of her ex. Talking about dancing, I miss "Soul Train" with Don Cornelius where all the best dancers were developing the best moves. The were popping and locking in the 70's with the crazy clothes, what a time... Love you man, your enthusiasm is contagious..
They still have digital jukeboxes in bars these days. The cash ones worked the same way. Except instead of paying through an app you had to walk up to the machine & feed dollar bills into it (like a vending machine). Then you pick your songs & you're in a queue behind anybody that already paid for & picked songs before you.
Listen to "Roam" by the B-52s. In the 1980's we used to dance in the bay window of a downtown Albany club. We didn't care who was looking. We just had fun!
I'm from the south and have never heard it but that is not what it meant in this song. It implied that the roof of The Love Shack had a rusted roof. The lady that sings that says that part came to her all of a sudden as she was thinking of what the building might look like.
it's a good thing I closed the windows before I watched your reaction. At one point you were lamenting the loss of "Love Shacks" and I began laughing out loud and kept laughing for some time. You, Sir are a genuine hoot. Thanks for the smiles.
i'm so glad you younger cats are finally looking at stuff from the older days. i was raised (90s) on stuff all the way back to the thirties, so now i have a very wide spectrum of interests and i can get real enjoyment out of just about every era of movies and music.

I love love the B-52s.
Grad school in Athens at UGA.
Tin roof! RUSTED!
4:59 That's a juke box on the left scrolling by. My favorite ones had these flip menu's at every table in the cafe so you didn't even need to walk up to the box.
In Portland, we have regular classes called ecstatic dance where anyone any everyone could dance, with themselves or others. There’s incredibly eclectic, talented djs to lead the way. Great reaction Shon!
Just a great summer feel, cruising down the coast road roof down music up the smell of salt on the air. Midnight fires on the beach - perfect 👌
An ABSOLUTE MUST HEAR,, The B-52's
"Rock Lobster"..TRUST ME on this one my music lovin' brother!! 🔥
no its an idiots song and annoying
This song is on my FSOAT list (Favorite Songs of All Time). This one makes you want to roll your car windows down and crank it up! (Maybe not right now or you'll get a car full of snow where I am.) Their song "Roam" is a banger too.
the brunette is on rem's single shiny happy people,it's worth a reation.
did you notice rupaul? he was the tall skinny one with the big afro crop top and shorts.
i saw his when it came out before i'd heard of rupaul.saw it again after knowing rupaul and had a i never knew he was in this at the time moment.
This video was an absolute MTV staple back in the day. You could not watch MTV on Saturday Night without seeing this video.
The B-52s are the ultimate party band. RIP Ricky Wilson.
This came out when I was in college. You couldn’t go to a party without this song blasting 🤙🏼
Such a satisfying song. Just as fresh today as when it came out.
ROCK LOBSTER!
Rock lobster wasn’t a song I liked, although I did like this one. Is something wrong with me? LOL
@@denisemay6807ehh I get why it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. Gets a bit repetitive. But I personally love it because of the combination of the instrumentation and singing. All of the songs I like from The B-52's have strong memories attached to them even though I'm only 25. I think it makes the songs better.
No! Lmfao

It was their first big hit and “announced” all they loved: ‘60s girl groups bouffants beach blanket movies😆 sci-fi B-movies, dance parties, silly fun … 😉
Aye I maybe only used a Jukebox once or twice before they became extinct around here. Always a lot of fun to find a favourite older song on them.
10 cents a song when they started out I think.
@coachtomas they still have them in the bars in Beloit, WI
When we were in the Air Force in 1980, stationed in Omaha Nebraska, my husband and friends would play The Bunny Hop, a really old song, over and over until they finally took it out, lol
Always gets everyone on the dance floor! You can’t help but move! Such a joyful vibe too😽🎶
Don’t forget to check out their Rock Lobster.
That would blow his mind I think - in a good way !

And Private Idaho, Planet Claire, 52 Girls, Give Me Back My Man, Roam, Mesopotamia, Summer of Love! ❤️
Yes it was a HUGE party hit, this was out just before New Years, you heard it everywhere!
But I would recommend pushing aside your questions and just enjoy
You can't help but dance to this groove
When this album first came out, I was playing it and my 5yo son came running into the room and said “WHAT is this?! It MAKES me dance!”
😃 😆 ♥️
RuPaul is having a blast in this video.
This is one of the best good times songs.
Tips were good that night!lol
This song brings back fond memories of my 20’s!
Thanks for posting and I found you just by chance!❤️
I’m now 62 now, and can’t even imagine doing these things now!lol
The B-52's were very big in the new wave/alternative scene and finally broke through to mainstream with Love Shack. If you want to hear more, try Rock Lobster, Planet Claire, Cake, Roam, Legal Tender, Mesopotamia, there are so many more!
Back in my day we had nightclubs with live music all over my hometown, miss it so much 💯💯
We need more love shacks!
Shon, you would've fit right into the 80s, you'd have loved it! I was in high school & college through the 80s & it was just how it looks in these videos. We had so much fun, the atmosphere was fun, the vibe...it was so great. Glad you liked this song, great reaction!
" folks lining up outside , just to get down" one of greatest lines in pop song history
I MISS DANCING
AND
DANCE MUSIC
💃🕺💃🕺💃
LOVE SHACK BABY 🤗 😍 🤗
Such a feelgood banger of a song 🎵
THE PERSON IN WHITE WITH THE BIG FRO IS RUPAUL!
This was RuPaul's first national exposure to the nation!❤
omg you get me so into the songs. I was able to hear these songs a love them the first time round.
They still have digital jukeboxes in bars these days. The cash ones worked the same way. Except instead of paying through an app you had to walk up to the machine & feed dollar bills into it (like a vending machine). Then you pick your songs & you're in a queue behind anybody that already paid for & picked songs before you.
It's such a feel good song. It just makes you happy and gets you moving. It makes you want to sing along and dance. I love songs that do that to you.
Listen to "Roam" by the B-52s.
In the 1980's we used to dance in the bay window of a downtown Albany club. We didn't care who was looking. We just had fun!
All of us knew you were going to love this song. It's a kind of, "meant to be for you" song. We can all see you at this Love Shack. HotTin Rusted!
Thank you for making me smile today! Love your enthusiasm for the music!
Gotta recognize RuPaul's first TV appearance. He's a dancer in this 1989 classic.
Looooooovvvvveeeee this. A true dancefloor filler. I remember when it came out, it was incredible. Everybody loved it. A banger. ❤
Tin roof rusted is southern slang for getting pregnant
I'm from the south and have never heard it but that is not what it meant in this song. It implied that the roof of The Love Shack had a rusted roof. The lady that sings that says that part came to her all of a sudden as she was thinking of what the building might look like.
That doesn't make sense. He directly asks her, "You're WHAT??!!" In obvious disbelief.@@eddielane9569
I never knew that!
Love, baby, that's where it's at.
it's a good thing I closed the windows before I watched your reaction. At one point you were lamenting the loss of "Love Shacks" and I began laughing out loud and kept laughing for some time. You, Sir are a genuine hoot. Thanks for the smiles.
This is just fun. Good memories.
i'm so glad you younger cats are finally looking at stuff from the older days. i was raised (90s) on stuff all the way back to the thirties, so now i have a very wide spectrum of interests and i can get real enjoyment out of just about every era of movies and music.
I LOVE your reaction to Love Shack! This was a shorter version, but not by much. Those ladies are Kate Pierson (red hair) and Cindy Wilson (blonde hair.) You have to go back and listen to "Rock Lobster," so much fun! Cindy has a lead vocal in "Give Me Back My Man." The B-52s and R.E.M. are both from Athens, GA, and Kate songs on R.E.M.'s song "Shiny Happy People."
Kate + Iggy Pop on "Candy" is also amaaaaazing
Elvis Costello! Watching the detectives!!!!!
His whole Armed Forces album.
I also liked “The Juliet Letters”
Versatile, lol!
Thank you for your platform and attention, our voices TOGETHER are STRONG!!!
