      @@AndreiTupolev Thanks for the update. I'm delighted to hear there are that many still flying. Most of these pre war designs went to the scrap heaps in large numbers after the war ended so not many made it into their dotage or into the hands of collectors. The P-40, if memory serves, was one of the few pre war designs to remain in production throughout the war so maybe that is part of the reason so many are still around.

      The Warhawk was always my favorite WWII fighter. The Mustang,Corsair,and Lightning get a lot of credit,and rightfully so,but in the early days of the war the P-40 was the workhorse fighter,and when flown properly,could hold it's own against any enemy fighter.

    • @donf3877
      @donf3877 2 года назад +1

      @@stevemastnick5034 Tactics made ALL the difference. Chennault realized both the weaknesses of the P-40, and its strengths... as well as those of the Japanese aircraft. He instilled into the Flying Tiger's pilots to NEVER attempt to dogfight one-on-one. And, they were to ALWAYS fly in a lead/wingman formation. The favored tactic was to come down from above in a high speed dive and fly through. Then, if needed, to peel out, gain the altitude advantage again, and dive through for a second or third pass. The Flying Tigers amassed an amazing record. Sadly, the Army Air Corp (Force) and Navy brass took forever to listen to him and change their tactics away from dogfighting. Even the P-38 Lightning's used the tactics Chennault devised. The second best P-38 pilot was shot down... because he tried to dogfight to run up his score, instead of following the rules. Yes, the F6F and F4U and P-38 were better aircraft. However, by the time they arrived in theater... much of the very experienced Japanese pilots had already been taken out by the F4F, P-39, and P-40. And the P-40, and the F4F, were still in production at the end of the war. That says something about their ability to still be useful.

      A bit of a Rodney Dangerfield of WW2 fighters 'Doesn't get enough respect' ;-). America pilots were using this same model type (P-40 B&C's) of aircraft to fight the Japanese in China (with the 'Flying Tigers' as on aircraft's current livery) before the country had declared war on them. At the time (1941) the best land based fighter the USA had to offer against the Japanese and the Germans & Italians (primarily..) in North Africa (flown by British, S. African, Australia & Kiwi pilots) and also used rather extensively by the Russian on the Eastern Front. Though outclassed by other fighter types in subsequent years in the war later models (D'-P's) of the P-40 were produced throughout the conflict (over 13K eventually produced in all models) and proved a capable fighter-bomber to the end. The aircraft also played a very important role as a lead-in trainer for fighter pilots as their first taste flying an aircraft that had guns, could drop bombs plus was a stable and reliable platform meaning a great teaching tool.

    • @aviation4life640
      @aviation4life640 2 года назад +2

      @@NesconProductions, yep, this one is a N model, but painted like the C/Bs used by the Flying Tigers. The ones the Flying Tigers flew were designated “Hawk 81’s”. The Japanese thought they were fighting Chinese pilots flying P-40s. But they were fighting American pilots. They couldn’t release the fact that they were American pilots because Japan was not yet at war with the U.S. Releasing the fact would have probably started World War 2 sooner.

      PS - Though maybe less glamours there were plenty of aces that flew later models with 6 cals. in the wings (D models onward..) as with P-40N's and personally (LoL) wouldn't have given the bird a retro. paint scheme to make it look like an older model (though admittedly does look very nice & fooled me :-P). Little known fact from the TiG Brief (An Air Force publication for O-6 and above) back in the late 70's. I was the enlisted two-stripper publications clerk in personnel, but always read it before taking it up to the Colonel :) The C-47 is the ONLY non-combatant aircraft to be awarded an official "kill". One was flying in the Pacific during WW2, when it was jumped by a Zero. The fighter made pass after pass, until it ran out of ammo. The pilot decided to make a suicide run, and rammed the C-47. The Zero went down... the C-47 lumbered on and landed bent up and shot full of holes. Luckily, there was another C-47 that witnessed the attack. The C-47 that was attacked was awarded an official "kill", and wore it's single rising sun flag under the cockpit's side windows the rest of the war. Sadly, no further information was available as to what happened to it after the war. That is one bird that it would have been worth it to save!!!

    The Bell P-39 Airacobra and Lockheed P-38 Lightning are my favorite single engine and twin engine fighters from that era. The P-39 had its issues, as every fighter does, but just as Chennault used the P-40 to great success against the Japanese by adjusting tactics to fit the plane's strengths and weaknesses, so too did the Russians with the P-39 against the Germans. The British Royal Air Force ordered some of the P-38 Lightnings but for some rather odd reasons they wanted them neutered; ordering them without the superchargers and turbochargers which drastically reduced their abilities, especially at altitude.

    • @wilburfinnigan2142
      @wilburfinnigan2142 2 месяца назад

      johncashwell YOU are wrong !!!! The P38's the brits received only had the TURBOchargers removed, the TURBOcharger feed into the stock mechanical supercharger mounted on all Allison V12's. The US government would NOT allow the new TURBOchargers to be exported to a "foreign" country. What the Brits did request that both engines were right hand engines, both turn the same way, stock P38's had one engine turning right one turning left, it made the plane easier to fly no engine torque to worry about, but Brits only wanted to have to have one type back up engines, that ruined the performance of the P38,.....but as usual the Brits always claim to be right even though Lockheed engineers had already figured out how the plane flew best !! Brits were wrong !!!!
