    My father flew a P-38 F5 reconnaissance over Germany in the European theater of WWII. He was part of the 7th Photo Reconnaissance Unit. He loved the 38 - said it was the best plane ever made! He used to tell me how it’s abilities saved his life many times. In one mission, he was under attack by 5 enemy planes and managed to out-fly them all (remember F5 Reconn had no guns, just cameras) and get away. However, he took a lot of fire and lost one of his engines. He had to make an emergency landing in Sweden where they had never seen a P-38 or it’s “modern technology” before. It made quite a splash in the papers. Today, the yoke of his P-38 is on display at a museum in Sweden. Sadly, my father passed away in 1976, but not before he took me to an air show in Chino, CA., in 1975, where a P-38 was part of the exhibits, and I guess because he was a former 38 pilot, they let my father climb into the cockpit and he took me with him (I was a young boy at the time). I’ll never forget the joy and delight on his face as I saw him seat into that chair. He was one with that P-38! You could just see the memories pouring across his face... My father and that P-38 were like two old deep friends/partners reunited again after so many years. It was incredible and that moment left a lasting impression upon me that I’ve carried my entire life. If you aren’t already a member, and you love the P-38, I invite you to consider joining the National P-38 Association (p38assn.org) as there’s so much to learn and know about the 38!

    That FW-190 definitely is not "D" version. FW-190D is nicknamed Dora or Long-Nose Dora - "Langnasen-Dora". Powerplant for "D" is V12 instead of radial. What you have here is one of A models I think, probably A-5 or A-8.

      Actually it is a modern replica built by Flugwerk, but indeed of the FW 190 A version with radial engine. Since the original BMW 801 D engine was not available anymore, they built the Chinese-Russian Ash-82 radial engine into it, which is very similar in shape, technique and power (also 14 cylinders).

      P51D had excellent range and high altitude speed, but in a 1v1 against a 109G6 with MW50 or a G14, or a 190D9 it was easily outclassed as long as the pilot competency was comparable.

      @@michaelwong4303 yea. The mustang wasn't built as a dedicated air superiority fighter. That was the 109's role. The mustang was made as a long range, high altitude escort fighter that could protect vulnerable bombers. Thats why the P51 has superior engine performance at high altitude

    A very German-centric selection at the top end. I think the Yak-3 should be a lot higher, the Thunderbolt and Me-109 a bit lower. The Spitfire should've been the wonderful Mark XVI rather than the brute Mk XVIII, which barely served as a warbird. As a Brit, I love the Hurricane, but it's ugly and slow and shouldn't be in a list like this, but never mind.

    • @MDzmitry
      @MDzmitry 2 года назад

      Can agree.
      If the list is about "historic value", then the real workhorses like the Hurricane and Yak-9 should've been placed way higher.
      If it was about performance, then there still is debate considering Yak-3 and Spitfire's placement in the list, coming from the comparisons and reports from the pilots (including the germans, look up Helmut Lipfert and his experience facing Yak-3 for the first time).
      I can understand why people obsess with the german fighters (including questionable 262) and why the american fighters are as popular, but there is barely enough real basis for them to get as high.

      I don't agree. The 109 K-4 was the best I think. The Dora 9/11 were not bad, but in turnfight for example or for a very skilled pilot, the 109 was the plane to go with

      Alleswasspassmacht that is certainly not the case but they were up there along with the always overhyped p51 and p47

      Alleswasspassmacht if you’d of had the better planes. The Battle of Britain would of turned out very differently...... 💪👍 I say in jest of course.
      The 109 was a very very capable fighter and the 190 was built like a flying tank!

    This video had two # 2 planes! The Bf 109 and the Me 262 were both called #2. And why was the Hurricane in this and the F4U Corsair wasn't? Most of these planes I agree with but without the Corsair this video is not a valid one to me!
