- The 2019 Thunder Over Michigan airshow featured the largest gathering of F4U Corsairs in decades. Eleven of these rare World War 2 fighters came together for one weekend. This video is a combination of footage from Saturday (all 11 flew) and Sunday (10 flew) and shows scenes from the ramp, the mass start, the simultaneous wing unfold, a mass run-up, lightning takeoffs, formation flybys, individual passes, taxi back, and shut down.
The airshow benefits the Yankee Air Museum, which is based at Willow Run Airport near Detroit, Michigan. Learn more about TOM and YAM at yankeeairmuseum...

Those planes are so fast
If that don't say America nothing does.
I had a post along long time ago right here on YOU TUBE stating that a man was assembling a fleet of these Corsairs. The reason I knew this is because I make certain parts 4 antique aircraft. I had a host of morons telling me they knew total number of these planes that are left in tact totaled less than 10 world wide. Here is the videos that proves those morons mute.
There is no pilot in this world even today that would want a flock of those hornets on their ass...
Fantastic
Approaching 93 (May 18) I’m hardly as sharp as I once was, but I still remember the blessing of flying the F4U off of the Philippine Sea, CVA 47, while in VF 113, (Air Group 11) during the Korean War in 1952.
I was further blessed by being chosen by our squadron skipper to be his wingman after he had tried several of we junior officers to see if we could stay with him.
You might find it interesting to look him up on line. In WW2 he was two short of being a
triple ace. His name was John R Strane.
Obviously combat can get a little hairy at times, especially when you take a 37mm in the
engine area and you see the needle on your cockpit fuel pressure indicator back off to
zero (pucker time). I was blessed in that all that was cut was the static line to the indicator
In the cockpit. The main fuel line was fine, I flew back to the carrier and the excellent
maintenance crew did their thing.
Thank you, sir!
Thank you for your service! I bet that was an amazing experience.
Thank you for sharing that, for what you did, and for being who you are. My father-in-law was a Mustang pilot ETO 354th Fighter Group. He past last year. We miss him. May today and every day be a good day, the best day possible.
Thank you for your service sir!
Thank you for your service, sir!
My father piloted “Whistling Death” from "The Blue Ghost" USS Lexington CV-16.
He loved that plane. In his last days, lying in his bed he was moving his hands oddly.
I asked “What are you doing Dad?
He said “I’m flying the Corsair”
Makes me tearful to think about this.
Damn, made me sheds tears after reading this.
your Dad is a hero.
@@DerekFletcher1 Thanks ! and a gentleman. He was flying a scouting mission to make sure the enemy was not rebuilding bases on a recently captured island. Zooming up the beach about 50 feet high, he saw a few straglers having a campfire on the beach. When they became aware of his F4U, panic set in. Half ran into the jungle, the rest into the water. He said it would have been easy to waste them all with the six Browning M2 .50 cals on board.
Determining they were no threat,(small island that was not going to be occupied) he let them live.. To have shot them to peices would have been murder. I wonder if they told their kids of this? I'd love to meet them.
My Dad also flew Corsairs, he flew -4's in Korea. He passed away 2 months before I retired from the USCG, and it broke my heart...I really wanted him to see me complete my service. I will always remember his office, the art and trinkets he had, and also talking to John Bolt, my Dad's CO at some point, talking to him as a youngster hanging on coat tails at a Marines convention of sorts, hearing about what a shit my Dad was as a young Marine. The folks who flew these are unfortunately going away. cherish the stories, and listen!
@@robertmantell1700 So true. I loved listening to his stories also.
Flying on a training mission six miles off the coast of Molokai, the oil line broke and he had to bail. He swam to the island which was almost all jungle at the time. Other planes pointed the way as he could not see it from the "Drink" as he called the water. Finally made it back to his unit. The commander sat him down and asked "What the hell happened to the plane?"
These days, you're lucky if you see 11, T6 Texans flying together. I had no idea there were this many Corsairs still flying.
TAOFLEDERMAUS And more restored every day!
Lovely too hear the sound of roar piston may. They live on for ever.
I thought all but gone too.
Good they are still around.
I envy them fellers that get to play with our national airlooms.
I don't think anybody knew that many R still flying and in perfect condition... I just heard as of Nov 2020 they found like 20 of em still wrapped in cosmoline rags out on some very remote USA controlled island. I seen pics a buddy of mine took he said it was Tarawa Island. Said when he was there the last of em came out of the cave in nearly whole but in pieces all wrapped in tons of plastic steel bands and oil cloth wrappers. My buddy has never been known to be full I shit either... I DID ASK THE QUESTION SINCE I DEAL WITH THIS VINTAGE HARDWARE MYSELF DID THEY HAVE PLASTIC BACK IN THE 40'S BECAUSE TO MY KNOWLEDGE THEY WERE JUST DEVELOPING THE TECH HERE IN THE USA BACK IN THE 1950 CIRCA. OR IS IT MORE POSSIBLE THE STUFF WAS TENDED TO OVER THE YEARS HENCE HOW THEY AH FOUND THE SHIT.... I AM AWAITING A VIDEO... FROM SOMEONE FROM ANYONE. LT. MATT T. FRACE ALLEGES AT THE LEAST THE USA GOVT. PULLED NO LESS THAN 20 CORSAIR PLANES FROM CAVES ON TARAWA ISLAND. GIVE ME INFO PEOPLE... THE LT. AIN'T MUCH USE AT HIS AGE...
Hi Jeff
I had an uncle who flew a Corsair in both World War 2 and Korea. Had his left thumb shot off by flak during an airstrike in North Korea which ended his flying career. Three-War Marine: WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He loved his Corsairs. Gone now and I still miss him.
Supposedly there's a film in production on Korean War Corsair pilots (incredibly). Hopefully it does them justice. That conflict deserves MUCH more attention.
Amazing. What a fantastic collection of classic warbirds.
To me the Corsair is the most beautiful plane of its era.
As a former Air Force interceptor/fighter/bomber pilot, All I can say is this was awesome. Forget the Angels and T-Birds. The F4U Corsair and P-51 Mustang are the real aircraft to have flown.
Don't forget the P-38 and P-47😊
Love the sound and smell of a reciprocal engine. Nothing like it. ❤😊
The wings all unfolding in unison was amazing to see.
What a beautiful site to see! History in motion!
I was there it was amazing.
The one with the starboard radome (far left) really struggled to get passed 90 degrees at the start lol
And folding together as well.
It was like they were alive.
What a magnificent sight to behold, all them ol war birds flying in formation. I have always loved the sound of those planes, especially the torpedo dives, awesome!! They fly around here at home from time to time. Always a welcome sight and sound.
During WW2, the sight of 11 Corsairs flying in formation would've made the hearts of the enemy skip several beats. Lovely, lovely aircraft!
Still makes mine do the same but for different reasons.
She's a beautiful but deadly fighter plane!!..
The USAF used these in Korea in1950. before the Sabre jet came out.
@@johnbockelie3899 the marines did too, a slower aircraft but this made it suitable for CAS with napalm
They were refered to as "The Whistling Death" durning WW2.
UGH that sound. Absolutely beautiful.
I don't think that many corsairs have flow together in the US since they were retired from US service in the 1950s. To see them in squadron numbers like this is just WOW!
I have to say, the F4U Corsair is my favorite airplane ever made by mankind...PERIOD. I loved that TV show, Ba Ba Black Sheep. The F4U was the star of the show.
My pick for most elegant aircraft design. Just beautiful.
Philip Navin as much as I love these bad boys, most elegant goes to the Mosquito imo.
Philip Navin: Spitfire by a long way
I wholeheartedly agree
The P-38 lightning was nice too, and the f7f tigercat
Spitfire is the most beautiful prop driven aircraft ever built, and deadly. But the F4-U looks sweet, powerful, dangerous and has attitude.
Incredible stuff. “Whistling Death”. Makes you proud to be an American.
Its amazing seeing so many of these planes in perfect shape, flying together in present day. Can you imagine what it was like back in the 40's hundreds of these things buzzing around shooting like crazy.
My dad flew Corsairs in the South Pacific. He told me, he was shot at, shot up and shot down for this country. He loved flying the F4U.
I am sure he is in heaven flying one now. Thanks
I don't know why, but I've always had a deep love for these old WWII planes. They're beautiful and the sound of those engines is like none other. I can't imagine the adrenaline rush you get flying one of these birds. As a kid, I would spend hours building models of these planes. Awesome video! Thanks!
That is my favorite aircraft of all time hands down!
My Granddad was a designer of this beautiful Bird still have all his original drawings and specs! My favorite aircraft of all time my dream would be someday to own one!! Thank You!! excellent video!!
Big Bird wow!! Big ups to your dad!
@@eastwestcoastkid My Granddad was so amazing one of my favorite people. I learned to fly because of him!! Thank You I will probably donate all his work to a museum one day!
Big Bird My dad was a Marine pilot in the Solomon Islands - 2 tours WWII. He sang the praises of the CORSAIR til he passed at 88. Had some good “Pappy” stories too. Used to watch Black Sheep show with his hand on an imaginary stick - still flyin’. Thanks to your Grandad for bringin him home!
Big Bird PLEASE tell me you’re keeping those drawings in a fireproof safe!!! And think about putting them where others can appreciate them - sooner than later. They MAY deserve to be in the Air and Space Museum. If you go, who will know??
Many don’t know about the 5 in 1 landing gear system.this was one of my Grandads contributions all of the sketches drawings are safe I am in the process of meeting w lawyers to make sure all this is preserved for history Thank You for Keeping the love of this Great Bird alive! My life’s dream was to own one at the very least to Fly one. Everyone who I talk with who has absolutely loves this great Bird as much as I do!
Unending thanks to the great sky spirit for not ruining this amazing moment with really horrible music. Those engines are the best music there is.
I was a Navy brat who grew up in the Aviation community long enough ago to have heard the sounds of big-ass radial engined birds (reserve Corsairs, Stoofs, and Spads). That rumble was the sweetest music to my ears. Thank you very much for posting this.
William Henderson That sound to me is the sound of freedom.
Couldn’t have said it better. Grew up on Marine Air Stations. No Stoofs but lots of radials. Each one like a room full of Harley Davidsons.
Thank You. Salute to all the veterans that served, are serving and will serve. May GOD bless you all.
WOW. AWESOME. Grandfather flew these bad boys! Lost his brother in one during Korea. One of my favorites too of course. So happy to see this many functioning still!!!!
My all time favorite fighter... with the Double Wasp Radial , she was a beast... and oh the wonderful sound.. Beautiful plane
I remember the WW2 years vividly as a teenager and seeing huge formations of fighters and bombers. This was a nostalgia vid for me. Brought back many memories. Thanks a heap.
.
How old are you Sir?
As a kid in the 50's, i recall an F4U flying toward me from NAAS Holtville to NAF El Centro. At about 600 feet up. I waved; he waved back....... (Great!)
I grew up in the 80s but, raised by the greatest genation so I always very close to the era.
I listen to so much old time radio I sometimes forget what year it is and how sideways our nation has gone.
Bring baack the ole times.
@@fredfletcher1370 Holtsville. Nice you mention the place.
Oh man, I got the chills just hearing the engines start up and the wings coming down.
the F4U and the P-51 are my absolute favorite both are absolutely amazing
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to see these beautiful Corsair's in flight. as a boy growing up in the '60s my father loved these Corsair's. He served on a destroyer during the Korean War and he saw many Corsair's. They were his favorite World War II fighter.
Black Sheep Squadron Away. All I can say is WOW! The sounds of all those big radials in the air together. My heart is pounding.
The sound of those things gave me wood. Holy dog shit.
What a sight. I love the Corsair. When I was a little boy a neighbour gave me this fantasticly detailed metal model of a Corsair. It was beautiful. Looked just like the one with the chequered details on the nose and tail paintwork. I’ve loved the Corsair ever since. I wish I still had that model plane now. It was a beaut!
So incredible. Big thank you to the guys with the money, to the guys who keep 'em flying, the people who designed them, the guys who flew them and never made it home, to everyone involved.
From Australia - so grateful to the people that keep these awesome aircraft airworthy. Thanks for sharing.
Your air museum has two. And there's one in NZ. All can fly. From an American. Cheers
Thank you so much for this fantastic video!! Thank you too for NO music or sound track!!! We love hearing those fabulous engines!!!
It was really beautiful to see those wings unfold so gracefully!!! Thank you!!
I've NEVER seen so many Corsairs together. Ever!!! Wow! An entire squadron!
Many thanks to the folks that have the passion to spend the big buck$ to maintain and keep these priceless pieces of history flying!
My fellow Marine and flying uncle, Wm. Keilar, served in China as a Senior Crew Chief on Corsairs. He would have honored to witness the extraordinary care these pilots and their crews take with so much history. God Bless Them All.
Donald Reach: What year were the Corsairs in China?
@@hoatattis7283 is there A problem?
Did he fly with my uncle Lt Jerry Taylor
My dad was a rivet inspector on the Corsair during the war and eventually retiring after working 42 years for Vought (LTV). Several stories about those times. My Mom was one of the "Rosie the Riveters" during the war. That is where they met and later got married. Thanks for showing this!
WHAT A STORY - - Thanks to the BOTH of them & thank YOU for your post! >SALUTES!
this is my favorite airplane of the wwII era, not by its sound, but by its design.still looks good today. thanks for this vid
My Dad steamed on the U.S.S. Philippine Sea from 1950 to 1952. He's 93 now and still gets misty-eyed remembering the sound of Corsairs and Skyraiders warming up before a strike against North Korea. The R-2800 was a beast.
How do we say thank you to all the great pilots and crews who served with these great warbirds. Video brought tears to my eyes thinking about the sacrifices these people made.
The most beautiful of our air forces. My favourite planes. My father worked on these planes during the war.
Thanks to the pilots who fly them. Very skilled.
I'm glad I came across this. 10 or 11 Corsairs in the air at once! Awesome, 11 times over! This many at once, sights and sounds not witnessed much since their days in service!
Greatest airplane ever made in my opinion, they are beautiful
Those big radial engines make beautiful music.
What an amazing sight to see. I saw my first corsair on the U.S.S Midway in San Diego. It has been my favorite plane ever since. At a warbird fly-in, I got to speak with a Marine corps veteran who shot down two enemy planes while flying the corsair in the Pacific. I won't ever forget that experience.
This was one of the best weekends of my life, period. Thank you Thunder staff for making it happen. And for the record, Lone Star has the most bad ass sounding Corsair on the planet!
Wonder when was the last time 11 corsairs were seen flying in formation? I'm thankful to these boys for keeping history alive, and very proud and grateful to the boys who fought in these planes heroes one and all.
The sound of those huge Pratt and Whitney engines is so beautiful
Fabulous gathering of one of the most beautiful Warbirds of WW II.....
I was camping at Madras Oregon the night before a total solar eclipse in 2017 and at dusk we were treated to 4 different warbirds returning from Airshows in Canada. A P-38 lightning, P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, and a F4U Corsair performed a military type landing and it was totally awesome because it was also totally unexpected. I'll never forget it.
My, my. What a beautiful sight. Wish my Dad was alive to see this. He flew the 4 model, F4U, at the end of WWII in the MARINE airwing. Beloved these old Warbirds, and the SNJ,(T-6 TEXAN).
This has special place in my heart, as my dad flew one in WW2 and he came back, and had me.
Was there all day Saturday. Loved every moment of the airshow. Quite the treat to see them start up in unison in person as well as the low fly-by formations! Corsair crazy indeed!
My late Dad USMC served in VMF-121,had a rough bout of malaria during his time in the Pacific.Always thought so highly of Joe Foss The Flying Marine.Worked on R2800 as a mechanic.
Still have that book,a true treasure.
My favorite out of all of them is the F4U-5N, something about that radar and the other mods make it seem remarkable, special even.
WOW! That many radials at once is a treat. Thanks to all who made that possible
ALL I CAN SAY IS "WOW!" 10 CORSAIRS FLYING AT WONCE. GREAT AIRSHOW!
My Grandmother helped build these during the war. This is a great video. Thanks for sharing.
They have 13 Corsairs already confirmed coming to EAA AirVenture 2023!
Next to the P-51 the Corsair is my all time favorite and to see this video was incredible. What a beautiful airplane. To the men that flew these beautiful birds I salute you, and I cant thank you enough for what you did for our country.
The sound of 20,000+ horsepower starting up! Pretty impressive, and the flyby's were just a complete eargasm!😁👍👍
84 years later and still flying. A testament to a truly magnificent cast.
Was a plane captain on U-Birds 1952-53. USMC VMA 334
Wonderful sound of those powerful engines
Warmed up 2 every morning
No mickey Mouse ears
Great memories
I bet that quite a different era.... I felt old, having worked on A7 Corsairs... 52 - 53 whew... Where was 334 out of?

Thank you for your service Captain!
Would've been definitely something I wouldn't mind to wake up to in the morning. Usually however I get go hear the CH-53 and the occasional V22 Osprey which is pretty cool too I guess!
I was born in Bridgeport, Ct. and remember going to the plant in Stratford, Ct. where they were built, and pilots were trained. This video brought back so many memories. Thank you.
I'm glad to see that many are airworthy! I wish there was about 100 more.
Wikipedia lists 36 airworthy, worldwide, with another 15 being restored to airworthy shape. Not sure how accurate their list is, but can you imagine 51 Corsairs together in one spot?
@@markpowell3657 I'm not sure I could handle it; but would be willing to pay big $ to see it anyway!
F4U Corsair. " Whistling Death".
WW2 produced the most beautiful planes on all.fronts. Deadly works of art. Keep em Flying !!!!.

Same here....🥰
The Corsair is a beautiful aircraft. I love the gull wings. And they sound nice too. Absolutely stunning
Nice video. I loved all the years I spent with my Dad and older brother going to the many summer air shows in Southern California.
I fly an rc corsair and can easily say it's my favorite plane. Beautiful aircraft
Love the sound of a radial .
Forward air control team, whip antenna on my back, aircraft made a run at our position, I counted the rivets on the fuselage as he removed the top two sections on my antenna.
Great pilots, they made the difference in the war.
That's great marksmanship !! Unless he was aiming for your nose ?
I used to work on the Blue Max Corsair back in the late 70's and early 80's. What a phenomenal aircraft! I was only in my teens back then, but I remember it like it was yesterday
Thank you for using the proper shutter speed!
I love these " Grand Old Ladies of the Skies . Thank you . Our aviation history , World War Two . Once again ,thank you to all who flew these machines , Wings of Victory ... Thank you .
The Corsair Damn sexiest looking US warbird ever made, followed by one of the next "form and function". I see them like a C2 Corvette stingray split window just look like going 300mph just sitting there, they'll always be awesome to me🤩👌
Gimme a Corsair any fucking day
LOVE the fact we still have them flying , what an achievment....!!!
That looks like a full mission, I can't help but think of Pappy Boyington. Met him several years before he died
I met him at one of the Yankee Air Museum airshows. Used to be a member, helped with crowd control one year. I miss going out there.
A real honor, and a true hero.
Met Pappy at OshKosh years ago and got his book. A few weeks later I ran into Joe Foss and got him to autograph a book about him published in 1943. Very nice gent and so down to earth. Joe flew Wildcats in Guadalcanal Canal but later flew Corsairs in mostly ground-air missions. Sadly, they've left the formation like so many of their comrades.
It’s just amazing to me that they were building and flying a plane this powerful and complex after only what. 35 or 40 years after the Wright brothers first flight. Just beautiful!! This is just one part of an awakened giant. Thanks for the video.
Met Pappy In 1981 And Got His Autobiography Autographed With A Polaroid Picture To Prove It! Also Climbed On The Wing Of The Restored Corsair That Was Kept At. MCAS EL TORO. My Dad Was Stationed There.
Spettacolo bellissimo, mai visti prima d'ora tanti splendidi Corsair a terra e in volo!

My all time favorite aircraft. OMG, used to build plastic models as a kid of the Corsair. Thank You for this video
This plane has been my favorite from childhood. It's so beautiful and so intimidating. Love it!!!! Its got " I will mess you up written all over it" !!!!
If only someone got a couple F9F Panthers flying again, one of the most beautiful jet aircraft ever made along with the Sabre. The Korean War truly was the golden age of aircraft designs (at least from an aesthetic perspective). Corsairs, Panthers, Sabres, Shooting Stars and yes, Mustangs at least in the early days of the conflict (with B-29s making a dramatic return as the bombers).
I MUST show this to my Dad. He was a Corsair mechanic and imparted love of these magnificent planes to me. I didn't know they had that many left flying. They filmed Baa Baa Black Sheep with only 6 Corsairs.
This was a little slice of heaven. Thank you.
The Corsair looks and sounds incredibly intimidating. What a stunning warbird!
Awesome video. Nothing less than a miracle to get that many F-4U's together.
This just made this old man's day, I hope to see more video's like this.
Right around 25:40 - That shot of 10 Corsairs going away. Incredible!
goosebumps!
O.M.G. - - THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS! 😁
My Grandpa taught me about 95% of what I know about space & flight. Though I just turned 50 - - I can still smile, feeling as if I was that wee lad with him by my side @ Kirtland A.F.B. (Albq., NM) during the Air Shows he would take our whole Famn-Damily to!
As a kid, one of my FAVE all-time shows (to this day) was The Black Sheep Squadron & Robert Conrad as the legendary "Pappy". 👍 Right now I just got a little misty eyed when the beautiful Stars 'n' Stripes went up on those wings, as they were retracted for Carrier maneuvers - - what a sight they must have been on ANY of our wonderful Flat-Tops! 😎
Fast forward to '96, I bought a '95 Chevy CORSAIR & everytime I saw that name on my trunk, I'd chuckle to myself & think "Oh how I wish it were the PLANE.". Now I have a '16 Challenger & it's my mission to own a HELLCAT (God willing, I'd be able to say, I had a Corsair & a Hellcat but they were real Demons to get off the ground).
To make a "short story long", my FAVE aircraft is #1) SR-71 Blackbird; 2nd) the F4U Corsair & then tied for 3rd) - - the awesome F/A-18 Hornet & the F-16 Fighting Falcon. (Reason for them: I salute & would love to see the Navy Blue Angels for my 1st time & the Air Force Thunderbirds HAVE ALWAYS delighted my Family & I.)
Just to shake the hand of any of the pilots & maybe touch any one of those unbelievable aircraft - - I would die a happy man.
People - - give a little salute to all of our boys & girls who became women & men behind the stick. As they are the Angels on high, so often providing needed support to our men & women on the ground!!! God bless these United States & everyone who's contributed to it's SUCCESS!
That's something you don't see every day or even at most airshows. Awesome! !!
Hard to comment. The video is so moving. It's very emotional to see these awesome planes flying again. Hopefully, people will continue to restore them & fly them.
Thanks for showing such a magnificent display of F4U Corsairs, one of my favourite aircraft not often seen in Australia.
This is one of the moments where I wish i saw it in real life, what a sight! 11 corsairs is just fenomenal
I can't imagine what it is like to push the throttle forward on an R2800. Man this is impressive!
On takeoff, you don't. there's so much torque and P-F that you ease the throttle up- notice how they didn't blast off? Also needs a lot of rudder to hold it. But, yeah, i share that thought. 150 to 400 in zap time?
Man, what a sight and sound !!! I wish I could have been there. It's amazing how beautiful and sleek WW2 planes were, and how dumpy and even ugly cars were in the same era. Thanks so much for the vid.
WOW!!! This gives me chills. Thank you so much for taking the time and sharing this history with us.
Corsair never die ! one of the most beautiful propeller plane ever made ! thanks for this great moment...What sound !! take care ; )
