    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky's (Sylvester Stallone) intense training pays off as he ascends the steps and overlooks the City of Brotherly Love.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once-promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the Bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only Cinderella involved here: writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of 35 that he'd written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity -- just like Rocky's million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

    Cast: Burgess Meredith, Sylvester Stallone

It's a really cool situation they had. They probably didn't reserve that location, so when you see all those people turning to look at Rocky, they were probably looking at the film crew. It was a smart move that added to the momentum the montage was building for Rocky.

Fun Fact: Most of the scenes of Rocky jogging through Philadelphia were shot guerrilla-style, with no permits, no equipment, and no extras. The shot where he runs past the moored boat for example, the crew were simply driving by the docks, and John G. Avildsen saw the boat, and thought it would make a good visual, so he had Sylvester Stallone simply get out of the van and run along the quays, while Avildsen himself filmed from the side door. A similar story concerns the famous shot of Rocky jogging through the food market. As he runs, the stall keepers and the people on the sidewalks can clearly be seen looking at him in bemusement. While this works in the context of the film to suggest they're looking at Rocky, in reality, they had no idea why this man was running up and down the road being filmed from a van. During this scene, the famous shot where the stall owner throws Rocky an orange was completely improvised by the stall owner, who had no idea that a movie was being filmed and that he would be in it.

If you look at the locations that Rocky is running in Philly, he goes from the industrial rail yards, thru the Italian market, to the canal, to the docks, and then winds back around to the Museum of Art. That's like 10 miles total distance. Pretty damn good ,especially when he starts sprinting at the end and powers up those steps.

Coming from absolute poverty with a pregnant wife to feed, he banked on himself to make a living at a time when no one believed in him. people say that this role ensured that he was famous for the next 20 years and he didn't do anything worthy after this, but that's not the point is it ? every human beings dream in life is to live it with pride and be able to support his family, and that's what this man did , despite the fact that he was laughed at all his life. so let me get this straight; Rocky isn't just a movie about a man who defies all odds, to become heavy weight champion of the world, it is a metaphor of how Stallone went from being a child in foster care, a homeless young man, sleeping in a bus shelter, writing a story (Rocky), and holding onto that story, despite all temptation, and starring in it, to being the highest paid actor in Hollywood...one, is metaphorical to illustrate it in every man's imagination, the other is a real life story. that is why Stallone is the most humble of Hollywood actors...strange, but true.

I still remember every moment of it, from the trumpets over the moving word "Rocky" at the film's opening to Rocky's beaten-up face freezing in motion at the end. The movie itself was an unknown contender then, and it knocked out in surprise everyone who saw it, and still keeps knocking people down while lifting them up at the same time.

The speed-up to the sprint from 1:45 to 2:00 still gives me full-body goosebumps every time! Climbing up the steps of the art museum does as well, sure, but I feel like the speed-up shot doesn't get enough attention by comparison. Also, in the push-up shots, it's probably because your eye is naturally drawn to Sylvester in the middle of the shot and his impressive feats of athleticism, but I'd never noticed before that you can see Mickey and his assistant (on the other side of Rocky) actually counting the push-ups as they lean on the ropes.
Fun Fact: the scene after this, Rocky's "Go the Distance" monologue in bed with Adrienne, was almost cut from the shooting schedule altogether. It was the last scene to be filmed, they were running out of time and money, and only after begging, bargaining, and very nearly threatening was Sly granted a single take to get the whole scene exactly right. So no pressure or anything!

He must have known it would work because he could see himself in the role, could imagine the conviction he's bringing to it, and I can't think of another actor who could quite have pulled off this performance. There's that exhilarating moment when Stallone, in training, runs up the steps of Philadelphia's art museum, leaps into the air, shakes his fist at the city, and you know he's sending a message to the whole movie industry." - Ebert

I love the Rocky series because in many ways, they are a mirror held up to Stallone's life. This first movie, he's an underdog, unknown...on the way up thanks to a bit of a miracle (Rocky was never expected to be the hit it was). We see this same scene basically in Rocky II, only now, he's a star and the same people are cheering for him and know who he is. By Rocky III, he's on top of the world, a true A-list star having did other solid movies like Nighthawks and having just filmed First Blood. The excess of the fame is starting to kick in, from his altered appearance (from getting ripped partly, but also from obvious plastic surgery...which Paulie even slyly alludes to in saying 'you got your face fixed up'). Rocky IV is just excessive and huge budget but the heart of the movie is gone, even though we love the futuristic soundtrack and the unrealistic but awesome Drago fight. By Rocky V, he's down from a series of flops and the star appears to have dulled. And then Rocky Balboa was this unlikely resurrection at an advanced age of his action career. The Expendables, Rambo, and Rocky Balboa were all hits fairly well received proving age can be just a number. It was incredible to see his path and the way he was self-aware enough to mirror it with this indelible character.

Yeah, I feel like that dolly shot where he goes from jogging to sprinting in front of the famous windjammer Moshulu, docked at Penn’s Landing, is one of the more iconic shots in modern cinema, and I’m not even necessarily a huge Stallone or Rocky fan.

As a Polish immigrant from the 1980s, I can’t help but get emotional when Stallone raises his arms as the camera overlooks the city of Philadelphia. I microcosm of the American Dream. Politics be damned.. this country is more important. This is as classic a film as you will ever see. A Rocky film poster hangs on the wall in my house.
This film captured Philly.. but it also captured a grimy street level life that could have taken place in any city. Absolutely one of my favorite films ever made. Pozdrawiam!

Something about the whole shot (at the top of the stairs) is just so mesmerizingly beautiful, and something I think you can only capture in film (not digital... *real* cameras). You can feel the cold in the air, see the fog over the city, and just experience that lived-in, real feel of that moment in the city. It's just Rocky alone up there saying, "This is where I am... this is who I am... one person here in my little section of the world in my slice of the human story on this earth." No phones or screens or earbuds... no electronics but the dim lights and the distant cars. Just a man and the world. It makes me feel proud and thrilled to be alive.
If aliens or future historians needed to watch a handful of movies to get a snapshot of humanity in the twentieth century, Rocky would be one of them.

In 1975 an inventor named Garrett Brown developed a new movie camera that allowed a smooth shot to be filmed by a moving person. Garrett filmed several demonstration clips with his "Steadicam" to show to movie production companies to sell them on what his camera could do. His clips made the rounds in Hollywood and many big name directors and production companies were excited over the prospects of the new invention.
A few months later, in the early days of preparation for the production of "Rocky", director John G Avildsen was shown Garrett's clips and offered the chance to use the Steadicam in the movie. One of the demonstration clips in particular that caught Avildsen's eye was a clip of Garrett Brown's girlfriend running up and down the steps at the Philadelphia Art Museum. The first words out of Avildsen's mouth was "where are those steps?" Stallone's original script was revised to change the location from NYC to Philadelphia and to include the shots at the Art Museum steps and Garrett Brown was the cameraman that shot the scene of Stallone running up the steps.

The more I look at, even though Rocky didn’t win, he went all 15 rounds. An underdog, out of shape leg breaker went blow for blow with the heavyweight champ. And I realized this movie is less about finding that ultimate victory, but more about the smaller wins you get. He goes from zero to hero in this film through all the smaller victories, and it taught me to trust in the process.
