CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) gives Champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) his first knock down with one good punch.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone), a Philadelphia boxer, is but one step removed from total bum-hood. A once-promising pugilist, Rocky is now taking nickel-and-dime bouts and running strongarm errands for local loan sharks to survive. Even his supportive trainer, Mickey (Burgess Meredith), has given up on Rocky. All this changes thanks to Muhammad Ali-like super-boxer Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers). With the Bicentennial celebration coming up, Creed must find a "Cinderella" opponent for the big July 4th bout -- some unknown whom Creed can "glorify" for a few minutes before knocking him cold. Rocky Balboa was not the only Cinderella involved here: writer/director Sylvester Stallone, himself a virtual unknown, managed to sell his Rocky script (one of 35 that he'd written over the years) on the proviso that he be given the starring role. Since the film was to be made on a shoestring and marketed on a low-level basis, the risk factor to United Artists was small. For Stallone, this was a make-or-break opportunity -- just like Rocky's million-to-one shot with Apollo Creed. Costing under a million dollars, Rocky managed to register with audiences everywhere, earning back 60 times its cost. The film won several Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

The people in the bar’s reaction makes the scene. Imagine being at the hometown bar with all your friends and watching one of your buddies knock down Mayweather. So cool.
you mean knockdown Ali.. mayweather is a chump
KrushKrills I said Mayweather to be more relevant today.
And I’m not a Mayweather fan either dude but 50-0 is 50-0.
He is a featherweight no one cares
Evan Faust lol i saw Nate Diaz choke out mcgregor In our hometown Buffalo Wild Wings even though I never met Nate Diaz it was that hometown pride.
This was a true black vs white moment
1:47 "It looks like Rocky is blocking the blows with his face."
Announcer guy caught on to Rocky's career strategy pretty quickly.
Perceptive
Nater K he’s got a cast iron chin
Kinda like fousey
Lol! 😅
"Ha! Face to Fist style, how you like it?"
Can we take a moment to appreciate Carl Weather's footwork? He was in tremendous shape for this role.
he played pro football...... weathers was a top fleet athlete and still a young man. perfect pick for the role. underrated actor.
An excellent pick to play Apollo Creed.
Carl Weathers is a true American Icon
That moment when the Bartender throws the towel in delight when Creed gets floored...

The look on Creed's face when he gets up says it all.

But he won...
But he didn’t beat the man
RossMonster He was like "Wtf just happened?"

I don't think I've ever seen a man as patriotic as Apollo Creed.
MAYBE Steve Rogers.
General Guile Who was portrayed by JCVD in the live action film? Not too patriotic imo

The Media put your hands up did the same to Drago
What makes that scene is the brilliant acting by Carl Weathers . His look when he gets up is priceless .
Carl Weathers is a criminally underrated actor! The Rocky series, Predator, The Mandalorian, he's amazing in all of them!
I've said many times that the job Weathers did in the first two movies was as good as Stallone. For as much as Stallone WAS Rocky, Weathers WAS Creed.
@@Elthenar yep. You know they nailed it when you can't imagine anyone else in the role.
his reaction was so real, i felt his disbelief
@@Goldenbane Dont forget he has comedy range. Happy Gilmore wouldn't have been what it was without Chubbs. Weathers is a fantastic actor, criminally underrated indeed.
If Rocky would have kept his ass in the corner and let the ref count then he might have won
I don't think Rocky was really focused about winning, especially not in a first round knockdown. He wanted to prove to himself that he could go the distance, and he wanted the Champ at his best, not in clown mode
naw, doesn't work that way. There's another ref on the outside of the ring called "the counter". His job is to start the count when the knockdown occurs, the ref inside the ring moves the other fighter to a neutral corner and when he turns hi attention to the down fighter, he looks to "the counter" to pick up the count already in progress. You can see it on the screen, the film is very accurate.
The ref picks up the count from the time keeper.
@@k1productions87 The moment Apollo got knocked down, it got real fast. He should have listened harder to Duke. Same mistake against Drago too.
Gotta love how people argue about it like it was real. That's how good these movies were....
I love how Rocky just looks like he's happy just to be here.
It shows being humble can take you a long way at times
@@secretsean562 You can even see him clapping as best he can in gloves as Creed gets introduced.
@Jesus Pernia that's make sense, and remembered me shounen protagonists
@@guyonbench its kinda adorable lol
Because he is. Lol. Just wants to go the distance.
Carl Weathers got screwed. He should have gotten nominated for an Oscar. His physical acting is so no appreciated in this movie.
I would of said in ROCKY 2 more than ROCKY 1 personally.
@@_el_boyntoYeah, his acting shined more in Rocky 2.
That was a STRONG year for acting…hell, for MOVIES.
one of my favorite parts is when they simply announce Rocky's name and the bar cheers and the bartender goes "You did it, man!" it really drives the theme of the movie home. even they thought he "made it" simply by being there. just some "bum" from Philly, but he goes toe-to-toe with Creed and even knocks him down.
Not only that he took him the distance and began his legacy elite movie series this
Rocky is such a gritty, heartwarming and inspirational film,...the greatness of it ,...is not in the boxing scenes,..but the real heart and soul it possesses in dealing with real human issues.....it's a masterpiece
Beautifully said! That sums it up perfectly 👍
well said
Creed was actually down for more than 10 seconds, and rocky probably would have won if the ref wasn't occupied with stopping him from jumping about lmfao
Jordan Aaron Smith read boxing rules. It's called the long count. The count starts when you go back into your corner. It costed jack Dempsey a fight nearly 100 years ago
Tony Fontaine that was exactly his point. Read his comment properly.
It's a common thing in sports-movies. There are quite a lot of basketball movies where everything is riding on the last shot. 3 seconds on the clock. The star of the movie dribbles for 20 seconds and make a move like to throw. The camera shifts to the clock - 2 seconds left, He throws the ball - it's flying through the air in slow motion, but at normal speed it would take 3-4 seconds to hit the basket. The ball goes in and the camera shifts to the clock that is just counting down to 0. 3 seconds that were closer to 30.
@@TonyFontaine1988 the count starts after the referee signals a knockdown. There's is an official at the judge's table that begins the count after which the referee picks it up.
2:50, Apollo's face says it all. "This wasn't suppose to happen."
Michael Tardi I prefer to think of it as the “Am I sure I thought this thing through” look. Not to be confused with the “I screwed up” look. Both very similar.
Would've been funny if he got knocked out right there lol
He did, ref just fucked it up by waiting 10 seconds before counting
Ztornado Taken from history, too. Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney I think it was.
The blacks don't wanna talk about it
@@roberttaylor9296 The count doesn't start until the other fighter goes back to his corner. Rocky couldn't believe his eyes - he was so stunned and excitied that he'd knocked down the champ that he didn't think to go to his corner even with everyone yelling at him to go back there.
It would have been a miracle if you had been able to speak English well.
"I don't want you messing with southpaws. They do everything backward," what Duke told Apollo when Apollo chose Rocky and they described him and his boxing style. And there you go. Apollo was not expecting that left hand. Caught him by surprise.
Duke watching the news report on Rocky's training (in the meat factory)
Duke: "Hey champ, I think you better come over here and check out this boy you'll be fighting. I think he means business."
Apollo: "Yeah yeah, I mean business too."
Duke grimaces when the reporter holds up Rocky's bloody fist after he finishes the demonstration.
"Nah, nah, southpaw nothin'."
"Yeah, I mean business too."
Apollo had me rolling in those moments. You already knew it was coming.
Mick said to Rocky in Rocky 2, they ought to outlaw southpaws.
Just picture the mental boost it must've given Rocky if he knew the bar he used to frequent was packed, watching, and cheering him right the fuck on when he landed a knockdown blow! IN THE FIRST ROUND!
wepner knocked down ali...with a body shot. try to do that, rock

The bar scene is so beauTIFUL. It really brings the movie vision all together. Seeing the bar tender say "you did it" and them being so happy from the first round knockdown, it warms your heart to see them rallying behind Rocko.
Carl Weathers' facial expressions are absolutely outstanding in this film. The face he makes here, and the famous face he makes when Rocky gets up before the last round are priceless. Both add so much value to the scenes within a second.
0:17 I wonder if that was the same bar as from Rocky 5's final fight????//
It is.
Even Spider appears in Rocky 5
And in Rocky Balboa. He even talks to the towel throwing bar owner who tore a quad jumping in the first film and ended up in a wheelchair 30 years later.

I still remdmber how the whole theater screamed when Rocky knocked him down!
You lucky stiff.

1:58 the flashback in Creed
Yeeee
What flashback?
@@jasonwayne2833 When Creed goes down and has a flashback of his dad
I remember watching this in the theater when it came out all those years ago and this moment was electrifying.
I remember it, too. I was a kid. My dad said, "We're going to see a movie about a down-and-out boxer." My younger brother and I groaned. Uggh. NO. But ten minutes into the movie I was mesmerized by the characters. The whole long buildup to the fight is brilliant because Rocky's life seems so sad and grim even though he's a completely lovable person, and the film lulls you into thinking it's a gritty story about a person from the streets and not the setup for a mythic fairytale. Then the training montage scene got us pumped up and rooting for him, but we still didn't really think he had a chance AT ALL, especially when he confesses his fear the night before to Adrian and tells her he just hopes he can still be standing at the end. And then when this scene happened ... OMG ... I was SCREAMING like I was at a real fight. I mean, I lost my mind! I was delirious. And fully grown adults in the audience were pumping their fists at the screen and cheering!! It was one of the most thrilling moviegoing experiences I've EVER experienced in my life, definitely in the top three. Yes, you're right, the word is E-L-E-C-T-R-I-F-Y-I-N-G. To create that fantasy and make it feel real -- the movie fully earned the Oscar for Best Picture in a year of great films.
Good knock out.. Surprised creed got up on that 15 count 😂 !!
Al Neri the Godfather,Al Neri is amazing👏another amazing performance by him is in witness to the mob
Rest in peace Carl
This scene was so nicely shot you almost can’t tell there’s only about 50 people in the stadium
Lol, now they film it i between actual events, like Jake Gylenhaal doing that UFC movie during an event.
That was a ten count. Your new heavyweight champion Rocky Balboa
Aparrently, the "long count" starts when the other fighter gets in his corner.
Balboa was stupid. Stupidity ruined his KO victory
@@elchichosantana6410 But this match would have been short though.
Creed’s face at the end, wow. Looks like his whole world was just shattered when he realized he finally found a man on the same level as him.
"He doesn't know it's a show. He thinks it's a damn fight!"
Apollo practically treated this exhibition as a show while Rocky was serious from the start.
@@kentinson1670 well after that final round it shows Apollo was pissed off
@@lexkanyima2195 I love that shot at the end. Apollo completely outclassed Rocky in almost every way but Rocky would not stay down. Rocky was determined to survive while Apollo wanted to get the fight over with.
Damn Jake Paul vs. Nate Robinson looking real intense
Duke: It’s not an exhibition for for him, he thinks it’s a damn fight!
Exactly
Southpaw , nothin ill drop him in 3
I'm just gonna say it. After Rocky, Duke is my favorite character! Every thing he says is pure gold! Great character!
“He doesn’t know its a damn show. He thinks it’s a damn fight. Finish this bum, and let’s go home”*
Stallone. Pure genius. He did this entire fight in reverse. No one could do this. Cheap and beyond effective. Stallone is the best
Rocky knocked Creed down with the very first punch he landed.
I always liked Carl Weathers. A really fine actor. His role as Apollo Creed was priceless. Great facial expressions and great lines. Sounds like a damn monster movie. LOL
And the "more coffee Shirley?" remark. Lol
2:24 Rocky (technically) knocked Apollo out in one punch
When you know how to punch...one punch is all you need..
Not technically ........physically🤣
The thing I love about rocky is that he is humble. No other fighter would have tried to clap for his opponent while he was being announced
The first Rocky is not just a movie about boxing. It's a movie about lessons about life. The message is that no matter how bad your life is, if you don't give up on something, maybe it will pay off, or maybe you can accomplish something.
No its not.
Apollo overestimated himself and underestimated Rocky!!!
its called being cocky
Rocky was unexpected badass!
@@jrewing1512 preach lol
apollo was not "cocky" he's a true champion at heart, i recommend watching the movie again and try to really listen to him, he went out perfectly
Even Rocky underestimated himself!
He doesn't know it's a damn show - he thinks it's a damn fight.
2:25 one of my favourite punches in rocky franchise
The energy of the fight before and after Apollo got knocked down is night and day.
An exhilarating scene
18 seconds actually passes by before the ref counts.
My goal is to one day have a fight that's played at the bar i used to work at kind of like the one in this scene. Hopefully my old coworkers and patrons will have the same reaction when I win.
0:13 I loved how modest Rocky was on the big stage in the first two movies, like a regular everyday man who had that big, one in a million chance!!!!
God I love this movie and I was very impressed with creed and I'm happy it's carrying the franchise
I love how embarrassed Apollo looks at 2:48 after that surprise knockdown. It took one knockdown for him to get serious after his trainer told warned him several times to not underestimate Rocky.
1:06 I love how he smiles knowing that he's going fight this guy
creed is a legend too. That look though after he gets up from being knocked down...:)
Ref should have called it right there. Tko
Carl Weathers as Apollo Creed is an all-time great casting
At 2:11you can see creeds fake punch
2:24 When Jake paul punches Nate robinson.
Is it me or does rocky uses he’s head to defend???
Rocky is the villain here. Apollo just wanted to give this poor fighter the chance to put on a good show and then he goes and knocks Apollo down like it's some sort of serious fight.
2:24 of naughty uppercut from rocky
They should have shown Mickey, the one who knew Rocky's potential all along as the commentator said "this is the first time the champ has ever been knocked down".
If Rocky had gone straight to his corner, he would have won in the first round 😂
Balboa was stupid. His stupidity ruined his KO victory.
Apollo would have lost respect everywhere if Rocky won in the first round
@@elchichosantana6410 He didn't plan to win and it wouldn't have been a real winning because Apollo was just messing around for the show.
Ahh yes the most successful boxing technique in history. Absorb every blow with your face

Vegeta Solo I am from the future, and here to inform you that it is happening!
Vegeta Solo spoke it into existence
Vegeta Solo I thought of that way before your comment.
Thought of it at year 2007 lol bet you didn't thought of it before then lol
Rocky probably is a middle weight at best
he was a middle weight in the first movie
mild heavy weight by the second movie
full on heavyweight in the first fight in 3 and back to mild heavyweight in the second
rocky 4 was when rocky was in his heavyweight prime.
Michael Kean
Rocky has never been a Middleweight. In the above clip his weight is billed as 190lb, that's Heavyweight as of 1976, even today that would be Cruiserweight, 3 classes above Middleweight.
Its a movie....
This is why it's important to have a MANAGER!
Creed was down for 21 seconds....are we sure he was a good fighter lol?I know Rocky has main character power but how did he hit that hard?
I think it was the extra force you see Rocky jumped and he swung his left arm that's why he was able to hit so Hard
If Chuck Norris stepped in the ring they both would have ran.
Until Bruce Lee would drop kick chuck Norris
Apollo should've been counted out in the first round. The moment Apollo went down I counted at least 15 seconds but then again ot wouldn't be much of a movie. But all in all this movie is a definite classic....
Never count out a southpaw
Probably the fakest fight in the entire movie history
What is being said at the 2:19 mark 😂 sounds like some Willy Wonka Giberish. 😂
If Rocky would've stepped back right away the ref would've counted 10 easily but Rocky kept coming over and the ref had to keep holding him back. Fight over Rocky wins. 😂
Apollo had that WTF just happened look when he got back on his feet lol
If you count it, Apollo stayed down for 23 secs which means Rocky actually knocked him down hard!
His overconfidence was his weakness
Get it?
The guy in the bar wearing the beanie looks just like Charlie in Its always sunny in Philadelphia, that can’t be a coincidence.
At least Apollo didn’t say his costume weighed him down!!!
I love people breaking down this fight like it wasn’t scripted or something
If the writers had written the script with Rocky winning after the first knock down, Rocky would have won the first fight.
This is probably the most closest we can get to ali and marcianos fight styles in one ring
Can someone explain how Rocky lost after knocking down Apollo creed
He wasn't ready for rockys strength. Everyone knows he has heart but people underestimate how powerful he could punch.
The best part of the clip, for me at least, is at 2:30.
I agree
The way the bartender jumps from joy and doesn't care about his dirty glasses or anything just pure excitement.
I would jump like that when I'm excited as well!!
This scene cracks me up because Apollo Creed is so cocky and then just lies on the stage after suddenly getting knocked down.
Well, having a sense of humility will often get you into trouble LESS than the cocky ones.😉🤜🏼🤛🏼
One of the truly great scenes in movie history.
Creed swag swag in this fight is just unbelievably nice
Italian stallone
Apollo Creed made the classical mistake - underestimating your opponent. He didn't even study his opponent at all and just assumed there was nothing to prepare against there. His trainer, Duke, however realized early on that Rocky is a southpaw and also shows talent when he is training in his unconventional way. Therefore Apollo is taken by complete surprise. Late in the bout Duke realizes that Creed's real strength, his technique and speed, is all gone and it's solely a question of will - something Rocky clearly has shown an incredible amount of. Creed was literally saved by the bell in the last round, a few more seconds and Rocky would have knocked him down and won.

Apollo Creed almost loss cause his hat was too heavy

0:29 When even apollo creed didn't manage to get 50 wins in 50 fights, I don't think Larry Holmes had any right, being so gutted about not accomplishing that!!!!!
