Tommy Robinson is the co-founder and former spokesman and leader of the English Defence League (EDL) "street protest" movement, and also founded the European Defence League. For a short time in 2012 Robinson was joint Party Vice Chairman of the British Freedom Party. He led the EDL from 2009 until 8 October 2013, when he was persuaded to quit the organisation and to discuss alternative ways of tackling extremism with the think tank Quilliam.

I'm an African, a Nigerian specifically, and I've always even before I knew or came across this gent by name Tommy Robinson, and all stood, fought, and advocated for, I couldn't bring myself to the denial of the facts he always presented. Now,I may not be able to personally prove his accounts to be truthful, but due to my own personal experiences and witnesses, he's absolutely on point. I just pray for peace among real humans who are not persuaded religiously to blindly defend what they've been thought to believe, but hopefully be truthful to ourselves for the sake of seeking and achieving peace amongst ourselves

As he was promptly released, and his story matches what was said, I am rather inclined to skeptically believe him.
I am born and raised in Telford. I went to school with some of the convicted groomers. My childhood experiences were very similar to what Tommy is describing here. I knew girls who where groomed and raped and they were called liars. My friends 13 year old cousin was ran over and killed by her 19 year old "boyfriend" because she tried to get away from him and his grooming friends. We had a school assembly about how to be safe around cars while the police and teachers ignored the uncomfortable reality and truth of what really happened. Many of the victims were vulnerable girls from vulnerable homes and easy targets.
Almost 20 years later I work in social services because I wanted to be the change and I'm sad to say absolutely nothing has changed. Those of us that truly care just get burned out by the weak minded who would rather call us liars and ignore the truth than risk their pay check.
I used to think it was ignored because people are scared to be labelled racist. Now i realise its more because society is just so broken as whole, people have to turn a blind eye to protect their job so they can pay their bills and keep food on the table instead of doing whats right and fighting to protect those that are vulnerable.
It takes a very strong person to walk against the crowd and stand up for whats right these days.
So many children are still being failed.
You dont have to like Tommy. You dont have to be friends with him or support him. You dont have to be a racist. But you dont have to ignore the rape of children either. Its a choice you are making.

As someone who was formerly quite left wing in my beliefs, Tommy was often a byword for "racist" or "far right". But, the more we head down a road of integration that is failing on it's own terms (let alone anyone else's), and the more I hear Robinson's own words (rather than secondhand misrepresentations of him), the more I realised how I was being deceived about him. You can tell us to ignore people like Robinson. But, outside, the problems of integration - and communities that refuse to integrate - simply become more apparent, more visible, and more dangerous.

I must confess I had heard of the EDL and Tommy in the media and just thought he was a racist and a Nazi. I feel passionately about the issue of all religion, especially Islam spreading across the globe and I totally agree with Tommy and salute his bravery in acting against this.

I was also led to believe by politicians and media that Tommy Robinson was society's bogeyman. As a liberal left-winger, I kept him at arm's length. Having done my research about him (after his imprisonment), I can see that he is someone who has the same concerns about radical Islam as me and most people I know. The way he has been treated is an absolute disgrace, as well as deeply sinister. I'm convinced that if people did their research about Tommy they would see he has been unfairly demonised. I can find no evidence whatsoever that he is racist.

Thank you Oxford Union for putting this on. I had very negative views of Mr Robinson/Lennon for many years, however, I have heard a lot from him recently that has changed my opinion.. Incidentally, I studied in Luton at the University in the early 90s and lived in and around Bury Park.. Even back then the town could sometimes feel like a tinderbox (I'm from Manchester which had enough of its own violent problems in the 90's) however I could only imagine how much worse Luton became in the years after I'd left. Listening to his story made me see the man in a new light, and with a respect for him and his values in standing up for both his community and beliefs.

My mum and dad were threatened whilst walking through a local park in Stoke on Trent by a gang of Muslim lads, shouting at them that they’ll pay when the UK is a Islamic country. My dad dies ten years ago and this happened long before then; my dad would’ve been in his late 60s / early 70s then … they didn’t report it for fear of retaliation. I knew girls who where groomed and raped and they were called liars too. I'm so ashamed, I knew very little of Tommy Robinson, I'm from Australia too so know even less of what's been going on there, but even here whenever the EDL was mentioned on Australian news it was always called a Far Right Fascist group, so whenever I heard Tommy Robinson talked about I assumed he was some sort of thug. He's got to be one of the bravest and most intelligent men around and fighting for everything that is right and just. The police, the media and the government aren't just inept and ignorant as I thought, they are oppressive and racist and clearly in a conspiracy to destroy the British working classes. History will see Tommy Robinson as a hero. The same way that the working class was demonised and oppressed by the elites in the 1800s for fighting for their rights, same thing is happening now.
