Wow! I just finished this video, and I think my head exploded 😁 Johannes provides foundational information that is valuable, practical, and applicable for creating visually interesting landscape artwork. Hands down, this is one of the best videos I've seen, both for the content and for the instructor's ability to convey information. I am so appreciative of your teaching and your teacher's heart. I am an artist network member, yet I have never taken a class with Johannes. As a new pastelist and mixed media artist, I look forward to learning more from you.
Johannes Vloothuis is an excellent instructor. I’ve taken online classes with him for well over 10 years, before he was affiliated with Artists Network, and he’s a fount of information. He’s very generous with his time and knowledge. Unlike other instructors, he tells you why and how.
You are an excellent instructor. I love how you paint light and sky. It has an ethereal effect. Thank you for sharing your knowledge you’ve acquired through out the years Blessing in 2024!
I have taken many art classes. While they have been good, Jo’s classes explain far much more than I ever learned from other classes. He has the patience to put up with stupid questions and his explanations are thorough in regards to technique, color harmony, and composition. I don’t always do landscapes. Nonetheless, I find his instruction transfers and works for me with my watercolors of other subjects. The community he created of art lovers is fun and engaging. I love Saturdays and getting with the other artists that tune in to Jo’s presentations. His presentations are for the artists who love art and enjoy creating pieces of meaning and value. You will never be sorry to sign up for any of his paint alongs.
Thank you so much for sharing! I now have a new skill set to evaluate what went wrong with my paintings. It’s because I over-did the yellow greens or I placed a distraction in the lower foreground. I needed a softer edge next to a larger value shift. I knew I didn’t like it but you gave me the tools to know why it didn’t work! Principles such as deciding the abstract shapes and “melodic” lines FIRST and then filling in the trees or rocks to fit the desired shape is a fundamental skill I can use from here on out from this day forward as you accurately described. Other useful details I will remember are cracks in rocks are directional for a reason, temperature gradients cool to warm, pointers, subdued margins, the list goes on. Your presentation has transformed my vision. I am truly grateful for the knowledge you shared!
This is extraordinary information and riding it -is your wonderful skills. I am in Mumbai and started painting seriously water colours in 2022 after Covid.. I am 69 and loving the colour journey !! Will like to do your class sometime !! Good luck
So glad I found these videos and classes through Artist network. Jo is right about never hearing or seeing this type of analysis and teaching. I have many Northlight books, magazines, have taken workshops and agree with him. I especially appreciate his enthusiasm. I feel like finally I can get somewhere with this “passion” for art. I’m 70, retired and glad to be able to not have to struggle as much. So much to learn, but I have a better outlook on the process because of his generosity.
Thank you, Jo. I learned a lot….I have your book this enhanced some of the key points. Now I’ll go back to Artist’s Network to look at more of your videos. It would seem that many if not all of these principles apply to drawing (with graphite), as I am finding that I like a drawing before I paint a landscape scene.
Best instruction ever. So detailed, so many ways to get where you need to go to do a good painting FASTER... Jo is like a fast track to doing a great painting! Love the classes!!!
I have seen this video this evening and loved it. But, today it is saterday. So I missed you’re lessons today. I going to look on the website. I found this very inspiring while I am teaching many groups since 1986. But this way you do it. Wauw. Loved it. Greetings from the Netherlands
This is fantastic information. Thank you so much. I’ve only been doing watercolor for about six months and I’ve never done anything artistic before in my life. I really enjoy your videos.
I am a student in many of Jo's Paint Alongs, and these principles are explained and utilized in all of them. Thanks, Jo for this review. There is no such thing as too many reviews to remind us all how imperative these principles are for a successful result.
I love how well these principles were articulated. Many people tell you to do this and don't do that but they don't usually give the reasons why, and certainly not as detailed as this. If you know why something is done a certain way, with logical reasons, then you learn better and retain the knowledge better.
I loved this fast-paced, information-packed presentation! I plan to go dissect some of my own pieces, using these principles, to see if I can figure out what’s working and what isn’t. Also it helps me see my photos anew. I’m quite comfortable in photoshop, so now I’m excited to look through my photos again. I love that you reference disney pixar.
To be fair, I wish I'd found this a year ago. I mean this in the nicest possible way, but I have no need of the fancy lingo... But the VALUE of your information and clear teaching strategy is unparalleled. I'm broke and can't afford stuff to match my skill level and broaden it. Many thanks to everyone who had a hand in this video. I approve, carry on.
That's not "fancy lingo", it's precision. That "lingo" is necessary so that everyone can understand by simply looking up terms, rather than depending on idiomatic and imprecise expressions that are only clear to people speaking the exact same dialect in the exact same culture as the presenter.
@@sehrgut42 well your opinion is noted. I guess you are one of the "fancy lingo" folks then? The fact that this is a comment for the creator of this content, and not you, had eluded you I'm afraid. Feel free to post your own comments about your thoughts elsewhere. Or, sit here and make noise. No skin off my back. Take care now.
I have enjoyed yor lessons so much. Learning so much. I. 76 years old and been painting since I was a child.you have brought out things I have not heard before. Thankyou!
@@barbarabrown5701 this brings a smile to my face! 76?! You're still young yet! I was more into pencil drawing since I was a boy. I've only gotten into painting in the last 10 years, and I've barely picked up a pencil since. Airbrushing space is my favorite, then it'd be landscapes second. Keep painting my friend, it's a gift!
Enjoyed your principles for landscapes very much. Easy to understand and see. A lot to remember so I wrote them all down. As a beginning (2 year) watercolor painter I am happy to have these principles to remember. Thank you!
Thank you Johanne. Your instruction is easy to follow, especially due to your visuals. Best RUclips class that I’ve viewed on landscape techniques. Looking forward to taking your class on the Artist Network.
Wow! I have been floundering in my effort to break the tendency to faithfully render the scene in the photo. You have verbalized methods and reasoning that I can try to develop. Thanks. The breakdown of photo characteristics is very useful to those of us that haven’t been proficient in photography.
Your correct, have not hear most of this before, and I have a list of RUclips Artist. Each artist seems to have their particular concept they teach well. I never expect to have a single teacher that does more then one or two such things I need to know. I am retired and my profession was an assembler of technology. And would often get handed projects with an assortment of technologies that one or two were new to me. So I had to learn enough to properly be capable of balancing the final product, not over burden any one technology. It on average took 6 months of 40 hrs a week to learn what is not said from but important to integrate. Often not important for the technology expert. So to study with one person it will take at least this long to pick up those shown but not verbalized concepts of the art, however; jumping around likely will take as long to find individuals that verbalize the multiple points.
Fantastic. Thank you for sharing your ideas and much more. From Europe, Scandinavia, Denmark. So down to earth teaching and up in the Sky. Love it. Will suddenly see more videos.
I enjoyed this, except for the incorrect ways you described photography. I recommend you consult with a professional photographer before you use those analogies in another class. The two main ones are: 1. "Everything in a photograph is in focus." Not true, and misleading as to why photographic focus doesn't match visual attention. Learn about depth of field. 2. "Photographs are too dark." Also not correct, and has nothing to do with aperture as you state. Photographs have limited DYNAMIC RANGE, which is what causes the effect you notice. Overall, your class was useful in terms of painting composition, but you sounded similar to a photographer who doesn't understand painting attempting to claim painting isn't a good a medium as photography.

I hate to be redundant, but this was mind-blowing🤯 I have had trouble with both plein air and photographs and now I see why. Thank you!

I am a longtime student of Johannes’s paint alongs. He is a terrific teacher! The Paint Alongs are a real value and fun.
Excellent information on a critical element of art by a proven master painter and teacher!
Great instructor. The paint alongs are terrific
Thank you .. this is so awesome !
Very precious information thanks ❤

Hi from North Carolina
Is this for adobe illustrative or using real paint on canvas?
Great classes. Don't thank the classes are to advanced for you they are designed to learn from the bottom up and improve your painting technique.
so impressionist dots are pixilating?
that's why Tavis leave glovers edge flikr concept would make some sense at least!!
I dont agree with yr relaxed view.. Relaxed means not realistic looking..some may prefer more realistic paintings
