    Join this free live workshop that is hosted by Artists Network and presented by the internationally-known professional artist, Johannes Vloothuis. In this workshop, you will learn about the anatomy of cloudy skies. Johannes will demonstrate the principles of painting cloudy skies in both oils and watercolor. (Two separate paintings)

    Watercolor segment
    The pan pastels where oh wow!
    The Drexel sanding was jaw drop and eyes popped out.
    I have seems some one who had been working on an oil. Painting for 3 years take sand paper to a beautiful oil painting. He was in Europe studying the techniques of the great masters. This sanding in layers gave the painting an inner glow that could not be achieved any other way. It was interesting and quite beautiful. However years of developing layers on the same imagine was beyond me.

    Yours are the best of all videos on RUclips. I have learnt so much. Thankyou!
    One question - if I join Artist’s Network is your 5 hour crash course on landscape composition there? It’s May 2024 now so obviously I’ve missed it.

    Donna from CT. I have a hard time believing that somebody looking at this for the first time will skip over that beautiful, richly colored field and forest to go begin at the upper left white area... Maybe it's just me being more interested in land.

      I wrote this after you said to begin putting the white sky in the top left because we read from there. This turned out to be a wonderful painting!

      I believe it's watercolor but acrylic can be used too, I guess just dilute it.

    Beautiful!Why lamp black and not Ivory black which is cooler?

    • @Milania717
      @Milania717 5 месяцев назад

      Don’t use black- better to mix - Ultramarine with burnt umber- and or blue with burnt umber- black gets into the other colors especially painting with oils - and not cleaning the brush- it also gives a dull- garish- and muddy appearance to the overall colors-

    What's confusing to me is, people always talk about negative painting to create clouds. But it's really not negative painting because you've already painted in the white or white yellow clouds. And you're just painting the blue around the white shapes. The only way it would be negative painting is if the whole sky were painted white initially, or if you hadn't painted any white at all. And of course that's not the case.

    Gonna be cloudy to stormy from now on. If yer gonna paint, there'll be lots of clouds to look at. Not much real nice weather or good times to look at coming up. Stay sunny !

    Jack, I guess you were expecting a high degree of realism rather than a lyrical version of a landscape.Very few top artists render a print out of nature scenes. We resort to "Representational" landscape painting. We interpret and simplify a scene down to its essentials. That leaves room for viewers to add their imagination.

    43:31 final results aren’t bad- however- beginners could never achieve this!! He’s forgetting that this is second nature to him- and he’s been painting for 20yrs!!!!
    A beginner can never achieve this in the way that he approached the process as seen here!!!’ Never-
    Especially if one is using acrylic paints- many don’t understand that using acrylic paints as a beginner-- will hinder the learning process--
    The goal of beginners should be- your practicing to achieve your own signature brushstrokes-- it’s like your learning to write- but using a brush and a medium (oil paint) -- once one has developed their own signature brushstrokes- and know the many ways to manipulate brushes- and various brushes - as many different brushes make different marks- then one can go onto painting - also- how one sees color and their ability to mix colors-
    It is the signature brushstrokes and the ability to see and mix colors that makes that piece stand out-
    You’ll have a class of 20 people- all using same sketch- same palette of hues- same brushes and surface- however in the end- all will appear different and there’s always that ONE that will stand out from the rest!!
    Acrylics are not an easy medium!! Like watercolor is a Masters medium!!! Acrylic will take years to master- especially if one wants to achieve a decent looking close to realistic landscape-
    There’s such a misconception using oils- oils can be used without using a medium- and there’s non toxic mediums available!!! No need to use anything else-
    Watch paint with Kevin- although he uses the paper towels- I don’t agree with this- there’s no need for it- you can paint without using mediums- and Kevin sells the non toxic painting medium!!! And does not use it- the gel that he uses is actually better for plein air- and needs to be mixed from gel State to liquid before using-
    The company makes a liquid non toxic form as well- which is an alkyld- and again non toxic- good when needed a like if your using the Winton - Windsor and Newton paints- and so on-
    Acrylic paints are easy of your painting hobby style painting like the art Sherpa- lol
    Not for landscape and wanting to learn to be a painter!!

    The sky and the land look like 2 different paintings have been joined ‘Frankenstein-wise’. Sorry! Your tips on composition in another video were wonderful, thanks, but this ….. ??

    • @Milania717
      @Milania717 5 месяцев назад

      @sueclavi9762 his dialogue makes it difficult for nothing- and there’s no way a beginner can follow this approach-- he forgets it’s second nature to him and he’s been painting for over 20yrs-
      And I see your point- the landscape appears realistic and the sky appears sloppy- lol
      He actually has obtained all of his context regarding teaching from Carlson on landscape book- and he words it differently--
      He says that no one has ever referred to the lines- but Carlson has- Master artists knew and applied it-
      He also claims he doesn’t use any medium while painting with oils- however- he cleans - and dips brush into the cleaning fluid- which helps the paint move- it’s in the brush- Bob Ross used to do this but never let viewers know and understand this- he’s doing the same -
